The Long Song: A Novel, by Andrea Levy

Finalist for the 2010 Man Booker Prize

The New York Times Book Review Notable Book of the Year

In her follow-up to Small Island, winner of the Whitbread Book of the Year Award and the Orange Prize for Fiction, Andrea Levy once again reinvents the historical novel. Told in the irresistibly willful and intimate voice of Miss July, with some editorial assistance from her son, Thomas, The Long Song is at once defiant, funny, and shocking. The child of a field slave on the Amity sugar plantation in Jamaica, July lives with her mother until Mrs. Caroline Mortimer, a recently transplanted English widow, decides to move her into the great house and rename her "Marguerite." Together they live through the bloody Baptist War and the violent and chaotic end of slavery. An extraordinarily powerful story, "The Long Song leaves its reader with a newly burnished appreciation for life, love, and the pursuit of both" (The Boston Globe).

From Publishers Weekly
A distinctive narrative voice and a beguiling plot distinguish Levy's fifth novel (after Orange Prize–winning Small Island). A British writer of Jamaican descent, Levy draws upon history to recall the island's slave rebellion of 1832. The unreliable narrator pretends to be telling the story of a woman called July, born as the result of a rape of a field slave, but it soon becomes obvious that the narrator is July herself. Taken as a house slave when she's eight years old, July is later seduced by the pretentiously moralistic English overseer after he marries the plantation's mistress; his clergyman father has assured him that a married man might do as he pleases. Related in July's lilting patois, the narrative encompasses scenes of shocking brutality and mass carnage, but also humor, sometimes verging on farce. Levy's satiric eye registers the venomous racism of the white characters and is equally candid in relating the degrees of social snobbery around skin color among the blacks themselves, July included. Slavery destroys the humanity of everyone is Levy's subtext, while the cliffhanger ending suggests (one hopes) a sequel. (May)

From Bookmarks Magazine
Before opening a book on slavery, many readers must brace themselves, knowing from past experience the emotional toll it is likely to take. The Long Song, however, strikes an altogether different tone from that of Toni Morrison's Beloved (1987) or Marlon James's The Book of Night Women (HHHH May/June 2009). Peppered with humor and her trademark wit, Levy's fifth novel paints "a vivid and persuasive portrait of Jamaican slave society" (New York Times) that is highly readable and rarely depressing. Only the Miami Herald critic disagreed, describing some characters as "caricatures" and the author's light tone as ill-conceived. Still, most agreed with the Boston Globe's assessment that "[t]hrough all her trials July's joie de vivre shines."

From Booklist
In the inexplicable absence of a definitive and revelatory history of Jamaica’s nearly 300 years of slavery, Levy gamely steps into the void with the lively and engaging novel of Miss July, a slave born on the ironically named Amity sugar plantation. The mulatto child of a black slave and her white overseer, July’s destiny was that of a canefield laborer until Caroline Mortimer took over the plantation upon the death of her brother. Renamed the more genteel “Marguerite,“ July is promoted to the manor house, which brings her into contact with the new overseer, Robert Goodwin. More liberal than his lusty predecessors, Robert not only fails to abuse July, he also falls in love with her. Yet when the institution of slavery is abolished by royal decree, Goodwin’s attempts to gainfully employ his former slaves end tragically for all concerned. Charming, alarming, Levy’s vibrant historical novel shimmers with all the artifice and chicanery slave owners felt compelled to exert. --Carol Haggas

The Horrors of Slavery
By LH422
The horrors of chattel slavery are described in stark relief in Levy's fictional life story of a nineteenth-century Jamaican woman. Miss July, born into slavery, lives through some of Jamaica's most tumultuous events: warfare, emancipation, and the difficult transition to free labor. Miss July has endured more tragedy than most modern readers can comprehend: pulled away from her mother as a child, only to see her mother executed in the wake of a slave rebellion, Miss July's own child is given away. Ultimately Miss July finds herself in love with a dangerous white man. This book brings the horrors and brutality of slavery into full relief. It also shows how slave ownership corrupts slave owners, as we see two Britons become slave masters. This book is an accomplished family epic. It is a novel deep with emotion, and one that recreates a thoroughly believable nineteenth-century Jamaica. This is a world of tremendous violence and exploitation, yet one in which we still see tremendous human tenderness.

Well Written But Treads Little New Ground
By Richard Pittman
Writing a book set on a plantation with the dominant backdrop of slavery is a difficult thing to do. The reason is because this backdrop has been used many times by some brilliant novelists. Levy's challenge was to make something unique. Did she succeed? I think she did to some degree though Long Song certainly suffers by comparison to other novels of its ilk.

Most novels of slavery are set in the American South but this one is set in Jamaica. That's a distinguishing factor but not one that really makes much of a difference. She writes a strong lead character in July who is a "mulatto" who draws the positive attention of the mistress of the plantation. July is basically a good person but certainly, as you would expect, has no love for the white captors nor does she show appreciation that she is "relatviely" well treated. The first half of the book tells of July and how she came to draw the attention of the mistress of the plantation.

In the second half of the book, July has a love affair with the new Plantation Master who tries to be a good, open minded man but ultimately deteriorates into a man who expects the gratitude of the slaves. July loves him and he loves her and they work out an arrangement that satisfies for awhile but predictably ends terribly. The second half of the book focuses on the relationships and the unravelling of their lives on the island. It is much stronger than the first half of the book.

This is a very competently written, well researched story that is a relatively quick read. I recommend it but can't help but compare it to "The Confessions Of Nat Turner", "Beloved", "The Book of Negroes" etc. It doesn't really stand up in comparison to those superior works.

It is on the 2010 Man Booker Prize Long List and I expect it will also make the Short List and has an outside shot at claiming the prize.

A Bittersweet Symphony
By Kristen Stewart
The Long Song is the first work I've read by Orange Prize recipient Andrea Levy, and it lived up to my expectations. A historical novel set in early 19th century Jamaica, Levy writes from deep research but with liveliness and passion. In telling the life story of a former slave named Miss July, it has a unique and interesting voice that is memorable, at the least. Stylistic quirks of this sort are either a huge boon to a book or a ball and chain, and in The Long Song, it works.

As Miss July writes her memoirs, the reader learns about how the classes and races interacted in the decline and fall of slavery in the British empire, but in a most intimate and person way. Though Miss July faced unimaginable suffering, her fearless, humorous spirit brings a sense of levity to the story. And yet, she is not such a clown that her heartbreaking losses do not impact the reader. It is a good balance for a book readers will enjoy and relate to, and not just read out of a duty to understand slavery.

If you are looking for an intelligent, page turner to read on the beach or in the gym, I'd commend The Long Song to you. As for me, I'll be adding The Small Island, Levy's award-winning novel, to my reading list and looking forward to more from this promising author.

Review
"Good things come in small packages" would be an appropriate summary of this short but rich, versatile, and very accessible book. It is a treasury of data, theoretical insights, and practical tools offered as contributions toward the creation of good places to grow old.

Current Anthropology

"A leader of aging, disability, and community based in Indiana, Stafford contributes only slightly, he says, to fuller discussions elsewhere about how American suburbs will have to be retrofitted for the elderly. His main concern is about the places older people call home, about homemaking in a sense of dwelling and belonging rather than cooking and cleaning. Among his topics are locating old age, memory and the creation of place, aging in third places, new forms of association in old age, and design guidelines for the new elderburbia." - Reference & Research Book News

"Elderburbia couldn't be a timelier book, as planning departments across the country are in the process of evaluating the demographics and health and housing needs of their age 65 and older population." - Journal of the American Planning Association

"[O]ffers a take on getting old that gets away from the dreary options that dominate popular discourse: fade away, unloved, in a substandard nursing home or exercise hard enough, eat right enough, and save money enough to remain middle-aged up to the end. Stafford argues we should be thinking instead about the importance of place, and he takes a close look at why some places work better than others in helping elders thrive." - Indiana Alumni Magazine

"An anthropologist with a folklorist's sensibility, Phil Stafford has written a book that is unique in the literature of gerontology. Folklorists will appreciate Stafford's sensitivity to performance (formulaic speech and genre), artistry, and tradition, as well as the centrality of community and a shared history. . . . Stafford offers an especially thoughtful look at memory as a cultural resource, personal, but perhaps more importantly, shared. . . . This book contains some poignant insights into the experience of aging, particularly in the book's final chapter. . . . [I]t will speak to all of us who care deeply about our place in community, especially as we seek ways to age in place 'in its profound sense'". - Journal of Folklore Research

Trust No One, by Gregg Hurwitz

Over the past two decades, Nick Horrigan has built a quiet, safe life for himself, living as much under the radar as possible. But all of that shatters when, in the middle of the night, a SWAT team bursts into his apartment and drags him out to a waiting helicopter. A terrorist has seized control of a nuclear reactor, threatening to blow it up. And the only person he'll talk to is Nick, promising to tell Nick the truth behind the events that shattered his life twenty years ago.

At seventeen years old, Nick made a deadly mistake―one that cost his stepfather his life, endangered his mother, and sent him into hiding for years. Now what Nick discovers in that nuclear plant leaves him with only two choices: to start running again―or to fight and finally uncover the secrets that have held him hostage all these years.

As Nick peels back layer after layer of lies and deception, buffeted between the buried horrors of the past and the deadly intrigues of the present, he finds his own life―and the lives of nearly everyone he loves―at risk. And the only thing guiding him through this deadly labyrinth are his stepfather's dying words: TRUST NO ONE.

From Publishers Weekly
Hurwitz (Last Shot) blasts new life into a well-worn theme—the prominent politician trying to hide a dark incident from his past—in this intelligent thriller. Late one night, the Secret Service snatches 36-year-old Nick Horrigan, who's led a quiet life since making a fatal mistake in his teens, and whisks him to the San Onofre, Calif., nuclear plant. There a terrorist threatens to set off a bomb unless he can talk to Nick, who hasn't got the slightest idea why he's been summoned. After the terrorist gets his head blown off, Nick realizes this and subsequent events are connected to the death years earlier of his Secret Service agent stepfather. Working with his homeless pal, Homer, and his computer whiz ex-girlfriend, Induma, Nick pieces together a string of clues that point to a paternity case against either the U.S. president, Andrew Bilton, or Sen. Jasper Caruthers, Bilton's opponent in an upcoming election. While more astute readers may intuit the bad guy, Nick's ethical dilemmas, girlfriend dramas and sleuthing provide plenty of excitement. From Booklist
Each night for the last 17 years, at precisely 2:18 a.m., thirtysomething Nick Horrigan has awakened in a panicked sweat. But as this novel begins, he’s awakened instead by a SWAT team bursting into his modest Santa Monica condo. The invaders, U.S. Secret Service agents, tell him that a terrorist has entered a nuclear power plant and is threatening to blow it up unless he gets to speak to Nick. In minutes, he’s in a helicopter on his way to meet a man he’s never heard of, and he learns that the terrorist is not a terrorist at all. It’s a slam-bang beginning to a fast-paced thriller that involves two presidential candidates, bent Secret Service agents, Bulgarian thugs-for-hire, a handful of murders, and, eventually, the reason Nick wakes up at 2:18 a.m. The scope of the book’s plot is too circuitous and elaborate to detail, but the page-to-page suspense and the breakneck pacing will please Hurwitz’s growing audience. --Thomas Gaughan

Review

“A performance worthy of applause...Hurwitz's carefully interwoven plot lines and taut writing, as well as his pulsing descriptions of Los Angeles, make for a deeply satisfying read...” ―Kirkus (Starred Review) on The Crime Writer

“The plot has more twists and turns than Mulholland Drive...Hurwitz's insights about L.A. life sound knowing and are often ruefully funny...Crime fans looking for something different will love this one.” ―Booklist on The Crime Writer

“Hurwitz has the literary background to infuse his stories with an intelligence that is a welcome complement to the pulse-pounding action...” ―Chicago Sun Times on Last Shot

“To open a new Gregg Hurwitz is to brace yourself for a bravura style and an out of the ordinary ride to an unexpected destination... TRUST NO ONE begins with a Hurwitz burst... It's at once completely contemporary and a classic quest.” ―Barbara Peters, Poisoned Pen Bookstore

Awesome Suspense and Twists
By Mel Odom
Do NOT start Gregg Hurwitz's new novel Trust No One at the end of a long day when you have to get back up early the next morning. This is the only warning you get.

Hurwitz is a good writer, dependable for action and intrigue. I've read his novels and his comic book and I always find myself flipping through the pages till I reach the end of whatever story he's spieling. I loved last year's offering, The Crime Writer, which, like Trust No One, is a stand-alone novel. His Tim Rackley books are great, but I really enjoy the way Hurwitz can twist characters and plots till you're not sure who's doing what to whom. Or sometime what's really at stake.

In this book, there are a lot of things at stake. The main character gets woken up in the middle of the night by a Secret Service team that yanks him away and doesn't give him a choice. He doesn't know what's going on, and the event immediately reminds him of the last time he crossed paths with the Secret Service.

Nineteen years ago, at the tender age of seventeen, Nick Horrigan was forced to leave town or be arrested for the murder of his stepfather, a decorated Secret Service agent. Nick's own father was irresponsible and left the family, but Nick idolized him anyway. In a few short chapters, though, Hurwitz makes us care a lot about his stepfather.

Past and present converge in an explosive encounter that leaves one man dead, and with Nick delivering the murder weapon. The action picks up even from this breathtaking beginning and hammered me to the pages. The first night I admit that I started the book late. I should have known better. I read until I went blind that night, simply couldn't make out any of the words on the page anymore.

I got up the next morning and marched through the rest of the book without breaking stride. Hurwitz has created a thoroughly enjoyable potboiler involving powerful politics played out against a lethal background of secrets. There are a lot of twists and turns in the book, and every time I seemed to figure an event out, or get to where I could predict how a character would act, Hurwitz threw another curveball into the mix. I enjoyed the relationship Nick has with his mother, her new husband, and her stepdaughter. I especially liked the scene with Induma, his ex-girlfriend.

Hurwitz writes really tight, driving dialogue and I found myself blistering through the scenes at a frantic pace. With the first-person narrative, he's able to delve deeply into the characters and make me feel like I was carrying Nick Horrigan's burden part of the way with him, and I rooted for the character from page one.

So, do pick this book up for sheer entertainment, but do block out the time to read it. Hurwitz grabs you by the throat with this one, and he doesn't let go till he's finished with you.

Looney Tunes
By Gary Griffiths
OK, lot's of strong reviews on this one, but at the risk of alienating some fans, Gregg Hurwitz's "Trust No One" falls short on several levels - yet another run of the mill government conspiracy theory fantasy lacking depth, substance, and credibility. But to give credit where due, Hurwitz keeps a brisk pace, action trumping intellect, and if the political rants are simple minded and stereotyped, the author at least pulls a couple well-telegraphed twists to maintain some semblance of ambiguity.

Nick Horrigan is a benign character - a thirty-something recently-resigned worker for a non-profit, barely making enough to keep the Cartoon Network running on his cable TV. But Nick's docile life overdoses on adrenaline when a bunch of SWAT thugs bust into his apartment, hauling him off to a SoCal nuclear plant to defuse a terrorist who will only speak to Nick. Nick has no idea who this politically correctly-named "Mike Milligan" terrorist is, but before LA is reduced to a Chernobyl-like waste land, Nick's made Mike's connection to his Secret Service step dad, murdered nearly two decades earlier under circumstances for which Nick has since blamed himself. Predictably, Nick finds himself tangled in a Byzantine hodgepodge of politics and conspiracy, with the help of a bum and his former girlfriend fending off the best of the elite secret operatives of the United States has to offer.

Hurwitz's tale of Nick's quest to find the truth of his step dad's demise suffers from thinly drawn characters and pedestrian prose ("The silence was what told me I had finished talking." That, and your lips not moving, I guess). But mainly, it takes total suspension of belief to buy the preposterous chain of events, and the ease in which a social worker instantly transforms to a steely eyed operative, outsmarting Senators and Presidents and multiple three-letter agencies, bringing the mighty and powerful to their knees. The same black helicopter crowd that believes the same government that can't run a railroad or a Post Office can pull off ridiculously convoluted covers-ups, while apparently having no problem accepting that a kid and his drunken homeless buddy can outmaneuver the evil feds.

A couple hundred pages in, Nick observes, "You try getting wrapped up in a government conspiracy. It can wear a person down." Exactly.

hugely disappointing
By Avid Reader
I bought this book because the sample download was interesting and exciting. The rest of the book fell very short. Part of the problem may be that the author tried to stuff too many plot threads into the book. Also, he was unable to maintain the excitment of the first couple of chapters and it became something that I just had to slog through. And finally, I'm pretty sure the author considers the ending to be a surprise, but it was telegraphed throughout the book.

I gave it 2 stars rather than 1 because the beginning was good.

New Trends and Developments in African Religions (Contributions in Afro-American and African Studies), by Peter Clarke

African religions, as well as those religions that derive much of their cosmology, beliefs, and rituals from African religions, are becoming more international in scope and appeal. Yet they continue to be viewed either as indiscriminately adaptable or as static traditions. Neither view suggests much spiritual or psychological value outside their original milieu when compared with the so-called world religions.

The chapters in this volume focus on African and African-derived religions, and challenge many of these positions. They examine how these religions display themselves in the contemporary world, particularly in the Americas, the Caribbean, and Europe. These religions' continued dynamism and their relationship with other religious traditions, especially through the process of syncretism, are also explored. This multidisciplinary collection makes a major contribution not only to a better understanding of African and African-derived religions, but it also contributes to the wider and ongoing debate on syncretism that continues to engage those in anthropology, history, and sociology of religion.

Moderate depiction
By Texan d'Acadien
Parts of Lorrie's life are described in this book. It's not as in-depth as her own biography, of course. I like the description of her relationship with her Dad. It's touching. I also like the description of Tanya Tucker's early fame and how she seemed to overshadow Lorrie - although Lorrie had more Opry experience under her belt at the time. Lorrie's pretty awesome. This book tells of that.

Diogenes of Sinope: The Man in the Tub (Contributions in Philosophy (Hardcover)), by Luis Navia

The life and teachings of Diogenes of Sinope, the Greek philosopher who gave rise to classical Cynicism, deserve careful consideration because of their relevance to contemporary ethical issues. The task of reconstructing the philosopher's life, however, is exceedingly difficult, because in his case, more than in those of other ancient philosophers, we must deal not only with the scarcity of reliable sources and testimonies, but also with the mountains of anecdotal and fictional accounts that are responsible for the creation of a veritable literary legend around the Cynic who once lived in a tub. This comprehensive study reconstructs his biography on the basis of classical and Arabic sources, identifies the main ideas and principles of his philosophy, and shows the application of his philosophical message for our contemporary world.

It also includes an extensively annotated translation of Diogenes Laertius' Life of Diogenes of Sinope, which is our principal source of information about the philosopher.

An important philosophy for our time.
By amc
I thoroughly recommend Diogenes of Sinope as essential reading for both Classical Greek scholars and those who simply wish to learn out more about the Cynics, their philosophy, and their way of life. Indeed, anyone who has overlooked this important philosophy. Scholarly in its approach, this book is yet compulsively readable. I was easily carried through the text which is generously peppered with fascinating anecdotes from the primary sources as well as Navia's own compelling interpretations. What better place to start an understanding of Cynicism than through its hero Diogenes.
In Chapter 4, Hegel's view that Cynicism contains little philosophy and no `system' is demolished. Navia presents the reader with a very comprehensive and systematised account of what Cynicism's philosophy is, and yet achieves this without undermining Cynicism's integrity, for instance by not leaving a trail of `truths' for some unscrupulous management theorist to claim as the latest quick fix for a failing company. At the end of this chapter, Cynicism emerges with its anti-scientific credentials intact, but also with much greater clarity about what Diogenes' brand of Cynicism stands FOR as well as what it opposes. I deliberately choose the present tense here, because what Navia demonstrates in these pages, is that (unlike the ideas of say Freud or Marx, who as one writer put it `were weighed down by the cultural baggage of their time'), Diogenes' view of the world is as fresh and relevant today as it was 2,300 years ago. The reader should be left in no doubt that Cynicism represents a very powerful philosophy, even if he or she is not inclined to share it.
Throughout the book I was impressed by passages that sent me off contemplating contemporary issues and debates, but I also appreciated the detail and minutia that conjured up vivid portraits of life at the time ~ Diogenes life in particular. The appendix of Diogenes Laertius' (not to be confused with Navia's own hero) original writings about Diogenes the Cynic is very helpful in supporting Navia's own text. What Navia has achieved cleverly in this book, is to strike a balance between producing an authoritative text which reinforces the `facts' available, while at the same time, acknowledging the myth-making that is essential for a real understanding of the Diogenes phenomenon.
Can we have a paperback edition please!

This is a good scholarsip on the information we have on Diogenes based ...
By Avinesh
Not a lot is known about Diogenes. Diogenes was an enigma, an eccentric, call him wise or just a fool depends on perspective. Even a medical syndrome is named after him reflecting his way of life and not necessarily his insight. The work of academic scholarship brings to light the information we have about him which is very scarce and often controversial. Diogenes is often cited for his cynical remarks especially the famous ones with Alexander the great. The book is not as much about his philosophies as it is about Diogenes the man, and his life and of what is known about him. This is a good scholarship on the information we have on Diogenes based on research.
