On the first day of school, Artie falls out of his bed and hits his head. Hard. He tells his mom he's dizzy and she says, "You're just worried about your first day in a new school."

At breakfast, his little brother, Eddie, splashes syrup in his hair, and there's no time to wash it. Artie has to go to school with syrup-hair. And then, on the way there, he gets splashed by a puddle that makes him look like he wet his pants. It's not just the first day of school; it's the worst day of school.

On the second day of school, Artie falls out of bed and hits his head. Hard. He tells his mom he's dizzy and she says, "You're just worried about your first day in a new school."

Huh? Today is just like the day before. Can Artie find a way to change it, before it's the first day of school…forever?

Review

“Stine takes the normal anxieties of childhood--in this case, the first day at a new school--and blends exaggerated humor with a few equally exaggerated moments of horror in a fast and goofy romp. Lots of fun for Stine fans.” ―Booklist

“As usual, Stine delivers the hilarity and horror that readers love, and his mastery of sustaining mood will not disappoint. The humor and descriptive first, first day of school allow for faster pacing in the subsequent days, and kids will love the twist at the end.” ―School Libary Journal

“Stine's signature blend of horror and humor, combined with an unexpected ending, offers a fresh view on a familiar idea.” ―ABC New York

“The genuinely scary encounters in Ardmore's basement will get kids racing through the pages. And the surprising twist in the end provides the just right explanation for it all.” ―ReadKiddoRead.com

“R. L. Stine, author of the Goosebumps series, brings his unique blend of storytelling, suspense, humor and horror to It's the First Day of School . . . Forever! . . . . Stine's many fans will not be disappointed in this book, and anyone who likes mysteries, humor or scary books will enjoy it as well.” ―BookPage

“Stine excels in describing events every school child fears. His young fans will find this one a satisfying read.” ―TeensReadToo.com

“A preteen horror take on Groundhog Day . . . . Great fun as ever, supplied by genre's most prolific and reliable master.” ―Kirkus

“Blending comedy with his trademark brand of bestselling horror, Stine's take on a Groundhog Day–style premise stars a fifth grader stuck reliving his disastrous first day at a new school.… There's some expected repetition as Artie's day replays, but Stine's embellishments--including plenty of chapter cliffhangers and a twist ending--keep things wickedly funny (Artie is a ready source of quips and one-liners) and increasingly ghoulish (on the second go-round, the dog bites the principal's hand; later, he bites the hand off). After bearing witness to the injuries, humiliations, and terrors that Artie faces, even readers' toughest days at school will feel like a breeze.” ―Publishers Weekly

“Intriguing and well written, this nightmare inducing novel will appeal to any fan of the Goosebumps series of books.” ―Danielle Williams, Children's Literature

From It’s the First Day of School . . . Forever:

I started to climb the stone steps that led to the white double doors at the entrance. I was halfway up when I recognized the man in the brown suit at the top.

He was Mr. Jenks, the principal. I’d met him when Mom and Dad brought me to see my new school for the first time. He was shaking hands and greeting every student.

“Artie, hello,” he said. He reached out and shook my hand. I smelled peppermint on his breath. “Welcome to Ardmore.”

I was nearly through the front door when I heard a commotion behind me.  Kids shouted.  A dog barked.  “Huh?” I spun around and instantly recognized the big dog racing up the stairs.  “Wowser?”  Oh no. he followed me to school.  “Wowser—down!” I shouted.  But the dog never listens to me.  I watched helplessly as the giant monster dog—my giant monster dog—tretched onto his hind legs. Leaped onto Mr. Jinks. Licked the principal’s face. Pawed his shoulders, leaving big mud stains all over.

Then I heard a loud RRRRIPPPP as Wowser tore the jacket pocket right off the principal’s brown suit.

Mr. Jenk’s face turned bright red. “Artie,” he said softly. “Is this your dog?”

The masterful, and scary, R. L. Stine plays off of first day of school fears to make this novel come alive
By KidsReads
Summer break is winding down, and the last thing you want to think about is the dreaded first day of school. Instead of the beach, endless hours of freedom, and crazy adventures, you're stuck with homework, boring teachers, and picking fights with the school bully. All of this can only be worse if you're at a brand new school where you feel lost, friendless and hopeless. For Artie Howard, this is just the beginning of a nightmare that he will have to live over and over again.

The morning on the first day of school couldn't go any worse for Artie. He bangs his head after falling out of bed, drips syrup all over his hair and t-shirt, and looks like he peed his pants after getting splashed by a truck while walking to school. When he finally makes it to school, his dog tackles the principal, he hits the most popular kid, Brick, in the back of the head with a baseball, and ends up in the wrong classroom. As if that wasn't enough, he flings the class scorpion out of the window, discovers a scary basement room filled with corpses, and manages to offend the most beautiful girl in the world. The only thing Artie wants is for this horrible day to end.

The first day of school --- take two. Artie bangs his head after falling out of bed and proceeds to have an argument about whether or not it's the first day of school with his mother. He watches in disbelief as syrup is splattered all over his t-shirt and hair. He desperately tries to avoid getting splashed by the truck, but still manages to look like he peed his pants. His dog attacks the principal, the most popular kid in school, Brick, is still injured by a baseball, and, well, you see the pattern developing. Despite his best efforts, Artie's first day of school is nightmarish all over again.

The first day of school --- take three. After banging his head in the morning and arguing with his mother about whether or not it's the first day of school, Artie is determined not to make the same mistakes. No matter how hard he tries, though, he can't stop the horrible chain of events that is now his life. After his dog rips off the principal's hand and drags around the bloody appendage, Artie realizes something is much worse about his third first day of school. It's about to get even weirder, and there's nothing Artie can do to stop it!

We've all had nightmares about the first day of school and all the horrible things that can go wrong. In my dreams I usually forget to wear my pants, leave all my school supplies at home, and end up getting on the bad side of the teacher. The good news is that we all eventually wake up, relieved that none of it is true. The masterful --- and scary --- R.L. Stine plays off of these fears and makes them come to life. Poor Artie Howard. The kid just can't catch a break. By the time you're done reading, you'll be glad that it's him instead of you.

Not SO Horrific -- A Fun School Story
By Jennifer Donovan
The movie Groundhog Day and Wendy Mass' book 11 Birthdays have each tackled the topic of one day happening over and over, so this book by R.L. Stine does not start with a wholly original topic, but he does put a unique spin on the idea, as 6th-grader Artie not only faces the first day of school over and over, but the first day of school as the new kid.

He's plagued by all the things that concern kids across the nation on the first day of school: what to wear, who to eat with at lunch, which desk to sit in, how to navigate the school, how to avoid getting into trouble. Unfortunately, even if he's trying to avoid it, trouble is coming for him. He gets off on a bad foot with the principal when his dog follows him to school and for breaking the dress code by wearing a hat.

Artie is pretty lovable. You have to root for this kid who is trying to do everything right, but ends up doing everything wrong, even when he's lived through it once or twice!

The bulk of the book is taken up with the telling of the first first day, but I still wondered how he would keep it fresh as the same events repeated themselves. Well, he did. Artie's observations and strategies on the subsequent days add life and humor to the story, and of course, there are the zombies.

Zombies? That's right, this is R.L. Stine after all. I was never a Goosebumps reader, so this was my first exposure to him, and I was thinking that this was a pretty normal school story for someone who was supposed to be the master of horror for little ones, until the zombies and giant scorpions appeared. In truth, the zombies aren't really all that terrifying or gross. Maybe it's because it seems less real due to the repetition of the story.

I wondered how the story was going to resolve, and I was impressed with Stine's creative explanation that is likely to sit well with most kids in this age group. I'm glad that I was able to check out this book, read in a simple straight-forward way by Matthew Brown. If my son wanted to read more of R.L. Stine's books, I don't think I'd stop him, but this was definitely a good place to start.

The Importance of Being Barbra: The Brilliant, Tumultuous Career of Barbra Streisand, by Tom Santopietro

Controversial, a global icon, a diva among divas---Barbra Streisand, the last genuinely unique show business personality of the twentieth century is the most honored entertainer in the world today. But along with the Tony, two Oscars, six Emmys, eight Grammys, ten Golden Globes, fifty gold albums, and wild acclaim have come wildly diverse reactions to a personality as outsized as her talent. In the words of Streisand herself, "I'm a liberal, opinionated Jewish feminist---I push a lot of buttons."
In Tom Santopietro's witty yet analytical look at this one-of-a-kind career, the myths and personal foibles are stripped away, and the focus lands squarely on the work. From the early recordings to the groundbreaking television specials, from the Hollywood blockbusters to the history-making comeback concerts, Streisand's career is placed within an oftentimes uniquely American social context but always allowed to speak for itself. In a brisk, funny, and always compelling style, The Importance of Being Barbra reveals all the milestones in a new and sometimes startling light, ranging from the brilliance of Funny Girl and The Broadway Album to the misbegotten yet curiously popular A Star Is Born.
Treating Barbra Streisand like the serious artist she is---and has always claimed to be---The Importance of Being Barbra delves into the key reasons for her all-encompassing success: the overwhelming ambition, the notorious perfectionism, the fervent gay following, the dramatic pull of a voice and style that mysteriously connect with the lovelorn all around the world. A full-scale examination of the acting, singing, and directing that have ranged from the dazzling to the occasionally inexplicable---it's all here for anyone who has ever wondered at the phenomenon that is Barbra Streisand.

From Publishers Weekly
Theater manager Santopietro writes a decorous, dry analysis of "überdiva" Barbra Streisand, examining five decades of recordings, concerts, film, theater and politics. He analyzes Streisand as a "walking mass of contradictions," parsing those paradoxes through critical readings of her professional and personal gambits. Just as Streisand's "Brooklyn-ese" fades from her rich singing voice, so her stage and studio persona—tightly controlled—masks a diffidence in the limelight that just feeds her fans' interest. For these folks, the seminal sound bites of her career, from "Hello, gorgeous" to "So long, dearie," constitute the narrative's few flashes of energy, evoking Streisand in more glory than can be conveyed here. Santopietro astutely embeds his subject in cultural context to underscore her zeitgeist appeal; her brash urgency and in-your-face ethnicity, epitomized in "the nose," endears her to those out of the mainstream, including feminists and gays, and, in the '60s, augured the demise of pre-Vietnam dormancy. A prototype of postmodern celebrity, Streisand cultivated her own image, embellishing her "ugly duckling" myth through autobiographical roles. The author's discerning, nuanced critiques of Streisand's works depict a career of subtle evolution not without its setbacks, shedding welcome light on her uneven reception over the years. But his scholarly cant will perplex readers expecting a juicier read. Photos. (June)

“Not at all the average fan tribute, The Importance of Being Barbra mixes milk-and-honey admiration with bracing shots of vinegar. Tom Santopietro ‘gets’ his idol---loves her for what she is, understands what she is not (but still could be!). His book is smart, funny, right-on. An encyclopedic must-read for anybody who has pondered the greatness, perfection, and oddities of Miss Streisand.” ―Liz Smith, New York Post columnist

“An astute and thorough analysis of Streisand's career told in a brisk and engaging style while carefully establishing Streisand as a major cultural icon.” ―A. R. Gurney Jr., author of Love Letters and Scenes from American Life

“For both fan and non-fan this is a fast-paced examination of a superstar's career. A great read.” ―Bob Avian, Tony Award - winning choreographer of A Chorus Line and Ballroom

“Tom Santopietro's [The Importance of Being Barbra is an] encyclopedic but wonderfully entertaining account of Barbra Streisand's career, one 'unparalleled in the history of show business.' Who could argue? Who could resist?” ―Jay Presson Allen, screenwriter of Cabaret and Funny Lady

Barbra as product; slick, stylish but flawed!
By Thomas W. Jacobs
This book is NOT a biography; it is strictly a book reviewing & critiquing Barbra's work in theater, television, film, recordings, concerts, & politics.

The author makes some good observations and is generally fair in his assessments. I didn't agree with his views 100% of the time but it was fun to see what he did & did not like. It's easy to see what failed in hindsight however, Stantopietro does not gloat but rather laments what might have been with perhaps a little more thought or planning on Barbra's part.

Fun; a definite "must have" for true Barbra fans!

Truly the Greatest Star
By Kirwan
I too guess I'm the wrong person to review this book, having been a Barbra Streisand fan for 43 of my 53 years. But, finally, it's exciting to read a well written book that delves into what matters the most - the creative work of Ms. Streisand. She has always said that the public knows the truth when they hear or see it, and this book does well in focusing on the considerable talents of Barbra; that's the truth. She is the most talented artist/entertainer of our generation. Heck, of just about any generation. The author knows his subject well; so well in fact that he can appreciate the nunances of her recordings, films, television and concert works. How wonderful to read a book by someone who knows her work so intimately (as do we die-hard fans) to be able to note the vocal and phrasing differences in the 9 recorded versions of "People" over the years on various albums. That's what I call a connoisseur! The author's breathe and depth are exceptional, and I for one am glad that after so many books which dish her fingernails, hairstyles, clothes, dating history, or whatever, this author focuses on what matters the most. And what matters the most is the outstanding quality of work this "actress who sings" has given the world. A must read for the long-term fan who has been with her from "My Name is Barbra" to the Fall 2006 Concert tour, and equally valuable for the newer fan, or anyone who wonders why Barbra Streisand is The Greatest Star. Thank you Barbra for your incredible work, and thank you Tom for an excellent, credible book.

GREAT analysis!
By Remyjohn
This is a non-gossip analysis of Barbra's career in it's various facets. You may disagree with some of the author's opinions (as I did with his evaluation of "What About Today," but you'll appreciate how this book examine's her work in social and psychological contexts. The perfect companion for Barry Dennen's book, "My Life With Barbra: A Love Story," a highly personal observation of her early life and career.

The Poet Slave of Cuba: A Biography of Juan Francisco Manzano, by Margarita Engle

A lyrical biography of a Cuban slave who escaped to become a celebrated poet.

Born into the household of a wealthy slave owner in Cuba in 1797, Juan Francisco Manzano spent his early years by the side of a woman who made him call her Mama, even though he had a mama of his own. Denied an education, young Juan still showed an exceptional talent for poetry. His verses reflect the beauty of his world, but they also expose its hideous cruelty.

Powerful, haunting poems and breathtaking illustrations create a portrait of a life in which even the pain of slavery could not extinguish the capacity for hope.

The Poet Slave of Cuba is the winner of the 2008 Pura Belpre Medal for Narrative and a 2007 Bank Street - Best Children's Book of the Year.

From School Library Journal
Grade 7 Up-This is an absolutely lovely book about the unlovely subject of slavery. It is the biography of an extraordinary young man, with extraordinary intellectual powers, who was born into slavery in Cuba in 1797. Told in verse, it recounts the sufferings and trials of Manzano. As a boy, he was capable of memorizing and reciting poetic verses in many different languages. He could recount epic tales read to him, and in this way served as the entertainment for his mistress and her many guests. Later, when he became the property of a crueler mistress, his talents helped him endure numerous beatings and confinements. It is amazing that he was able to survive, and even more astonishing that he was able to maintain his humanity and his sensitive poetic nature. Manzano's sufferings are almost too painful to read about, but the experience is made bearable by Engle's skillful use of verse. Qualls's drawings are suitably stark and compelling, wonderfully complementing the text. This is an exceptional book on two levels. First, it introduces Manzano to an American public. Second, it introduces readers to slavery as it was practiced in a country other than the United States. Both are noteworthy. This is a book that should be read by young and old, black and white, Anglo and Latino.-Carol Jones Collins, Columbia High School, Maplewood, NJ

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Gr. 7-10. In plain, stirring free verse, Engle dramatizes the boyhood of the nineteenth-century Cuban slave Juan Francisco Manzano, who secretly learned to read and wrote poetry about beauty and courage in his world of unspeakable brutality. His present-tense narrative begins when he is six, when his parents are set free. He remains behind with a mistress who treats him like a pet, making him perform for guests. When she dies, five years later, he is given to a cruel, crazy woman, who has him beaten and locked up at whim. He doesn't escape until he is nearly 16. Side-by-side with Juan's anguished voice are the narratives of other characters, including his mother, his demonic owners, and the white child who secretly tries to help. Qualls' occasional black-and-white sketches express Juan's suffering and strength, and a brief afterword fills in historical background. Related in fast-moving poetry, the cruelty is vivid, as is the boy's amazing inner power: tied, gagged, and beaten, Juan knows his owner "can't hear the stories I tell myself." Today's readers will hear the stories, though--and never forget them. Hazel Rochman

Soy Cuba
By E. R. Bird
The verse novel is a tricky fickle thing. Though no one to the best of my knowledge has ever put down the rules that govern the creation of a verse novel, there are always a couple unwritten understandings. No verse novel should tell its tale through poetry when it would make more sense to tell it through prose. Also, just breaking up a bunch of sentences into lines doesn't mean you're writing poetry or anything. The ideal verse novel is one where it makes sense to write a story through poetry AND just happens to have an ear for beautiful language. Such is the case with Margaraita's, "The Poet Slave of Cuba". In the book it says that, "The life of Juan Francisco Manzano haunted her for years before she finally realized that to do justice to the Poet Slave's story, she needed to write it in verse". The result is an achingly beautiful and horrific story that deserves to be read by teens everywhere.

Born a slave in Cuba in 1797, Juan Francisco Manzano grew up the toast of his owner Dona Beatriz. His ability to memorize speeches, plays, and words of all sorts made him a kind of sought over pet to the Spanish aristocracy. Though she promised to grant him his freedom when she died and she allowed both his parents to buy their freedom, Juan Francisco remained a slave after Dona Beatriz's death and was handed over to the dangerously psychotic Marquesa de Prado Ameno. The Marquesa resents Juan from the moment he is put into her possession and every attempt he makes at reading or writing is put down with shocking violence. A biography told in poems, this book shows the worst of slavery's cruelties and the sheer will it takes to not only survive under such conditions but escape.

The text in the book alternates between different points of view on almost every page. In a sense, the villains have just as much of a say as the heroes. Juan, for his part, sometimes will have three pages in a row of thoughts, each with its own separate poem. Alongside this format are illustrations by Sean Qualls. Qualls has a style that usually doesn't do much for me. In this case, however, he's the perfect complement to Engle's tale. The white aristocracy with their blank eyes and sharp pointed teeth are positively horrific. These images magnify the storyline. Here, for example, are two ladders that lead suggestively against a wall. Now a shiny coin. Now a butterfly. They are rough unfinished drawings that show far better Juan's situation than any polished colored print could ever convey.

At first I was a little perturbed that for all the book's poetry and loveliness, I couldn't find any actual poetry by the real Juan Francisco Manzano. Then I reached the end of the title and in the back found that author Margarita Engle not only offers us a biography of the true Juan Francisco, but reprints his bibliographic details as well.

Now, there is a debate surrounding this book. It is not a debate that questions whether the story is told well or whether or not Engle gets her point across to the reader. It's more a question of audience. Though published by Henry Holt, Inc's young reader division, and not a specific teen imprint, there is little doubt in my mind that this is not exactly kiddie fare. It's repeatedly violent, often to extremes. There is more bloodshed, torture, screams, and pain in this book than you'll find in most children's literature. To put it plainly, this is the "Beloved", of kiddie lit. Which, when you think about it, doesn't make it very kid-friendly at all. Teens, on the other hand, will find much to appreciate here. Juan Francisco spends much of this book as a teen, after all. His thoughts and actions are not those of a young boy, but rather a man trapped in an untenable situation. As such, I'd steer this book clear of the shorter set and aim towards kids with some maturity.

You read about the main character's pain, and to some extent a kind of apathy has to take place or the story's too difficult to bear. As a reader, you actually find yourself wondering how a person could live under such grueling conditions without a hope of a reprieve and still want to live. And there is a moment in the book when someone says that good always triumphs over evil. That it is amazing that the devil even tries. Words like these and phrases of this sort have been turning about in my brain ever since I put, "The Poet Slave of Cuba" down. Engle's text has a kind of staying power that wordsmiths everywhere should envy. Envy and admire.

I guess I should point out that while, "The Poet Slave of Cuba" is well-written, smart, and beautiful, it is not a pleasant book to read. Teens who pick up this book should be informed right off the bat as to what the book consists of. Just the same, it's definitely one of the more honest treatises on slavery I've ever had the chance to read. Engle does a magnificent job with her subject. She does the man's memory proud.

How would you feel if your former master, who had loved you and cared for you like you were her own child, had said that once she died, you and your family would be free. Happy, right? Well what if no one paid any attention and you were sold to another master who punishes you for crimes you didn't commit?

That is the dilemma Juan Fransisco Manzano faces when his former owner, who took him to parties and had him wow her guest with his uncanny ability to recite poems and verses from the bible. At his baptism, Dona Beatriz, his former owner, declares that once she dies, he and his family will be free, for the price of 300 pesos, and any new-born babies will be born free. But once Dona Beatriz dies, Juan's family discovers they don't have enough money to buy Juan's freedom. So he is sold to La Marquesa De Prado Amendo, whose son, Don Nicolas, takes a liking to Juan, and befriends him. But La Marquesa frequently and brutally punishes Juan for sneaking peaks at her books. But she is grateful enough to let Juan watch her sons take art classes, and Don Nicholas gives Juan some parchment and a stub of crayon to draw with. Eventually, Don Nicholas helps give Juan the courage to run away, and Juan flees in search of his mother.

In really enjoyed this book for three reasons: the poetry, the character development, and the Spanish vocabulary sprinkled into the text.

The first reason I liked this book was in was written in free verse poetry form. This made the book very quick and easy to read, which made me like it more. It was also very unique, and was very well done.

The second reason I liked this book was the character development, mainly Juan. He grows up a lot in the book, from age eleven to age sixteen. But he also develops, by not abiding to La Marquesa's rules or caring about the consequences. He also learns that he doesn't need to keep sneakily buying pen and paper using the money he receives at parties. He can just store all the knowledge in his head.

And finally, I enjoyed the Spanish vocabulary sprinkled in. I take Spanish class on B days and found that the Spanish words were very useful. I also like how the author used in text definitions to explain to you what the word was.

In conclusion, I thought this was a fabulous book and would recommend it to someone looking for either a book written in poetry of a book with Spanish sprinkled into the text.

Engle beautifully captures the life of Juanito, a Cuban slave with a talent and passion for words
By Latinxs in Kid Lit
In The Poet Slave of Cuba: A Biography of Juan Francisco Manzano, Margarita Engle beautifully captures the life of Juanito, a slave in Cuba with a talent and passion for words. Juanito is smart. He can memorize verses, songs, plays simply by listening. He can then recite them off the top of his head. His owner, Doña Beatriz, keeps him as an entertaining pet. The other slave owners call him the “Golden Beak” because of his amazing ability to recite from memory. After Doña Beatriz dies, Juanito is given to La Marquesa de Prado Ameno, a woman who does not find him amusing and is instead bent on punishing him. Juanito’s family is given freedom, but he remains enslaved. The violence he endures eventually forces him to escape. Throughout all the time, Juanito’s love for words never wavered, but instead, he taught himself to read and write.

Juan Francisco Manzano’s biography in verse is an important contribution to the retelling of Latin American history. At first, his owners found his recitations entertaining because they did not believe that he understood what he repeated, but eventually Manzano learned the power of words and would construct his own poems and stories. However, this new understanding of words led to many years of physical and emotional abuse. Engle does not romanticize slavery in this text. Her verses help readers feel Juanito’s innocence and his genuine interest for words. At the same time, Engle’s verses feel painful when Juanito gets whipped. Juanito’s life story is told through the voices of those in his life. The different voices paint a bigger picture of Juanito’s life. His mother’s death is more sorrowful, for example, because their voices formed a part in telling Juanito’s story. Engle’s verses are accompanied by artwork by Sean Qualls. There is something about the art that is also beautiful and sad.

The Poet Slave of Cuba broaches the subject of slavery in Latin America unlike any other text I’ve come across in Latinx children’s and young adult literature. Engle’s verses helps put a human face to those who were oppressed, abused, and killed by slavery. Through her verses, Engle has immortalized Manzano’s story, and, at least in this one way, readers of this text can begin or continue to have conversations about slavery in Latin America.

Chapter One
How This Cow Sold HerselfWhy buy the cow when you canget the milk for free?—MY MOTHER (AND EVERYONE ELSE’S)Marriage can be wonderful. It is a historic, sacred institution that provides security, respectability, tax breaks, and regular nookie. Every culture from Africa to Antarctica embraces it. It means always having a date for Valentine’s Day other than Ben and Jerry. It is proof of your commitment, a public statement that you love and are loved in return. Hey, dozens of animals (for example, beavers, bald eagles... even pigeons in the park) know how great it is to mate for life. Surely if a bird that drinks from puddles and eats trash knows the value of marriage, we all should!Overall, happily married people are healthier, accumulate more wealth, and get a chance at the good life. So, of course you want to get married and you can’t understand why your boyfriend is unsure. You are thinking: If we get hitched, we get to make long- term plans with each other. We get fluffy new towels and a waffle iron. I get to have a big white wedding and make all my friends wear unflattering dresses to get back at them for the hideous peach things I had to wear at their weddings. I get to be the center of attention for a day and the center of his world for a lifetime.Once upon a time, I too set out to convince my boy friend that it was the right time to marry me, to finally buy this cow. With all that free milk, he had become fat and confused. But I’m really quite good at getting a guy to pay for something that was once as free to him as the silverware at Denny’s. If you think about it, this requires profound skill. You wouldn’t suddenly start paying for samples of Kirkland- brand cocktail wieners at Costco. If they charged, you would complain to the manager and hunt for free hot dogs elsewhere. You have a major challenge in front of you if you want to get your boyfriend moving on the proposal, but as long as you’re confident that he is the one, I am here to help you.I was once right where you are, feeling the same things you are feeling, and I pushed for marriage and strategized. It wasn’t that my man was unsure about me or didn’t recognize the economic benefit of having other people buy us an espresso machine; rather, he just wasn’t in a great hurry. I initiated talks about marriage, but months passed. I initiated talks about engagement, but the only proposals I witnessed were on YouTube. He repeatedly said that he understood what I wanted and it was coming. He offered no formal excuse for stalling, but talked to me about the need for perfect timing. I had visions of toddling down the aisle, leaning on a walker and trying desperately not to break my hip. Marriage was notcoming according to myperfect timing. My man really wanted me to move in with him long before we got engaged. He wanted me to quit my job, change cities, and basically squeeze out all my precious milk for a prospective customer. My first realization was that doing this would not get me hitched any faster. I remained firmly planted in my city but promised him that once we got engaged, I’d always be around to proofread his work reports and fold his socks into neat little balls.I credit my husband-catching success to always speaking openly about my expectations and withholding most of my milk until I got exactly what I wanted. In other words, I followed some wise, age-old advice. Since gas started to cost a fortune and milk became free, all the rules of driving and dating appear to have changed. Today you are supposed to fool around in the backseat of a fuel-efficient car, perhaps a Mini Cooper or a Prius. If the world is such a different place now, why does the expression “Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?” still hold true? Well, dating practices may change but human nature does not. Luxury product makers like Rolex know that the best way to make more money and to create mystique is to actually raise the price of a product and to limit the supply. What exactly do we mean by “milk”? The milk that is given out for free all over the world is not just sex (as our grandmothers understood it). Milk is any number of benefits men get from being married. These include sex on a regular basis, companionship, and a wife who gets the car inspected. You basically need to have premarital sex to play the dating game in this day and age, but how much of the rest of your milk you give away is up to you.Don’t give it all away or cheapen its value by becoming a wife before you actually have a husband; however, if you have already given too much away, you can use the tactics in this book to reclaim your power. It doesn’t matter if you live with a man or three thousand miles away from him. Remember that there is no shame in going after what you want or using tactics to achieve a goal. You do this every day in business and in your personal life, and any tools you learn here can be applied to a myriad of life situations. Business tactics win money and power, psychological tactics win hearts and minds, and military tactics win battles. Getting-him-to-propose tactics win husbands. If you hate thinking of yourself as a cow with a milk supply of sex, companionship, and support to give away, get over it now. All of this is just a funny way to think about a very real problem. Also, get over the idea that pushing for marriage is somehow beneath you. I too worried that it was antifeminist to want marriage so much, and unromantic or manipulative to “wear him down.” Well, does feminism say that you should be powerless in your personal life? That you should kick butt at work but be passive at home? Does feminism somehow advocate that life- altering events be solely the man’s decision? Does talking a guy into an institution that will make him healthier, wealthier, and happier seem wrong? Hell no. After getting over my initial concerns, I finally learned how to get what I desired, and the goal here is to teach you everything I learned. The Get-Your-Man-to-Marry-You Plan presented here is perfect for you if you are in a long-term relationship or may find yourself in one in the next few years. Given the fact that the average American male is more afraid of commitment than of a twelve- month tour in Iraq, even if you are single now, you need to know this stuff. In general, a boyfriend is reluctant to begin what he sees as his lemminglike march to the sea of tulle, rice kernels, and pain. Your relationship may be solid, but he is just not in the same hurry you are. You feel the biological clock ticking, or you see your friends getting settled and registering for gravy boats, or you want to buy a condo. Unlike Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn, whom you adore, you are conventional and would rather have children in wedlock. Your man loves you, but is just not keen on change. You, of course, are not trying to manipulate him into doing something that isn’t good for him; you are just showing the guy who loves the status quo like he loves a steak or a flat-screen TV, that marriage is not so scary. The National Marriage Project at Rutgers University surveyed men and reported that 94 percent of married guys are happier being hitched than being single. Men flourish in marriage, and don’t you want to help him flourish? My tactics to trigger a proposal can help everyone, but you should be careful to pick and choose which ones you use if your boyfriend is not serious about you or, alternatively, your boyfriend is extremely serious and is about to propose. You shouldn’t start to push really hard just to shave a few weeks off the wait. Also, you must select tactics based on the unique personality of your man. All men are not the same, and any dating book that gives you a list of universal truths about men is full of it. This attitude is dangerous (not to mention stupid) and can lead you to try tactics that can backfire. So, evaluate and modify each potential tactic to speak specifically to him. This plan offers some general rules on human nature, but there are always exceptions. There are even situations in which the “what not to do” moves can actually work to your advantage. Men are complex creatures (note that “complex” can refer to anything with a brain larger than a golf ball). You know your guy better than anyone, so don’t doubt your instincts. The plan also requires that you be willing to play tough. If while trying the tactics you discover that he won’t recant his antimarriage position, you have to be willing to walk. If you can continue indefinitely as Smithers to his Monty Burns rather than move on, then these tactics are not right for you. You must be committed enough to becoming his wife to risk becoming his ex-girlfriend. Men—like women—do want to get married eventually, but men would also keep us waiting for de cades if they could. It is important to remember that society teaches men and women very different lessons about marriage, and we are socialized from a young age. You are up against very powerful social influences here. Let me explain. When we are around five years old, both boys and girls go to Disneyland. Once at the park, girls learn that the primary concern of every beautiful fairy princess is to land a handsome prince. Boys, on the other hand, learn that you can keep millions of people waiting for hours just by winding a long line around various distractions and curves. By extension, boys realize that girls will hang out forever if they think that the prize (i.e., marriage) is just around the corner. As we grow up, the Disney lessons remain. You desperately want a husband, and he knows exactly how to keep you waiting in line as you fry in the sun, hoping to get on the damn ride.If you pick tactics wisely and be strong, this plan will help you avoid all the waiting. The advice shared here is based on the common, horse sense of my strong Russian grandmothers who, during the war years, managed to score numerous husbands because so many of the men died. Also, the anecdotes in this book are loosely based on m...

This is a trap!
By Rachel
It's sounds like a great book! It's not. It's poorly written and just a clever ploy to get a desperate woman's money.
I suggest you try the book "His Cold Feet". I had tons better luck with that book.

Ehh...
By Rhaiyne
This book had some good advice, mostly just about applying some good common sense. I liked the play-by-play situational advice, but it didn't really help me or give me anything new. I've been working on this "plan" for awhile now so maybe it would have been more helpful earlier in my quest. As with any advice, take it with a grain of salt.

Overall, an entertaining read, not too insightful, unless as i stated above, this is the first book you will read on the subject, then by all means, enjoy!

A cowgirl's opinion
By Allison
I have never bought a self-help book, so I was a little sceptical of the author's promises to aid me in securing a marriage proposal. But her tongue-in-cheek style (and the countless dairy metaphors) had me hooked. Thankfully this book is just so much more than your average how-to: it is a witty, cleverly written and well-researched piece that, surprise, surprise, is actually a page turner! Uscher-Pines has an uncanny ability to render the maze of marriage proposal-making into more of a map. Rarely have I read a relationship book that strips such a monumental subject of its romantic trappings to provide the reader with a refreshingly pragmatic approach to taking a relationship to the next level. The book takes you step-by-step through the ABCs and the do's and don'ts of marriage proposal-making (or proposal-getting, depending on how you view it). I found myself turning the pages in anticipation, seeking answers to when it is appropriate to broach the subject of marriage, dissecting the kinds of excuses I might be faced with, and most importantly, formulating the approaches I can use to counter these excuses. It was empowering to read the stories of other women who helped to shape their own matrimonial destiny. While I don't agree with all of the author's points, this book provoked me to some much needed self-retrospection about the choices I need to make in my own relationship, especially with regards to making this limbo period as enjoyable as possible for both parties involved. Women who read this book will be left with the important message of the necessity of walking the walk on the road to getting engaged and not just talking the talk. Above all, the book had me laughing from cover to cover, and who knows, if I apply the author's advice, it might just have me beaming down the aisle a lot sooner than I thought possible.

For those who don't read the author's blogs, this was previously published as Erotic Interludes. McCray has changed the names of the characters for the first story, but everything else is the same.

The stories are HOT, HOT, HOT! But I'm glad I checked and realized I already had the 'first' edition.

Total Surrender
By mnix
"Sweet Surrender"

Sheila has been in love with her boss, Adamo Tassoni, for years. In love and speechless whenever he is near, Sheila fantasizes about being with him. When he sells the company and is not longer her boss, she is heartbroken at not seeing him any longer. When he tells her goodbye and she responds with what she thinks is a stupid answer, Sheila is mortified and sad. The man she loves, she will never see again and to her, that just isn't fair. When she gets home and a package is waiting for her, she dreams that it is coming from Adam. When her dream becomes a reality and Adam is waiting for her, Sheila wants to pinch herself. She does one thing better - she submits to the man of her dreams.

"Sweet Surrender" has been revamped and reedited and is just as wonderful now as it was when released by Ellora's Cave. Sheila's submission to Adam was breathtaking to watch and I could feel the emotional ties each felt for the other. The limo scene has yet to leave my mind and Sheila's surrender was oh so sweet.

"Wicked Surrender"

Looking forward to spending an erotic weekend surrendering control, Andi Kelly feels free. She is at an exclusive resort called, "The Bondage Club" to relax and have fun. When she spots a Dom talking to a sub and realizes he looks familiar she gasps and looks closer. The man she sees? One of her coworkers, Derrick Macintyre, and he is headed her way. Derrick has sexy Andi Kelly right where he wants her. And he wants her - submitting and under his control.

I love when coworkers aren't what they seem. In "Wicked Surrender", Andi and Derrick have to get along at work and are equals. At The Bondage Club, however, Derrick is the Dom and Andi is the sub and that is exactly what she needs. Each are attracted to the other but neither expect love. Passions reign high in their love scenes and I blushed more than once at Andi's "Wicked Surrender" to Derrick.

"Forbidden Surrender"

Corporate lawyer Teri Carter has spent so much time traveling from assignment to assignment that she can't even remember the last time she was with a man. Deciding enough is enough, she dresses to kill and heads to the hotel bar to scope out the men. Her secret fantasy is submitting to a stranger and she sees the perfect man. When that very man arrives at her table and proceeds to rock her world, Teri doesn't care how dangerous he could be. She wants him to show her exactly what it means to surrender, no matter how taboo or forbidden.

Oh my. "Forbidden Surrender" is one firecracker of a novella! Josh Williams, the hero of the story made me sweat. He was sexy and Dominant and I absolutely loved everything about him. Teri's surrender at his hands was intense and highly erotic. While neither thought beyond what would happen after their one night together, I love how Ms. McCray ultimately tied their live together.

Total Surrender is an amazing compilation of three naughty and risqué novellas by C. McCray. Craftily written and totally sizzling, these novellas rocked my world and made me blush. Nothing is too taboo in Total Surrender and I loved it!

I usually enjoy reading BDSM stories for a change of pace but for me the Hotness factor quickly diminished due to a lack of romance in these 3 stories. I found most of the sex scenes brutal rather than sexy and though these guys stated they "loved" these women, I did not feel the love. The way the guys got off on "punishing" these new trainees to the BDSM world just came of as demeaning rather than hot. Personally I think something is wrong with a guy Alpha or not who thinks he needs to punish a woman because she made him "hot for her" with a glance. To me this is not sexy, it smells of insecure male ego.

I'll stick to the writings of Maya Banks, Lora Leigh, & Jaci Burton for my step on the wild side. I need a bit of romance to go along with the hard core sex to keep it from seeming so cold and brutal.
