Missing the Details

The book is written well for the most part, and for a general overview and a light read, it is entertaining. However, if you're looking for a resource in which to find information quickly, this book isn't it.

I had hoped to use this book for research into the details of daily life in Renaissance Italy, as its title suggests. Alas, these details are either not included or are hidden in the text with no way to find them easily. The index, for instance, has no entries for 'writing, 'roads,' 'furniture,' 'money,' 'trade,' 'education,' 'childbearing,' and many more items that would typically be ones a person wanting information about daily life might want to know about. The text may well contain such things, but they aren't apparent. As well, typically the information included is sparse: for instance, printing - one of the most important innovations in history, and hugely important in Venice during the 15th and 16th century - gets two pages of discussion.

Final thought: for a light entertaining overview of Renaissance life, it's fine; if you're looking for real information at your fingertips, probably not the best choice.

Fascinating

This is one of my favorites of the Daily Life's. It gives a look at a fascinating culture. It was a culture of paradoxes and complexities in which the people navigated between family and civic loyalty. Between the Code of Honor and Christian teaching. It was a culture in which new things were invented and forgotten things revived. Much of modern economic, political, and social systems were built here. And much learning that had been forgotton was recovered. It was also a time when much remained the same and many went on with their lifes perfectly unaware that they were in a renaissance.
This book covers how people from all walks of life lived and their differing experience. It shows the lifes of Princes, Patricians, Merchants, Artisans, Peasants and on and on through the many types of people that filled the life of Renaissance Italy. It shows the highly competitive society of the Renaissance Italians. It also shows the structure of families, patronage-webs and other such institutions. The demands of everyday life and on and on. It is a great book about a fascinating time.

Too abstract

After enjoying Marcus Rautman's "Daily Life in the Byzantine Empire," I had high expectations for this Renaissance volume. After reading several chapters, however, I can only say that this volume falls short. The authors' approach is oddly abstract in nature, sticking with generalizations. The sidebar anecdotes they include don't make up for the specifics and examples that should have been part of the main text. I don't feel as if I came away with a vivid picture of what daily life was really like in Renaissance Italy.

Nordstrom has done a creditable job in compiling this dictionary. There are imbalances and omissions, some excusable in a first-time, massive compendium. As a reference volume for libraries the Dictionary has considerable utility, particularly for those seeking information on the more recent history of the five Nordic countries. It covers political and royal personages quite well, except for a vacuum on Iceland; social leaders are mostly absent except for women of note. Momentous events relating to political movements, newspapers, economic trends and organizations, and social trends should have been more detailed. About the Author
Martin van Creveld was born in the Netherlands in 1946 and has lived in Israel from 1950. Having studied in Jerusalem and London, since 1971 he has been on the faculty of the History Department, the Hebrew University, Jerusalem. A specialist in military history and strategy, he is the author of 20 books, including "The Land of Blood and Honey" and "Defending Israel", and has appeared regularly on CBS, CNN and the BBC.

A great piece of military analysis

Excellent analysis of the differences in the organisation between the US and German armies during WWII, which made the German so much more efficient than the American. The main reason was the German inclination to decentralize decisions as far down as possible. Regiments were made up of soldiers from the same district in Germany, and regimental commanders decided who to train for officers, who to promote, who to decorate and who to punish. Assessments were made qualitatively, and the main qualities looked for in an officer, and a soldier, where creativity, iniative, and decisiveness. The American system was centralized, many of the best men where at home, doing numerical analysis on developments at the front. As utterly sinister as the nazi system was, the organisation of its war machine was, strangely enough, more human than the American one, and it proves valuable lessons for anyone.

Military history, and not a shot fired in this book!

Working by numbers vs working by character. That would be the short version of this book on the difference between the US Army in WWII vs the German Army.
This was the first book on military history that I read in which not a shot is fired! In this book you'll find no description of battles, operations or campaigns, it is all about the methods by which these two armies have recruited their soldiers, determined their abilities, trained them, led them, fed them, rewarded them, treated them when wounded.
There is a significant difference between the German Army going for quality, leadership, comradeship, forging a bond between soldiers in a unit and giving the commanders freedom in the way they execute their missions ('auftragstactiek')on the one hand and the American Army using mass. Mass in firepower, mass in numbers, masses of statistics, treating their soldiers like well produced pieces of interchangeable equipment with little thought for the individual qualities of the soldier. This caused a lot of human wastage in units and has (according to Van Creveld) lengthened the war somewhat.
In the German Army it forged a bond between soldiers that held even against the onslaught of 1943 - 1945 on the Eastern Front and later in the West, where German kept on fighting beyond all hope of winning the war or even winning a reasonable peace. But that fighting quality came at a price and Van Creveld mentions that price explicitly. For the German soldier it didn't matter for what cause he fought, it made formidable soldiers without much of a conscience.

The book is highly recommend for students of military history, but also for any modern manager who has more trust in the statistical data on his employees than in the quality, character and mission oriented freedom of work in his employees.

About the Author

Linda Mastandrea is an accomplished athlete, attorney, advocate and author. She won 15 gold and 5 silver medals in international wheelchair track competition, including gold and silver medals at the 1996 Paralympics in Atlanta before retiring to pursue a career in disability law, public speaking and writing. Widely recognized as an authority on disability related topics, she has lectured to audiences worldwide on disability sport and recreation, and to nationwide audiences on topics ranging from disability sport to the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Donna Czubernat was born and raised in the Chicago suburbs. Donna is no stranger to disability issues. She has two siblings and a son with disabilities. This exposure helped Donna become an advocate who is continually researching information to share with people living with a disability. An entirely different universe of disability opened to Donna when she traveled with her sister and co-author, Linda, as she competed in wheelchair track and road racing.

Your Best Treatment Options: Combining the Healing Powers of Western and Chinese Medicines
Dear readers,
In the past six years, since we first wrote this book, there have been significant improvements in detection and treatment of hepatitis C. More people are able to stay on their Western medications because we have learned how to reduce the negative side effects, and more and more people are seeing the infection come under control. In addition, there is a growing use of Chinese traditional medicine as complementary therapy for HCV. We are thrilled that to date we have trained more than two hundred Chinese medicine practitioners in the United States, Mexico, and Canada through the Hepatitis C Professional Certification Program.
But as yet there is no universal cure. As the epidemic grows—more than 5 million people are now infected in the United States alone and 40 percent of people with HIV are coinfected with HCV—people with HCV are seeking a deeper understanding of their options using both Western medicine and alternative and adjuvant therapies.
This new, updated edition of The Hepatitis C Help Book is designed to bring you the latest information available from both Western and Chinese medicine. We have added a new chapter, The Optimum Interferon Protocol, in order to help people with HCV maximize treatment success. (See chapter 20.)
How did this epidemic sneak up on us? While the infection is not spread casually—transmission occurs only through the transfer of infected blood—more than 300,000 people were exposed through blood transfusions before the disease was first identified in 1989. Thousands more picked it up by sharing intravenous drug paraphernalia, the straws used to snort cocaine, tattooing, and other sources of potential blood-to-blood contact. What makes hepatitis C so frightening from a public health point of view is that those who have the disease seldom realize they’re sick when they first become infected. They may remain symptom-free for decades and pass the virus along through shared straws or needles, and even shared toothbrushes and razors.
According to the office of the Surgeon General, the epidemic already costs around $600 million a year. That price tag will skyrocket in the future. More than 80 to 85 percent of those infected will eventually develop chronic liver disease.

great & unique resource for people w/ hepatitis C

This is a "must read" book for anyone with hepatitis C, especially those interested in complementing Western medical advice with more holistic approaches such as acupuncture and herbs. The first edition helped me when I was going through treatment for hepatitis C and this revised edition is even more helpful. I was given a very low chance of success in clearing the virus with interferon & ribavirin, but since I had cirrhosis I needed to try. I credit weekly acupuncture, herbs, meditation, and qigong/tai chi, and other suggestions in this book for my beating the odds, and getting rid of the hepatitis C virus and the cirrhosis. Well, you can read more about my story on [...] if you want. I'm really grateful to have gotten through treatment successfully.
The Hepatitis C Help Book has info you don't find anywhere else. The explanations of how Eastern medicine can help people with liver problems are illuminating. Certainly take this book to your acupuncturist, but the recommendations of foods to eat or avoid for particular symptoms is invaluable for everyone, and there are also recipes worth trying. Getting advice from both the Western and Eastern perspective made me feel like I had some choices and that I was getting the best of both worlds. And there's advice on mood, sex, fuzzy thinking, aches & pains, why stress is harmful, how meditation helps, and lots of self-help advice. Unique things and up-to-date explanations of the basics. I'm teaching a course on Hepatitis now and I refer to this book, and recommend it to people who ask my advice on dealing with hepatitis C and other liver problems.

Preparing to use The Hepatitis C Help Book to guide me through my treatment

As someone who's had hepatitis C for 40 plus years (diagnosed about 10 years ago) and who went 35 years without health insurance, I've depended on alternative/complementary medicine a great deal.

As I prepare to begin treatment with interferon/ribavirin, I find this book invaluable for the practical information that it provides, which I'm certain will better enable me to deal with the side effects of the treatment.

The chapter and sections I find most helpful are those dealing with Western Medical Treatment options, Chinese Nutritional Therapy, Acupuncture, Qi Gong, and the section on the Integrated Treatment Program (especially the chapters dealing with digestive, fatigue, depression and pain issues, which I understand are common side effects.)

Finally, the Resource Appendix will be a great help in enabling me to find current information about helplines, networking, educational materials, chat rooms, message boards, lectures and workshops, and financial assistance; all of this will be essential to my clearing the virus and healing.

mix of approaches, but hard to see how they're integrated.

I read this book as a nurse working with hepatitis C patients, and as someone without any knowledge of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). I'm not sure who the book's ideal reader would be, but I don't think it's me or my patients. It takes the unusual approach of alternating chapters or half-chapters between Dr. Gish, a GI/hepatology physician of some renown, and Dr. Cohen, a Chinese medicine practitioner at a clinic that sees some of the same patients. The two halves have virtually nothing in common: Gish's side is more or less like other mainstream books on the subject, although not the best-written of them (that's probably Living with Hepatitis C: A Survivor's Guide), while Cohen starts every section with something along the lines of "In TCM, [whatever organ, cell, or other concept Gish just explained] has nothing to do with this disease; it's an imbalance between [nondescriptive name of some principle in TCM] and [another one of those]"... basically a lot of terms that, to anyone who hasn't studied TCM, will just sound like gibberish and not really give any basis for understanding what the doctor thinks you should do. Now I know that that's more or less how even the simplest "Western" medical teaching would sound to someone who's never heard of any of its concepts, but the fact is that just about everyone here has heard of at least the very basic ones, so it's possible to describe even something as complicated as the immune system in simple terms and, if necessary, explain how those concepts can be tested and applied. Gish sort of does that, but - at least for me, and I think for any reader without that training - Cohen doesn't. I'm left with the impression that they have two totally contradictory approaches, and it's not clear whether they really think there's a way that they can both be accurate, or whether they've just decided not to argue. In any case, I'm not sure what a patient would take away from the book itself; it seems more useful as a guide to further reading, or an incentive to ask your doctor more about everything.
