On the first day of school, Artie falls out of his bed and hits his head. Hard. He tells his mom he's dizzy and she says, "You're just worried about your first day in a new school."

At breakfast, his little brother, Eddie, splashes syrup in his hair, and there's no time to wash it. Artie has to go to school with syrup-hair. And then, on the way there, he gets splashed by a puddle that makes him look like he wet his pants. It's not just the first day of school; it's the worst day of school.

On the second day of school, Artie falls out of bed and hits his head. Hard. He tells his mom he's dizzy and she says, "You're just worried about your first day in a new school."

Huh? Today is just like the day before. Can Artie find a way to change it, before it's the first day of school…forever?

Review

“Stine takes the normal anxieties of childhood--in this case, the first day at a new school--and blends exaggerated humor with a few equally exaggerated moments of horror in a fast and goofy romp. Lots of fun for Stine fans.” ―Booklist

“As usual, Stine delivers the hilarity and horror that readers love, and his mastery of sustaining mood will not disappoint. The humor and descriptive first, first day of school allow for faster pacing in the subsequent days, and kids will love the twist at the end.” ―School Libary Journal

“Stine's signature blend of horror and humor, combined with an unexpected ending, offers a fresh view on a familiar idea.” ―ABC New York

“The genuinely scary encounters in Ardmore's basement will get kids racing through the pages. And the surprising twist in the end provides the just right explanation for it all.” ―ReadKiddoRead.com

“R. L. Stine, author of the Goosebumps series, brings his unique blend of storytelling, suspense, humor and horror to It's the First Day of School . . . Forever! . . . . Stine's many fans will not be disappointed in this book, and anyone who likes mysteries, humor or scary books will enjoy it as well.” ―BookPage

“Stine excels in describing events every school child fears. His young fans will find this one a satisfying read.” ―TeensReadToo.com

“A preteen horror take on Groundhog Day . . . . Great fun as ever, supplied by genre's most prolific and reliable master.” ―Kirkus

“Blending comedy with his trademark brand of bestselling horror, Stine's take on a Groundhog Day–style premise stars a fifth grader stuck reliving his disastrous first day at a new school.… There's some expected repetition as Artie's day replays, but Stine's embellishments--including plenty of chapter cliffhangers and a twist ending--keep things wickedly funny (Artie is a ready source of quips and one-liners) and increasingly ghoulish (on the second go-round, the dog bites the principal's hand; later, he bites the hand off). After bearing witness to the injuries, humiliations, and terrors that Artie faces, even readers' toughest days at school will feel like a breeze.” ―Publishers Weekly

“Intriguing and well written, this nightmare inducing novel will appeal to any fan of the Goosebumps series of books.” ―Danielle Williams, Children's Literature

From It’s the First Day of School . . . Forever:

I started to climb the stone steps that led to the white double doors at the entrance. I was halfway up when I recognized the man in the brown suit at the top.

He was Mr. Jenks, the principal. I’d met him when Mom and Dad brought me to see my new school for the first time. He was shaking hands and greeting every student.

“Artie, hello,” he said. He reached out and shook my hand. I smelled peppermint on his breath. “Welcome to Ardmore.”

I was nearly through the front door when I heard a commotion behind me.  Kids shouted.  A dog barked.  “Huh?” I spun around and instantly recognized the big dog racing up the stairs.  “Wowser?”  Oh no. he followed me to school.  “Wowser—down!” I shouted.  But the dog never listens to me.  I watched helplessly as the giant monster dog—my giant monster dog—tretched onto his hind legs. Leaped onto Mr. Jinks. Licked the principal’s face. Pawed his shoulders, leaving big mud stains all over.

Then I heard a loud RRRRIPPPP as Wowser tore the jacket pocket right off the principal’s brown suit.

Mr. Jenk’s face turned bright red. “Artie,” he said softly. “Is this your dog?”

The masterful, and scary, R. L. Stine plays off of first day of school fears to make this novel come alive
By KidsReads
Summer break is winding down, and the last thing you want to think about is the dreaded first day of school. Instead of the beach, endless hours of freedom, and crazy adventures, you're stuck with homework, boring teachers, and picking fights with the school bully. All of this can only be worse if you're at a brand new school where you feel lost, friendless and hopeless. For Artie Howard, this is just the beginning of a nightmare that he will have to live over and over again.

The morning on the first day of school couldn't go any worse for Artie. He bangs his head after falling out of bed, drips syrup all over his hair and t-shirt, and looks like he peed his pants after getting splashed by a truck while walking to school. When he finally makes it to school, his dog tackles the principal, he hits the most popular kid, Brick, in the back of the head with a baseball, and ends up in the wrong classroom. As if that wasn't enough, he flings the class scorpion out of the window, discovers a scary basement room filled with corpses, and manages to offend the most beautiful girl in the world. The only thing Artie wants is for this horrible day to end.

The first day of school --- take two. Artie bangs his head after falling out of bed and proceeds to have an argument about whether or not it's the first day of school with his mother. He watches in disbelief as syrup is splattered all over his t-shirt and hair. He desperately tries to avoid getting splashed by the truck, but still manages to look like he peed his pants. His dog attacks the principal, the most popular kid in school, Brick, is still injured by a baseball, and, well, you see the pattern developing. Despite his best efforts, Artie's first day of school is nightmarish all over again.

The first day of school --- take three. After banging his head in the morning and arguing with his mother about whether or not it's the first day of school, Artie is determined not to make the same mistakes. No matter how hard he tries, though, he can't stop the horrible chain of events that is now his life. After his dog rips off the principal's hand and drags around the bloody appendage, Artie realizes something is much worse about his third first day of school. It's about to get even weirder, and there's nothing Artie can do to stop it!

We've all had nightmares about the first day of school and all the horrible things that can go wrong. In my dreams I usually forget to wear my pants, leave all my school supplies at home, and end up getting on the bad side of the teacher. The good news is that we all eventually wake up, relieved that none of it is true. The masterful --- and scary --- R.L. Stine plays off of these fears and makes them come to life. Poor Artie Howard. The kid just can't catch a break. By the time you're done reading, you'll be glad that it's him instead of you.

Not SO Horrific -- A Fun School Story
By Jennifer Donovan
The movie Groundhog Day and Wendy Mass' book 11 Birthdays have each tackled the topic of one day happening over and over, so this book by R.L. Stine does not start with a wholly original topic, but he does put a unique spin on the idea, as 6th-grader Artie not only faces the first day of school over and over, but the first day of school as the new kid.

He's plagued by all the things that concern kids across the nation on the first day of school: what to wear, who to eat with at lunch, which desk to sit in, how to navigate the school, how to avoid getting into trouble. Unfortunately, even if he's trying to avoid it, trouble is coming for him. He gets off on a bad foot with the principal when his dog follows him to school and for breaking the dress code by wearing a hat.

Artie is pretty lovable. You have to root for this kid who is trying to do everything right, but ends up doing everything wrong, even when he's lived through it once or twice!

The bulk of the book is taken up with the telling of the first first day, but I still wondered how he would keep it fresh as the same events repeated themselves. Well, he did. Artie's observations and strategies on the subsequent days add life and humor to the story, and of course, there are the zombies.

Zombies? That's right, this is R.L. Stine after all. I was never a Goosebumps reader, so this was my first exposure to him, and I was thinking that this was a pretty normal school story for someone who was supposed to be the master of horror for little ones, until the zombies and giant scorpions appeared. In truth, the zombies aren't really all that terrifying or gross. Maybe it's because it seems less real due to the repetition of the story.

I wondered how the story was going to resolve, and I was impressed with Stine's creative explanation that is likely to sit well with most kids in this age group. I'm glad that I was able to check out this book, read in a simple straight-forward way by Matthew Brown. If my son wanted to read more of R.L. Stine's books, I don't think I'd stop him, but this was definitely a good place to start.
