The Laws of Land Warfare: A Guide to the U.S. Army Manuals (Contributions in Military Studies), by Donald A. Wells

Although it is generally assumed that there have always been limits to what soldiers are permitted to do in war, it was not until 1863, in the heat of the Civil War, that the United States issued its first Army manual. Subsequently, manuals of land warfare were issued in 1914, 1934, 1940, 1944, 1956, and 1976 by the American military.

In this volume, Wells provides a systematic examination of the evolution of American rules of warfare. In addition to providing the texts of key elements of the manuals and analyzing them, Wells relates the manuals to international attempts to set limits on war practices. This book will be invaluable to those concerned with military law, here and abroad, to students of international law, and to military policy makers.

Moral Warriors
By L. Dabeck
Wells' work is a tour de force of military moral codes. He was compiled a topical study which tracks each moral code as developed throughout the history of US Army manual on Laws of Land Warfare, starting with General Order 100 from the civil war. Well organized and well written. A must have for any Army officer, especially lawyers and chaplains.

Filmography of Social Issues: A Reference Guide, by Charles P. Mitchell

Since the early days of silent film, some of the most memorable movies made have been those that have confronted and explored such challenging social issues as poverty or racism. Librarians and educators―as well as cultural historians, students and cinemaphiles― will find this book a valuable resource for examining films and how they reflect and comment on the major issues of our time. This specialized filmography first identifies and discusses twenty important social issues that have recurred in films over the years. In addition to the films critiqued here, other related titles are listed under each topic. The 100 films discussed in this volume, presented alphabetically in standard reference format, cover a wide spectrum of film perspectives and genres. Many of the films are American made, others are European, all are English language. Each film entry identifies the prominent social theme or themes and presents full credit information, including the major actors involved. The Overview section, which briefly describes why the film was selected, is followed by a concise plot synopsis. Finally the critique gives pertinent background information, commentary, analysis and evaluation.

This filmography should be valuable both as reference tool for library film study collections and for video collection development. Educators will find it useful for incorporating film into the language arts and social curriculum, particularly for teaching thematic units and integrated studies. The volume is well organized, the entries expertly written in clear yet lively language, and the critiques interesting and insightful.

Social Problems in Films--from Silents to the Present
By Dr. Ronald Schwartz
Charles P. Mitchell has written a very perceptive volume, commenting on over 100 films (organized alphabetically)and the social issues contained within them as framed by an extensive Introduction (also organized alphabetially) beginning with

"abortion" and ending with "women's rights."

Each film discussed identifies the social problem under consideration with an overview, synopsis and critique of each film. It is Mitchell's critical overview, acute perception and sense of humor where applicable that makes each entry in this volume a valuable and wonderful piece of film criticism. Especially good is Mitchell's critique of various film noirs and neo-noirs scattered throughout the volume, since he was a specialist in this area of criticism---although he has published widely on other themes such as film music, detective films (Charlie Chan), the horror film, science fiction and even the

literary roots of films based on the novels of H.P. Lovecraft.

There is also a huge index and truthfully, this is one of Mitchell's best film books. I would recommend it to fans of cinema as well as all library collections.

Dedication

It is unfortunate to note that FILMOGRAPHY OF SOCIAL ISSUES is Charles P. Mitchell's last critical volume. He passed away suddenly in Millinocket, Maine at age 55. Besides writing, Mr. Mitchell was a contributor to CLASSIC IMAGES and was a specialist on film noir (and neo-noir), often tracking down difficult-to-find VHS tapes in this arena, operating a mail-order business called DARKER IMAGES VIDEO in his hometown. He leaves his loving wife Roberta as caretaker of his estate who also intends to continue their video business in Millinocket.

Charlie's acute critical perceptions and sense of humor will always be missed personally and in his writings.

From Publishers Weekly
Swierczynski chronicles a long, frenzied and near-fatal night in Philadelphia in his fast-paced if far-fetched sophomore effort (after 2005's The Wheelman). The narrative cuts back and forth between journalist Jack Eisley, who's poisoned at a Philadelphia airport bar by the beautiful blonde of the title, Kelly White; and Mike Kowalski, a supersecret operative for a covert government agency, who must find a scientist who has gone into hiding—in order to kill him, and bring back his head—and take Kelly into custody as well. The common thread: a dangerous nanotechnology tracking device. Mike's handlers are interested, and Kelly is infected with the nanites that will automatically cause her to kill if she's left alone. Hence her decision to dose Jack and keep him shackled to her with the promise of an antidote. Rapid-fire pacing, hard-boiled dialogue and excellent local color make up for the unlikely twists and turns of this entertaining thriller. (Nov.)

From Booklist
Swierczynski's The Wheel Man (2005) was an adrenaline-charged thrill ride through the streets of Philadelphia, and this one is, too. But where Wheel Man offered an inventive take on a traditional crime scenario--the heist gone wrong--The Blonde serves up more high--concept fare. Jack Eisley, dreading a meeting with his wife's ball-busting divorce lawyer, meets an attractive blond who informs him that she just poisoned his drink. If he wants the antidote, she adds, he'd better stay close, because if she doesn't have someone within 10 feet of her at all times, she'll die. Unfortunately for Jack, she is not a psycho. She is infected with fast-replicating and highly infectious nanomachines--and followed by a government agent who already has one head in his duffel bag. Her predicament, which soon becomes Jack's--thanks to an injudicious kiss--requires entertaining, nonstop problem solving. If the premise sounds hard to swallow, it's worth taking the bait. This is another fast, funny, and action-packed outing from a writer who, fortunately for us, doesn't seem to know how to slow down. Keir Graff

Review

“Lean as a starving model, mean as a snake, and fast as a jet. This guy has got to be the hottest new thing in crime fiction, and THE BLONDE is one of the best crime reads I've had in some time.” ―Joe R. Lansdale, Edgar-winning author of SUNSET AND SAWDUST

“Duane Swierczynski's new novel, THE BLONDE, is as lean as a starving model, mean as a snake, and fast as a jet. It's also one hell of fine read. This guy has got to be the hottest new thing in crime fiction, and THE BLONDE is one of the best crime reads I've had in some time.” ―Joe R. Lansdale, bestselling author of THE BOTTOMS

“THE BLONDE is a shot of pure noir adrenaline for the 21st. Century. It left me battered, bruised, bleeding, dazed, confused, and downright goofy. And all I did was read it! Think how the poor characters must feel. Duane Swierczynski makes the Marquis de Sade look like a rank amateur when it comes to the business of torturing his characters and the readers who grow to care about them. He writes the way Sam Peckinpah used to direct: with a mad passion to awaken the slumbering masses and energize them with his enthusiasm for the material at hand. THE BLONDE rocks!” ―Terrill Lee Lankford, author of EARTHQUAKE WEATHER and BLONDE LIGHTNING

“Insanely inventive. This inspired high-concept thriller rockets from climax to climax with an intensity that will leave you breathless. It's like the movie 'Speed' -- only with brains.” ―Charles Ardai, editor of the Hard Case Crime series

“I got whiplash from turning these pages so fast. The cleverest, wittiest and most relentless novel I've read in a long, long time. A dazzling piece of work.” ―Ed Gorman

“A wild ride. Swierczynski knows how to make a book move and the pages fly―and he has a terrific ear for dialogue. The Blonde is wonderful, risky and very funny.” ―Sandra Scoppettone, award-winning author of THIS DAME FOR HIRE and TOO DARN HOT

Warning: Do Not Open This Book...
By Gary Griffiths
...unless you've no plans for the rest of the day.

Trust me - this is about as good as modern pulp crime fiction gets - a frantic, dark, and cynical half day romp through a Philadelphia night that combines the lean, no nonsense tough guy style of the classic masters of crime with a neat pop science fiction twist. This is the bizarre offspring of Raymond Chandler, were he writing for the iPod generation, and Michael Crichton, without the tedious baggage of scientific supporting detail.

Jack Eisley is a Chicago newsman, traveling to Philly to meet his wife's divorce lawyer. Meeting beautiful blonde Kelly Whyte on the flight, Jack succumbs to a drink in the airport bar. And from the "I poisoned your drink" opening line to a satisfyingly twisted climax 226 pages later that will come too soon, this is a rock-`em, sock-`em, in-your-face thriller that will keep you as close to this book as Kelly, you'll learn, needs to keep Jack. Rising above the crowd in this solid cast is Mike Kowalski, an ultra-secret government operative and part time vigilante who, in his spare time, is assassinating the Philadelphia mob, goomba-by-goomba, to settle an old score. Kowalski is a memorable thug, an indestructible, larger than life lethal weapon of a man who'd be comfortable knocking around with Bennie and the biker in Sam Peckinpah's "Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia." And though Swiercynski is not one to allow plot complexities to slow down the not stop mayhem, the players and pieces do eventually come together in a conclusion that if macabre, is satisfying.

Duane Swierczynski is the real deal - a writer who clearly enjoys his craft and practices it with hip, clean prose that is meant to shock and entertain. I thoroughly enjoyed last year's "The Wheelman"; "The Blonde" obliterates any risk of sophomore jinx. Do yourself a favor - get to know Swierczynski and his rocking tales of Philadelphia noir.

A White-Hot Bullet Right Between The Eyes
By Mel Odom
Duane Swierczynski has, with the publication of THE BLONDE become one of the new next-gen crime writers I'm watching. He's an editor-in-chief of a major Philadelphia newspaper, so his lean, muscular prose come to him naturally from a daily grind. The imagination is purely his, but it's a new twist on a lot of the old noir-style books and movies that I love so much.

I never know what to expect from his characters. In The Blonde I wasn't even sure who the good guys were until the final pages of the book were sorted out. It was a great ride, and I couldn't stop turning pages once I'd started. I'd read the warnings on the book posted by other writers and reviews, but they really meant it.

His previous release from a mainstream publisher came in 2005. THE WHEELMAN was a blistering read that kept you glued to the story in a merciless grip. See, Swiercynski has this take-no-prisoners mentality that just grabs the reader by the throat on page one, introduces a problem the protagonist has to handle just to survive, then turns the tables on him (and the reader!) before another 15 or 20 pages have gone by.

Reading the twists and turns of his plots is like constantly getting surprised by an opposing boxer's hooks and jabs slipping right through your defenses. No matter how ready you think you are, you keep getting smashed and broken up, and get left wondering how it's all going to shake out.

THE BLONDE has one of the best opening sequences I've seen in a long time. A woman in the Philly airport tells Jack Eisley, the main character, that she's poisoned his drink and he's going to be dead in eight hours. He blows her off, thinking she's just weird. And the reader watches as Jack gives her the slip and walks away. Normally there would be something that would prevent him from doing that.

Not in Swierrcynski's world. He finds a reason to make the protagonist give in and go back to the airport hoping to find the woman, Kelly White. Jack's nausea and vomiting convinces him he has been poisoned, so he returns for the antidote. Only the woman fesses up to him and tells him she actually needs him because she's infested with nanobots that will kill her if she's left alone.

Okay, we've suddenly entered the Twilight Zone as our crime thriller goes into Michael Crichton overdrive.

Then we pick up the next main character. His name is Kowalski. He's an operative for a super-secret government organization. A close reader will remember him from THE WHEELMAN, and I thought it was great that Swierczynski rewards his fans like that. The author's building quite a little violent family out in Philly. But he's not afraid to kill them off, either.

Kowalski has been killing Mafia guys off the clock on his own time as revenge for the death of his girlfriend and their child. That plotline goes back to the previous novel, but it isn't necessary to have read it first. It does add to things, though.

Now Kowalski's been given a new assignment: Find a professor and bring back his head. Kowalski never even flinches at the prospect. It's all business to him. But his business goes south in a hurry as events go awry.

Swierczynski's characters are all interesting people, but I wouldn't want to meet any of them. None of them care for much outside their own skins. But, man, they are an absolute blast to read about.

THE BLOND is a white-hot bullet of a story that hits the reader right between the eyes. Taking place in less than nine hours, the story will leave you breathless with anxiety and brimming with anticipation of what's going to happen next. It's a race to the finish as Swierczynski wheels this high-octane, V-8 thriller for the checkered flag.

Sit Down, Strap In, and Shut Up.....
By Don In Fremont
You are gonna need sweat bands to read this book!

The Blonde swirls with violence, humor, politics and just plain craziness. Duane Swerve, uh, Swycz, oh hell, let's just call him Duane S., shall we? OK, so it's Swierczynski. I don't want to make him angry, after all, god knows he's capable of some serious revenge. Anyway, he has created an instant classic, a book that SCREAMS (literally and loudly) for Tarentino, Rodriguez, or even Frank Miller to adapt and film.

Swierczynski, at the book's outset, drops us square in the middle of a personal hell belonging to one Jack Eisley, a soon-to-be-divorced journalist from Chicago. You see, poor Jack, who also appears in Swierczynski's previous novel, The Wheelman, had the misfortune to be targeted by a particularly industrious blonde, currently named Kelly White, and she informs him, out of the blue, 1) she's poisoned his drink with a "luminous toxin"; 2) he has but hours to live; 3) he must accompany her for the foreseeable future in order to receive the antidote. If this reminds you of a certain classic noir film...good...you are in the right place.

Because then, Kelly takes Jack on a little tour of his hell, complete with nightmarish blood-borne surveillance devices and scenarios best described as Jim Thompson with a shot of Phil Dick.

If that's not enough (and believe me when I say it isn't), Swierczynski is also developing another narrative, that of Mike Kowalski, sniper/assassin/comedian of unknown affiliation. He might work for Homeland Security, or any other nameless and scary group of law-takers. Doesn't really matter, because, with all his demons, he is immensely likeable. Part of Swierczynski's genius is that he has made Kowalski the hero of the book. Somehow. And if you think this is all just crazy-mad style, get over yourself. He's crafted a serious story around all the outsized action, with an ending as satisfying as they come.

OK, so we have hot girls, self-replicating killer-spy nanomachines, journo-suckers, affable hit-men, double-secret government cadres; are we forgetting anything? OH YEAH, a severed head in a duffle bag!!

Whew!

So whip out the card, mortgage the farm, do what you gotta to, just GET THE BLONDE!! It overflows with noir-y goodness.....

From Booklist
Written for the upper-elementary through middle-school environment, Science in Everyday Life in America is a chronological approach to science and history in America from precontact to the present time. Each volume includes an introduction, a short bibliography with Web sites, and a volume index. There is no table of contents to guide the reader. Inventions and technologies, an average of 24 in each volume, are alphabetically arranged. Entries are between three and seven pages long and include background, related inventions and technologies of the period covered, and further refinements that have occurred after the indicated period. The information is well written for the intended audience. The lightning rod, refrigeration, the bicycle, mass production, and the personal computer are some of the topics covered. Captioned black-and-white photographs enhance the text.

In an attempt to make the reading accessible for the younger reader, phonetic spelling follows many terms. This may be useful for scientific, technical, and geographic terms like tectonics (tek-TAHN-iks), genome (JEEN-ohm), and Massachusetts (mass-uh-CHOO-setz), but it is distracting for words like especially (es-PESH-ul-ee) and experience (ex-PEER-ee-ense). Each mention of scientist (SYE-en-tist) in every volume is handled in the same manner.

Because of the lack of a comprehensive index or a table of contents for the individual volumes, the use of the set is limited unless one knows when something was invented or locates the information in another source first. For those with an interest in science or history, this set would be interesting general reading. For research, it is recommended with reservations for school and public libraries. RBB

Securing American Independence: John Jay and the French Alliance (Contributions to the Study of World History), by Frank W. Brecher

Brecher explores the controversial diplomacy by which the United States separately brought to a de facto close its War of Independence against the British, leaving its one ally, France, in the lurch. He focuses on the two dominant, ostensibly allied peace negotiators, John Jay and Vergennes.

Veteran diplomat and diplomatic history author Frank Brecher follows the chronology of the American War of Independence, alternating between accounts of the conflict as experienced diplomatically and, in less detail, militarily by the Americans and the French, respectively. In doing so, after summarizing in his preface a highly informed and articulate contemporary analysis of the origins of the Revolution from the perspective of the more conservative elements of the American leadership, of whom John Jay was very much a part, Brecher focuses on the particular experiences of Jay and Vergennes, both in their personal lives and in their politial careers. He describes and compares their respective―and quite different―preparations for their historical activities as peace negotiators, and describes the major developments of the conflict itself as they themselves participated in, and analyzed, them.

While Vergennes, the French Foreign Minister, for the first time in his career, remained physically stationary in Versailles, Jay, for the first time in his life as well as career, left the New York region to live in Philadelphia, then Madrid, and finally Paris, before returning as Secretary for Foreign Affairs in 1784, after four and a half eventful and personally dramatic years abroad. The lessons each of these two diplomats learned as a result of the crucible through which they had to pass before their very personal―and historically important―encounter in France toward war's end very much affected the negotiating strategies they adopted and the ultimatley paradoxical mixture of both triumph and disappoinment with which they helped bring to a succesful conclusion the military phase of an alliance embarked upon by their two nations some five long years earlier. Brecher presents a provocative view of early American diplomacy that will be of interest to scholars and students alike.

The Origin of Mankind
By JEFFREY E FULLNER
This is an excellent book, but should be read after you read "Edgar Cayce on Atlantis". There is some redundancy but this book contains additional information and insight into the readings of Edgar Cayce, including an Afterward section that gives you a summary of recent archeological findings that support the readings of Edgar Cayce.
In this book, you will find an attempt to categorize this history of early ancient civilizations into three categories related to the partial or complete destruction of ancient civilization dating from 50,000 b.c., 30,000 b.c., and 10,500 b.c. According this book, we are living in the fourth time period dating from around 10,500 b.c. to the present. Explanations of the various types of people (and/or beings) are given. The "Dead Sea Scrolls" and even the "Bible" also support these descriptions to some degree.
If you are a hard-core evolutionist or creationist, this book will provide some support for both but you will quickly realize that a lot of what is taught in school, is not necessarily supported by recent archeological findings. You will also discover that we are all on a spiritual journey, possibly of our own choosing. The most interesting dilemma in the research in Egypt is that there seems to be an overwhelming amount of evidence that a "Hall of Records" that contains information about the architects of the Egyptian Pyramids, is buried under the Sphinx or nearby in a Pyramid "of it's own".
Why don't we go over there and dig up the records? Cayce's claim is that these things cannot happen until the right time or until we are ready for the "next evolution of mankind." If in fact these records exist, we would have to re-write history and it would probably have a radical affect on our society, both scientifically and spiritually. This book also paints a picture of our own future that is bleak (although I found this particular chapter to be a little speculative for my tastes.) The Afterward is good but you will want to read other books that support these writings since they are vague and only summarized.
Lastly, I have begun to really doubt the accuracy of Carbon-14 dating, not just from this book but from other archeological books I've read that draw conclusions based solely on dating research. The tests used to date the Pyramids, place the dates of the Pyramids 200 years before Kafu, the assumed builder of the Pyramids. Unfortunately, it also doesn't support the dates provided by Cayce either. The Carbon-14 dates really don't make much sense, especially if you consider that there are watermarks around the neck of the Sphinx, which can only be traced to the period between 8000 and 5000 b.c. The fact is, we still have a great deal to learn about the Pyramids and that the most incredible archeological finds, are still to be had right in Giza. Hopefully there is more to come.

The authors trace the legend of Atlants from Plato, who first wrote about it in Timaeus and Critias in the 5th century BC, through the ages to the present, discussing authors who: 1. Believed Plato and amassed data to substantiate his story 2. Thought there might be some truth in the tale but couldn't accept Plato's 9000 BC date and South Atlantic location and tried to rationalize the story by changing both the time and place. 3. Critics who believed Plato's story was just a myth and collected arguments to reflect their point of view. 4.The description of Atlantis provided by a study of 700(which mention Atlantis) of the 2500 Cayce "life readings".
For those not familiar with Edgar Cayce and his work, there is a foreword by Edgar Evans Cayce (his son) which tells what Cayce did and gives examples of both a "physical reading" and a "life reading", to give the reader a feeling for the credibility of Cayce's work.
The book compares archeol! ogical and geological facts with Cayce's statements about the past. New discoveries continue to show that many things Cayce said years ago, considered ridiculous by archeologists and geologists then, have since become accepted. Radio carbon dating has shown that man was in the places Cayce said he was at the times Cayce said he was. Originally published in 1988 by Harper/Collins, "MYSTERIES OF ATLANTIS REVISITED" was reprinted and up dated by St Martins Press in 1997. A new chapter describes the most recent discoveries between 1988 and 1997. Several exciting ones continue to validate Cayce's view of the past. Examples are: a. The discovery of an, up to now, unknown and unexplored chamber in the Great Pyramid b. Evidence for an older gae of the sphinx c. New discoveries off Bimini d. A study in 1987 of ther major fault zones in the eastern U.S. by the American Association of Engineering Societies, and their conclusions about the likelihood of of future earthquaks , co! incides closely with statements made by Cayce years ago ( m! aps of these fault zones published with permission of the AAES )
Comprehensive and well written, "MYSTERIES OF ATLANTIS REVISITED", is intersting and exciting reading for both amateurs and professionals. The book is available in German, French, Italian, Spanish and Japanese as well as English.

Good no nonsense overview of Atlantis
By Kindle Customer
Easy to read 200 page book that gives an overview of the Cayce readings about Atlantis. Considering how much garbage has been written about Atlantis just to sell books, this is an excellent place to start. Strength of the book is the author's attempt to present the Cayce readings objectively with comparisons to scientific thinking and that of other metaphysical writers on the topic, such as the Theosophists. The weakness is that some of the science is outdated, and it is presented incompletely.
There are compelling scientific arguments against a mid-ocean continent 50,000 years ago containing an advanced technological civilization. This makes Cayce more difficult to believe than is acknowledged here. But there are real reasons to take Cayce seriously, both metaphsical and scientific. One of Cayce's claims to fame is his statements that the Sphinx and the largest pyramid at Giza are much older than archeologists believe, and that there is now---some 70 years later--geologic and astronomical evidence to support these claims for an age of 12,400 years (though these claims are vociferously denied by Egyptologists).
An excellent book as a follow up to this one, exploring this geologic and astronomical (as well as common sense) evidence that support Cayce's claims for a vast age for some Egyptian monuments is "The Message of the Sphinx" by Hancock and Bauval. THAT book, about the ancient Egyptians, which gives Cayce credibility, is five stars.

From Booklist
This second entry in the Sherlock Files, which has Xander and Xena Holmes in possession of their ancestor Sherlock’s cold-case files, riffs a bit on The Hound of the Baskervilles, though maybe less than one would think. The brother and sister find themselves in the country village of Blackslope, where 100 years ago Sherlock failed to get to the bottom of the rumors surrounding a monstrous beast in the woods, a creature that seems to have reappeared. A few mild thrills, solid detective work, and a zippy pace make this a nice choice, and it may just lead kids to Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock. Grades 4-6. --Ian Chipman

A Very Good Detective Story
By Esther LINDSEY
I am 11-years old. I think this book is good for anyone who likes adventure or mysteries. If you would choose a book, I would choose this one. This is about two kids who are related to Sherlock Holmes and their names are Xander and Xena and in this book they try to uncover why everybody in the town won't go out at night. It kept me in suspense until the very end. Anyone my age who loves books and mysteries, will love this series. - Rebekah L. age, 11

Passion, Politics, and Philosophie: Rediscovering J.-P. Brissot (Contributions to the Study of World History), by Leonore Loft

Jacques-Pierre Brissot was among the major architects of the French Revolution, yet history has vilified and then dismissed him. His early intellectual development was strongly influenced by Enlightenment ideas and aspirations. However, his own remarkable construct of a just, democratic society, universal suffrage, and a renewed humanity living in moral and political freedom foreshadowed many present-day ideologies. The prevailing view of Brissot has pigeonholed him as Brissot, the police spy, a label difficult to remove.

Although this contention has been disputed at some length, Loft presents an alternative view of the forces that shaped Brissot's social and political activism. Tracing the gradual evolution of his ideology from its earliest stages reveals that he did not suddenly become a radical in the mid-1780s. An open, objective, and thorough evaluation of Brissot's work uncovers the roots of his lifelong commitment to reformist, egalitarian, and democratic ideals. To understand Brissot, the man and his work, one must assess the cultural, intellectual, and political influences that surrounded him. Loft offers the necessary fusion of text and context, providing a serious reconsideration of Brissot and his contributions to the history of human rights. Scholars and other researchers of the French Revolution and European political thought will find this study of particular value.

"This is a superbly documented study of Brissot by a scholar thoroughly familiar not only with her subject's work, but also with the cultural and political climate on the French Revolution. It fully explores Brissot's manifold activities before and during the revolution as journalist, polemicist, reformist and anti-slavery activist, and it offers a compelling and convincing portrait of an idealistic man who fell victim to the unforgiving revolutionary politics."-Gita May Professor of French Columbia University

"Jacques-Pierre Brissot was one of the most important spokesmen for the French Revolutionary movement, and an important advocate of the abolition of slavery and the emancipation of the Jews. Leonore Loft's study is the first comprehensive examination of his extensive pre-revolutionary writings. It should do much to rehabilitate the reputation of a man who was unfairly vilified by his contemporaries and who has continued to be negelected by historians."-Jeremy D. Popkin Professor of History University of Kentucky

"Professor Loft's analysis is a significant contribution to the history of ideas from several points of view. The breadth of this study, which takes in such topics as the theory of criminal law, pamphlet journalism, the prostitution debate, the vast literature of the anti-slavery movement, will make it highly useful to the generalist as well as the specialist. This is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the climate of opinion in France, and further afield, in the period leading up to and into the Revolution. The revaluation of the radical humanitarian Brissot is argued as vividly and cogently as anything written by the polemicist himself. And feminist scholars will not want to miss the discussion of Brissot's relationship with Felicite Dupont, or his views on the status of women."-Judith Curtis University of Toronto at Scarborough

"In this careful study of Brissot the philosophe and journalist, before he became Brissot the revolutionary, Leonore Loft locates his work within the context of the Ancient Regime and the Enlightment. She explores the variety of religious, political, and social issues that captures his attention and illustrates the variety of sources and forces that influenced his thinking: the Bible, the classics, the young United States, the Atlantic slave trade, the vogue of science, the example of Rousseau. In doing so she not only fleshed out the figure of this remarkable individual but also addresses larger historical issues of interest to readers in many disciplines: the inevitable tension between principles and practice, the perennial question of change and continuity, and the problematic relations between democracy and diversity."-Jeffrey Merrick Professor of History University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee

About the Author
