Hero of Hispaniola: America's First Black Diplomat, Ebenezer D. Bassett, by Christopher Teal

We know Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice as two of today's most high-profile African American political figures, but who paved the way for these notable diplomats? More than one hundred and thirty years ago, Ebenezer D. Bassett served as the first black United States ambassador. In the midst of the aftermath of the Civil War, the U.S. government broke the color barrier by naming this leading educator, abolitionist, and activist to the controversial post of ambassador to the hemisphere's Black Republic - Haiti. For the first time, a nation founded on the principle that all men are created equal would have as its representative abroad someone previously less than equal under the law. This movement toward equality proved to be a force impossible to turn back, leading to a wider acceptance of blacks in U.S. foreign policy. This book lays bare the struggles Bassett faced as a pioneer of racial integration, helping to secure Bassett's legacy as the first African American political figure, a man who not only altered the American political structure, but led the way for all future civil rights advocates.

This book highlights Bassett's achievements, which directly contributed to the racial revolution in the U.S. These include being appointed the first African American diplomat and chief of a U.S. diplomatic mission, leading the integration of public schools, and fighting for equal rights alongside revolutionaries such as Frederick Douglass. Bassett played a critical role in foreign affairs during the late 19th century, the formative years of American expansionism in Latin America and the Caribbean. 2008 marks the 100th anniversary of Bassett's death. Though he is long forgotten by history, his legacy as an innovator, activist, and diplomat lives on, and his life story―a tale of intelligence, integrity, and bravery―serves as an inspiration to patriotic Americans of all races and backgrounds. Hero of Hispaniola secures Bassett's legacy as the first African American political figure, a man who not only altered the American political structure, but led the way for all future civil rights advocates to follow.

"This is a very readable first biography, although the author's claim that Bassett's appointment 'forever altered US foreign policy' toward equality and democratization (p. 4) is very debatable. Summing Up: Recommended." - Choice

Hero of Hispaniola by Christopher Teal: Book Review Essay
By Chris Teal
Hero of Hispaniola by Christopher Teal: Book Review Essay
By Patricia H. Kushlis

The February 2009 Foreign Service Journal published an article by Christopher Teal on Ebeneezer Bassett, America's first black diplomat. The article summarizes Teal's biography of the same man - a remarkable story that Teal came upon accidentally when he was assigned to the Caribbean as a Foreign Service Officer - and one he researched and turned into a book thereafter.

Bassett, like all other US diplomats until 1924 owed his appointment to political benefactors. In his case, the appointment was a reward for having recruited blacks to serve in the Union Army during the Civil War. His post: Ambassador to Haiti (then spelled Hayti), whose population consisted primarily of former black slaves. He and his family lived there for six years.

A tough assignment then as now

Haiti was a tough assignment for this former educator. It would have been difficult for anyone. The tropical climate took its toll on the health of his Connecticut born family and the Haitian political instability and ensuing violence -characteristics of that country that persist today - were trying. Unlike today with instant communications, however, Bassett was on his own - trying to represent American interests as best he could and communicating with his bosses by written reports transmitted to Washington and dependent for delivery upon the irregular mail. These reports served as a foundation for Teal's book.

That Bassett possessed innate diplomatic skills helped save his and others lives - many times over. That his appeals for help or guidance were often ignored or passed over lightly by the then Secretary of State made Bassett's life even more difficult.

In all too many ways, the parsimony and lack of support from the State Department sounds all too familiar. At one point when Bassett requested a naval ship off shore to be ready to assist in the event of evacuation of American citizens from the war torn island, the US refused to send one even though the British and the French had theirs at the ready.

What makes the US administration's refusal to send even one vessel to protect American interests there even stranger is the fact that not only had the US proclaimed the Monroe Doctrine years before but also - as Teal tells us - that Haiti was seen as a strategically located coaling stop between the US mainland and the Panama Canal.

From US Ambassador to Haiti to Haitian representative in NYC

When Bassett's tour of duty finally ended, he and his large family returned to the U.S. and he became the Haitian representative in New York City. This is not as peculiar as it now sounds: Bassett was not rich. He needed a job to make ends meet, his appointment as a US diplomat had ended and the Haitians needed a representative who knew their country and could represent its interests well

Why Bassett's story remained untold until a junior State Department Officer stumbled upon it more than a century after the fact remains an unanswered question - perhaps as Teal suggests it was because despite Bassett's large family, none of his eight children had children of their own so the family line died out with them. Regardless of what didn't happen, Teal should be commended for not only coming across this remarkable and dedicated man but recognizing his historical importance, conducting the research and making the time to write his biography.

OYSTERS ARE SEXY. LET’S AGREE ON THAT RIGHT AWAY.

But there’s much more to the oyster than simply its legendary power as an aphrodisiac. And that’s what you’ll find inside this charming field guide to oysters by oyster purveyor and champion shucker Patrick McMurray.

Rich in history and lore, CONSIDER THE OYSTER weaves together anecdotes from the author’s experiences as a restaurateur and competitive shucker with practical information on everything from opening oysters with finesse (and a minimum of personal injury!) to planning an oyster party, finding the best oyster bars and ordering hard-to-get bivalves on the Internet.

You’ll also meet the people who grow and export oysters — from the coast of Ireland to the shores of Cape Cod and everywhere in between — and you’ll find yourself longing to taste some of the more than fifty varieties that McMurray details with loving enthusiasm. Wellfleets, Malpeques, Irish Flats, Fines de Claires, Royal Courtesans... They’re all here, just waiting to be discovered and savored as never before.

Review

"Patrick McMurray is an icon among the oyster cult of North America. Not only is he one of the world's elite competitive oyster shuckers...he operates Starfish--a fabulous oyster bar in Toronto, he grow oysters, he writes about oysters with passion and joy, and he, most likely, has just penned the new 'oyster bible.' This 'field guide' is a must own for all kinds of oyster lovers, from the casual enthusiast to the enlightened, life-long devotee."--Jasper White, chef/owner of Summer Shack and author of Lobster at Home and Jasper White's Cooking from New England

PATRICK McMURRAY, the owner of Starfish Oyster Bed & Grill in Toronto, can still remember the thrill of his first oyster at the age of sixteen — “cold, sweet and salty, like the ocean.” Years later, he’s still hooked on oysters and spends part of each year traveling to oyster competitions and food festivals around the globe. He also enjoys guest-shucking at oyster establishments large and small, and was recently spotted at the Grand Central Oyster Bar in New York City.

In 2002, McMurray shucked his way to the title of world champion at the Galway International Oyster Festival in Ireland. Perhaps the Starfish challenge best explains the place that oysters and oyster competitions have in Patrick McMurray’s heart: “100 Malpeque Oysters. 100 Canadian Dollars. 100 Adelaide Street East [the Starfish address]. I dare you. Patrick.”

First rate book on all aspects of oyster eating
By Dr. M. Mckergow
This excellent book, very nicely produced with colour illustrations, presents Toronto-based oyster shucker supreme Patrick McMurray's wisdom about oysters - where they come from, the different species, how to open them, and a great selection of top oyster houses around the world. An ideal present for the seafood lover in your life.

Has It All
By D. Meyers
This book has it all from the history of the oyster, to the subspecies, the life cycle, the health risks and benefits, and traditions. Traditions include where to find what kind of oyster, how to grow them, popular oyster bars, and how to rate them and buy them. Then, if that isn't enough, the author pairs drinks, teaches how to shuck, and how to throw a party. I can't think of anything that was left out except how to find a pearl!

I enjoyed the book.
By Joe Kahiapo
OK I liked the pictures the most. I love oysters, but I'm a novice in knowledge when it comes to oysters. Living in Hawaii, I have to wonder why there isn't a thriving oyster colony living near by. It appears all our oysters are imported, and the local food marts have a limited selection. This was a good start in getting a general background. I confess my wife and I stumbled into the Boston Union oyster bar years ago and I really didn't appreciate the historical value at the time. Anyway, I plan to test the waters and have some oysters fedexed in. I also have a fantasy of opening my own hole in the wall oyster bar. Joe's Oyster Bar or Mililani Middens. Yes my name is Joe. And yes I'm living in Mililani.

Great for travel
By P. K. Enderle
This is a great book for travel. It is paperback and lightweight. Great for any truck-loving kid!

Yes, the stickers don't necessarily go in the book but my 2-year old stuck them in anyway. They are also not too sticky so you can lift them up if they have been stuck onto the text.

If you have a child who loves trucks this is great!
By Sarah G
If you have a child who loves trucks this is a GREAT book. Each picture has a little rhyme next to it so there is plenty to look at and plenty to talk about. The pictures are sharp, the colors are bright and the rhymes are both smart and short!

The stickers are an added bonus. You don't put them in the book, they are just some fun stickers to put anywhere else.

Great Boy Stuff!
By Cynthia
My 3 year old loves this little book...and loves using what he's learned to identify trucks, tractors, and heavy equipment while we're out and about. It is his favorite thing to do when we have special Mommy-Boy time. (It does not compare to getting muddy and building stuff with Daddy, though). As for the stickers...nice, but stickers mixed with my son are a recipe for long hours prying adhesive off of furniture.

Terrorism, Government, and Law: National Authority and Local Autonomy in the War on Terror (Praeger Security International)From Praeger

If the FBI asks local law enforcement agencies to interrogate Arab and Muslim men within their jurisdictions, may the Detroit Chief of Police decline to do so? Would allowing the federal government to insist on local assistance be an example of undesirable federal overreaching or desirable national uniformity? If the FBI engages in a Joint Terrorism Task Force with local law enforcement officials in Portland, Oregon, may Portland police officers ignore surveillance-limiting Oregon state laws that apply to them, but not to the FBI? May those officers be bound to secrecy and prohibited from telling their employers if their colleagues violate state law? If the city of Arcata, California, disapproves of powers the USA Patriot Act gives federal investigators, may it prohibit its law enforcement personnel from helping the FBI conduct investigations?

Concern about the proper balance between federal and local authority reaches back to the founding of our nation. That discussion has been re-ignited by the shock waves generated on September 11, 2001, which profoundly challenged our understandings of various constitutional strategies established to prevent overreaching by the Federal government. Until now, the discussion about the impact of 9/11 on American law has paid little attention to federalism, a vertical check on the federal government that complements the horizontal checks created by the separation of powers of the legislative, judicial, and executive branches.

Questions about the ability of state and local governments to make their own policy choices form an important subset of questions about how far the federal government can or should go in its antiterrorism efforts. Clashes between claims of national authority and claims of local autonomy raise political questions that play out within a framework of constitutional law. Terrorism, Government, and Law is designed to foster an important national conversation on this subject.

Rex Zero and the End of the World, by Tim Wynne-Jones

"Who wouldn't want to spend time with the . . . eccentric Norton-Nortons?"―M. T. Anderson

Why does everyone seem so scared? That's what the new boy in town, Rex Norton-Norton, aka Rex Zero, wonders as he rides his bike through Ottawa's streets. Is it spies? Kidnappers? Or is it because of the shadowy creature some say is stalking Adams Park? One thing is certain in this summer of 1962 as the Cold War heats up: nothing is quite what it seems. What's a boy to do? If his name is Rex Zero and he has a bike he calls "Diablo," five wild and funny siblings, an alpha dog named Kincho, a basement bomb shelter built of old Punch magazines, and a mind that turns everything inside out, he's bound to come up with an amazing idea.

With its mystery, adventure, laugh-out-loud scenes of family chaos, and underlying message of hope, this wonderfully original novel from Tim Wynne-Jones explores the impact of doomsday on the imagination of one smart and funny twelve-year-old boy.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8–It is 1962, and Rex Norton-Norton (aka Rex Zero) has been transplanted again, this time to Ottawa, along with his quirky family. With five siblings in his family, including boy-crazy Cassiopeia and Annie Oakley (who is convinced that the local nuns are Communist spies), there's plenty of activity, but no real friends for Rex and his trusty bicycle, Diablo. Lonely, he joins Kathy and her gang of kids who are convinced that an escaped panther, Tronido, is loose. Looming over the panther hunting is the backdrop of the Cold War, producing bomb shelters, rumors, and, for Rex, a few mysteries to solve. Fiction set in Canada during this period is relatively rare, making this an unusual and appealing title. Unfortunately, this book lacks an explanation of what is taking place, and its target audience won't be familiar with the historical underpinnings. Also, some of the references to TV shows and other 1960s culture will be equally baffling for kids. That said, the memorable characters and the animal mystery will keep the pages turning. Despite some confusion, readers will find something here to enjoy.–Caitlin Augusta, The Darien Library, CT

From Booklist
"Rex Zero and I have a lot in common," Wynne-Jones says in an afterword to this first-person, present-tense narrative that depicts, in part, what it was like growing up in a big family that moved to Ottawa in the early 1960s. The shadow of the cold war is ever present. Some neighbors and government agencies build bomb shelters, and Rex's angry sister is obsessed with the nuclear threat ("Reds and Yanks have to be stopped"). But for Rex, the big problem is making new friends as he starts sixth grade in a new place. There's a bit too much period trivia about such things as TV and movie characters, but the sense of looming doomsday will hold readers, as will the timeless drama of moving and trying to fit in. Review

“Who wouldn't want to spend time with the wonderfully observed, engagingly eccentric Norton-Nortons? As always, Wynne-Jones' eye for odd and telling detail creates a fantastically charming cast of characters that demand attention as they claim to be mutant zombie hunters, photographers of the impossible, prophets of doom, and, in the case of Rex Zero, himself, just a kid trying to get along in a Cold War world gone mad.” ―M.T. Anderson

“Brilliant in its near stream-of-consciousness depiction of the world as Rex sees it . . . The meticulous plotting sets the enormity of world destruction against the equally cataclysmic concerns of childhood. It's a historic narrative that resonates eerily and effectively today.” ―The Horn Book, Starred Review

“Wynne-Jones writes with a light, often humorous touch and maintains a perspective true to an 11-year-old's perspective. This winning hero paints a universe both hopeful and realistic, one that readers may well want to visit.” ―Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

“Delightfully nerve-wracking, eccentric and optimistic.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“The sense of looming doomsday will hold readers, as will the timeless drama of moving and trying to fit in.” ―Booklist

“A fast-moving, quirky romp through apocalyptic anxiety.” ―The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

“Eccentric and charming.” ―VOYA

“An unusual and appealing title.” ―School Library Journal

Cue the R.E.M. song
By E. R. Bird
You ever read an author, love their work, and then wake up at 2 a.m. with the sneaky suspicion that maybe all their books are good and that you've simply been missing out all these years? That's me, that is. I'm that. I've just read me a Tim Wynne-Jones book, thought it was top notch work, and then I started telling this to people. "Oh," they would say with sly little smiles plastered all over their faces. "And have you ever read anything by Tim before?" "Well, no," I'd confess. My compatriots would then nod sagely and the conversation would turn elsewhere, leaving me with the vague feeling that maybe I couldn't judge "Red Zero and the End of the World" unless I'd somehow read its author's entire children's literary oeuvre. Then I'd remember that a good reviewer reviews the book in front of them and not how that book stands up in the face of the writer's previous titles. So if you're already a Tim Wynne-Jones fan, I have good and bad news for you. The good is that I loved this book and I think it's great. The bad is that I don't know if it's any greater than anything else he's ever done. I guess you'll just have to pick yourself up a copy of this puppy and determine the rest for yourself.

In 1962 the end of the world is near. At least that's what the crazy guy with the sign walking around the streets of Ottawa would have you believe. For Rex Norton-Norton (Rex Zero, for short), the world might well be ending for all he knows. He's just moved to Ottawa from Vancouver (and, before that, from Britain) and since it's the summer you would think that there would be some kids about to play with. There are kids, sure, but whenever Rex sees them they're usually moving as fast as they can away from him. It's very mysterious. Soon the boy befriends some of the locals and the truth comes out. The kids of the town are terrified because there's a gigantic panther on the loose. It's been sighted, but no adult is willing to believe this improbable possibility, which means that it's up to the kids to capture the beast and save themselves. Set against the backdrop of the Cold War in a time of uncertainty and paranoia, author Tim Wynne-Jones constructs an elegant metaphor for a time when people fight against a misunderstood threat with potentially disasterous results.

We, as Americans, don't read a lot of children's books where the hero is a Brit who has moved to Canada. They're all English speaking countries, but somehow such books are almost exotic to us. Even in the depths of their suburbia, they're exotic. This, to my mind, is what sets Mr. Wynne-Jones apart as an author. He fills his book with distinctive details that round out the text and, at the same time, keep the story amusing to child readers. For example, I liked it when Rex sat watching television with his parents, slowly coming to the realization that they were so wrapped up in the program about the Cold War that they've forgotten he's even there. Rex eventually feels so freaked out by the programs that he's obliged to yell, "What am I doing here? . . . Somebody, please make me go to bed!" It's bits like these that give the story the feeling that everything here is, somehow, "real".

You won't find a shortage of quality children's fiction pertaining to the 1960s in the world today. Paranoia makes for strong literature, particularly in these paranoia-laden times in which we live. Of course paranoia, which is to say kid-friendly paranoia, can take on a variety of different forms. In this particular book, it trickles down to the kids in the neighborhood, causing them to see monsters in the very streets around them. In books like The Loud Silence of Francine Green by Karen Cushman, though, the metaphor is a bit more open and blunt, rendering the book a mature and entirely different beastie. What distinguishes "Rex Zero" then is how child-friendly the entire book is. You like Rex. You like his kooky family. You like them in spite of the fact that writing original kooky families is almost impossible in this day and age. Child and adult readers are almost entirely kookied out. It takes a great deal of restraint and training to write one with as strong an undercurrent of truth as is found in "Rex Zero". I credit the fact that Mr. Wynne-Jones has based much of the story here on his own family and you can feel that love emanating from his writing. When Rex and his younger sister share a joke that only the two of them find funny and end up rolling under the kitchen table with laughter, that scene alone struck me as almost too true to write.

I've heard some people complain that this book is too blatant with its incomprehensible 1962 references and props. For example, Rex lives in a home that he has named the House of Punch, due to the overabundance of old Punch magazines currently littering the basement below. Or there are his multiple references to "real Wonder bread" which is more than mildly baffling to any reader, young or old. All that aside, I didn't feel that any of this hurt the potential audience of this title. Fleeting confusion is hardly the be all and end all of any title, let alone one as fun and enthralling as this.

"Rex Zero and the End of the World" may be a period piece, but its premise is as timely as ever today. With a great cast of characters, top notch writing, and a story that keeps you guessing, this is one of the unsung gems of the 2007 year. Well worth a gander, should you get a chance to note it.

funny and moving
By Helen Frost
I love to be carried into a story on a magic carpet of laughter, and that's what Tim Wynne-Jones does for us here. Rex Zero wins my heart immediately by assigning random numbers to his paint-by-number paint pots and then watching with interest to see how the pictures turn out. So believable and original. The Cold War history that permeates the book is of special interest because the point of view is Canadian--as an American reader, I kept being startled to see how that made the terrain just a little unfamiliar, even when it seemed, at first, to be something I knew. Don't miss this book--you'll love the family, from brave big sister, Annie Oakley, to Flora Bella and the Sausage--but most especially, the smart, heroic Rex Zero himself.

Historical fiction, Cold-War Era
By Experienced Editor
It's the summer of 1962, and a panther has escaped from the Granby Zoo--wherever that is.
At first Rex Zero, newly moved from Vancouver to Ottawa, doesn't understand why his new town has no kids his own age. Well, he sees a few, but never for long: they always appear to be fleeing in terror. His sister Annie Oakley says they're running away from mutants caused by atomic radiation. An old man at the park claims the world is ending and even knows the date: October 23.
Having four sisters and a brother called "the Sausage" isn't the same as having friends. Rex spends the summer days riding his trusty bike Diablo or working on his paint-by-number kits. Carefully he relabels each little pot of paint. "The colors of his face are supposed to be 37 and 39, which means that in my version they are 6 and 4: a kind of sickly yellow and an apple green. He doesn't look as if he likes sailing all that much. Or maybe he's thinking about the sandwiches they packed for their picnic." Rex's unique artwork becomes a metaphor for his new life: a world turned inside out.
Before long Rex meets other sixth graders who aren't running, and learns that they believe an escaped panther is lurking in the park. An aging World War I veteran suffering the aftereffects of mustard gas and a sympathetic beatnik poet contribute clues that help Rex unravel a series of unsettling events. When Rex recruits his new classmates in a plot to trap the panther, he gets more than he bargained for.
Plentiful period references, from Sea Hunt to Sputnik, are arguably more appealing to boomers than to preteens; how many ten-year-olds will appreciate a quip about Khrushchev's shoe? The atmosphere is authentic, however, giving a strong sense of what it was like to grow up during the duck-and-cover Cold War. The attitudes and emotions portrayed offer surprising parallels to today's experience of growing up with the possibility of nuclear war.
Despite the sober subtext, Rex's first-person narrative is rich with goofy humor. "We've smashed the joke atom, and now even the simplest of words is dangerously funny." History, mystery, humor and suspense work well together in a savory mix that can't be classified. Rex Zero and the End of the World is a serious story that successfully avoids taking itself too seriously.

Review

“From the wryly humorous opening, in which the infant Tucker Mouse chooses his name, to the satisfying warmth of Tucker and Harry's defense of their drainpipe home in Times Square, the characters . . . are as vibrant and joyful as ever. . . . Wonderfully expressive black-and-white illustrations.” ―Publishers Weekly on Harry Kitten and Tucker Mouse

“Chester, a country cricket who misses stargazing during his stay in the city, takes a breathtaking ride with new friend Lulu Pigeon over New York. Descriptions of Central Park and Times Square are evocative . . . Full-page pen-and-ink drawings are panoramic and most vibrant when depicting the familiar Chester, Harry Cat, and Tucker.” ―Booklist on Chester Cricket's Pigeon Ride

“Thoughtful but unpretentious, humorous without more cleverness, this is nothing less than a good story, well told and sympathetically illustrated.” ―School Library Journal on Chester Cricket's Pigeon Ride

“Williams's big, breathtaking pen-and-ink drawings almost steal the show from the author.” ―Publishers Weekly on Chester Cricket's Pigeon Ride

About the Author

George Selden (1929-1989) was the author of The Cricket in Times Square, winner of the 1961 Newbery Honor and a timeless children's classic. Born in Hartford, Connecticut, Selden received his B.A. from Yale, where he was a member of the Elizabethan Club and contributed to the literary magazine. He spent three summer sessions at Columbia University and, after college, studied for a year in Rome on a Fulbright Scholarship.

People often asked Selden how he got the idea for The Cricket in Times Square. "One night I was coming home on the subway, and I did hear a cricket chirp in the Times Square subway station. The story formed in my mind within minutes. An author is very thankful for minutes like those, although they happen all too infrequently." The popular Cricket series grew to seven titles, including Tucker's Countryside and The Old Meadow. In 1973, The Cricket in Times Square was made into an animated film. Selden wrote more than fifteen books, as well as two plays. His storytelling blends the marvelous with the commonplace realities of life, and it was essential to him that his animal characters display true emotions and feelings.

Selden lived in New York City until his death in December 1989. He enjoyed music, archaeology, and J.R.R. Tolkien. His editor, Stephen Roxburgh, said, "Chester Cricket, Harry Cat, Tucker Mouse, and their friends celebrate the triumph of innocence and camaraderie over cynicism and selfishness. George Selden is gone, but his voice lives on in Chester Cricket's song."

Garth Williams illustrated all seven of the Chester Cricket books and many other distinguished works, including Stuart Little, Charlotte's Web, and the Little House series by Laura Ingalls Wilder.

Nathan the Wise (Bedford Series in History & Culture), by Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, Ronald Schechter

One of the most frequently performed and widely read comedies of the eighteenth century, Gotthold Ephraim Lessing's Nathan the Wise (1779) combines rich characterization with an engaging plot. Set in Muslim-ruled Jerusalem at the time of the Crusades, it deals with universal themes -- including the nature of God, antisemitism, wealth and poverty, and the conflict between love and duty. Today the play is as timely as ever. This edition, the first English version expressly intended for undergraduates, contains an insightful introduction that discusses the play, Lessing and the Enlightenment, and the situation of Jews in eighteenth-century Europe. Additionally, there are five related historical documents -- each with a context-setting headnote -- illustrations, a chronology, questions for consideration, and a selected bibliography.

Conflict between religion and tolerance: Reality or myth
By Ronnie
Lessing played a pivotal role in the German Enlightenment. Lessing's play "Nathan the Wise" is as relevant, if not more so, in the post 9/11 world of the 21st century as it was in the late 18th century when it was written. No single group has a monopoly over religious beliefs and practices. Every individual has the right to exercise freedom over whatever religion he or she chooses to follow. "All religions lead to the same God through different paths" according to the Indian divine and mystic Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa who practiced all religions. No religion can claim to know the absolute truth.

The belief of knowing the absolute truth has been the starting point of all religious violence that has been witnessed through the ages, even to the present day. Thinking of one religion's as superior to others and holding prejudices towards other religions has led to riots and religious holocausts. The false notion of thinking of the other religions as antagonistic to others has been the root of religious fundamentalism. Making generalizations about people from a specific religion as evil or moral or superior is a folly. Every religion has its share of adherents who not only fall into extreme shades of black and white but can also be classified within intermediary shades of grey. Devouts and fanatics are in every religion though most people fall in between these two categories. In today's world the stakes are too high for religious bigotry and belligerence.

In a world armed to the teeth with nuclear weapons, religious chauvinism can lead to the decimation of all of humanity, no matter what religion they follow. Religious jingoism has to be struck at its roots before the monster devours the whole of humanity. It is also important to remember that religious riots and violence are often triggered by petty and avaricious politicians and leaders for their own vested interests while the gullible public fall prey to such predatory and vicious political marketing of hypocritical and immoral ideals. It is necessary to have a balanced view of religion and not look at other religions with a jaundiced view.

Thoughtfull, touching, entertaining, classical literature
By Amazon Kunde
I first read this book (actually it is a play) in highschool and though I generally hated to be forced to read a book I really loved this one. I finished way ahead of schedule.
The reason: this book is extremely very well and has an up-to-date message even though it was written several 100 years back. The story is abou a Jewish merchant called Nathan, a templar and Nathan's daughter and the love between the templar and the daughter and the conflicts arising from it.
It is set in the time of the crusades and its message is: it does not matter which religion you believe in as long as you are a decent human being. This message was only written in a play because the author was officially forbidden from teaching his reconciliatory views on religion in university! It must have been a hardship for him, but today we can enjoy a literary masterpiece for just that reason. For me it is a perfect book and it might very well be the same for you.

Used for a "religion and reason" class, this tale was definitely interesting. Would definitely recommend it to any high school or college student looking for different perceptions of religion!
