Fun Book - great gift
By E. Perlin
Easy to read - lots of fun with or without the CD. I have given as a gift several times after I found how much my daughter (was 3 when purchased, is now 4) loves it. The book has illustrations that replace some of the words which make it nice for my young "reader" to interject. Good purchase - 4 short stories.

The Vertical Farm: Feeding the World in the 21st Century, by Dickson Despommier

"The vertical farm is a world-changing innovation whose time has come. Dickson Despommier's visionary book provides a blueprint for securing the world's food supply and at the same time solving one of the gravest environmental crises facing us today."--Sting

Imagine a world where every town has their own local food source, grown in the safest way possible, where no drop of water or particle of light is wasted, and where a simple elevator ride can transport you to nature's grocery store - imagine the world of the vertical farm.

When Columbia professor Dickson Despommier set out to solve America's food, water, and energy crises, he didn't just think big - he thought up. Despommier's stroke of genius, the vertical farm, has excited scientists, architects, and politicians around the globe. Now, in this groundbreaking book, Despommier explains how the vertical farm will have an incredible impact on changing the face of this planet for future generations.

Despommier takes readers on an incredible journey inside the vertical farm, buildings filled with fruits and vegetables that will provide local food sources for entire cities.

Vertical farms will allow us to:
- Grow food 24 hours a day, 365 days a year
- Protect crops from unpredictable and harmful weather
- Re-use water collected from the indoor environment
- Provide jobs for residents
- Eliminate use of pesticides, fertilizers, or herbicides
- Drastically reduce dependence on fossil fuels
- Prevent crop loss due to shipping or storage
- Stop agricultural runoff

Vertical farms can be built in abandoned buildings and on deserted lots, transforming our cities into urban landscapes which will provide fresh food grown and harvested just around the corner. Possibly the most important aspect of vertical farms is that they can built by nations with little or no arable land, transforming nations which are currently unable to farm into top food producers. In the tradition of the bestselling The World Without Us, The Vertical Farm is a completely original landmark work destined to become an instant classic

When Columbia professor Dickson Despommier set out to solve America's food, water, and energy crises, he didn't just think big - he thought up. Despommier's stroke of genius, The Vertical Farm, has excited scientists, architects, and politicians around the globe. These farms, grown inside skyscrapers, would provide solutions to many of the serious problems we currently face, including: allowing year-round crop production; providing food to areas currently lacking arable land; immunity to weather-related crop failure; re-use of water collected by de-humidification of the indoor environment; new employment opportunities; no use of pesticides, fertilizers, or herbicides; drastically reduced dependence on fossil fuels; no crop loss due to shipping or storage; no agricultural runoff; and, many more. Vertical farming can be located on abandoned city properties, creating new urban revenue streams. They will employ lots of skilled and unskilled labor. They can be run on wind, solar, tidal, and geothermal energy. They can be used to grow plants for pharmaceutical purposes or for converting gray water back into drinking water. In the tradition of the bestselling The World Without Us, this is a totally original landmark work destined to become a classic. With stunning illustrations and clear and entertaining writing, this book will appeal to anyone concerned about America's future.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Despommier, an award-winning professor of microbiology and public and environmental health sciences, adds his voice to those calling for agricultural reform. It’s time to confront agrochemical pollution, he declares, and to convert waste into energy, conserve water, stop cutting down forests for fields, and make cities the equivalent of healthy ecosystems. It’s time, Despommier believes after more than a decade of study and brainstorming, for vertical farming. Farms that “would raise food without soil in specially constructed buildings”: energy- and water-efficient high-rise greenhouses using hydroponic and aeroponic growing techniques. The challenges involved are many, Despommier cheerfully concedes, but the advantages he cites are profound. In making his case, Despommier offers a fresh look at the history of farming, a staggering overview of the health and environmental problems associated with industrial agriculture, and a sobering report on current food and water shortages soon to be exacerbated by rapid climate change and exponential population growth. A visionary known the world over, Despommier believes that the “vertical farm is the keystone enterprise for establishing an urban-based ecosystem” and for “restoring balance between our lives and the rest of nature.” A provocative introduction to a pragmatic approach to growing safe, nutritious, local food. --Donna Seaman

A Complete Waste of Your Money! Do not buy!
By Scott Keating
"Pure drivel" is how I would describe this book. Absolutely no content. I heard about this book when its author was interviewed on NPR radio. I was intrigued by the idea of vertical farming, and thought the book would tell me something about it. The book completely failed me.

The first 131 pages of the book (out of a total of 268 pages) do not discuss the vertical farm AT ALL! Instead, the first 131 pages consist of a directionless wander through the history of the planet and of mankind, including discussion of ecosystems, "technospheres" (whatever they are!), the dustbowl of the 1930s, the spread of infectious agents, the Bible and the Reverand Billy Graham, John Steinbeck and "The Grapes of Wrath", the US Civil War, the oil industry, dynamite, the Atomic Bomb, injustice and inequality, climate change, Charles Darwin and the Galapagos Islands, genetically-modified organisms (GMOs), and HIV/AIDS. Most of these subject have little, if anything to do with vertical farming.

I got excited when I reached the 2nd half of the book and Chapter 5 entitled "The Vertical Farm: Advantages." Finally, I thought, a discussion of the vertical farm. Alas, no such luck. Very little of the second half of the book addresses vertical farming. What discussion there is about vertical farming addresses either technologies most of us know about -- such as hydroponic growing and photovoltaic cells -- or about ideas that are so far-fetched they are hardly worth discussing. The words "could", "would" and "should" are a prevalent as rats in a sewer.

If you want to get the entire content of the book, refer to pages 145-146 where a list of eleven advantages of vertical farming are given (double-spaced, I presume, to take up more space than they deserve). That's all the real content of the book. Eleven bullet points.

(By the way, if you are looking for a list of disadvantages of vertical farming, don't bother. The author wants us to believe that vertical farming will solve all of mankind's problems.)

I think vertical farming is a wonderful idea with lots of potential. The problem with this book is that it does not advance the idea of vertical farming; more likely it will hinder its development by causing sensible, reasonable people to conclude that advocates of vertical farming hallucinate way too much.

Spend Your Time (and Money) Elsewhere!
By Walter Mountford
I regularly read business books of various genres and was extremely disappointed in "The Vertical Farm". After a hundred pages that labor over the history of world agriculture and endless environmental rants, Dr. Dickson Despommier doesn't offer the reader even a shred of economic or cost and return data to substantiate the vertical farm. Nothing. After 256 pages, he simply closes his book by literally asking the reader to "suspend your own sense of reality and imagine along with me" of what could be. Holy smokes, sounds like Dr. Despommier has had some particularly fine success with hydroponic growing!

However, let's just do a back-of-the-envelope feasibility. The only economics presented by Dr. Despommier is the assertion that hydroponic farming can produce 10 to 20 times the crop output per acre than that of a traditionally maintained farm field. Let's run with that and assume an acre of Iowa farmland costs $10,000 or around $.25 per square foot. Assuming a median of 15 times the efficiency of the traditional farm, the hydroponic equivalent cost would be $3.75 per square foot, which will be our baseline comparison to solely the construction cost of the vertical farm. As you read through the book, no expense is spared in the vertical farm concept. It has at least the cost of a high rise office building shell (say, $75 per SF) plus essentially a hermetically sealed, clean room environment, tons of growing equipment, photovoltaic panels, and artificial illumination (easily an additional $225 per SF). Let's add land cost, design cost, financing costs, and other fees and the vertical farm is around $375 per SF compared to the Iowa farm equivalent of $3.75 or around 100 times more expensive before a seed has been planted! Assuming any financing entity would want an annual 15% return on total cost for the risk associated with this specialized facility and one adds a twenty-five year amortization of costs, the resulting annualized capital cost for the vertical farm is $71.25 vs. $.375 per SF for the Iowa farm land (a 10% return on land cost) or an annual capital cost that is 190 times more expensive.

But that is only the construction cost. Remember, we have to pay for the vertical farm's operating costs, which include labor, powering artificial lighting, operating the seed nursery, vertical transportation, and real estate, among others. There is no machinery for the vertical farm harvest. Everything is hand picked and maintained. Let's just assert that, in addition to the upfront capital costs and a return on those costs, it is 20 times more costly to actually grow and harvest crops from a vertical farm.

So, the annual capital costs and operating costs are 190 times and 20 times more expensive, respectively. Let's just theorized that the vertical farm cost premium is somewhere in between the two premiums, say, 40 times as more expensive to deliver bananas to your grocery store. As a result, the bananas that now cost you $.50 per pound will cost you $20 per pound! (Again, I would love to have more data, and after reading 268 pages of rants, you would think that I should, but none is presented).

In summary, "The Vertical Farm" does not meet the feasibility sniff test. Dr. Despommier is clearly a dreamer, as all futurists should be. However, let's offer up some ideas for solving our many (and well articulated by Dr. Despommier) environmental problems that have a modicum of a chance for seeing the light of day.

But how do you change the lightbulbs?
By ringo
News stories, I was taught in school, always include "who, what, when, where, why". And science stories, the old joke went, always include "who, what, when, where, wow". For green tech, authors tend to trade the "why" for a "woe". And then, of course, there's the "woo".

The book starts with the woe:

The history of agriculture (starting with the Neanderthals), the technological fall from grace, and then heart wrenching descriptions of the coming agricultural apocalypse. Is it correct? I don't know. But I'm pretty sure that, despite the provocative mental picture it evokes, restaurants in New York don't necessarily put out food waste in green plastic garbage bags (there are multiple composting programs), and the author's claim that "the Spanish troops received the lasting 'gift' of syphilis ... undoubtedly acquired from raping and pillaging sorties, which they then introduced into Europe" is hyperbole (unless he meant that they introduced raping and pillaging sorties to Europe? I'm pretty sure Europe had those already). But in this book's universe, there are wastrel societies, and steward societies, and nary the twain shall meet. (Except for those Conquistadors).

The over simplification of history leads into an oversimplification of science. " come under attack because of a perception on the part of the public that GMOs are potentially harmful and should not be allowed. In fact, they have been modified to resist droughts, attack from a variety of plant pathogens, and increased amounts of herbicides." (page 130) (Try googling "roundup-ready" for why this isn't such a hot idea).

Then comes the woo:

The author says we can solve all this, the loss of wild land to farming, the need for massive amounts of fertilizer and pesticides, the poisoning of groundwater with agricultural runoff. With indoor farming! In a gigantic building! (Because massive agro-businesses have been so benevolent in the past).

To address the weed and pest problem, the buildings can be biologically isolated, using technology already in place in hospitals (hospital-bred infections are some of the most virulent, and hard to get rid of).

To feed and water the plants, we can use hydroponics, on which the author has already done some research. "The liquid portion of the operation is pumped slowly through a specially constructed pipe, usually made of a plastic such as polyvinyl chloride (or PVC)" (page 167). (Are you nuts?)

To get sunlight to the plants? We can use mirrors and lenses, or even provide light with super-efficient OLEDs, run, perhaps, by photovoltaics. (Maybe we could devote one floor of the building to the photovoltaics, and use them to run the lights on that floor, as well as on all the others?).

And so on.

From a literary perspective, this book is readable. The flow is coherent at the macro-level (chapters and sections), though at the deeper levels the text often repeats, as if they were new, ideas that were already presented. The utter lack of citations, from someone who claims to be an academic, is more troubling, but fits with the overall sense that many of the facts stated are completely off-the-cuff. In addition, the author oversimplifies, and writes with affect in mind, not logic. What we get is the literary equivalent of an impressive facade and lobby, without any thought to the traffic circulation and HVAC.

When I studied writing in school, I was taught about "who, what, when, where, and why". But when I studied architecture, the most cringe-worthy critique wasn't about form, or function, or even appropriateness-for-landscape. The cutting-est thing your instructor could say about your design was, simply, "how do you change the lightbulbs?". This book has some cool ideas. But it also has a HUGE pile of lightbulbs.

Serials Management in Academic Libraries: A Guide to Issues and Practices (Greenwood Library Management Collection), by Jean W. Farrington

In the decade ahead, libraries will have to do more with less. Fewer journal titles owned by each institution, less detailed cataloging, and fewer staff will become realities as libraries are forced to cope with budget restrictions. Serials management, in particular, will require a greater degree of adaptability and flexibility. This professional reference overviews the most significant emerging issues concerning serials management in academic libraries and provides practical advice to aid librarians in responding to a changing environment. Among the issues discussed are the debate of access versus ownership, the electronic dissemination of text and document delivery, standards for electronic data transfer, and approaches to cataloging. The volume offers practical solutions to the problems facing librarians, and it stresses the increasing role of automation in effective serials management.

This professional reference is a guide to the many evolving issues in serials management, as well as a source of practical information designed to assist academic librarians in successfully managing their serials in a rapidly changing environment. Some of the key issues discussed include access versus ownership, the electronic dissemination of texts, document delivery systems, standards for the electronic transfer of data, and the debate over the outsourcing of cataloging. Fortunately, many of the issues concerning serials management readily lend themselves to automation. Thus, this volume gives considerable attention to automation as a solution to many of the problems confronting librarians. Each chapter includes references to current literature, and the volume concludes with a selected bibliography of works for further reading.

Primo Levi: A Life, by Ian Thomson

Primo Levi wrote books that have been called "the essential works of humankind," including Survival in Auschwitz and The Periodic Table. Yet he lived an unremarkable existence, remaining to his death in the house in which he'd been born; managing a paint and varnish factory for thirty years; and tending his invalid mother to the end. Now, in a matchless account, Ian Thomson unravels the strands of an influential life.

From Publishers Weekly
Thomson's biography of Primo Levi comes a little over a year after Carole Angier's Levi biography, The Double Bond. The merits of the two are sharply distinct from each other. Where Angier considered broader questions of culture and identity, Thomson is brisk and novelistic. Thomson had extensive, exclusive access to Levi papers and family members, where Angier had almost none. For that reason alone, any Leviphile will derive considerable pleasure from Thomson's account. The fast-paced narrative sometimes results in frustratingly concise characterizations ("Chemistry was to be a powerful magnet for the inadequate teenager looking for a focus to his life"), but that may well be the price for a book that follows Levi's comings and goings so closely. Thomson, who has translated the novels of Sicilian crime writer Leonardo Sciascia into English and wrote Bonjour Blanc, is particularly attentive to the often glossed-over later years of the author's life, tracing the twin courses of his publishing career and his deepening struggle with depression. Since Levi's tragic suicide in 1987, the search for the true man behind the mythic Holocaust survivor has only intensified; Levi biographers always find they must compete not only with each other but with their subject, whose immortal memoirs will inevitably have the final say. In the end, Thomson's contribution may concentrate more on the trees than the forest, but its smoothly assembled accumulation of details renders an invaluable service to the Levi legacy.

From Booklist
Levi's books are landmark accounts of the Holocaust experience and the enduring questions of guilt and survival. But this is very much the biography of an ordinary man with all his flaws, a secular assimilated Jew who bungled his role in the Resistance and up to the time of his own deportation in 1943 refused to believe the accounts of Nazi atrocity. Drawing on hundreds of interviews with friends, family, and other witnesses, and on one long interview with Levi himself shortly before his suicide in 1987, Thomson writes with authority about his subject's thoughts, feelings, and memories. The sources are fully documented, but the notes never intrude on the accessible narrative. Unlike Carole Angier in The Double Bond (2002), Thomson doesn't spend much time analyzing Levi's private life, but many readers will want more about Levi's books and less detail about what he did month by month. "Survivors can be troublesome and tedious," Levi said, and it is that voice without a hint of sanctimony that bears witness in this authoritative biography. Hazel Rochman

Review

“Beautiful in its arrangement and narration, measured and honest without ever being remotely dull. Thank goodness for Ian Thomson... the true and perfect biographer of Primo Levi.” ―Daily Mail (UK)

“A modest but imposing work.” ―The New York Times Book Review

“Thomson has surely written one of the best literary biographies of the year . . . Shrewdly, he has provided what any lover of Levi needs close by: not a critical interpretation or reinterpretation, but a reader's companion . . . Thomson writes with an exemplary mastery of detail and rare narrative verve . . . Superb.” ―The Observer

“Intelligent, low-key, well-written, and mercifully innocent of big claims. It brilliantly captures what is remarkable about its subject: the life and emotional economy of a man who was 'ordinary'...An important biography.” ―London Review of Books

“Ian Thomson has done a prodigious amount of research and presents a considerable amount of fresh biographical material . . . Highly persuasive.” ―The New York Review of Books

An exquisitely detailed look at a fascinating man
By A Customer
A highly enjoyable book. Thomson paints an extremely detailed picture but does not attempt to create a mythic figure out of Levi. He is presented in 3 dimensions with all his strengths and weaknesses. Extremely rich look at the assimilated Jewish community of Turin suddenly being cast as the enemy of the Fascist state. Highly recommended.

Fulsome research of This Man's motivations and his times
By Rodney J. Moss
Thomson's work is a wonderful read, well researched with telling detail and written in prose suitable to its subject. You can feel the struggle Primo endures to hack through the Auschwitz experience, his work as a chemist, his fathering, husbanding, literary aspirations and living in cramped circumstances within his mother's home. Highly recommended to the devotee of Levi's fascinating journey and written achievements. The research around the period, particularly the shakers and movers in northern Italian political and cultural life is enthralling with ample evidence from a host of surviving acquaintances. Levi's depressive tendencies are charted. His rise from obscurity to literary fame. His days in the chemical factory..it's all there, weighing in and shaping the artist that he was. Without overstating the issue, Thomson lays out the supreme irony of Levi's career with the Turin chemical industrial firm, its hazards, and his survival route by working with the industrialized death camp at Auschwitz.

By carolinaislandgirl
It is difficult to give Primo Levi's biography a low rating, the man deserved a biography that shone with the careful use of language his own narrative work exemplified. This book is as tiresome as listening to some neighborhood gossip who cannot leave one speck of information undivulged. So our wonderful Primo Levi has been overtaken by a loquacious storyteller who manages to make the remarkable life of Levi Primo sink into utterly mundane prose and unimportant detail. So sad that the author could not ferret out the important and leave all the rest behind. Very disappointing.

Most people take eating for granted - but for some, eating can be downright dangerous. Thirty thousand Americans are hospitalized each year due to an allergic food reaction and peanut allergies in American children doubled from 1997 to 2002. Between two and ten percent of children are affected by food allergies worldwide and adverse food reactions increased hospital admissions by five hundred percent in the United Kingdom during the past two decades. Asthma cases, a reliable indicator of food allergy susceptibility, increased one hundred percent during the last thirty years. While most people assume they have a food allergy, only a very small percentage of cases are a true food allergy. For reasons still unknown, the human immune system reacts abnormally to certain foods. However, medical disorders, increased globalization of the food supply, and an upsurge of processed and convenience foods that contain food additives may also cause adverse food reactions as well. Accurate diagnosis can be extremely tricky and many sufferers never learn what causes their symptoms.

Why are adverse food reactions on the rise? How can an accurate diagnosis be made? Is it even possible to enjoy foods and stay safe and healthy? These are just some of the questions this book will answer while helping the reader to learn all they can about why adverse food reactions happen, distinguish between a true food allergy and a food hypersensitivity, and outline strategies to successfully manage and live with them.

From School Library Journal
Grade 2-6–Christmas John, 12, lives in a pine-board cabin with Granny Judith, who was enslaved when strangers lured her to their ship with a piece of red flannel. Now on a plantation in Kentucky, Granny Judith and Christmas John help others escape across the river to the free state of Ohio by taking advantage of John's youth–he's young enough to avoid notice, and old enough to row a boat across and back. Granny Judith stitches a quilt, incorporating the colors the escapees wear. What color is freedom tonight? As the quilt approaches completion and the risks grow, the time comes for their own escape. Based on several different narratives from the Federal Writers' Project Slave Narrative Collection, Raven's moving story is full of particulars that lend it authenticity. Lewis's realistic watercolors use texture and shadow to an impressionistic effect, communicating the utter darkness in which Christmas John works, and the emotion contained in a single color. An author's note shows how Raven pieced together her story like Granny Judith's quilt, lending a context that makes this a rich story for adults and children to share.–Nina Lindsay, Oakland Public Library, CA

From Booklist
*Starred Review* The team who created Circle Unbroken (2004) once again brings African American history close. Drawing on accounts in the Slave Narrative Collection, compiled during the 1930s as part of the Federal Writers' Project, Raven presents her story from the viewpoint of Christmas John, 12, born on Christmas morning and raised on a Kentucky plantation by Granny Judith, who was captured as a child in Africa. One night Granny Judith asks him to row a young slave across the river to freedom in Ohio. Christmas John is scared, but he helps the slave and many others escape. Finally, it becomes too dangerous for him to stay on the plantation. Granny Judith wants him to leave, but how can he leave her behind? The older mentor is as tough as the young boy, and Lewis' beautiful, unframed double-page spreads depict the bond between them, including their heartbreaking farewell embrace. The close-ups filled with the richly colored details of Granny Judith's dyed quilts are in stark contrast to the pictures of the night sky and black water, and the shadows of the runaways in the woods. Words and pictures work perfectly together, making sound from silence and light from darkness. Hazel Rochman

Gorgeous art, lyrical story
By Anne B. Levy
Christmas John is 12 when he begins rowing slaves across the Ohio River from Kentucky to freedom. His Granny Judith has one request--what color did the passenger wear? Whatever color he tells her, she sews into a dazzling quilt. And it's all the more poignant after she relates how she was lured onto a slave ship in Africa with patches of bright, red cloth.

But red will also be a lucky hue. When there's only two more spaces left on the quilt, she sews John a crimson shirt. But the dogs are on his scent, and the owners are out with guns ... and ... and ... you have to read the rest yourself.

The illustrator goes heavy on realism, the better to layer all the details, the symbols, the textures and shades and shadows of slavery. Lewis makes sure we won't miss a line on Granny Judith's careworn face or the creeping gloom of the predawn river.

But the real treat is Raven's suspenseful, atmospheric text, told in first person from Christmas John's perspective. The tone is reverant, even hushed, and heavy with imagery and layered meaning:

"Then Granny Judith spoke so low even the dark couldn't hear her. 'But now, Christmas John, we got a chance to learn the color of freedom!'"

Though the story's fictional, the author describes in a lengthy end note how she delved into the Slave Narrative Collection, compiled by the government during the Great Depression, for inspiration. The individuals are based on two real people who likely never met, but whose histories have been stitched together for the sake of one seamless narrative.

Night Boat to Freedom is a wonderful story about the Underground Railroad, as told from the point of view of two "ordinary" people who made it possible.

Beyond that, it is a story about dignity and courage, and a devotion to the ideal of freedom.

My eight year old son loved the book, and it served as a starting point for us to examine the issues of slavery, freedom, segregation, and integration.

A great read with illustrations that inspire, primary schools would do well to include it on their reading lists.

Night Boat to Freedom
By Miss M's Fourth Graders
This book was written by Margot Theis Raven and is called Night Boat to Freedom. There was once a little boy named Christmas John. He was born on Christmas that's why his name is Christmas John. He has a Granny and her name is Judith. She raised him since he was small and they're both in slavery. Granny Judith was telling Christmas John a story about when she was younger. A stranger came to her village and put red cloth in front of her it was so beautiful she grabbed for it. The stranger tricked her across the river on a boat with bigger pieces. So now red is the color of slavery for Granny Judith. Granny Judith and Christmas John want to learn the colors of freedom. There's a man with a station across the river for escaped slaves. Granny Judith wants Christmas John to take Molly, Cook's daughter, to him. Christmas John is only 12 years old. He thought that he should feel as strong as a boy but he felt as weak as a baby. Granny Judith wanted to know what color Molly wore to freedom. When Christmas John told Granny Judith blue she smiled. If slaves wanted to get across the river they would have to know a password from the bible `Menare." Granny Judith had a dream that they had to leave to. When they finally got across the river Christmas John asked Granny Judith, "What color is freedom tonight." Granny Judith responded, "All the colors are freedom."

Christmas John is brave, helpful and selfless. For example: He took a lot of people over the river to freedom and it was dangerous. He could have been seriously punished. He had so many fears but he had to face his fears. I bet he felt good. He could've died but he wanted to help his people across the river and to freedom and I bet they were shocked that a 12 year old boy would do that. At the end he was suppose to escape but he came back for Granny Judith that shows that he's selfless.

I really like the way it ends, because I would have done the same thing. It shows how to care about your loved ones and how to be self less.

The Heights of Courage: A Tank Leader's War on the Golan, by Avigdor Kahalani

In October 1973, the State of Israel was invaded by Egyptian and Syrian forces. Despite early losses, Israel managed to outfight its opponents. The brief and bloody Yom Kippur War stands as a unique chapter in modern military history. Fought primarily by tank units, the war became a story not only of battle strategy and tactics, but also one of human discipline, endurance and sacrifice.

While many historians have chronicled the events of the Yom Kippur War, few have been seasoned by actual combat. Avigdor Kahalani, commander of a tank battalion on the Golan Heights during the Yom Kippur War, describes this experience in The Heights of Courage. Beginning with a description of the initial Syrian offensive, he recounts the personal endeavors of his men, their fears and their ambitions, as well as their emotional and physical hardships. His stark account traces the efforts of the Israel Armored Corps as they struggle to overcome extreme difficulties and setbacks. The author describes their ultimate penetration into enemy territory and their approach to within forty kilometers of Damascus.

Review
"A gripping tale of battlefield action on the Golan Heights during the early days of the 1973 Arab-Israeli war, told by an Israeli tank battalion commander. The book originally appeared in Israel and was well received. It is an essential contribution to the study of military leadership, the combat situation, and the military history of the 1973 conflict. The author describes in great detail the containment action by Israeli armor, which led to offensive action against Syrian forces. The description is augmented by daily accounts that include conversations, orders, etc., which help to place the reader in the thick of things. More than a simple war story, this is recommended for a wide audience."-Library Journal
