Freedom of Information and the Right to Know: The Origins and Applications of the Freedom of Information Act, by Herbert N. Foerstel

This examination of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) traces the American origins of the belief that the citizens of a democracy have a natural right to know about the workings of their government. The issue began in the colonies and came to a head in the 1950s when escalating government secrecy led the press to demand open government. Declaring that the public business is the public's business, a series of crusading newspaper editors aroused public support for the Freedom of Information Act which was passed in 1966.

The book features in-depth interviews with the architects of the FOIA, the FOIA staff in the major federal agencies, and the most prominent FOIA users throughout the country. The concluding chapter examines current impediments to the full realization of the people's right to know.

Defying Hitler: A Memoir, by Sebastian Haffner

Written in 1939 and unpublished until 2000, Sebastian Haffner's memoir of the rise of Nazism in Germany offers a unique portrait of the lives of ordinary German citizens between the wars. Covering 1907 to 1933, his eyewitness account provides a portrait of a country in constant flux: from the rise of the First Corps, the right-wing voluntary military force set up in 1918 to suppress Communism and precursor to the Nazi storm troopers, to the Hitler Youth movement; from the apocalyptic year of 1923 when inflation crippled the country to Hitler's rise to power. This fascinating personal history elucidates how the average German grappled with a rapidly changing society, while chronicling day-to-day changes in attitudes, beliefs, politics, and prejudices.

Amazon.com Review
What was it about Germany that made the rise of Adolf Hitler and his murderous regime possible? That troubling question has occupied many fine minds over the last six decades, few more lucid and thoughtful than the late historian and journalist Sebastian Haffner. In this book, drawn from a manuscript he did not live to complete, Haffner examines the social and cultural conditions that made Germany ill-equipped for democracy and ripe for totalitarianism. Among these, Haffner writes, were a generational war between an apathetic adult population and a youth "familiar with nothing but political clamor, sensation, anarchy, and the dangerous lure of irresponsible numbers games"; a fatal fondness for the winner-and-loser dichotomy of sports and a rage for spectacle and entertainment; a resignation through which ordinary people came to "adapt to living with clenched teeth, in a manner of speaking," rather than stand up in protest. In that climate, Haffner--who left Germany just before World War II broke out--suggests, Nazism was almost an inevitability, against which he, too, tried to withdraw into "a small, secure, private domain," like so many others of his time and place. An important eyewitness account, Haffner's book deepens our understanding of how small missteps can lead to tragic ends, and how nations can be led into chaos. --Gregory McNamee

From Publishers Weekly
A sample historical headline: "1890: Wilhelm II dismisses Bismarck." No one's life was disrupted, writes Haffner. "No family was torn apart, no friendship broken up, no one fled their country." Compare that with "1933: Hindenburg sends for Hitler." In this case, "[a]n earthquake shatters 66 million lives." Thus begins a vivid examination of just how Hitler's ascension affected an ordinary German, a young lawyer with no strong political views, whose career and life were disrupted by the Nazis. Written in 1939, this memoir was not published until 2000, when Pretzel, Haffner's son, brought it out in Germany, where it was a bestseller. Haffner alternates political analysis with accounts of how the rise of the Nazis in the 1920s and early '30s affected his attempts to build a career, keep friendships alive and kindle romantic liaisons. His analysis of the failure of post-WWI German society to create stability is familiar, but Haffner writes with a close familiarity that makes the old new again. And his description of the way the Nazis invaded people's daily lives shines. It becomes clear how many "good Germans" struggled against impossible odds to keep their personal lives politics-free. Unfortunately, Haffner's manuscript ends with 1933 (Pretzel covers the rest of Haffner's life, beginning with immigration to England, in a brief afterword). This intimate self-portrait stands with Victor Klemperer's two-part memoir, I Will Bear Witness, as evidence that the personal can offer insight into the political tragedy of Nazism.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* The author's son, Oliver Pretzel, had his father's book published upon the latter's death in 1999 at the age of 92, and has now thankfully translated it for publication here. This is a gem of a book--with as much intellectual force as, say, The Diary of Anne Frank has emotional force. Haffner, who became a distinguished historian and journalist after fleeing Germany to Britain in 1938, wrote this book in 1939, covering his upbringing from 1907 through 1933. But the book has an almost diary-like feel, so immediate is Haffner's writing, and his elegance of phrase is reminiscent of Sanche de Gramont. To what does Haffner attribute the mass ceding of power to the Nazis? "As a nation," the Germans "are soft, unreliable, and without backbone . . . at the moment of truth, when other nations rise spontaneously to the occasion, the Germans collectively and limply collapsed." Haffner's descriptions of his walks in Berlin in his mid-twenties, ducking into doorways to avoid having to salute a passing swastika, add almost a cinematic allure to the book, as do his verbatim transcriptions of conversations in his debating club, some of whose members had joined the Hitler Youth, and with his passive father as they discussed the author's higher education options in Paris. This is a small masterpiece that should join William Shirer's Berlin Diary as essential reading about that fearsome era. Allen Weakland

For anyone who wants to understand what life was like for an intelligent German citizen from WWl to before ...
By Leisha Jack
For anyone who wants to understand what life was like for an intelligent German citizen from WWl to before WWll, as it slowly over a couple of decades slipped under fascist rule. Hitler did not suddenly appear, the far right paved the way (some unwittingly), removing the peoples rights over time, supposedly to protect them from the communists. Instead of the communists, they coped the extreme right in the form of Hitler and his Nazis.

The author was not a Jew, nor a communist, nor union member, he was a bright young German man studying law. Yet he had to flee his own country, as life had become unbearable and frightening in Berlin under the brutality of Hitler. He found refuge in England, getting out just in time before war broke out. He worked a journalist and returned to Berlin in 1956, he died in his 90's.

In Australia, over the past few years alone, our right wing Government has removed hundreds of our rights and freedoms, supposedly to protect us from Muslim terrorists. As we don't have a Bill of Rights, Australians are more vulnerable to the likes of Hitler than the US is. We are sitting ducks now. This book is a must read.

Unique perspective - written in 1939; flows well
By Karen S.
This is a memoir written in 1939 by a young German man, who was a child during WW I and grows to be a man during the post war period. As an adult, his views "of the day" during Hitler's move into power are unique and elucidating.

It was published by his son after the author's death. The point of view is unique and eye-opening as it was written prior to many of the major battles of WW II. He draws fascinating parallels between the individual German's daily decisions during HItler's rise to power within Germany to the European nations' decision of similar nature - but on a much grander scale.

It is a timeless story and a MUST READ for any election time.

Read this Book before the 2016 Presidential Election!
By John Bean
I've often wondered how the German people could have been so taken in by Adolph Hitler. It's an easy explanation to say it was because of the dire economic straits German was in after The Great War.

This book, however, written from the viewpoint of a young adult living through the actual experience is extraordinary. It supplies reasons why the Germans did not take Hitler seriously, until it was too late.

An extremely interesting, informative work.

A stomach-churning, graphically conveyed murder opens this chilling horror tale by the author of The Burning. Devil worship, inexplicable psychic manifestations, ectoplasms run amok, seances, mediums, ghosts and a serial killer known as the Fog City Satan are some of the elements that add atmosphere to a deftly written and convincing chiller. Six San Francisco families have been gruesomely murdered in crimes that are clearly linked. Called in to replace the detective who's been unsuccessfully investigating the case, officer Larry Foggia follows up all the obvious leads and the usual suspects before a series of bizarre occult phenomena forces him to admit that this case is horribly different. He comes to suspect that the murders are ritual sacrifices designed to call forth demon and fallen angel Beli Ya'al. Assuming Foggia's suspicions are valid, can he stop the slaughter before the seventh and resurrecting sacrifice? Readers who savor the taste of fear should have a field day with this one.

From Kirkus Reviews
Cruel and unusual horror from Masterton (The Burning, 1991; Walkers, 1989, etc.). Be warned: Masterton's newest, about the ritualistic resurrection of the fallen angel Beli Ya'al in San Francisco, opens with what may be the single most sadistic scene in horror history. Retired cop Joe Berry and his happy family are enjoying a quiet evening when a giant in a horned mask bursts into their home, forces Joe and his wife to nail each other with railroad spikes to the floor and then their little kids to the wall, gloatingly slashes and rapes the wife, and sets the family on fire. This sadism isn't new to Masterton, who reveled in charred flesh in The Burning, but the excruciating detail here seemingly acknowledges no bounds and culminates in a soul-draining depiction of the giant mutilating the penis of a renowned psychic. All this nasty stuff is seeded into a fairly routine plot, with the giant--last remaining member of an outlaw 60's psychic cabal--performing bloody rituals to raise Beli Ya'al, source of unlimited power, and with stereotypical S.F. cop Larry Foggia assigned to track down the giant, a.k.a. the ``Fog City Satan.'' What redeems the story somewhat--aside from brisk pacing--is Masterton's genuinely inventive horror imagination, which sparks as Larry explores S.F.'s psychic underworld (and a couple of Play-Doh females) and encounters such oddities as hands that grow faces that speak; ectoplasm-eating entities that shrink a human into a husk in seconds; and, finally, Beli Ya'al himself, 12 feet of drop-dead gorgeous maniac brought back to life in a schooner long-buried beneath the city's landfill. Masterton has talent, but here it's going mainly to toxic waste. -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Enthralling, Yet Absurd At Times
By A Customer
"Master of Lies" opens with a rather gruesome murder scene--of the Berry family being ritualistically killed by the Fog City Satan, a man who has killed five families in California so far in order to resurrect Belial (aka Beli Ya'al), a fallen angel. If you can get through this first chapter, then you can probably make it through the rest of the book.
Thirty-eight-year-old Detective Larry Foggia is assigned to the case because of his unconventional methods of solving crimes. His investigation leads him into the occult--seances, talking hands, shrinking people, and the like. But as he delves deeper into the supernatural, his life and soul--including those of his family--become greatly at risk of being taken by Belial.
Generally, I don't like reading books that have extremely long chapters (this one averages about 37 pages a chapter), but once I started "Master of Lies" I couldn't put it down, probably because of the graphic first chapter. The beginning half of the book is enthralling, but as the story progresses, it began to get a little absurd, i.e., magically-shrinking women; so I had to give it a 4-star rating instead of a 5. However, I'd still recommend this book to Masterton fans, as well as Dean Koontz fans who are into the supernatural horror genre.

A great book, once again, from the MASTER(ton) of horror. it was greatly written and action to the end. This was one of hi GORIEST books around. It is a GREAT reading!! I recommend this book to all horror fans. Masterton is the most UNDERATED auther i ever seen. In my opinion he can out do Dean Koontz and Stephen King by far. At least with MASTERTON I never fall asleep. I've read eight of his novels and will try and collect them all to prove that he is the best horror writer around.

Brutal and ghastly horror
By Jim Lay
Homicide detective Larry Foggia has a real problem on his hands. So does the entire city of San Francisco. A serial killer is on the loose and he kills with such violence and cruelty he is dubbed "The Fog City Satan". In the killer's twisted mind, he is sacrificing people to raise an ancient demon who will give him immortal powers. Unfortunately for Larry Foggia and all of humanity, his plan is working. Beneath the city, a dark God imprisoned for centuries is about to take over the throne of humanity. He is The Master of Lies and the oceans will fill with blood when he rises from his tomb... Graham Masterton is one of the absolute masters of horror fiction. Nobody can touch his imagination and ability to scare readers. Even though I'm a huge horror fan, the first chapter of this book was so saddistic and bloody, I was almost afraid to keep reading. Highly recommended to horror fans who think they can't be shocked or scared anymore.

Uncanny research! You can finally understand Hank!
By Gerald L. Russell
While Chet Flippo's work is easy to dismiss as "fictionalized," Flippo is by no means flippant! His research is astounding. Flippo was the
(1) first to visit sanitariums where Hank was committed for alcoholism to examine old records;
(2) first to research and diagnose Hank as spina bifida;
(3) first to reveal and publish Hank's final song lyrics which were found on the floor of his Cadillac;
(4) first to reveal Hank's meeting with a Catholic priest on July 15, 1951, in which Hank was advised of his fatal and ultimately crippling condition;
(5) first to reveal the co-author of Hank's "Cold, Cold Heart";
(6) first to print extensive dialogue from Hank's "Health and Happiness Shows" which was not released to the public until 1993.
Try as you may to find contradictions in Flippo's facts, you can't. Is there any doubt that, with Flippo's research, he was able to get inside the man as no one else has been able or willing to? Yes, I've read SING A SAD SONG and HANK WILLIAMS: THE BIOGRAPHY many times, but neither is as entertaining, informative, or satisfying as this work. This book is a
must-read.

A gritty, non-flattering look at the life of this pioneer
By A Customer
An almost pathetic view of a country "super-star," and his reliance to alcohol, narcotics, and women. A picture of an illierate "hill-billy" and his tyranic first wife. Hiram Williams was a man of great talent and personal appeal who let his life spin out of control, resulting in his death at the age of 29.

Flippo's artistic mistake
By R.T. Castleberry
Chet Flippo should have been the perfect person to write a biography of Hank Williams. A Texan and a fan and collector of Williams music, Flippo was the editor at Rolling Stone that brought country music to the magazine. Later he wrote for the New York Times, New York and Texas Monthly. For 5 years he served as Billboard's Nashville bureau chief. And when he passed away in 2013 he was working as the editorial director for CMT and CMT.com. He had the credits and the background for the work. And he did his research: interviewing friends and band mates of the singer; trolling the archives of the Country Music Hall of Fame; digging out tapes of old programs that Williams appeared on. Late in the game, he was given access to the private letters of Williams' first wife, Audrey. However suspect her intentions were, (Audrey made claims on the estate and fan's memories despite the fact she had divorced Williams some time before he died.) Flippo used her correspondence heavily in the book.
So Flippo had the journalistic background, the information and writing ability when he sat down to write. But that's exactly when he went off the rails. Rather than produce a factual, history-oriented biography Flippo went in a different, dubious artistic direction: he decided to rely on Audrey's letters to "recreate" scenes and conversations from Hank's life and career. It's the kind of cheapjack solution that producers of second-rate movies use to develop "intimacy" where no reliable information is available. It also steers the book toward some tawdry and unconscionable areas, like Williams' sex life and drug addiction, while giving only the scantiest sketches of people important to his career or looks at his work methods.
Flippo was able to discover some heretofore unknown information about Williams, like the spina bifada, undetected for most of his life, that caused him so much back pain and the fact that Williams' sometimes bought from other writers the lines and titles for some of his songs. But Flippo also pads an already thin book by, for example, spending nearly an entire chapter "reimagining" the funeral oration at Williams' memorial service.
Williams led a painful, tough, shamefully short life. He wrote and performed some beautiful, mournful music, work that resonates many decades after his death. He deserved a much better book from a distinguished writer who was also a professed fan than the one Flippo produced here.

Have A 2 Year Old Boy? Then Buy This Book
By mayfayre
I don't know what it is about 2 year old boys, but when they reach that age they become fascinated with machinery. I've experienced it with all of my nephews, and the latest addition to our family is no different.

This is a large-size, full-color, board book - meaning the pages are thick and sturdy. All it consists of are photographs of real motorized machinery, taken from various angles, with the names of each vehicle shown. There's a page devoted to types of cars, types of trains, types of boats, types of airplanes, types of construction vehicles, types of farm vehicles and types of emergency/city vehicles. So it covers all the bases and is full of images to bring joy to a little boy's heart.

My nephew reads this book every night with his father. Then he reads it over with me when I babysit him. There is just something so adorable seeing a 2 year old seriously pointing out a combine harvester or a dump truck as if it was the most important thing in the world. Not to mention the fact that it's a good item to use if you want the little one to have some quiet time. So if you've got a little boy in your family, or one that you need a gift for, I'd give this book two thumbs up.

Enough already
By amciv
Mr. Priddy, how could you? This book should be classified as a controlled substance. Our twin toddlers are so addicted to First 100 Machines that they continue to "request" it after a year of repeated readings, often 3 or 4 times in a row. Another gripe is with the quality of construction of the book. It has disintegrated and now is just a pile of tattered, chewed, well loved pages. We have been forced to re-bind the book (twice) with packing tape. Is there not a warranty you can give the parents of your wide-eyed minions? We give the book 5 stars.

About the Author

Roger Priddy is the creator of over two hundred best selling books for young children including Wipe Clean ABC, First 100 Words, and Fuzzy Bee.

When he was at school he couldn’t decide between being a patisserie chef or going to art college. On the advice of his father he chose art college and trained as an illustrator before becoming a designer at Usborne Publishing.

Roger’s love for children’s early learning has led him to create some of the most successful children’s non-fiction books, first at Dorling Kindersley (My First Word Book, Incredible Cross Sections and My First Cook Book) before he set up Priddy Books with St. Martins Press in New York where several of his books have sold over a million copies each including My Big Animal Book and Happy Baby Words.

In total he has sold over 65 million books worldwide and his books have been translated into over 30 languages.

He says “It is always rewarding to see a child enjoying and learning something from one of our books, especially the babies when you think it could be the first book they have ever seen.

I am very lucky to have a career where you get to think up fun ways to teach a kid how to write their letters and learn their first words whilst finding out about Dinosaurs at the same time!”

Roger lives with his wife Zena in London and Cork, Ireland (when it’s not raining, which isn’t very often!) They have four children Sam, Rose, Alannah and Gabriel (and a dog called Wallace) who have given him most of his best ideas for his books. He still loves baking bread and cakes!

Awesome for learning colors
By cheniseq
This book has helped my daughter with her colors tremendously! We go through each page and talk about each object and its color. She now asks for her "blue yogurt" in the morning that's in a blue package. And her "pink blanket" for bed time.

The longer the better
By cup o tea
This book will be useful for years.
My 5 month old loves this book, as did the twin two year olds I used to baby sit. My son kicks and wiggles when I pull this book out, and he puts his hands all over the images. I point to each apple and say apple as I find all of the apples in the image. I think the repetition and the similarity are coming together for him better than in any other book of colors or counting I have found because of their random locations and sizes.
The twins got to show off their ability to recognize words they could not yet pronounce by pointing when you asked them "Where is the flamingo?" or "Do you see a flower?"
Grouping the images by color makes each page you turn to feel fresh and interesting.

Great book
By Rebecca Hirt
When I first saw this book, I thought the pictures too garish for a child, especially the red page. However, my six year old granddaughter was almost two and wouldn't put it down so we bought it for her birthday. Now her sister enjoys it as much as she did. I bought two books, one for a two year old and one for a three year old. It is a wonderful book for helping a two year old learn colors and to find and identify things on the page. By three, they are counting the objects. I like this version better than the board book which is smaller with the same pictures making the pages more crowded because of less white space.

The Golden Age of the Newspaper, by George H. Douglas

From the arrival of the penny papers in the 1830s to the coming of radio news around 1930, the American newspaper celebrated its Golden Age and years of greatest influence on society. Born in response to a thirst for news in large eastern cities such as New York, Boston, and Philadelphia, the mood of the modern metropolitan papers eventually spread throughout the nation. Douglas tells the story of the great innovators of the American press―men like Bennett, Greeley, Bryant, Dana, Pulitzer, Hearst, and Scripps. He details the development of the bond between newspapers and the citizens of a democratic republic and how the newspapers molded themselves into a distinctly American character to become an intimate part of daily life.

Technological developments in papermaking, typesetting, and printing, as well as the growth of advertising, gradually made possible huge metropolitan dailies with circulations in the hundreds of thousands. Soon journalism became a way of life for a host of publishers, editors, and reporters, including the early presence of a significant number of women. Eventually, feature sections arose, including comics, sports, puzzles, cartoons, advice columns, and sections for women and children. The hometown daily gave way to larger and impersonal newspaper chains in the early twentieth century. This comprehensive and lively account tells the story of how newspapers have influenced public opinion and how public demand has in turn affected the presentation of the news.

From Library Journal
Grade 9 Up-A history of U.S. newspapers from the arrival of the penny papers in 1830 to the height of the industry's publishing in the early 1930s. Douglas attributes the onset of radio to the fading of newspapers as a social force. This browsable volume offers readers glimpses of the men and women who made American journalism the crass, clumsy, down and dirty, but always exciting medium it remains today. Of course there are chapters on Horace Greeley and James Gordon Bennett, Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst, Charles Dana, and women in the pressroom (especially Nellie Bly). Chains; tabloids; the rise of the New York Times; and that glorious oddity of nature, tobacco, and gin-the reporter-are covered as well. Douglas seems to be prejudiced in favor of newspapers as a form of news delivery as opposed to television. He also suggests that today's TV journalism is more homogenized than the homogeneous press of that golden age of newspaper past-an argument that seems both specious and nostalgic. The illustrations are few, but interesting, and the writing, though stiff, is clear and easy to skim. Edwin Emery's The Press and America (Allyn & Bacon, 1995) and Frank L. Mott's American Journalism (Macmillan, 1962; o.p.) covers the same material, but Douglas may be the only one to do it in under 300 pages.

Introducing the Dante Papers Trilogy: Introductory Papers on Dante Further Papers on Dante The Poetry of Search and the Poetry of Statement Dr. Sayers' Further Papers on Dante will be warmly welcomed by all who read her Introductory Papers on Dante and by those hundreds more who want to know more about this astonishing poet newly disclosed to them by her vivid Penguin translation of the Inferno and the Purgatorio. The first series dealt mainly with the theological and ethical aspects of the Divine Comedy. The present one is more heterogeneous and pays more attention to the literary and poetic aspects of Dante's work. Here and there an attempt is made to rescue Dante from the exalted isolation in which he stands, and to compare with him other poets writing on similar themes. 'To label any poet hors concours is in a manner to excommunicate him' This is not a work of popularization, but Dr. Sayers has in a high degree the ability to make things plain and readable for the general reader while at the same time revealing much that scholars may have overlooked.

murder at the academy awards
By Philip WASIK
Joe was a personal friend who told me back in Oct,1993 he had written "Murder at the Academy Awards" for Elke Sommer and that it was a pity that it never became a movie. I also recommend his autobiography "Mislaid in Hollywood", "Zen in the Martial Arts", "Little Boy Lost", and "Bogie". Joe Hyams passed away 08 Nov 2008. I miss him, but have the aforementioned books and others to remember him by.

You're seeing your father for the first time in five years, and although he's nice enough, he might be, well--how can you put this delicately?--a loser.

You can't speak English, but that doesn't stop you from working at East Meets West, your father's gift shop in a strip mall, where everything is new.

Welcome to the wonderful world of David Kim.

From Publishers Weekly
In this charming tale of family, community and the struggle for understanding, young Korean immigrant David Kim learns to acculturate to a new American life. After five years on their own in Seoul, 12-year-old David, his big sister and mother reunite with his father in Oakbridge, N.J. Now known as Harry, David's father has a gift shop in a rundown strip mall called Peddlers Town. Though told largely by a grown-up David, some chapters switch to a third-person voice to examine other characters, including members of the Kim family and the other store owners at Peddler's Town (including an American with a cross-dressing son and a down-on-his-luck detective). Woo eschews immigrant clichés to focus on complicated familial relationships and surprising, sympathetic characters; alternating between humor and melancholy, Woo's text strikes a true chord while drawing readers into its strange, strip-mall world. From Booklist
Newly arrived in the States from Korea in the early 1980s, Dae Joon, 12, does not know his dad and does not want to. Father left five years ago to make a home for his family in New Jersey. Now Dae Joon (“David” in America) and his older sister must adapt to a new world, working after school in Dad’s Asian gift store in the shabby Peddlers Town mall, attending ESL classes with their embarrassing parents, and discovering secrets and betrayal. Told in sharp, immediate vignettes, mostly from the boy’s viewpoint, this debut novel captures the contemporary immigration struggle, but it is also an elemental family drama of fury and tenderness, affecting all the characters. Dae Joon’s mother cannot speak the language and remains angry that her husband left her behind so long. But what about Dae Joon’s loneliness? Woo also shows the ironic satisfactions that come with speaking a second language: the joy of insulting locals to their faces without their understanding. A great addition to the titles listed in Booklist’s “Core Collection: The New Immigration Story” (August 2005). --Hazel Rochman

Review

“A tender, funny, beautifully written novel-in-stories, each a sparkling step in the coming-of-age journey of a boy straddling two cultures with remarkable humor and grace. First-time author Sung Woo has created both lasting characters and a timeless portrait of a community.” ―A. Manette Ansay, author of Vinegar Hill and Blue Water

“In its clear-eyed take on family and community, Everything Asian is Everything American. The proprietors of this roadside New Jersey shopper's village are by turns dreamy and despairing as their fortunes--like the local economy--change. Sung J. Woo has crafted a debut rich in character and event.” ―Stewart O'Nan, author of Songs for the Missing

“Cleverly concatenated...recounts with both humor and pathos growing up and gradual Americanization. A novel that both delights and instructs.” ―Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

Quite Refreshing
By Maryam
While witty and entertaining, this debut novel also offers readers a heartfelt understanding of an array of characters making up a small strip- mall community in suburban New Jersey. The main emphasis of the novel is on the Kims, a Korean family of immigrants who manage 'East Meets West,' an oriental themed store. The majority of excerpts in the novel are told from the viewpoint of the innocent, young, and patient David Kim who bears his sister's moodiness and his father's empty promises with quite straightforward and honest curiosity. Kim's genuine narratives are quite refreshing. He doesn't sugarcoat his experiences; he tells them as they are. The Kims, like any other family, are dysfunctional at times, and reading through a multitude of experiences (some serious and others hilarious), you come to love the Kim family, flaws and all. A great read!

Worth the time to read, laugh and savor
By A. Sloane
I thoroughly enjoyed Sung Woo's book. The world of young David in Everything Asian is a real delight to read. David's views on his new life in New Jersey are spot on for anyone who was not born in the U.S. and the other characters come to life in each chapter that is devoted to their own stories. I found the book to be lighthearted in many ways but at the same time, it dealt with some important passages in life. David's sense of humor and pathos is so palpable and real. I highly recommend spending the time to read Sung Woo's book. I don't think you will be disappointed.

an enjoyable story for all cultures
By Shepherds rule
Bravo to Sung J. Woo on this entertaining novel!
Being an avid fan of murder, mystery, and suspense, this is not the type book that I would typically choose to read. Occasionally I venture into a very different genre and, in this case, I am very happy I did.
Everything Asian is an easy read. This young author exhibits great talent in weaving the complexities of the Kim's family dynamics in what appears on the surface to be a relatively mundane existence.
I particularly enjoyed the way the relationship between brother and sister was depicted. The array of emotions and the unique bond shared between siblings proves to be a common thread of all cultures.
Along with the differences among mankind comes a unique commonality - this is the message I took from this book.
Another strong suit of this author is the way he interjects humor into his work. It's delightful.
As the story progressed, I found myself developing an attachment to the characters, rooting for their success. One cannot help but grow fond of David. And despite his human frailties, the father eventually elicited my empathy in the end.
Although this novel is about the trials and tribulations of an Asian family immigrating to America as seen through the eyes of a young boy, the story transcends cultural boundaries.
I am truly looking forward to the release of the next book by Sung J. Woo.
