RUSSELL H. COWARD JR. is Associate Professor of Education at St. John Fisher College. He spent four years in the U.S. Air Force and taught English in Saigon, South Vietnam during the Vietnam War.

In a "Voice From the Vietnam War" Mr.Coward chronicles his formative years growing up in suburban middle class America. The concepts of democracy, communism and war were abstractions taught and intellectualized in high school and college classrooms. Like most young men of his generation, war became a reality when his government handed him a rifle and sent him off to a remote land in South East Asia.

The author relates his personal experiences during his year 'in-country' serving as an instructor of English to Vietnamese officers in what was termed the Vietnamization program. Unlike most of the other 3 million U.S. military personnel who served during the Vietnam era, he would have the opportunity to learn the language, history and culture of the Vietnamese people he would get to know so well.

Mr. Coward ably demonstrates that the lessons of war are best taught by those who experienced it. Citing the words of Robert McNamara and Daniel Ellsberg, he traces the false pretenses and assumptions which led to a military build up of almost 500,000 troups, and contributing to over 58,000 U.S. combat fatalities, and over 2 million Vietnamese civilian fatalities. Mr. Coward relates the misinformation disseminated by the White House and pentagon and speaks of the devastation caused to the people of Vietnam.

The lessons to be learned from Vietnam are strikingly relevant today; the parallels teach us we have learned little.

In the Classroom

A Voice from the Viet Nam War would serve well in the high school classroom because it suits a variety of readers. More capable readers could explore the narrator's voice, the author's choices in structuring his memoir, the contrast between this nonfiction piece and a fictional account like The Things They Carried, or the whole question of patriotism posed by the author as he looks from post WWII to post Viet Nam. Less capable readers might be encouraged to note the functions of different parts of the text, from the clear, thorough timeline to the appendices and glossary. These students might be encouraged to read sections of the book that most appeal to them or that align with concepts addressed in social studies or English class. Also, because the text interweaves personal history with national and international history, it appeals to readers drawn to emotion and those drawn to fact.

At the college level, students might read Mr. Coward's book with several different purposes in mind: to trace the emergence of a teacher; to note the effects of understanding a new culture; to learn history from a personal perspective; to watch the development of political awareness.

A Different Kind of Perspective

Russ Coward's perspective on the Vietnam War and America's involvement in it is different, and I guess that this is the reason why I couldn't put the book down until I had finished reading it. I was reminded that wars are fought on many different fronts; Coward's happened to be as an English instructor in Saigon, where people went about the daily routines of living, reminded of the violent side of war only intermittently by the muffled rumblings of explosions far off in the distance. It's this irony that held my attention. As I read I tried to imagine what this life would be like, especially knowing how the lives of some of these same people would be torn apart by the abrupt, jarring conclusion to the war. Coward's account of this side of war was so vividly told that I caught myself thinking of possible parallels in other places like, for example, Iraq today, where, I'm sure, people are using their wits just to survive from one day to the next.

Disappointing

Having enjoyed John Farris's novella, THE RANSOME WOMEN, I found in Ed McBain's anthology, TRANSGRESSIONS, I thought I'd try his best-known work, THE FURY.

THE FURY starts out well as we get to know teenagers Gillian Bellaver and Robin Sandza. They have known each other intimately in previous lives and both have incredible psychic powers. Peter Sandza, Robin's father, is the third major character.

There is an early discussion on reincarnation that I found especially stimulating. Robin compares it to a baseball game. If he plays poorly, he can always do better in the next game. Gillian's father, millionaire Avery Bellaver, is also a unique character. He is an amateur anthropologist who feels that the problem with American teenagers is that ritual is lacking in their lives.

The book deteriorates when it turns into a Tom Clancy-type thriller. Robin Sandza falls into the hands of MORG, a clandestine group similar to the CIA who plan to use his psychic powers as a secret weapon. Peter Sandza, who was once a MORG agent, fights incredible odds to get his son back. Meanwhile Gillian's psychic powers have gone awry.

The villain of the piece, MORG leader Childermass, is somewhat of a cartoon character. I couldn't find one redeeming characteristic. The last half of the novel reads a bit like an episode from THE MAN FROM UNCLE. The psychic twins don't do a whole lot with their psychic powers besides bleed people out. I would have preferred a much larger role for Avery Bellaver.

Furious Phenomena

John Farris' breakthrough bestseller holds up well, after all these years. It spawned a minor cottage industry in the film business, especially, with the "evil government psychic projects" plot. Scanners and Firestarter, and their numerous clones and offspring, were inspired by this piece. It was ahead of its time in discussing then-unknown true-life psychic spying programs, which have since been written about in quite some detail - though discussing nothing quite like what happens in this book.
Robin and Gillian are twins separated at pre-birth, reincarnated souls meant to grow up together who instead are growing up separately. Robin is the more powerful of the two, and comes to the attention of MORG, a nefarious super-secret government agency that attempts to murder Robin's CIA assassin father in order to more fully take Robin under their wing. Robin's father is mighty ticked-off about all this, and wages a private little mini-war with MORG head Childermass to get his son back. In the meantime, promising newcomer Gillian has also come to MORG's attention - and Robin's father's, as well, who wants to use her to locate his sequestered son.
Definitely one of Farris' best. Even though Farris also wrote the screenplay to the stylish Brian DePalma movie, the film is weak compared to its original source material.

Complex and frightening thriller.

John Farris hasn't gotten much recognition as a horror writer. This is the only book of his I've read, but if the rest are nearly as good as this one then he's one of the least recognized writers out there. There are quite a few things that set this book apart from the conventional horror novel, and these are the things that make this book truly horrifying. It is an extremely dense book and seems longer than its 400 page length, although it never drags. Its chock-full of intertwining characters and plot elements with lots of shocking twists. Farris isn't afraid to make us care about his characters and then subject them to horrible fates. The author's treatment of the book's main character, Peter Sandza, is especially chilling. So are the unwilling results of Gillian's special ability. The depiction of the government officials and the character Childress are quite menacing. The true relationship between Gillian and Sandza'a son is at once beautiful and unsettling. The watchable Brian De Palma film starring Kirk Douglas only scratches the surface of this solid thriller which accomplishes what few horror novels ever do: leave the reader both horrified and satisfied. If you can find this book anywhere read it at once!

Surprisingly, the daughter of the infamous gangster John Gotti is not resting on her famous name here. Instead, she has written a tightly crafted, entertaining suspense novel filled with surprising twists and turns. When union leader Joseph Sessio is murdered, Taylor Brooke, a young and beautiful district attorney, is assigned to defend Tommy Washington, the black youth accused of the crime. Feeling that Washington has been set up, Brooke begins an investigation that uncovers possible corruption in the district attorney's office and begins to doubt the loyalty of many of her colleagues. In the meantime, the murdered Sessio's son (who has not been ruled out as a suspect) has been insinuating himself into Brooke's life, although she has a haunting feeling that he is not to be trusted either. To top all of this off, she is being stalked by a murderous psychopath (her ex-husband), who is being paid by the bad guys to distract Taylor from her investigation. This book, Victoria Gotti's firt novel, is fast moving, you never get bored and you want to keep on reading even when your eyes are giving up. The charactrers are intersting and believable and the plot too realistic. You have to wonder how many innocent people have been put in situations like this without anyone to help them or anywhere to go

I read this book on a sailing vacation last summer. I wound up dropping the anchor,sitting there for five hours and reading it from cover to cover. A compelling tale of greed, lust,money and twisted family ties. Highly recommended. Victoria Gotti has made a name for herself.

This book was so good I could not put it down. I really enjoyed the plot and Taylor Brooke. I really like the book but I would have enjoyed it even more if some of the relationships were more developed.

WILLIAM H. YOUNG is a freelance writer and independent scholar. He has recently retired from teaching English, American Studies, and popular culture at Lynchburg College in Virginia for 36 years. Young has published books and articles on various subjects of popular culture.

Non-profound but interest-holding

This is a volume in the series "American Popular Culture Through History." It discusses some dozen topics as reflected by the 1930s, such as Adverising, Fashion, Food and Drink, etc. There is nothing about history except as it relates to the topics discussed. Having been a farm boy in that decade not much of what the authors talk about resonated especially with me, though I do not dispute any of the conclusions which the authors come to. It is a pleasant book but not very erudite, though obviously there was a lot of research done: the 24 page bibliography demonstates that.

Well Rounded

This book is a very well rounded glimpse into life in that era. My parents were both born in that era, so even they could not give me the little details of life at this time that this book can because they were too young to remember much. We all know from our history classes what the political climate was at that time; or the movies and movie stars that were popular, which are also touched upon. But it's interesting that the book also gives a view of advertising, teenagers, hobbies, food, architecture and other little "behind the scenes" things. I would recommend this to anyone interested in this era.
