From Booklist
Porter's latest work continues the format and tone of his other volumes in Greenwood's series of biographical dictionaries of sports. As with the others in the series, the entries are arranged alphabetically, contain no illustrations, and include brief bibliographies.

The entries treat 577 individuals, among them almost all of the nearly 300 who are enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame. Fourteen foreign-born inductees are omitted--this is especially odd, given the current internationalization of basketball. Players, coaches, executives, and journalists are covered. It is good to see many female personalities from the college and professional ranks included. The treatment is factual and does little to bring out the life and personality of basketball. Special attention is appropriately paid to awards, performances in all-star games, play-offs, and championship series at various levels.

The front matter includes a list of alphabetical entries and a list of abbreviations used within the text. The main body of the text is followed by three appendixes. First is a list of entries by place of birth (mostly within the U.S.). The second appendix is a list of women who have entries in the encyclopedia. A list of all those enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame makes up the final appendix. The very comprehensive index is not as helpful as it could be. Some index entries, notably those for the NCAA, NCAA men's All-America Team, and the NBA, are so long as to be useless, since they point to nearly every entry in the text.

Much of the information presented in this book is easily available on the Internet. The Basketball Hall of Fame is a great resource for the inductees [http://www.hoophall.com]. The volume would be of use mainly in libraries with comprehensive basketball collections and those that serve novice basketball readers. If your library needs a book about basketball with a biographical bent, pick up a copy of Peter C. Bjarkman's The Biographical History of Basketball (McGraw-Hill, 1999) instead. Jeff Kosokoff

Review
"This reference resource is an A-to-Z listing of players and coaches--male and female, college and professional--who have had a significant impact on the game of basketball. The 577 entries are generally page-long biographical sketches offering the subject's full name, nicknames, date and place of birth and death, family information (parents, children, spouses), and career development. An individual's impact on the game is determined by outstanding statistical records, extraordinary achievement in championships and tournaments, and awards garnered….[t]his is a good source for brief yet detailed biographical information on notable figures in basketball, past and present. Recommended. Lower-level undergraduates and general readers." - Choice

Sadie hates this strange new place, where even children must work at the cannery to help make ends meet and people are rude to her disabled father.

Yet when trouble comes, it is the kindness of these new neighbors that helps the family make it through. And no one helps more than Dollie, a red-headed chatterbox of a girl who just might become a good friend-if Sadie gives her half a chance.

Review

“[A] deeply affecting story . . . Hale's evocative, sure prose . . . brings alive the setting and the family's survival challenges with cinematic detail that's reminiscent of the Little House books.” ―Booklist, starred review

“What could have been just another surviving-the-Depression story is, instead a beautifully realized work, memorable for its Gulf Coast setting and the luminous voice of Sadie Wynn. An important addition to the genre from a new voice.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“Hale has created a character with a strong, lyrical voice. She describes the coastal area so vividly that Sparrows is a breath of fresh air even when it brings tears to your eyes.” ―USA Today

“[T]riumphant and memorable, as is her entire family--who not only endure the Depression but emerge stronger from it.” ―The Horn Book

CHAPTER FOUR

Daddy drove down a dirt road between the rows of cotton and stopped in a clearing near the wagons. He talked to the boss while we waited in the car with Mama. The man had a fierce look of doubt on his face, but he soon shrugged and pointed to some buildings at the far edge of the fields. They looked like apple crates hunkered under the hot sun.

The man handed a folded stack of bags to Daddy and stood back to watch. Daddy looped the straps of each bag over his shoulder, pulled them behind him to the car, and pitched them in to Mama. Then he hauled himself onto the front seat. The man’s eyebrows lifted. He shook his head and turned back to his work.

“We’ll start after the noon meal,“ Daddy said. He pointed to the apple crate buildings. “We’re to stay out there.”

Mama nodded.

We headed down the dirt road, but the closer we got to those little houses, the harder Mama’s face looked. A dozen one-room cabins sat spittin’ close. The board siding gaped, leaving little chance of privacy, and the only cabin empty leaned on its blocks like it was tuckered out. She stepped in, glanced around at the mounds of blown-in dirt and weeds, and stepped out. “We’ll stay in the tent,“ she said.

Mama picked a place off to one side near a scrub oak, and we hurried to set up camp. Out in the fields, workers dropped their cotton bags. Some pulled towel-wrapped meals from their overalls and ate where they were, leaning against half-filled sacks. Others walked back to the cabins. By the time they trickled in, Daddy had fired up the coal oil stove and Mama had pancake batter sizzling in a hot skillet. We wouldn’t have time for pan bread today. She flipped the cakes out, sprinkled them with a bit of sugar, and rolled them up. The sugared pancakes tasted good, but they did little to sweeten my sour thoughts.

I ate under the tree and watched men gather in the sliver of shade cast by the cabins. They sat in the dirt and leaned against the warped siding while women and kids disappeared through open doorways to fetch their meals. Seems all of them stole curious glances at us. I wondered if my growing vexation showed on my face, but I should’ve known it was Daddy they were looking at. A few men nodded our way, and Daddy nodded back.

When we finished eating, Mama wrapped each one of our fingers with narrow strips of rags so the prickly cotton bolls wouldn’t tear up our hands. Except for Bobby. He got a spoon and a wooden bowl for digging in the dirt. Mama handed Jacob his hat and told us girls to put on our bonnets. “Stay close to Daddy,“ she said. “He’ll show us how it’s done.”

Jacob and Emily followed Daddy into the field with their long bags, but I dug my toes into the hot dirt and waited for Mama. She tied her bonnet with bandaged fingers and pulled Bobby toward the field. I should’ve kept my mouth shut, but I knew I’d bust like an overripe melon if I didn’t say something. I fell into step, drew a deep breath, and spit it out. “Did Daddy lie to us, Mama?”

She stopped and frowned hard at me. The look made my gut tighten up, but I was determined. I jerked my slipping bag back over my shoulder. “He promised we’d live on the coast and fish, Mama, and here we are in a cotton field.”

She shook her head and gave me a look that made me feel small and mean. “Your Daddy’s a smart man, Sadie. He’s here for more than just pay.”

Mama pulled Bobby into the field and left me standing in the dirt. I hadn’t thought it was possible to feel worse, but I did.

I don’t remember much about those five days except for the hot, achy work and wondering what Daddy was here for if it wasn’t the money. At dusk, everyone came in from the fields too tired for socializing, so I knew Daddy wasn’t here for that. But like Mama said, I could tell he wanted more. Every evening he sat outside the tent like he was waiting for something. It wasn’t till the last night that I understood what it was.

While me and Mama washed up supper dishes, a few workers drifted our way. Daddy shook their hands and introduced himself. “My name’s John Wynn,“ he said. He nodded at Mama. “And my wife here is Raine.”

Mama smiled her hello. Her name was really Lorraine, but Daddy liked Raine better. One day I asked him why and he said there was nothing in this world sweeter than rain, and Mama wasn’t much different.

The men talked with Daddy a while, then more came with wives and kids. Mama made coffee, and me and Emily played hopscotch by lamplight with a green-eyed girl named Dollie Mae Gillem. She was thin and wiry with freckles and short curly red hair, the only girl in a family of six boys, and nothing at all like Wilma. Her steady stream of chatter left me wondering if she’d pass out from lack of air.

She told me about all she had to put up with, being the only girl in the family, and pointed out three of her brothers huddled around a game of marbles. “There’s Davis-he’s thirteen and the oldest-and that’s Oren and Wyatt next to him,“ she said.

I saw Jacob smack in the middle of them, hunched over a circle drawn in the sand.

“Mama’s holding baby Caleb,“ she said, “and over there, that’s Ethan and Tanner.” She pointed out the last two Gillems playing tag with Bobby and a few others. They chased around the tent, hollering and laughing so hard their mamas had to put their cups aside to settle them down.

Daddy sat on the ground, his crippled legs folded sideways, out of the way. He talked to those men like he wasn’t any different at all. And soon they talked back like they didn’t see his crippled legs anymore. Always quick, he caught me looking and smiled. Daddy had a handsome smile, and I felt it swell inside me like a clean breath.

For a while, the grown-up talk took on a festive mood. Seems we were all glad to be done with the cotton and looked forward to collecting our pay first thing in the morning. I hoped Daddy would bring out his fiddle, but he must’ve had more important things on his mind. I caught snatches of talk about the Depression, about looking for work and the worry of feeding hungry kids. A woman, her dress hanging slack over her whisper-thin body, cheeks shining wet, listened at lamp’s edge. She clutched a rag doll to her chest like a baby, and I had to wonder at the kind of misfortune that put such a sorrowful look on her face. Even with all we gave up, I guessed we might’ve been luckier than some.

Before long, Emily tired of playing hopscotch and wandered off. Dollie balanced on one foot, watching her go, then threw down her rock. She grabbed a spare cotton bag and pulled me away from the light.

“Finally,“ she said. “Now we can be alone. Would you like to sit down and talk? You have a real sweet sister, Sadie, and Lord knows I’d love to have one just like her instead of all those brothers, but I’ve been dying to get you all to myself. She’s only five, after all, and it’s hard to speak your mind with a little one around.”

Dollie spread the bag, sat on one end, and looked up at me. “Come on,“ she said. “Don’t you want to get to know each other?” Not waiting for an answer, she patted the space beside her and kept talking while I sat down.

“I’ve never seen anyone with hair dark as yours paired up with blue eyes and white skin,“ she said. “Papa would say you’re a beauty, that’s for sure.” She smoothed her wild curls with her hand, but they popped right back up. “I’d trade you if I could, but I guess I’m gonna be stuck with this red mop the rest of my days.”

I fingered one of my thick pigtails and stared at her. I couldn’t remember anyone describing me as a beauty before. I felt my cheeks color up, but Dollie didn’t notice. She kept on talking, telling me about how she’d come from Ohio two years ago, and how out of all the places they’d tried to settle along the way, she liked South Texas best. She talked about what it was like living by the bay, and how much she missed having a friend her age in the neighborhood. Clumps of red hair bobbed as she spoke, and though she asked dozens of questions, she never waited for answers. She prattled on and on about the things we could do together if only I lived close by.

I didn’t say much. Even if I’d wanted to squeeze in a word or two, it seemed a waste of time, seeing as how our families would scatter different directions in the morning. Besides, I already had a best friend, and I had no intention of breaking my promise to Wilma.

While Dollie rambled on, I wondered what Wilma would think. I smiled, already hearing that hiccuping guffaw of hers. She’d laugh for sure-but more at me than at Dollie, for letting myself get cornered and corralled.

I couldn’t do much about Dollie’s endless chatter, any more than I could’ve stopped Daddy from moving. But after a while, I figured I could do something about my listening.

I stood up right in the middle of a story about a girl named Lou Ann Waller, who wanted to get away from the smell of fish and shrimp so bad she threatened to run off with her boyfriend. “I’d better get back,“ I said. “Mama doesn’t know where I am.”

Dollie looked up, surprised, but it didn’t seem to bother her none. She gathered up the cotton bag and followed me to the tent.

When we got back, everyone was shaking Daddy’s hand and wishing us well. All but the Gillems. They stayed a bit lon...

Amazon.com Review
In Search the Dark, the third entry in Charles Todd's remarkable series, the walking-wounded survivors of World War I crowd the English landscape. Scotland Yard's Inspector Rutledge is one of many who suffer from shell shock. He constantly hears--and responds to--the voice of Hamish, a Scottish soldier he shot for cowardice. His latest case does not help his fragile state of mind as it involves another weary and discouraged veteran, Bert Mowbray.

On his way to Lyme Regis to search for work, Bert looks out of the train window in a town called Singleton Magna, and sees an unbelievable sight--his wife and two children who he thought were killed in a London bombing raid. He leaps off the train and tries to find his family, racing desperately across fields and country roads, and finally winding up asleep under a tree. Meanwhile, the battered body of a woman is found on the edge of a cornfield, and Mowbray is arrested. Is the woman his wife? Did he kill her? And what happened to the two children who were with her?

Everywhere Rutledge looks, he shows us various forms of damage caused by the war--from the hopes of a local girl whose lover returned with a French wife, to the trauma that Mowbray is going through. As in the first two books, A Test of Wills and Wings of Fire, Todd demonstrates the massive damage done to an entire country by focusing on the small, personal battles of the survivors. --Dick Adler

From Publishers Weekly
The third compelling Ian Rutledge mystery (Wings of Fire; A Test of Wills) takes the sensitive and appealing Scotland Yard inspector, a former WWI officer, to the countryside of Dorset. In 1919, another former soldier is arrested for murder in the town of Singleton Magna after the battered corpse of a young woman is found nearby. Withdrawn and suicidal, the suspect will speak to no one, and the police call Scotland Yard for help in finding the two young children who may have been in the dead woman's charge. Rutledge arrives, still carrying in his head the voice of Hamish MacLeod, a Scottish deserter whom he executed during the war and whose harsh, conscience-like presence in the inspector's mind seems to soften as the novel progresses, adding dimension to Todd's literary device. In his investigation, Rutledge encounters others whose spirits were ravaged in the war: Simon Wyatt, scion of local gentry, who has abandoned his plans to serve in Parliament; his French wife, unaccepted by the townspeople; Wyatt's former fianc?e, who may not have given up her previous expectations; a young local man whose head wound has left him mentally diminished; and an independent young woman from London. The discovery of a second woman's battered corpse further knots Rutledge's task, which is rooted, it evolves in this fine period mystery, as much in love as in war. Author tour.

Very gut wrenching
By Erudite
I'm a newcomer to the Ian Rutledge crime/mystery series by Charles Todd & am reading them in publication order. Each one has held my interest, are well paced & intriguing. Inspector Rutledge is an intelligent, sensitive man whose soul has been damaged by his time serving in the British Army during the horrors of WWI in France. His experience & "shell shock" has left him with the constant companionship & voice of the deceased Scottish Corporal Hamish MacLeod. These stories are very deep & should leave every reader with a closer understanding of the reality of not only WWI but war in general. My own grandfather served in WWI in France & was gassed during that time. He survived the War but it damaged his health & shortened his life. My only criticism, which is minor, is that so many of these police procedural authors have created protagonists who have some type of issue or personality disorder coupled with evil superiors who are always degrading them & tripping them up. Inspector Rutledge is constantly taking abuse from his Superintendent or the local constables. He gets no respect even though he is excellent at his job. I hope this does not continue because it really becomes annoying after a while. Ian Rutledge is a great character, the mysteries are well thought out & interesting & Charles Todd is a great writer who gives you much to think about.

Beautiful, moving writing
By Nico Brusso
Inspector Ian Rutledge of Scotland Yard is tall, intelligent, well-bred, Oxford-educated, and as handsome as they come. All reasons enough for his jealous boss to get him out of headquarters, assign him chancy cases in the hinterlands, and if Rutledge fails, so much the better.

Before the Great War, Rutledge had been successful at the Yard. Five years of service as an Army officer in the muddy, stinking trenches in France, his wounds, and especially his mental trauma have left him questioning his own ability, wondering whether he still has the old skills, whether he can actually keep up with the challenges of returning to the job. He looks thin, haggard, and tired.

Shell shock has left Rutledge with the ineradicable presence in his mind of the voice of one Hamish MacLeod, a noncommissioned officer he had to have executed by firing squad for refusing to follow orders to suicidally advance the men into withering enemy fire. Hamish counterpoints everything Rutledge says, does, or thinks.

While the war killed hundreds of thousands of British soldiers and civilians, the survivors were profoundly changed, including most of the characters in "Search the Dark" by Charles Todd.

Rutledge is dispatched to Singleton Magna, a small town in rural Dorset county, southwest of London, where the victim's body was found. Bert Mowbray was arrested for the crime. Though Mowbray's wife and two children had been killed years before in a bombing in London, he insisted he had just seen them with another man getting off the train. Now the wife is dead, the children and her new man are missing, and Mowbray is in jail for murder. Rutledge must clear up the confusion, identify the victim, and find the children.

Rutledge's investigation takes him to several nearby towns, where other young women are missing, and there is no shortage of suspects. Charles Todd's characters and their relationships are fully formed. You'll be puzzled and intrigued to the end.

Did not win me over
By Ed HikerTraveler
Was searching for a new mystery series and tried Charles Todd. Must admit, I was not crazy about Inspector Rutledge and his back story and ever present "voice in his head". The vehicle is overused and could just as easily have been eliminated. Mystery as a whole moved a bit slowly for me and I did not get caught up in the players. Might try one more in the series, but will not go out of my way.

great for toddlers
By AnnePlus2
This is a wonderful VERY FIRST activity book for toddlers. The activities are VERY simple, offering essential success when first starting activity books. There is a little basic learning, but it primarily fun and focused on completion of tasks. It is very good quality, thick paper, so no tearing from aggressive little hands. I got this for my second son when he was 22 months old, as he wanted a book to do while my older son (who was 3 1/2 at the time) was working on a workbook. Now, at 2 years and 3 months, he has finished the book. In my opinion, this is far too easy for a preschooler. I think the perfect age for it is during the year your child is 2. Other good activity books for 2 year olds are the Usborne first Sticker book series and the Kumon First Steps workbooks for 2+ ages.

Great For My Three Year Old
By Syds.Kid
My three year old loves this. I actually cut the binding off the book so I can give her individual pages to work on one at a time. There's no way she would just look through all those stickers and pick the correct ones out (without picking out and sticking lots of others first). So we do the activities together. The stickers aren't really reusable, per se, but they unstick good enough to restick once or twice more. She likes that. She is learning about colors and how to circle objects right now, although the matching pages are beyond her abilities at the moment, so I change that activity a little to suit her. I had thought that the fact that the pages have a lot of color on them already that she wouldn't like to color on them....but just the opposite has proven true. She likes these pages better than standard coloring books. The pages are sturdy and stiff so that even markers are fine on both sides of the paper without bleeding through. Really my only two negatives are 1) I wish that the pages were perforated for easy removal and 2) there were two pages I ended up throwing away because one was a witch (the child is supposed to draw a hat on her head) and a haunted house with ghost stickers and eyeballs and stuff. She's three. She doesn't understand that stuff and I will protect her little heart and mind from that garbage until she is old enough to grasp those concepts. I don't like that stuff, but like I said, it was easily fixed by me just throwing those pages away. Highly recommended and when she's worked her way through all the pages I will be hoping and looking for more books like this from this company.

GREAT book!
By Amazon Customer
I bought this to keep my son occupied while we were on safari and it worked perfect! He loved it! Pages to color, places to put stickers, small activities... it was great! He finished the whole book! Don't forget to bring a set of crayons along (you need each color of the rainbow). Highly recommend.

Common Law in Southern Africa: Conflict of Laws and Torts Precedents (Contributions in Legal Studies), by Peter Kutner

Previous works on Southern African law have been directed primarily to lawyers and students of law within Southern Africa; this is the first major text on the topic written for use in common law countries. The book identifies and describes judgments in Southern Africa courts that are significant for their treatment of conflicts and tort issues and can serve as authorities or models in common law jurisdictions. The most important legislative reforms in related subjects are also described. The text provides lawyers in common law countries access to the Southern African cases and statutes most pertinent to questions of conflict of laws and torts that arise in common law jurisdiction.

The judgments surveyed span the years 1947 to the present. Most are from South Africa and Zimbabwe (before and after independence), Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland, and South West Africa/Namibia; the South African national states are also represented. Helpful English-language commentaries on cases and statutes discussed in the text are cited in the notes. Quick reference tables of cases and statutes, and indexes of principal works cited and abbrevations complete this useful guide. This invaluable sourcebook will allow lawyers and scholars in common law countries to benefit from recognition and appropriate use of Southern Africa's contributions to the common law in torts and conflict of laws.

The Decision-Making Process for Library Collections: Case Studies in Four Types of Libraries (Contributions in Librarianship and Informatio

A considerable variety of information for libraries planning materials selection policies is relayed in reviews of the relevant literature and in case studies of typical special, public, academic, and school libraries. The case studies consider the location and size of each library as well as its budget, organizational chart, and materials selection procedure. In all, a good collection, well organized and easy to use. Actual collection develpment policies are appended, along with bibliography and index. Booklist

As an outgrowth of the author's discovery that very little material exists discussing how to develop a library collection, this book seeks to identify how some experienced selectors think while deciding to buy, not buy, or discard materials from their collections. While subject areas or types of materials for which selectors are responsible may be vastly different, the author found that all selectors do collection development in the same way, and consider the same types of issues and problems in their decision-making process. The book, then, is designed to help librarians identify this process and understand the theoretical as well as practical aspects of building collections.

Based on information gathered over a period of six years in research at academic, public, school, and special libraries, the book will be just as valuable to experienced practitioners of collection development as it will be to students and newcomers to the field. The first section discusses decision making and collection development, including general trends, theories and literature, and organizational administration. The second section provides case studies of four different types of libraries: public, school, academic, and special. Each type is represented by studies of four specific libraries, with a summary concluding each set of libraries. Finally, a third section draws conclusions based on the case studies, covering dynamic factors affecting the decision-making process as well as the process itself. The book concludes with a group of appendices, a bibliography, and an index. This important work will be an essential reference source for courses in library science and for working librarians in all types of institutions, as well as a valuable addition to college, university, and public libraries.

Naked in Baghdad: The Iraq War and the Aftermath as Seen

As National Public Radio's much loved and respected senior foreign correspondent Anne Garrels has covered conflicts in Chechnya, Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan, and Iraq. In Naked in Baghdad she reveals how as one of only sixteen non-embedded journalists who stayed in the now legendary Palestine Hotel throughout the American invasion she managed to deliver the most immediate, insightful and independent reports with unparalleled vividness and immediacy.
Her evolving relationship with her Iraqi driver/minder Amer, and the wonderful e-mail bulletins sent to friends by her husband, Vint Lawrence, counterpoint the daily events of her life in Baghdad, and result in a deeply moving, and intimate portrait by one of bravest and most enlightening news reporters.

From Publishers Weekly
It is hard not to admire Garrels. Enduring everything from bombing raids and artillery barrages to bad food, corrupt officials and aggressive border guards, this veteran war correspondent continued to report for NPR from her perch at the Palestine Hotel throughout the coalition drive toward Baghdad. After all the major television networks pulled out their staffs, Garrels stayed in the middle of it, painting with words the only picture available to most Americans of what was going on in the center of Iraqi power and in the hearts and minds of the frightened and confused residents. Though she writes in the same clear, straightforward prose familiar to radio listeners, the powerful stuff of her live broadcasts translates poorly to the written page in this day-by-day account of her experience. She admits her limited purview, restricted in what she could see by the Iraqi Information Ministry and later by the hazards of the battlefield, and with the manuscript completed only months after her return, the reader is left feeling that reflection is not Garrels's strong suit. There are some nice details, like an Information Ministry staffer asking Garrels for batteries for his shortwave radio so he can "find out what's really going on." But her off-the-cuff impressions of the response of ordinary Iraqis to the war, which rang so true at the time, come off now as obvious and overly simple. This account works well as a personal narrative of courage under fire, suffering and survival, but unfortunately, it lacks in insightful commentary and summing up of events.

From Booklist
NPR correspondent Garrels, on assignment in Iraq from October 2002, before the war, until April 2003, after the war, offers an inside look at the conflict. She intersperses her reports and reflections with e-mails her husband sent to friends and family, which provide secondary color on the life of a news correspondent. New to Iraq, Garrels focuses on the perils of a new assignment, gathering reliable sources, shepherding all the technology needed for modern radio reporting, and coping with "minders," who^B monitor interviews with Iraqis. She is frank about her uncertainty of how "to tackle this complicated story in a country I don't know." This book is a fascinating look at how she manages, as one of only 16 unembedded reporters in Iraq, with the help of her driver-minder, who becomes a confidant, to cover the build-up to the war and the war itself. Readers looking for details and background on the war will appreciate Garrels' account. Vanessa Bush

Great Insight
By A Customer
Unable to put it down, I read this book on one transatlantic flight.
A nice blend of strightforward reportage of the central events interspersed with highly personal takes on the extortionate nature of the old regime and the constant pressure on foreign correspondents to satisfy the whims of the greedy and disreputable-- too often including their own egos and those of their employers. Those accustomed to the assiduously neutral words of her radio reports will enjoy the way she gets a few things off her chest.
Ms. Garrels does a wonderful job of demonstrating the near-impossibility of determining to a certainty what should be done.
I'll read it again and am buying copies for friends.
Full disclosure: I've known Anne for 20 years and think she is a great reporter!

A good read, but little more
By Charles Hall
This is a well-written, often fascinating account of life in Baghdad under Saddam while waiting for the bombs to fall. It's fun to hear some of the events from war-time Baghdad told from the receiving end.
That said, all she ever reported was local color. What was the purpose in risking her life, except for her own ego and adrenalin rush?
This is a nice little book, but there's not much new or relevant here about the Iraqi situation.

"The usefulness of these essays extends far beyond bibliographical value, for each provides an historical and biographical introduction to the author. A refreshing and exceedingly helpful change from traditional bibliographical eesays is Spector's decision to include enumerative bibliographies at the end of each section, which allows the reader to return to the bibliography and locate relatively quickly one source without having to re-read the essay proper. Lucidly written and critically concise, Spector's essays advance greatly the study of the great English Gothic period."-Genre

If you want this much detail, looks pretty good to me. This is very in depth, and is not a quick, breezy, layperson or coffee table type style look at the subject. The book is definitely an academic type work, so do not get it unless that is specifically what you are looking for.
