Fireworks Over Toccoa, by Jeffrey Stepakoff

Every so often that story comes along that reminds us of what it's like to experience love for the first time -- against the odds, when you least expect it, and with such passion that it completely changes you forever.

An unexpected discovery takes eighty-four-year-old Lily Davis Woodward to 1945, and the five days that forever changed her life. Married for only a week before her husband was sent to fight in WWII, Lily is anxious for his return, and the chance to begin their life together. In honor of the soldiers' homecoming, the small Georgia town of Toccoa plans a big celebration. And Jake Russo, a handsome Italian immigrant, also back from war, is responsible for the elaborate fireworks display the town commissioned. But after a chance encounter in a star-lit field, he steals Lily's heart and soul--and fulfills her in ways her socially-minded, upper-class family cannot. Now, torn by duty to society and her husband--and the poor, passionate man who might be her only true love--Lily must choose between a commitment she's already made and a love she's never known before.

Fireworks Over Toccoa takes us to a moment in time that will resonate with readers long after the book's unforgettable conclusion. A devastating and poignant story, this debut novel will resonate with anyone who believes in love.

From Publishers Weekly
Veteran television writer Stepakoff breathes new life into a familiar plot and setting in his debut novel. Lily Davis Woodward, once a headstrong, independent dreamer, acquiesced at age 17 to her wealthy parents' wishes and married Paul Woodward, the perfect high society Atlanta husband. Two weeks later, Paul ships out to serve on the European front, and Lily tends the home fires until the summer of 1945, when Lily, about to see her husband for the first time in three years, meets Jake Russo. The pyrotechnics man, who's planning the fireworks for the local July 4 celebration, spurs Lily to wonder whether her life is what she really wants. Sparks predictably fly, and after several passionate days, Lily is torn between what's expected of her and the chance to pursue an exciting and adventure-filled life. For sure, forbidden love's been done to death, but Stepakoff's spellbinding descriptions of Jake's unusual line of work and the lush countryside of northern Georgia, the unexpected plot twists, and a surprise ending give this story plenty of oomph. From Booklist
Television writer Stepakoff, author of Billion Dollar Kiss (2007), turns to fiction with a sweet, nostalgic tale set at the end of World War II. The daughter of a prominent family in Toccoa, Georgia, child bride Lily Davis Woodward hasn’t seen her husband, Paul, since he was shipped off to war three years ago. She is now nervously anticipating his return, until she comes across a handsome stranger named Jake setting off fireworks in a lush field. The chemistry between them is explosive, and before long, Lily finds herself showing Jake the secret abandoned cabin where she goes to create her artwork and entering into a torrid affair with him. Lily is predictably torn between love and duty, and wrestles with her desire to be with Jake and her fear of upsetting her genteel parents and the husband she barely knows by running away with him. Pleasant if not groundbreaking, Stepakoff’s fiction debut should appeal to readers who liked The Bridges of Madison County (1992) and other tearjerkers that celebrate forbidden but passionate love. --Kristine Huntley

Recipe for a Perfect Book:
By Steven James
In large pot add one part "The Bridges of Madison County", two parts "The Notebook", cover with Coca Cola and sprinkle with one heaping teaspoon pyrotechnics. Consume in front of a crackling fire with a bottle of your favorite wine, keeping tissues handy in case of overflow.

Author Stepakoff has crafted the perfect book. I was so riveted by FIREWORKS OVER TOCCOA that I stayed up half the night reading. I won't describe the plot because the product description has already done that. What I will do is rave about how engrossing the characters were, and how gripping the plot, and how deep the heartache is in this fine little book which is destined to be a national bestseller. It has all the ingredients of a hit movie, as well.

The only drawback that I could find was one lengthy and overly graphic love scene, which may somewhat limit the scope of the reading audience. I know I would think twice before passing it on to, say, one of my mother's friends. And I most definitely would not want to be the high school teacher suggesting that his students read it, although I know they would LOVE it.

That said, the rest of the book is flawless. One will laugh, cry, think, and ponder their life's choices while reading FIREWORKS OVER TOCCOA. Read this book as soon as you can get your hands on a copy. It's that good.

A Sparkling Love Story
By Linda Holman
I just finished reading "Fireworks Over Toccoa" by Jeffrey Stepakoff. This is the first book he has written, although he has been a successful playright for many years.

The story begins in the present time, and takes the reader back to the 1940's, right when America entered WW2. The setting is in Toccoa, a small city outside of Atlanta, and the story focuses on the life of Lily Davis Woodward.

Lily's father, Walter Davis, is a Coca Cola executive, and the family is considered very prestigious in their small town. Lily married very young, and her mother, Honey, has many expectations involving Lily's marriage. Lily's husband to be, Paul Woodward, is an employee of her father's, and was considered to be a good match for Lily.

Soon after Lily and Paul's wedding, Paul was sent overseas to help fight in WW2. Lily was left at home, like many women in those days, to set up their house and to contribute from home to the war effort. The sense of pride to be an American was deftly woven through this story.

Shortly before Paul is due to come home, a little over three years from the date he left, a family owned fireworks expert comes to town, to put on the grand 4th of July show for the members of the community. Lily hadn't remembered ever seeing a fireworks show, and in that day and age, the material used to make the colorful fireworks displays was needed for the war effort.

When Lily has a chance encounter with Jake Russo, who is in charge of the show, Lily learns all about the art of making fireworks, and her life changes forever.

I won't describe any more of the plot, as I feel it is best left for the reader to discover.

I feel that there was more that I liked about this story than what I didn't like. For the most part, I enjoyed the characters, and found the information about fireworks quite fascinating. I would have liked to have a bit more detail about Lily's three years without her husband, and some of her earlier years. I also felt that the ending fell a bit flat for me.

Overall, I think that this was a great first book for this author and is definitely a good read. If you liked the Nicholas Sparks or Nicholas Evans books, you will like this book.

If only the writing were as dazzling as the fireworks......
By Tracy Marks
In Fireworks over Toccoa, we are transported back to the end of World War II, when Lily was awaiting the return of a husband she hadn't seen for three years, and had only known in marriage for two weeks. A few days before his return, Lily fell suddenly in love with Jake, a pyrotechnics specialist she met in a field, under the fallout of dazzling fireworks. Decades later, discovering a memento of past love, she tells her story to a museum curator and her granddaughter, Colleen, who is anxious about her impending marriage.

Unlike most reviewers here, I cannot rave about Fireworks Over Toccoa, although I recommend it with reservations. It is a mildly enjoyable read, oriented toward lovers of romance, with the same theme as Bridges of Madison County, but lacking R.J. Waller's flair with simple, evocative language.

However, the novel does have believable characters and realistic, natural dialogue. It allows us to experience yearning for all-encompassing soul-and-body love, to taste it fully but confront the difficult choice of whether to let it go. It enables us to enter into the minds of the characters, and experience both romantic fulfillment and the confusing clash of conflicting emotions, such as Lily experienced after an evening with Jake: "She just stared at him, pondering. Had he changed his mind? Had she imagined it? Was she the one initiating it? She suddenly realized that she was sitting in this car, but she wasn't starting it. She was ready to stay and ready to go."

On the other hand, we do frequently have to tolerate trite language, and occasionally ponderous descriptions: "As she looked up, light refracted in the tawny trails still lingering like viscous nectar from a great tupelo comb hewn and oozing and over the clouds."

Having spent time in kudzu-infested wilderness, I liked the magic of the kudzu-covered cabin. La Stella di Lily, fireworks formulas, and the coca cola glass art all were intriguing. The reference to the legend of the Cherokee princess was an effective although obvious metaphor. The lovemaking scene sensuously and tenderly evoked Lily's complete but momentary physical and emotional fulfillment.

But for the most part, Jeffrey Stepakoff's writing doesn't "sing"; it barely hums. Although the focus on fireworks in post-War Georgia is original, the story and characters are not. I also was distracted by unnecessary mundane details (the preparation of lunch) and extraneous characters surrounding Colleen whom we did not need to know. As a story within a frame - Colleen getting married and her grandmother's storytelling - it fully involves us in a past reminiscence, but leaves us feeling incomplete in regard to our character in present time.

While the author elaborates fully upon the pleasures of emotional awakening and romance, he presents the choice of duty in a few dry words, when he could have made the satisfactions of commitment and responsibility more appealing. Making the adult choice is not only sacrifice of personal desires. It has its own substantial and enduring rewards.

Lovers of escapist romance are likely to delight in this novel. Readers seeking quality fiction will probably be disappointed, but may still enjoy a few hours of Jake and Lily's fireworks.

Retired Jewel thief, Kick, must avenge her reputation
By Dawn Dowdle
Kick Keswick is a retired jewel thief. She wasn't just any jewel thief, she was the Shamrock Burglar.

Now she and her husband, Commander Thomas Curtis of the Scotland Yard, have retired to their wonderful home in Provence. They enjoy wonderful food and picnics in lavender-filled fields.

Not long after Thomas disappears with her secret cache of precious stones and a cryptic note, Kick starts hearing about the antics of the Shamrock Burglar stealing irreplaceable jewels. Since she didn't do the thefts, she knows an imposter is out using her signature. And they aren't using it right, she might add.

She fears Thomas has betrayed her and heads off to figure out who is pretending to be the Shamrock Burglar and see if she can trip them up without being caught herself. She also finds out that her husband is heading up the investigation.

She ends up in Portofino where there is to be a large ball. She is watching the various people trying to figure out who the burglar is. Plus she is scoping out the location of the ball. Various interesting things happen along the way. She is finally able to gain access and stay at the home where the ball will be held. Now, can she find a way to thwart the thief and get away without being caught?

I love this series. Kick Keswick is so much fun. She is charming and always wonderfully dressed. Her antics are delightful and there is plenty of intrigue to keep you guessing. Not only is she a well-developed character, but the places she visits are described so well, I feel like I visited them. Plus what woman wouldn't love reading about all the wonderful jewelry and diamonds!

I look forward to many more adventures of Kick. I highly recommend this book.

This is a fun book to read through once or twice. It's really more of a puzzle book. Once you have figured out the CDC means, "Sea the sea" then you don't really need to read it again. Its a fun party book or something to pass on to your friends when you are done.

CDC is a wonderfully charming book to read with all people from a beginning reader to a school senior to a grandfather. I have had the most riotous time reading this book with my senior Physics class, and I can promise that it helped their lateral thinking no end.
I will not say anymore about the construct or the language of the book so I do not give away the surprise of it. I will, however, broadly hint that the title reads "See the Sea?"

Murder on the Eiffel Tower: A Victor Legris Mystery (Victor Legris Mysteries), by Claude Izner

The brand-new, shiny Eiffel Tower is the pride and glory of the 1889 World Exposition. But one sunny afternoon, as visitors are crowding the viewing platforms, a woman collapses and dies on this great Paris landmark. Can a bee sting really be the cause of death? Or is there a more sinister explanation? Enter young bookseller Victor Legris. Present on the tower at the time of the incident, and appalled by the media coverage of the occurrence, he is determined to find out what actually happened. In this dazzling evocation of late nineteenth-century Paris, we follow Victor as his investigation takes him all over the city and he suspects an ever-changing list of possible perpetrators. Could mysterious Kenji Mori, his surrogate father and business partner at the bookstore Legris operates, be involved in the crime? Why are beautiful Russian illustrator Tasha and her colleagues at the newly launched sensationalist newspaper Passepartout always up-to-date in their reporting? And what will Legris do when the deaths begin to multiply and he is caught in a race against time?

Murder on the Eiffel Tower is painstakingly researched, an effortless evocation of the glorious City of Light, and an exciting opening to a promising series of eight books featuring Victor Legris.

From Publishers Weekly
Fans of quality historicals will welcome Izner's debut, the first of a series to feature an engaging and fallible amateur sleuth. In 1889, Parisian bookseller Victor Legris finds himself in the midst of a baffling series of deaths connected with the newly opened Eiffel Tower. The victims all apparently died from bee stings, but Legris suspects foul play. His inquiry coincides with another role outside his usual occupation, as a contributor to Le Passe-partout, a new sensationalist newspaper. Almost as soon as the bookman seizes on a promising suspect, that person turns up dead as well, leaving him with a dwindling pool, which, to his chagrin, includes Le Passe-partout's attractive illustrator, an enigmatic Russian woman with whom he's become besotted. The taut pacing and vivid period detail will have readers eagerly turning the pages. (Sept.)

From Booklist
Bookseller Victor Legris investigates when several people die of apparent bee stings during the Universal Exposition of 1889 in Paris. The disparate group of victims includes a rag picker, a poor relation, a wealthy collector, and a budding opera star. Did these people really die of bee stings, or are they being murdered? If so, why? Victor looks for the connection between the four, and to his horror it appears that the link may be either Kenji, the man who raised him after his father’s death, or Tasha, the woman he is beginning to love. This leisurely paced mystery, steeped in the sights and sounds of nineteenth-century Paris and the Universal Exposition—and full of details about the newly open Eiffel Tower—pairs a methodical investigation with a love interest, carefully researched historical facts, and details of the literary world of the time. The only quibble is that the many secondary characters are rather underdeveloped and, hence, difficult to keep straight. Izner is the pseudonym for two sisters who are secondhand booksellers. --Sue O'Brien

Half-baked historical mystery
By Ellis Bell
Its 1889, and people from all over the world have come to Paris for the Exposition commemorating the centenary of the fall of the Bastille. One day, on top of the newly constructed Eiffel Tower, a woman dies, apparently of a bee sting. Later, an American naturalist dies, apparently of the same cause. There's no evidence to prove that these deaths are murder, but Victor Legris, a bookseller, sets out to solve the crime.

"Claude Izner" is the pen name of two sisters who are booksellers in Paris, so the atmosphere they evoke in this mystery is pretty authentic and detailed. I have a weakness for historical mysteries, so this book was right up my alley in that respect.

However, I couldn't get past the characters themselves. They all seem so stereotypical: the unassuming detective with a mistress in the wings, the mysterious coworker, the red-haired femme fatale. There's not much here that's original. Victor was also really dense at times when it came to obvious clues. In order for me to want to continue reading a series, I have to want to continue reading about the characters. Murder on the Eiffel Tower did not leave me with that feeling, so it's doubtful that I'll read further books in this series.

more a historical thriller than an amateur sleuth
By A Customer
In 1889 while the Buffalo Bill show parades through the streets of Paris as part of World Exposition extravaganza, a rag and bone man dies from a bee sting. Soon afterward at the top of the new Eiffel Tower, Parisian bookstore owner and photographer Victor Legris watches as a woman, Eugenie Patinot, apparently dies from a bee sting.

Victor meets with his business partner Kenji Mori, his friend reporter Marius Bonnet and Russian illustrator Tasha Kherson. With a common interest to spark them, Victor and Tasha become an entry. When a third "bee sting" death occurs near the Colonial Palace, Victor investigates hoping he can write an article for Le Passe-partout.

In some ways more a historical thriller than an amateur sleuth, MURDER ON THE EIFFEL TOWER is in either case a terrific tale. Readers will be caught up with Victor's energy as he escorts the audience around Paris at an exciting time for the city. The whodunit is cleverly devised to provide fans with a strong mystery, but the entertaining story line belongs to the hero and his supporting cast especially late nineteenth century Paris at a time when technology is booming.

A mix of the historical, the absurd and the anachronistic
By Pretty Sinister
If you love clichéd renderings of "turn of the century" types, then dig right in. If you like a jumbled mess of a plot that jumps all over the place never making any sense at all, you'll love this. I found the whole thing extremely tiresome.

A love struck --make that obsessed-- bookseller chasing after a newspaper illustrator makes up most of the plot. Based almost entirely on coincidence (but mostly because his name is in a visitor's book at the top floor of the Eiffel Tower) the bookseller suspects his boss as the murderer. Then he shifts his suspicion (based on the same absurd "reasoning") to the woman with whom he is obsessed. His "detective" work is the stuff of juvenile adventures like the Hardy Boys books (pretending to be a reporter, asking the neighbors nosy questions, etc.) It's all nonsense.

I give the book credit only for the painstakingly researched historical aspects of the Parisian exposition. That portion of the book is at least interesting and at times illuminating. The mystery plot? Mystery is a perfect word to describe the plot. It baffled me, had me scratching my head, often I would catch myself saying "What the...?" aloud. I like to be stumped or surprised with a detective story, but I would like it to have some kind of coherence. In the end, the outrageous motive for the murders is VERY 21st century. I find it hard to believe that anyone thought like that in the late 19th century. I'm really tiring of historical novels with characters whose personas and psyches are firmly planted in the future rather than in the era in which the book is supposedly set.

Stand Your Ground: Building Honorable Leaders the West Point Way, by Evan H. Offstein

West Point is the ideal laboratory for studying the dynamics of character, honor, and leadership: first, it operates a comprehensive honor education and enforcement program that has been subjected to rigorous Congressional scrutiny; second, it builds all of its academic, athletic, and military programs on this bedrock of honor. As a result, West Point invests heavily in mentoring, training, and evaluation to ensure the leadership and character development of its 4,000 cadets. From Civil War General Robert E. Lee to astronaut Edwin E. Buzz Aldrin to basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski, West Point has groomed leaders whose contributions far exceed the successful management of their immediate charges. By illuminating the principles by which West Point teaches leadership, Stand Your Ground not only provides a unique tour behind the scenes at this revered institution, but, more generally, imparts lessons of honor and character-building that can be adopted by any aspiring leader.

Management professor and West Point graduate Evan Offstein approached leaders at the U.S. Military Academy and the Department of the Army with two primary questions: (1) How does West Point develop its leaders?; (2) Can other individuals and organizations apply these methods effectively? Two years later, after conducting extensive on-site research at West Point and with business leaders in a variety of industries, he offers unprecedented access to the process of leadership development at West Point, and practical insights that can, indeed, be applied in any type of organization that strives to operate on the principle of integrity.

"Drawing on research he conducted at the United States Military Academy at West Point and with business leaders in a variety of industries, Offstein gives access to the process of leadership development at West Point and offers insights that can be applied in any type of organization that strives to operate on the principle of integrity." - Reference & Research Book News

"[O]ne of the most relevant and applicable responses to recent leadership breakdowns at such places as Enron, WorldCom, Adelphia, and Abu Ghraib. . . . Stand Your Ground delivers a message that began with our founding fathers, but which has been silenced in the last several years. In Stand Your Ground, Offstein provides compelling evidence that true leadership is first built on honor and that future leadership lapses well chronicled in the recent episodes occurring at Enron, WorldCom, Adelphia, and GlobalCrossing, could never again occur if West Point's model of honorable leadership development is followed. Given the almost limitless amount of leadership books that offer hollow promises and which have accomplished little to improve our current state of leadership, Offstein's Stand Your Ground stands apart as one of the choice few books capable of transforming leaders at all levels and across organizations." - PR Newswire US

"This book is an excellent description of what an honorable leader should look like and how to get there. . . . It is recommended for any one who hopes to be an honorable leader, not one who looks only at the bottom line and is filled with greed." - Catholic Library World

Review
"Debacles like Enron and WorldCom might not have occurred if senior leadership had followed Evan Offstein's premise of honorable leadership in Stand Your Ground. Indeed, leaders of all ranks in all settings can set themselves apart by following the principles outlined in his book. Drawing heavily on his West Point experiences and insights, the author points the way to the potential to transform not only the way we lead, but the way we live." (Richard Thornburgh
Government Affairs Advisor
Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Nicholson Graham LLP
Former U.S. Attorney General and Governor of Pennsylvania)

"In today's society ethics in leadership is a daily topic. Stand Your Ground consists of real-life examples of how ethics and honor in decision-making and communication have led to leadership success. I encourage anyone in a leadership position to read this book." (Frank Beamer
Head Football Coach, Virginia Tech)

"This book is plainly written and inspirational. It's full of new insights into leadership that come alive through analogies, anecdotes and metaphors--all useful to evaluating your own leadership. Making Stand Your Ground required reading at our nation's leading business schools would help eliminate Enrons from our future." (Rick Stafford
Distinguished Service Professor of Public Policy
Heinz School, Carnegie Mellon University)

"This book gives new meaning to the military axiom that successful leaders must hold the high ground; it convincingly shows both the 'how' and 'why' to the thesis that honor is the key to taking and holding the high ground in every leadership challenge." (Jerrold P Allen Major General
USAF (Retired) and Commandant
Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets)

"The idea of quantifying honorable leadership is a powerful concept--especially for today's business leaders. Evan Offstein does not promote the usual quick fixes, but skillfully and intellectually describes the foundation and the building blocks of exceptional leadership." (Robert J. Maricich
President and CEO, Century Furniture Industries)

"Every university or college hopes its graduates will become leaders within their chosen fields and their communities and, possibly, beyond. However, leadership development is not often a systematic prescribed part of the curriculum. Stand Your Ground is a compelling case for how one of the nation's leading academies has embedded leadership development into its educational fiber. Evan Offstein has provided for our students and the rest of us a pragmatic description of the West Point formula. Here are the essential lessons for everyone who aspires to be a true, ethical, honorable leader." (Robert M. Smith
President, Slippery Rock University)

"A must-read for anyone searching for the missing element in leadership today. Evan Offstein accentuates the true essence of successful leadership for any era." (Jeff Leischner
President and CEO, Thomas & Howard Company, Inc.)

"Stand Your Ground is essential reading not only for every Cadet and their parents but for prospective new Cadets." (John W. Gould
Owner, dlegal.com
President, Western Pennsylvania West Point Parents Club)

"Stand Your Ground is an impressive and well-reasoned book that should be required reading for MBA students, managers, and leaders at all levels. Evan Offstein offers compelling contemporary stories and sound research to provoke every leader to ask the question, 'Am I an honorable leader?' His unique experiences as a Cadet at West Point, decorated Army officer, successful business leader, and now noted academic professor enable him to weave together a rich argument for the conduct of business in accordance with the time-honored traditions of America's premier leadership institution." (Todd A. Uterstaedt
President and CEO, Baker & Daboll, LLC)

Challenging and inspiring
By Bill Pinches
In keeping with one of the themes of this book -- being big about small things -- I feel a need to be completely honest about four things: (1) Evan Offstein is a friend of mine, (2) if Evan Offstein hadn't been a friend of mine, I'm not sure I would have made it into the heart of the book, (3) if I hadn't made it into the heart of the book, I would not have had the opportunity of being deeply challenged about some tendencies in my own leadership style that probably needed to be challenged, and (4) if I hadn't had the opportunity of being deeply challenged, I wouldn't have grown. I did get into the heart of the book, I was deeply challenged . . . and I did grow.

There are two reasons why I almost didn't make it into the heart of the book. I found myself, first of all, struck by the degree to which Offstein sounds, at the beginning of the book, as if West Point is the greatest institution that has ever existed. Offstein is talking in this book about the importance of honor in leadership, and offers example after example of how West Point models and promotes a kind of honor that Offstein wants to commend to a wider world. In so doing, he sometimes sounds like a poster child for West Point, such as when (in the first chapter) he describes West Point as standing both geographically and methaphorically "on high ground." I came to learn, later on in the book, about the ethical standards at West Point, about the West Point Code of Honor, about the "Spirit of the Code," and about West Point's "Three Rules of Thumb" -- all of which illustrate the picture of the "high ground" that Offstein paints in the first chapter. In the heart of the book, he offers example after example of how these values are put into actual practice at West Point, in some truly impressive ways. But when I read the first chapter, and heard about this metaphorical "high ground" that West Point sits on, I wasn't convinced. I became convinced later on.

The second reason why I almost didn't make it into the heart of the book was because I also found myself struck by Offstein's fairly critical comments about leadership books, seminars, and pundits. Offstein suggests, for example, that the pundits "are emphasizing motivation rather than morals" and "communication rather than conscience" and "influencing others instead of integrity." He also states that "most leadership books propose quick fixes to serious and complex problems." I haven't canvassed the literature the way Offstein has (he has canvassed over 140 leadership books published over the last 20 years!), but the handful of leadership books I have found myself reading and wanting to digest don't fall into those categories. (Maybe that's because I just happen to be reading the good ones!) The tone of these comments sounded a tad on the arrogant side, as if Offstein was saying, "all those other books are wrong, and I'm right." I found that off-putting.

So by the time I had finished the introduction and the first chapter, I was feeling somewhat skeptical -- despite some tantalizing hints of good things to come. But then -- somewhere around page 28 or 29 -- the book really started to come alive for me.

The heart of Offstein's book is a wholesale proposal for leaders to not only act with honor (and, I would add, integrity), but to be people of honor (and integrity) in every facet of their lives. Offstein boldly discusses the ways in which we (dishonorably) tend to rationalize less-than-honorable actions. He points to the West Point Code of Honor ("A cadet will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do") as the "backbone" of a character-building program that West Point promotes which is intended to create (and, apparently, succeeds in creating) leaders with honor. This, Offstein argues, is what is desperately missing in our contemporary culture: leaders with honor. Offstein utilizes a seemingly endless supply of examples and anecdotes to demonstrate how the "backbone" is fleshed out in a wide variety of situations. The results, I must say, are truly impressive.

Personally, I found the central chapters in the book to be deeply challenging. Offstein presses his points firmly and aggressively. If other readers are anything like me, they will find their own honor being tested (and, hopefully, refined) through the process of reading this book. There came a point at which Offstein's comments struck home. Instead of thinking about leadership in general, I found myself suddenly thinking about me. I found myself wondering about specific behavior practices that I engage in, both consciously and unconsciously. I found myself wondering to what degree I truly seek the high ground to the extent that I could. I discovered, in the process, that I have a ways to go in my own efforts to lead with integrity.

Offstein writes in the preface about what a humbling experience it was to write this book. "In the writing of this book," he says, "I was slowly becoming a subject matter expert in the field of honorable leadership while simultaneously coming to grips with my own limitations as a leader." He says, "there have been times, quite frankly, that I missed the mark, meaning that I've not always led from the high ground. . . . Very plainly, while I'm on the right track to reach the high ground, when I look in the mirror, I still realize that I've got a ways to go. The journey, as it is for many, is on-going." The beauty of Offstein's book is that it, itself, serves as a mirror for the reader who seeks to lead honorably. It provides something of a "measuring stick" by which the rest of us are invited (encouraged? forced?) to take a good, hard look at ourselves, and at the degree to which we actually lead with honor. This book did that for me -- and a clear result is a renewed commitment on my part to make a more diligent effort to secure the high ground.

Thank you, Evan. I needed this book. And I think the world does too.

Offstein Just Nails It
By Joshua Kennedy
Quite simply, Evan Offstein just nails his thesis: truly successful individuals, leaders, and their organizations are based on a deep reservoir of moral/ethical grounding that help them to make the right decisions every single day. His numerous, down-to-earth examples hammer it home from multiple angles, and you can't help but be convinced that he's on to something here. Dr. Offstein has a gift for writing prose that is personable and easy to read. It's as if he's talking straight to you through the pages of his book much the same way he might deliver a lecture at his university.

Perhaps my favorite lesson from his book is the chapter on lifelong preparations for a MOMENT (heck, multiple MOMENTS). It reminds me of what one Army General said one time: "Your integrity will be challenged in small ways every day." it has proven absolutely true over the years, and the daily struggle continues to make sure we do the right thing by our coworkers, our kids, our wives, our friends, etc. Those who can make the RIGHT ethical choices on a day-to-day basis will be slowly building the bedrock of their organizations to guard against the Enrons, Tycos, NCAA scandals, etc. of the world.

Most of the so-called "leadership" or "management" books you'll find wasting shelf-space at Barnes & Nobles or Book-a-Million wish they could lash onto some of the truths that Dr. Offstein lays out in his concise book. Highly recommended!

Finally--a leadership book that explains how to BE a good leader!
By Juan Colorado
I first approached this book with a bit of skepticism, as I thought its focus would be upon the "grandiose" merits of the West Point experience (which I shared elbow-to-elbow with the author, my classmate). I was greatly relieved to discover that this work is actually a testimonial to the necessity to BE a good person and leader, so important (and foreign) in a day and age where corrupt individuals realize incredible personal gains while simply paying lip service to such lofty ideals as honor. This book explains both the origin of corporate corruption and the way a leader SHOULD behave to ensure that this phenomenon does not continue to grow in scope.

I was happy to see that Dr. Evan Offstein was able to distance himself from our shared Cadet experiences and approach the book in an organized, thoughtful, and systematic fashion. He explains that good leadership begins with an honorable character and THEN extends into the leader's expertise and skill sets. I always struggled to quantify the almost intangible quality which caused me and my West Point classmates to react in horrified disbelief when we encountered corrupt individuals with an almost limitless propensity to harm and defraud employees and stakeholders. Evan has finally defined this lineament: honor, and the overwhelming need for an individual to BE a good person, rather than simply KNOW the "acceptable" or "expert" manner in which to proceed and to "DO" only what needs to be done to temporarily satisfy personal and shareholder demands.

The book is straightforward, easy to read, and informative without possessing an air of pretense or superior knowledge. I am firmly convinced that if leaders the world over would read this tome and apply its principles, corporate scandal would disappear, replaced by increased levels of profit, worker motivation, and customer/shareholder satisfaction. PLEASE READ THIS BOOK!!!!!

YANKEE DOODLE DIXIE (Chapter One)

It doesn’t take a wizard to figure out the last thing a girl should do is go running hundreds of miles away from home to Vermont just because a man asks her to do so. It also doesn’t take a pretty girl with pigtails and a pooch named Toto to tell you that there is absolutely, positively, no place like home.

Just thinking about wizards and terriers makes me wish I were Dorothy—sleepily opening my eyes to Auntie Em placing a cold rag on my forehead. In my case it would be Kissie sitting at my bedside with a jumbo cold compress. “Wake up, baby,” she’d say. “You’ve just had a bad bad dream.”

It was a dream all right, it just wasn’t mine.

Fourteen months and a mound of heartache later, my compass is pointing south again, and my speedometer is creeping toward eighty. Despite having three unlikely Vermont comrades helping me to find the road back, an old German wicked witch named Helga hindered that road, making it rockier than the Appalachian Trail not twenty miles from the front door of my Vermont inn. Not only did she swindle me out of both my business and my marriage, she despised my own terrier—a small, helpless Yorkie by the name of Princess Grace Kelly. Gracie couldn’t stand Helga, either; probably one of the reasons her little heart finally pooped out. Even though she’s forever buried up in the freezing cold North, I’ve got the cross from her grave sitting right here on the passenger’s seat next to me on our way back home.

I can see home in the distance. The parallelogram of Tennessee on the welcome sign slowly emerges the closer I get. The February sun is setting to the right of it and as I roll over the state line my heart rate seems to slow down. A calm washes over me like a warm shot of Grand Marnier, sliding down my throat and coating my insides. It’s been over a year since I’ve been home and I wouldn’t doubt it if I’ve given myself early high blood pressure.

We’ve been driving for three days—my two little girls and me—1,473 miles due south. Sarah and Isabella are in the backseat and I steal another peek at them in my rearview mirror. Their little heads are resting against the sides of their car seats, the monotony of the boundless pavement finally lulling them to sleep. For the first time all day it’s quiet.

Since leaving Vermont, in one heck of a nor’easter I might add, I’ve paid equal attention to the traffic and my heartstrings. It is a wonder we haven’t rear-ended anyone, and an even bigger one that my sultry grin isn’t yet a permanent fixture on my face. Between New York and Pennsylvania all I’ve thought about is the man who stole my heart—and who, only hours ago, sealed our months of longing with a not-so-chaste kiss in George Clark’s gas station parking lot. Peter Owen saved my restaurant and my pride when my husband left me for a blond bombshell with a face and bosoms only money could—and did—buy. Helga is the one responsible for their meeting, just one of the many “wicked witch” maneuvers she employed as part of her nasty scheme to repossess our inn.

The rest stops between Pennsylvania and Virginia were punctuation marks in my romantic recollecting. A stream of consciousness brewed in my mind: when Peter and I danced to Van Morrison’s “Into the Mystic,” the first time I tasted his white chocolate mousse, and the moment in the kitchen after my inn’s grand opening when we both knew the sparks flying weren’t just from the faulty stove.

And now, in Tennessee, some seventy-two hours have passed but I’m reduced to schoolgirl antics, playing our sole kiss over and over in my mind. I’ve run that kiss through my head, every minute detail, a thousand times already. How he tasted, how his lips felt against mine, the way his tongue moved slowly around my mouth, and how my heart swirled and danced under his touch. I suppose I’ll have to live on that memory until the first time he comes to town. Memphis in May, perhaps? That’s the perfect time of year. He’ll arrive for the Beale Street Music Festival and stay for the whole month. After all, May means Mud Season back in Vermont. And Mud Season, or “The Thaw” as the Vermonters call it, means there won’t be any work for him there. Heck, the whole state practically shuts down during that time.

Springtime in Memphis, however, is glorious. We’ll go to the Memphis in May Barbecue Festival and the Sunset Symphony together. We’ll watch the ducks walk the red carpet at the Peabody Hotel and we’ll hang out with Virginia and John, Mary Jule and Al, Alice and Richard, and we’ll … the girls will die when I show up unannounced. I cannot wait to see the look on Virginia Murphey’s face when I pull up in her driveway in oh, about eight more hours. I figure it’ll probably be that late by the time my daughters and I go to a drive-through for dinner and take at least three more tee-tee breaks. She and John will be sound asleep but I’ll call her cell and she’ll answer anyway. It won’t be the first time I’ve dialed her at one in the morning.

Of course Alice, the bossiest of the three, will wonder why in the world I didn’t come to her house. Mary Jule might be disappointed, too, but she would never question any decision I make. It’s hard having to choose between three best friends. The only reason I’m driving to Virginia’s house is because, well, honestly, she knows me the best. You can’t room with someone all four years of college, and every summer in between, and not know everything there is to know about each other. Virginia knows that I wax my bikini line, and I know about the few little hairs that grow around her nipples and how she sometimes lets them grow too long and forgets to shave them. Modesty goes out the window when you’re living with someone you’ve known since the age of five.

Alice and Mary Jule know plenty of my secrets, too, but there’s just something about Virginia that soothes me. She’s got a calming effect on my soul. Perhaps that’s because she’s never one time judged me about anything, or maybe it’s just as plain and simple as the fact that we’ve never been interested in the same man. Our types are completely opposite. She likes more of a girl’s guy and I’ve always been attracted to the guy’s guy. John is perfectly happy to shop with her all day long. He’s also the type to wear a Lily tie or lime-green shorts. I prefer the rugged look. I’ll take a man who wears a Henley shirt over an argyle sweater, any day of the week.

Virgy—that’s what I call her—and I just flat-out love one another. To this day, we’ve never been in a single fight. Actually, that’s not quite true. The closest Virginia has come to scolding me in our twenty-nine-year friendship was when I let my husband talk me into moving to Vermont in the first place. And now, truth be told, she had every right.

I got the idea from Mama. She had always told me that being a good wife meant following your husband. She claimed she didn’t really want to move to Memphis, either, away from Greenwood, Mississippi, but she did it because it’s what Daddy wanted her to do. “It would have been one thing,” she used to say, “to move to Jackson. Several of my best friends from Ole Miss lived there.” Kissie told me that she had once overheard a phone conversation between Mama and one of her friends. Said my grandfather told Daddy that he’d teach him to be a great farmer if he’d just dig his heels into the Mississippi Delta and not move to Memphis. He told Daddy that all the cotton land stretched out as far as the eye could see could be his, if he’d just lay his roots down in Mississippi and leave Mama right where she belonged, in her own hometown. Like me, Mama was an only child.

But Daddy’s roots couldn’t be planted in the middle of a cotton field. Daddy told him, “Mr. Grov’a, I appreciate the off’a, but I don’t need your cotton fields. I’ve got a cotton family business waiting on me two hours naw’th of here and I won’t have to get dirt under my finga’nails. I’ll buy your cotton and won’t ever have to break a sweat.” Daddy wasn’t the farmer type. He’d rather work out of his old warehouse on Front Street, or Cotton Row as they call it, right in the middle of all the buying and selling.

I was raised in a stand-by-your-man household, and I also happened to fall head-over-heels in love with a football quarterback I first saw in the tenth grade. Even though my red-and-blue cheerleading skirt barely covered my backside, Baker Satterfield never looked my way, all because my chest was flat. That all changed, though, the summer before my senior year. When I ran out onto the football field that fall, pom-poms raised high above my head, my bosoms had blossomed into a natural size D, almost overnight. That man took notice of me then, and after swapping class rings, numerous road trips from Ole Miss to UT, horrendous long-distance telephone bills, and a proposal that would make even Scarlett O’Hara swoon, we finally tied the knot a couple of years after we both graduated from college. We had, at least at first, what I would call a wonderful marriage: two beautiful daughters, a gorgeous home in Memphis, lifelong friends, great sex, and a social life that involved peach daiquiris and other succulent activities. So when my true love told me of his lifelong desire to open an inn in Vermont—well, I had to follow my man.

Turns out my man followed something of his own and left our barely opened B&B, our girls, and our dog, not to mention our dream life, in my (then) manicured hands. Leaving my beloved Memph...

The first book was a slow start, but when it sizzled it did not stop. This book sizzled from the start. I cannot wait to read the next book, but I'm already sad that is is the last one.

Yankee Doodle Dixie is Another Winner by Patton
By Tina Says
Lisa Patton's debut novel Whistin' Dixie in a Nor'easter was a book I absolutely enjoyed when I read it. Leelee Satterfield has just moved to Vermont to help fulfill her husband Baker's lifelong dream of running an inn. While Leelee doesn't want to leave Memphis she does her best to find something positive in her new life, even when Baker takes up with an aging ski instructor leaving Leelee high and dry to run the inn by herself. The weather in Vermont is less than ideal as well and Leelee is first snowed in and then must experience mud season. Although there are many things in Vermont that are not going Leelee's way and her friends are encouraging her to move back home, her chef Peter is someone she might not mind being more than friends with.

Yankee Doodle Dixie picks up right where Patton's first book left off. Even though it has been months since I read Whistlin Dixie and I do remember a lot of it, Patton does a great job refreshing this story again and even readers who didn't read her first book could pick up this second installment.

While I still love Leelee, I also loved the cast of quirky characters that Patton created to surround Leelee with. Her new job at the radio station provides interesting co-workers, an aging rock star who gets Leelee's heart beating again, and a narcissistic boss. Her new neighbor in the house Leelee is renting is a Pampered Chef consultant. And a Tupperware consultant. And an Amway consultant. And he cannot pronounce his r's leading to rather entertaining conversations.

Leelee's exploits made me laugh, but I most of all wished for her to find some happiness with Peter who she left in Vermont. Although the two talk on the phone, there is 1,473 miles between them and long distance relationships aren't known to work. I loved Leelee's girlfriends who are introduced in Whistlin' Dixie. Now that Leelee is back in Memphis the three friends are in on the daily events in their friend's life and the girls are good for a few laughs.

Although Patton tied this one up neatly, I am holding out for a third installment. I enjoy the different predicaments Leelee finds herself in, and am sure with the opening of the new restaurant she is running there are numerous story possibilities. Perhaps Patton can find another great Dixie title (Way Down South in Dixie? or Look Away Dixie Land?) to continue Leelee's story. Once I started Yankee Doodle Dixie it was hard to put down, and I'll be recommending this one to many friends.

From Publishers Weekly
Levinson's long experience in music public relations, the handling of rock stars, and writing and producing has provided him with material and styles enough for three novels, but not enough of substance for any one novel. Following hot on the heels of The James Dean Affair and The Elvis and Marilyn Affair, his latest eulogizes the murdered Beatle, the story split between Lennon's own time and a huge, mob-inspired John Lennon Imagine That! Memorial Rock Festival in 2001. Making their third appearance are Levinson's series protagonists, newspaperman Neil Gulliver and TV actress Stevie Marriner, known as the "Sex Queen of the Soaps." Gulliver covered Lennon's death, and now he and Stevie find themselves appearing in the massive festival in his honor. Someone doesn't want them around, though, and will kill to keep them away. Ironically, among the parade of stock supporting characters crooks, assassins, drunken Indians, politicians, actors, sinister Treasury agents and "Feebies" (FBI agents) Lennon himself is only peripheral. He is given occasional lines, once at an earlier festival: "They have a bloody foogin' concert in me honor to raise money to wipe out weapons, and it brings on one gun going off after the bleeding next." It may be news that Mark David Chapman, who shot him, had been hired to shoot President-elect "Dutch" Reagan instead. Enough names are dropped to fill an agent's Rolodex (including those in a lengthy author's note), and gags abound, but more attention to plot would have been helpful for the bewildered reader. Readers who pick this up hoping for all Beatles all the time will be disappointed what they'll get is a mediocre mystery with the musician as hook and the rock scene as background d‚cor.

From Library Journal
Series protagonist Neil Gulliver lost his first job because of John Lennon's murder. Now, Gulliver is a famous L.A. journalist who lives with (but is divorced from) soap star Stevie Marriner. Because of their involvement in a previous case (The James Dean Affair), they try to lie low but instead become murder targets when a Treasury agent insists they appear at a recently revived Lennon tribute. Apparently a mobster is using the event to launder his ill-gotten gains, but further complicationsironic and otherwisequickly ensue. Wonderful dialog, great plotting, plentiful Hollywood tidbits, and literate prose; strongly recommended.

From Booklist
This is the third adventure for columnist Neil Gulliver and his exwife, soap star Stevie Marriner. Author Levinson, a former Hollywood PR specialist, uses the death of a celebrity as the hook for each of his books, tying the real-life death to a fictional crime. This time the death of John Lennon, an emotional experience for both Neil and Stevie, who were teens at the time, connects to a case involving Neil's former fiancee, the mayor of Palm Springs, and a mobster who might be an assassin. A convoluted plot told through multiple points of view and across multiple points of time makes for challenging and occasionally frustrating reading, but the celebrity-rich tale will definitely appeal to the People magazine crowd eager for even fictional details about the lifestyles of the rich and famous. The amateur sleuths make engaging enough characters, but their roles as crime solvers require considerable suspension of disbelief. Gary Niebuhr

The Best Neil Gulliver and Stevie Marriner Affair
By Kent Braithwaite
Being a Southern California-based mystery writer who counts Robert S. Levinson among my friends, I freely admit that I might be biased here. Regardless, I believe THE JOHN LENNON AFFAIR is Mr. Levinson's strongest work. As I read the previous statement, I realize it is quite strong. After all, Mr. Levinson's previous mystery, THE JAMES DEAN AFFAIR, camped at the top of the LA TIMES Bestseller List so long that everyone stopped counting the weeks. In THE JOHN LENNON AFFAIR, Mr. Levinson draws upon his vast experience in the recording industry to give this work's backdrop a realistic feel. Being of the generation that can tell you what I was doing when I heard John was shot--listening to a Wings LP--I enjoyed the novel's opening sequence involving the events immediately following John's murder. Mr. Levinson then brings us to the present day and involves his series characters Neil, the journalist, and Stevie, the soap opera star, in a complicated scheme involving a music festival. The festival is being held in John's memory in a small desert town near Palm Springs, yet not all with the festival is on the up and up. The plot twists and turns. The characters are loads of fun. The Gulliver-Marriner divorce continues to stumble along; their divorce seems not to be finalized. The dialog is crisp. The setting is so realistically rendered that I instantly identified the actual locations in the fictionalized locales. THE JOHN LENNON AFFAIR is a top-notch mystery, Robert S. Levinson's best.

Fantastic romantic mytsery
By A Customer
Neil Guliver, star columnist of the Daily and Soap Opera Star Steve Marriner have been divorced for seven years, but everyone knows they still have strong feelings for one another. With the James Dean serial killer look a like still on the loose (SEE THE JAMES DEAN AFFAIR), Neil has moved in to Stevie's mini-mansion. He knows her home has a state of the art security system and a full time bodyguard.
Their safety is once again threatened by outside forces when Neil becomes involved in the John Lennon Imagine That Revival. A treasury agent wants Stevie and Neil to obtain the inside information on money laundering by local mobster Aaron Lodger, a powerful person with mighty high connections. Mr. Lodger tells Stevie and Neil that the treasury Agent was responsible for the two mismanaged hits on President Ford and one on President Reagan. The daring duo does not know whom to believe, but they know their lives are in jeopardy because it seems as if everyone is out to finish them off.
THE JOHN LENNON AFFAIR is a fascinating and reliable trip down memory lane for the baby boomer generation, bringing back a special place in the heart's of the over forty crowd. The shoot them up action scenes add a sense of adventure to the well articulated and subtly executed novel. The romance between the two lead characters adds a lot of spice to a very enthralling thriller. Robert S. Levinson enchants the reader with his magical writing ability.

The Best One Yet!
By A Customer
In "The John Lennon Affair," Robert S. Levinson whisks us back in time to John Lennon's murder, when his recurring characters, Neil Gulliver and Stevie Marriner are 20 years younger. This device is a perfect set-up for the present day adventure and we join Neil and Stevie as they attend a rock festival honoring Lennon's memory on an Indian reservation in the California desert.
The story races along. I couldn't put the book down. The characters are superb. There are federal agents, a crime boss, scheming gamblers, and an Indian mystic. If that isn't enough, Stevie's ex-boyfriend and Neil's ex-girlfriend show up to keep them on an uneven keel.
Read this book. You'll love it. And if you somehow missed the author's earlier books, don't forget to order "The Elvis and Marilyn Affair," and "The James Dean Affair." They're also superb and they'll keep you on the edge of your chair.
What's next Mr. Levinson? I can hardly wait!
