Needs more accuracy, even for a toddler
By CaliSmock
Nice book, but not accurate. There are four pictures that have bad English descriptions. Listed are the given names and their true name:
Mini loader - Skid steer loader
Digger - back hoe loader
Scrapper - motor grader
With the errors, there are two pages that have excavadoras. My two-year-old knows the correct names in English; we would like to have the correct Spanish names.

Love this collection
By M. Herranz
What I like about this picture book is that it teaches me, the mom, the names of different construction vehicles and machines that I had no idea what they were called so I can name them for my little guy when he sees them somewhere. And of course, love that there is one picture per page, simple, easy, engaging.

Great book
By Mama Rose
Priddy books are my favorite book series for toddlers and babies. The pictures are clear and bright. The layout is simple with brightly colored contrasting backgrounds. The text is easy to read in a fun font. The ideas are straightforward and clearly presented. Many books for toddlers and babies try to correlate images and concepts that just don't make sense. This truck book includes all of my two year old son 's favorite trucks. This is his favorite book. My only criticism is that the binding comes apart. We have five board books from the Priddy series and all of them have fallen apart. It could be because these are the books that we have read and handled the most. I do think that the publisher could improve the quality of the binding. Nonetheless, I heartily recommend this book and other Priddy board books.

Military Assistance: An Operational Perspective (Contributions in Military Studies), by William H. Mott IV

This work provides a theoretical and historical examination of the relationship between provision of military assistance and success in achieving donor aims. Eight case studies, which include the American Revolution, the Napoleonic Wars, and the Vietnam War, are examined to assess four prominent features of the donor-recipient relationship: the convergence of donor and recipient aims; donor control; commitment of donor military forces; and coherence of donor policies and strategies. As an essential part of the expanding body of multidisciplinary international scholarship, this book links history and theory to policy and narrows the gap between economics, political science, and military strategy.

Each chapter refines the relevant features of the observed donor-recipient relationships into a pattern for comparison with other episodes. The final chapter collects the observations, compares them, and develops a set of uniformities that suggest a prototypical, successful donor-recipient relationship, suitable for direct application as a policy paradigm or for theoretical investigation. Mott suggests that both donor and recipient governments can use military assistance as a deliberate instrument of national policy and military strategy to achieve national aims.

From School Library Journal
Grade 7 Up-Profiles of approximately 150 20th-century inventions, from Post-Its to Murphy beds, gumball machines to the Internet. Arranged in small groups beneath 42 rubrics-"Frozen Foods," "Home Video," "Personal Hygiene Products"-the articles include specific but nontechnical discussions of the invention's development, principles, and components, and conclude with a short list of both print and electronic resources. The volume opens with a useful overview plus a time line, 1623-1999, and closes with a skimpy general index. Written in dry, passive-voice prose and scantly illustrated with drab black-and-white photos, this title merits consideration as, at best, a secondary purchase behind Pauline Webb and Mark Suggitt's Gadgets and Necessities (ABC-CLIO, 2000) or Roger Bridgman's superficial but more visually appealing 1000 Inventions and Discoveries (DK, 2002).

For many Americans, Sweden used to conjure images of Viking raiders and settlers. By contrast, contemporary Sweden is one of the world's most advanced nations in terms of politics, social welfare, gender equality, standard of living, technology, the arts, and participation in regional and global developments. Nordstrom traces the history of Sweden, detailing its prehistory and Viking past.

This book shows how a country governed for years by a European monarchial system slowly―and at times grudgingly―changed into the egalitarian, democratic system of today. Starting with an introduction on Sweden's geography, people, and government, Nordstrom examines the political and cultural history of the country in six chapters. Also included are a bibliographical essay, an index, and a biographical section with portraits of more than 50 noteworthy Swedes, making this narrative account is the most up-to-date general history of Sweden available.

Well written comprehensive overview of Swedish history
By Padraig Costello
Unlike the previous comment on this book I have to say I did not find this a dry history at all. While not in the Tom Holland ilk, it is written in a way that addresses the reader. It is informative and clear. Nordstrom has chosen to break up the book into different eras of history and within these write about the different strands, e.g. political, economic, social history. This is a difficult task, especially as he covers over 2000 years of history in about 160 pages. All in all, considering the size constraints, he has done an admirable job. Well done to him, I have enjoyed reading his book. I only wish there were more Swedish history books available on kindle so I could further my interest in it.

Writing in the Dark: Essays on Literature and Politics, by David Grossman

Throughout his career, David Grossman has been a voice for peace and reconciliation between Israel and its Arab citizens and neighbors. In these six essays on politics and culture in Israel, he addresses the conscience of a country that has lost faith in its leaders and its ideals. The collection includes an already famous speech concerning the disastrous Second Lebanon War of 2006, the war that took the life of Grossman's twenty-one-year-old son, Uri.

Moving, human, clear-sighted, and courageous, touching on literature and artistic creation as well as politics and philosophy, these writings are a cri de coeur from "a writer who has been, for nearly two decades, one of the most original and talented not only in his own country, but anywhere" (The New York Times Book Review).

From Publishers Weekly
Peace activist and vocal advocate for relinquishing the Territories and ending the Occupation, Israeli novelist Grossman is unafraid of controversy; these six essays, however, address these concerns more obliquely, through the lens of literature. Books That Have Read Me merges the young reader's discovery that books are the place in the world where both the thing and the loss of it can be contained with the older writer's urge to describe contemporary political reality in a language that is not the public, general, nationalized idiom. Grossman's passions are two—an Israel at peace with its neighbors and a citizenry restored to dignity through the individual language of literature, which can bring us together with the fate of those who are distant and foreign. Grossman lays claim to an acquired naïveté in his hopefulness; how welcome and enlightening it is. (Oct.)

The best collection of essays I've read in years
By G. Dawson
Writing in the Dark is a collection of essays on literature and politics by David Grossman, possibly one of the world's best living writers. This slim volume contains only 6 essays, but there's more insight and intelligence packed into these 131 pages than resides in most books. In perfectly crafted prose, Grossman speaks personally and passionately about his writing life: "I write, and the world does not close in on me. It does not grow smaller. It moves in the direction of what is open, future, possible. I imagine, and the act of imagination revives me."

Many of these essays touch on Grossman's love of reading and the effect of literature on his life. In one essay, he describes reading a good book: "I read the book over the course of one day and night in a total frenzy of the senses, and my feeling--which now slightly embarrasses me--will be familiar to anyone who has been in love: it was the knowledge that this other person or thing was meant only for me."

In addition to writing and reading, a couple of these essays touch on politics, particularly in relation to Israel, but this is not a political book in the usual sense. Grossman clarifies, "I am not planning to talk 'politics,' but rather to address the intimate, internal processes that occur among those who live in a disaster zone, and the role of literature and writing in a climate as lethal as the one we live in."

Without a doubt, this is the best collection of essays I've read in years. I'm perplexed as to why this book has not received the attention it so clearly deserves.

A cry in the wilderness?
By R. M. Peterson
David Grossman is an Israeli, born in Jerusalem in 1954. His father immigrated from Galicia in the 1930s and his mother was a Jew from Palestine. Writing in Hebrew, he has distinguished himself as a writer both of fiction and non-fiction. I confess that I had a difficult time getting into his fiction and I aborted my two attempts. Not so with his non-fiction. "The Yellow Wind", "Sleeping on a Wire", and "Death as a Way of Life" are among the finest and most perceptive books I have read on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. (For those not familiar with Grossman's non-fiction, be forewarned that he is a peace activist and a staunch critic of prevailing Israeli policy.)

WRITING IN THE DARK is not quite on the same plane as those three earlier books. It is a collection of six essays (or speeches) from between 1998 and 2007. As is almost inevitable with such collections, there is a certain measure of disjointedness or diffusion of focus. For the most part, they do not directly address the political situation in Israel or the schism between Israelis and Palestinians. The most "political" essay is the fifth (and best) one, "Contemplations on Peace", a lecture from 2004. In it Grossman considers how peace would help Israel develop normally as a state and society, perhaps even allow for the realization of a once fervently held dream of "a moral and just society, a society with a humanistic, spiritual vision, a society that would manage to integrate modern life with the ethics of the prophets and the finest Jewish values." Grossman fears that the protracted and constant state of war and anxiety will end up permanently stunting the development of Israel as a nation and that of its citizens as people. He also is concerned about rebutting in a meaningful way the view, among certain circles, "that the entire State of Israel--not only the settlements--is an act of colonial, capitalist injustice, carried out by an apartheid regime, detached from historical, national, and cultural motives, and therefore illegitimate."

Another theme of the essays, the predominant one even, is how literature -- both writing and reading literature -- can be a means for transcending the propaganda and dehumanization so prevalent in a nation or society in a state of war. The point is a valid one, but in these essays, as collected here in one book, Grossman belabors it and, at times, mystifies it. Much of the discussion is far too abstract, almost mystical, and at times the writing (when I do understand it) is too precious. Even so, the book is well worth getting just for the last three essays, especially "Contemplations on Peace."

Packs a lot of intellect into a tiny book
By Dustin Stein
I am always skeptical of collections of essays because they usually lack focus and cohesion. Collections of essays seem more likely to be the result of megalomania than a clear and organized plan. This book is different though, Grossman is at his sharpest in these observational essays. Yes, he is guilty of my criticism; most of these essays had been given as lectures or at conferences but they reveal the inner workings of one of the most talented living writers. Even one not familiar with Grossman's work will enjoy the approach he takes towards his various subjects--never falling too far from politics.

From Library Journal
Bacon, a Hollywood columnist and friend of Gleason, has written an entertaining, if adulatory, biography of the poor Brooklyn kid and small-time pool hustler who grew up to become one of television's most famous comedians. Through the cooperation of Gleason and his family and friends, Bacon has spiced his narrative with personal anecdotes that pull no punches. Gleason is shown to be a hard-drinking, hard-living, big spender, whose natural comedy talents are unparalleled but very difficult to live with. Though Gleason declares that he is not an alcoholic, there's a a lot of emphasis on booze in this book. Marcia L. Perry, Berkshire Athenaeum, Pittsfield, Mass.

Midnight Sun, by Ramsey Campbell

Ben Sterling brings his wife and children to his childhood village, where in a great forest, an old house holds the promise of all their dreams. But among the pines something seems to be gathering, glittering in the icy air. "A masterpiece. . . ."--Kirkus. HC: Tor.

From Publishers Weekly
"Trees grow," wrote the dying Edward Sterling in the frozen earth of the forest in Stargrave, England, that became his burial ground. As his grandson Ben learns, in Campbell's beautifully poetic horror novel, the elder Sterling was answering a call from a primordial species of snow that devours humans. Ben becomes a conduit for the gluttony of this creeping arctic cold, slowly losing his reason with each victim that the entity claims, as he succumbs to its promise of immortality in exchange for the lives of his neighbors. This icy menace can succeed only through manipulating Ben's consciousness, and he cooperates--until it hunts his family. Campbell's ( Ancient Images ) artful use of metaphor paints a frightening portrait of a world tilting into chaos and the price that must be paid to save it. This absorbing novel again demonstrates the author's mastery of the horror genre.

From School Library Journal
YA--Midnight Sun is not of the slasher, gorefest variety that passes for horror in much of the genre today. Instead, Campbell has skillfully crafted an intellectual, poetic, yet very readable thriller. Children's book writer Ben Sterling has returned to his boyhood home in the remote English country town of Stargrave. It was there that his grandfather, folklorist Edward Sterling, was found frozen to death and Ben's parents died under mysterious circumstances. Ben, now married with children, is drawn back to Stargrave by an ancient, alien lifeforce that takes possession of him as a gateway to control the world. Campbell expertly uses language to create a coiled, tense atmosphere and produce a chilling tale in the tradition of John Wyndom's Midwich Cuckoos (Ballantine, 1957; o.p.) or John Christopher's Possessors (S. & S., 1964; o.p.) A welcome addition to any horror collection.

Something Frigid This Way Comes...
By Bruce Rux
Ellen is worried about her husband, successful children's book author Ben Sterling. Ever since inheriting the family house in isolated Stargrave, his old childhood demons have been reemerging. Ben's father was crazy - he traveled to the ends of the earth researching legends of the midnight sun, and committed suicide by stripping naked in a snowy clearing - and Ellen is beginning to be afraid Ben might just be a chip off the old block.
But soon something starts scaring her worse - Ben's insistence that an eldritch god is awakening in Stargrave to reshape the planet in its image seems less a fantasy than when he and his crazy father first started spouting the idea. Stargrave is changing. It's getting colder. More isolated. The trees, the snow, the very frost itself, increasingly appears to be rearranging itself into that god's own image. Which means, perhaps, that Ben isn't a madman at all, but a genuine prophet - and if that is the case, then the end of the world is at hand...
This is one of Campbell's best, and that's saying a lot. The novel is uneven, and could have been structured better, but overall it's a steadily mounting masterpiece of menace. It's most reminiscent of Algernon Blackwood and H. P. Lovecraft, in that its horror is genuinely cosmic and never truly seen except for the effects of its presence. Dramatically, it's highly reminiscent of Stephen King's The Shining, in that a snowbound woman protects her children from her increasingly unstable (and quite possibly dangerous) husband, with an unseen supernatural being influencing events from the frozen shadows.
Sadly - like most of Campbell's best work - this book is out of print, but it's well worth trying to find anyway if you're a fan of well-crafted, creep-up-behind-you horror.

One of Campbell's least satisfying novels
By Daniel Jolley
In Midnight Sun, Ramsey Campbell attempted to write a novel in the traditional, atmospheric horror style; in my opinion, he had only limited success in doing so. I have seen a couple of people place this novel alongside the best of Algernon Blackwood and Arthur Machen, but in my opinion it falls far short of such a lofty mark. I don't think it is in any way Lovecraftian either, I should add. I've read a good many of Campbell's novels, and this is by far the most problematic of the bunch for me. The story is built around some type of preternaturally remarkable presence lurking within the forest outside Ben Sterling's childhood home, a presence that has called Ben home to unwittingly pursue its agenda of remaking the world in its own ice-cold image. The first section of the novels introduces us to Ben as a child. As an eight-year-old, he runs away from his aunt's home and makes his way to the gravesite of his family, all of whom had recently died in an automobile accident. Just before he can figure something mysterious out, he is returned to the home of his aunt, where we find him perusing the stories written by a singular ancestor of his, tales and legends brought home from the northern lands of the midnight sun. His aunt seems quite wary of the book and gets rid of it, but the stories have already planted themselves in Ben's mind. We then jump to the present, which finds Ben moving back to the Sterling home of his childhood with his wife Ellen, daughter Margaret, and son Ben. From that point on, it's one incredibly drawn-out process of watching Ben change as the mysterious forces at work in the dark forest prepare the way for the mysterious reawakening of a force older than man.
The strange woods outside the Sterling home are of utmost importance in the events of this story, but Ramsey Campbell went a little overboard on his descriptions of it. Every other page seemed to contain yet another lengthy appraisal of the strangeness of the forest, the mist above the forest, the way the forest seemed to move, etc. There also seems to be about a sentence apiece for every single snowflake that falls during the blizzard-like winter serving as the backdrop of events. Campbell just repeats himself over and over again to a frustrating degree, and this in fact works against his attempts to make the woods seem exotically creepy. On another note, I became frustrated with Ben's obvious change in personality and his wife's repeated dismissal of any problem until the very end; anyone who keeps turning off my heat during a blizzard is going to have some words from me, I can assure you, and this is the least of Ben's obvious problems. In this same vein, I have to point out my own displeasure at seeing the center of vision change from Ben to Ellen over the course of the second half of the book; this helps build the suspense for Ben's big (and ultimately disappointing) surprise, but I did not really like being thrown out of the main character's mind just when I was getting to know it. Reaching the ending of Midnight Sun took more work and time than it should have, and the ultimate reward is no reward at all. Suddenly, with only the weakest of a reason, Ben's thinking totally changes; this major plot point is not explained adequately at all, and it struck a major blow to my ultimate enjoyment of the story.
Midnight Sun could have been much shorter than it is without losing much of anything. What it really needs, though, is a plausible ending that doesn't leave the reader feeling cheated. I am a big fan of traditional horror, so I am not criticizing the genre when I say that this attempt at such writing falls far short of the bar set by the true masters of the early twentieth century.

A big disappointment
By skytwo
As a fan of H.P. Lovecraft, Campbell's early work seemed like the perfect choice for me when I decided to read a horror novel for the first time in ages. I wasn't looking for a Lovecraft imitator, but the framework for the story (similar to Lovecraft's "Lurker at the Threshhold") seemed promisingly horror-inducing, and the author seems to have no shortage of admirers.
Early on, the book seemed to be competently, but not outstandingly, written. But the greatest feat of the mysterious-force-emerging-from-the-forest story is that it manages to take nearly 400 pages getting to a ham-handed climax while telegraphing in every plot point about fifty pages before its actual arrival.
After reading reviews that made much of Campbell's "literariness," it was also disappointing to find that not only was this book a total bore, but only a shade more literary than typical airport fare. In short, the prose was as anemic as the plot.
Reveiwers seem to laud Campbell for being both literate and entertaining. This book, sadly, is neither. But I suspect that the folks who spent their high school careers cajoling English teachers into letting them write book reports on Stephen King are now patting themselves on the back for moving on to such heavy hitters as Campbell.

Joe Golem and the Drowning City: An Illustrated Novel, by Mike Mignola, Christopher Golden

In 1925, earthquakes and a rising sea level left Lower Manhattan submerged under more than thirty feet of water, so that its residents began to call it the Drowning City. Those unwilling to abandon their homes created a new life on streets turned to canals and in buildings whose first three stories were underwater. Fifty years have passed since then, and the Drowning City is full of scavengers and water rats, poor people trying to eke out an existence, and those too proud or stubborn to be defeated by circumstance.

Among them are fourteen-year-old Molly McHugh and her friend and employer, Felix Orlov. Once upon a time Orlov the Conjuror was a celebrated stage magician, but now he is an old man, a psychic medium, contacting the spirits of the departed for the grieving loved ones left behind. When a seance goes horribly wrong, Felix Orlov is abducted by strange men wearing gas masks and rubber suits, and Molly soon finds herself on the run.

Her flight will lead her into the company of a mysterious man, and his stalwart sidekick, Joe Golem, whose own past is a mystery to him, but who walks his own dreams as a man of stone and clay, brought to life for the sole purpose of hunting witches.

Review
Joe Golem and the Drowning City is that most marvelous kind of book--wholly original and yet completely accessible. Set in a unique world full of vivid and moving characters, it is gritty, mysterious, moving, and surprising. A brilliant combination of steampunk, fantasy, mystery, and adventure (David Liss, author of The Twelfth Enchantment)

A race against supernatural disaster through a haunting, dreamlike, and partially submerged New York City full of freaks, ghosts, and other lost souls, a story that grabs from the first page and doesn't let go. (Tad Williams)

Joe Golem and the Drowning City is a warm, wicked, frantic tale of noble monsters and monstrous men. Not merely weird and not simply gorgeous, this supernatural steampunk fable is intimate and profound. It is dreadful and sublime. (Cherie Priest)

Mignola's affectionate, Kirby-esque portraits compliment Golden's imaginative, YA-friendly prose. (Kirkus)

The steampunk supernatural world the authors have created is unique and inventive…. Recommended for fans of Hellboy, dystopian novels, and those who like a little horror with their action stories. (Library Journal)

A wild, imaginative adventure
By Eric J. Guignard
REVIEWED: Joe Golem and the Drowning City: An Illustrated Novel
WRITTEN BY: Christopher Golden and illustrated by Mike Mignola
PUBLISHED: March, 2012

Great, fun book. A wild, imaginative adventure in an alternative sinking New York, amongst a cast of strange specters, magic rites, and steampunk. Imagine the grittiest visions of Batman's Gotham City being submerged and taken over by H.P. Lovecraft - that's a visual to the world that Christopher Golden has created. The book was rich in story that twisted like a wicked serpent and seduces you with its beautiful smile. Mignola's artwork, though infrequent, is characteristic of his deconstructed style that tells a vignette through a simple image.

Joe Golem and the Drowning City
By Shawn McKissick
First let me start by saying that this is an "illustrated novel" and is not to be confused with "graphic novel." Some people expect an illustrated novel to be like a comic, but it is not. It is a novel with the occasional illustration. If you've read any of Golden's previous novels with Mignola, then you know what to expect.
If you are expecting a comic book form, then it is your mistake for confusing illustrated novel with graphic novel. They are not the same thing.

With that said, this book is very good. It is full of the mystery that Mignola is known for, as well as a well written story that we've come to expect from Golden. This isn't their first novel together, but it is arguably their best so far. Characters are well developed and you will care about them. There is a lot of action and suspense that will keep you turning pages in anticipation for what comes next. The pacing is just right, and the overall plot will keep you guessing.
If you enjoy reading Hellboy novels, then you will enjoy this book.
The only downside is that it ends a bit too soon, and I wish it would have lasted longer...it was that good.

Very entertaining book. Their is a lot of creativity in this book. Great setting, and plotted very well. Would have gotten a five from me had it not been for the main heroine and the villain. I just did not like the heroine. She was a little to generic for my likes. The main villain was also to cliché for me.

Something that Golden did very well was his descriptions. Everything in the book is described vividly. From what the characters look like to the setting. Their is also a great description of something at the end of the book, although I'm not going to spoil it.

Something I was looking forward to was Mignola's illustrations, however I found them somewhat disappointing.

Gr 7 Up-This rigorous A-Z set will be valuable for defining vocabulary such as “friendly fire” or “leaflet bombing,” and identifying people, places, tactics, and campaigns. Included are numerous Russian, Japanese, and German terms such as “Wunderwaffen” (wonder weapons), and “Kotel” (a battle of encirclement). Entries vary in length, from mere definitions to 17 pages (on Adolf Hitler), and are often followed up with “see” or “see-also” references and additional reading suggestions. Appended is an extensive bibliography and a general index with careful cross-referencing and bold main entry notations. There are no illustrations. From Booklist
This “concise” work seeks to provide a synthesis one of the most complex and expansive subjects of the twentieth century and possibly human history into a usable reference tool. In addition to focusing on significant battles, leaders, politics, and diplomacy, author Nolan (International History Institute) devotes considerable attention to issues on the eastern front as well as the effects of the war on peripheral participants and neutrals. Although there is some discussion of related facts, this is not an encyclopedia of the home front, social movements, or the Holocaust. For the most part, this is a work dedicated to the operations, campaigns, battles, and principal political and military actors in what was the most destructive total war to date. Each volume begins with a comprehensive list of entries and 20 black-and-white maps representing engagements in all theaters of the war, for example, the Battle of the Bulge and Leyte Gulf. The alphabetically arranged entries range in length from single lines (Command post, Dime Force, Interdiction, S-phone) to up to several pages for key individuals (Hermann Goring, Henri Pétain), battles, campaigns, and operations (Ardennes Offensive, Philippines, TORCH) as well as general terms (Aircraft carriers, Fascism, Rations). Other examples of entries include Blockade running, Eastern front, Imperial Japanese Navy, RADAR, U-boats, and Yalta Conference. Most of the larger entries include a suggested reading. Numerous see and see also references aid in navigation. Volume 2 concludes with a comprehensive index and a 32-page categorized, select bibliography for further research. Although any work attempting to cover such a huge topic concisely faces the twin pitfalls of selection and exclusion, Nolan has brought his considerable talents and flair for economic and engaging writing to the task and produced what is certainly an impressive reference work, recommended for larger public libraries and undergraduate collections. It may not be a necessary purchase for libraries that already own the five-volume Encyclopedia of World War II: A Political, Social, and Military History (2005), which has numerous black-and-white photographs and several hundred documents in addition to many more entries. Also available as an e-book. --Brian Odom

Review
"This two-volume reference for students and general readers was prepared by Cathal J. Nolan (history, Boston U.), and it falls into the relatively small group of encyclopedias with a single author. He explains in his preface the challenge of compressing the scope and complexity of World War II into an accessible work that offers something more than a superficial review; and he explains his decision to focus on military aspects of the war rather than life on far-reaching social or cultural issues, or the details of diplomacy. His approach is more global than is customary, with much material on often underreported topics such as the Eastern Front and the Sino-Japanese War; and he has aimed to report in an evenhanded manner without service to any particular ideological or nationalist point of view. Approximately 2,800 cross-referenced entries are arranged alphabetically. Some entries are as short as one or two lines while others occupy a few pages. Indexing is in the second volume as is an extensive bibliography, organized thematically." - Reference & Research Book News

"Nolan has brought his considerable talents and flair for economic and engaging writing to the task and produced what is certainly an impressive reference work, recommended for larger public libraries and undergraduate collections." - Booklist

"… best suited for high schools or medium-sized public libraries." - Reference & User Services Quarterly
