Invisible Armies, by Jon Evans

From the mines of remote India, to the streets of Paris and the lights of Las Vegas, Danielle Leaf is pursued by a terrible secret.
Danielle came to India to find herself. Then she agreed to deliver a passport for her ex-boyfriend, legendary computer hacker Keiran Kell. It seemed like a simple favor for a friend - until she was abducted by thugs and imprisoned in a nightmarish cell.
She is soon joined by another captive: Laurent, a Foreign Legionnaire turned international activist. Their daring escape is only the beginning. Now Danielle has been drawn into a war between a transnational mining company that is poisoning thousands of Third World farmers, and the invisible armies of anti-corporate protestors who oppose it. A cause, finally, that she can believe in.
Amidst a whirlwind romance on the Goa coast, bloody street battles in Paris, cyberspace duels between shadowy hackers, and a bomb gone wrong in London, Danielle, Laurent and Keiran grow more deeply involved in this battle than they ever expected ... until the line between right and wrong begins to blur. For both sides of this war are willing to kill for their cause - and both sides hide deadly secrets.
Award-winning author Jon Evans returns with new heroes and a compulsive, fast-paced story that examines issues of corporate exploitation and the extreme edge of anti-globalization activism. Invisible Armies is Cold War suspense for the modern age, a thriller that looks behind the power of protests and the politics of big business.

From Publishers Weekly
Following his Arthur Ellis Award– winning debut, Dark Places, Evans forays into corporate malfeasance versus organized protest, but disappoints. A former Infosys project manager living in Bangalore, India, Danielle Leaf agrees to deliver a package for Keiran Kell, a London-based hacker. En route, Danielle is seized by thugs apparently in the employ of Kishkinda, a megacorporation that has been blamed by activists for industrial pollution that has plagued the Bangalore area. While held captive, Danielle meets an attractive activist, also captive, Frenchman Laurent. As the two conspire to escape, Laurent tells Danielle that the package's intended recipient, Jaylitha, who had been doing research to build a case against Kishkinda, has been gruesomely murdered. After Laurent's martial arts skills free them, the pair undertake a series of dangerous escapades, with Danielle suspecting her ally may not be fully trustworthy. Danielle is less than plausible as an action hero, and Evans's take on globalization and its discontents is less than convincing. (June)

From Booklist
Evans, who has been carving a niche for himself as the author of travel thrillers—Dark Places (2004), The Blood Price (2005)—returns with another entertaining adventure. Danielle Leaf was just doing a favor for a friend, delivering a passport to a woman in India. Abducted and thrown in a dank cell, Danielle is utterly confused until a fellow prisoner explains that she has stumbled into the middle of a battle between a multinational mining company and a determined and potentially violent group of protestors. Escaping from their captors, Danielle and her new friend, the charming Laurent, run for safety. Moving at a brisk clip, the story ranges from rural India to Paris to London, blurring the line between good and evil along the way until it pretty much ceases to exist. Evans, something of a globetrotting adventurer himself, keeps growing as a storyteller, and this is his most accomplished thriller yet. Pitt, David

A captivating story and well written around fascinating concepts
By Bookfan
The book explores issues such as the exploitation of third-world countries, extreme anti-capitalist activism and takes a look behind the power of public protest and the politics of big business. It shows that in today’s modern world, where security cameras record every move you make and databases determine who you are, a select few play god by manipulating and controlling our technology. Those would-be gods can make themselves rich, save lives or ruin people on a whim, even change history and get away with murder.

This is the painful truth that Danielle Leaf, the main character in this story, learns.
When Danielle, in India studying Yoga, is asked by her old boyfriend Keiran to deliver a passport to a woman in a remote village she doesn’t think too much about it and sets out on an afternoon motorcycle ride to deliver it. However she could never have imagined how dramatically that errand would change her safe and secure life. So much so that she ends up a wanted fugitive running from the authorities and fearing for her life. Before she knows it she and Keiran find themselves caught in a war between a multinational corporation and an anti globalization movement.
Danielle quickly learns that things are not always black and white and finds out the hard way how an obvious conspiracy can be used to cover up dark secrets. While Keiran, a genius hacker, helps to get them out of the hairy situations that follow he sometimes makes things worse, getting them into even more trouble.

The characters are interesting and well developed and take you on a journey of self-discovery as they learn that things are not always black and white, thereby forcing them to make up their own minds about what is right and wrong. The story flows well and is thought provoking at times, making the reader consider issues like internet privacy, public surveillance or how safe they really are in the modern highly digital world where all their information is potentially stored on the cloud.

Overall this is a captivating story and well written around fascinating concepts. It’s definitely a bit different and more engaging than your average action and adventure suspense novel.

Nope!! Didn't/ couldn't get into this book. Too weird. The heroine is taking a passport to someone she doesn't know .........in India. Who in their right mind does that in this day and age?. She is captured, locked in a concrete prison and lo and behold, who do they throw in with her? An x foreign legioneer. He kicks the roof off. Yeah right! Then they get away...caught again...get away....are always going out in public.....come on. I wont read more by this author.

Some interesting twists
By Krys
Found the book to have a few interesting plot twists, it was not what I expected. It did keep me reading to the end though once or twice I thought about not finishing.

For those who would be offended the characters randomly drop the "F" bomb in their conversations.

After locating Pendleton and meeting the stunning Li Lan--and nearly being killed by an unknown assailant when the pair flee from him--Carey soon realizes that more than mere fertilizer know-how is at stake. Neal Carey's ( A Cool Breeze on the Underground , LJ 2/1/91) new mission takes him to San Francisco, Hong Kong, and China.
Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews
Neal Carey, the Smollett-loving specialist in finding people who don't want to be found (A Cool Breeze on the Underground, 1990), is hustled off to San Francisco to drag AWOL pesticide expert Robert Pendleton away from china doll Li Lan and back to paternal corporation AgriTech. But the fireworks that erupt after Neal's found the happy couple make him wonder whether gorgeous, talented painter Li Lan isn't actually a Communist agent who's trying to woo Pendleton back to her country; by the time Neal has been taken prisoner in the Walled City of Hong Kong, he's already gotten the Communists, the CIA, and AgriTech ready to burn him. And more trouble lies ahead, as shadowy patriarch Xao Xiyang and his treacherous underling Peng plot against each other to manipulate Neal into exposing Pendleton and Li Lan in a climax that still has room for a surprise or two. Despite Neal's inveterate habit of wising off in his mind's mouth, this is a sturdy two evenings' worth of entertainment. -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

A Long And Twisting Story
By sbissell3
I'm a big fan of Don Winslow and will read everything he writes. I wasn't disappointed in this book, but it shows that Winslow was only developing his 'voice' when he wrote it. The plot takes a few too many twists and turns to be completely believable and if Neal Carey is suppose to be all that smart why does he never seem to catch on?

But in the end I really liked this book and more or less read it in one sitting; I'm not sure what more you can ask of a novel.

And I'll add this to all my reviews from now on: Will those idiots who want to complain about the price of Kindle editions please go somewhere else, like the Kindle forums, and not give 1 star reviews to books because they felt that a couple of bucks is too much to pay!

My first foray into the Winslow oeuvre. It won't by my last.
Audio book [very well performed by Joe Barrett] was funny, entertaining, exotic, clever and interesting.
I've been reading rave reviews of Winslow for years. Now I see why.
Very enjoyable and thus, recommended.

Neal Carey Series.
By Charles B. Rose
Another enjoyable book from Don Winslow. Since I have liked all of Winslow's books that I have read,I am trying to do his series books in the order in which they have been written and I believe that this is the second. It is very different from the first and I can see why certain reviewers found the China detail tedious, but I just treated it as a learning experience about a history that I know little about. It is interesting to me that Winslow has used totally different geographical settings for each story( the 3rd being the Great Basin region in Nevada). I wonder if this isn't difficult for an "East Coaster" like Neal?
Always a fun read from Winslow.

Amazon.com Review
Among the many things Jay Amberg does right in this sharp and savage new thriller is to create a credible monster--a physically and psychologically maimed computer wizard named James Robert Saville. This character plans and executes the kidnapping of the 9-year-old daughter of Chicago Bulls superstar Robert "Sky" Walker and his glamorous, high-profile television news reporter wife.

Amberg quickly makes us believe that Saville really is a master of the electronic universe, smarter than the people pursuing him and also able to do all the hard work necessary to make his plan succeed. The only cop with a shot at stopping him is a suburban detective named Tom Hopkins, a decent, dedicated man with undiscovered links to Saville's past, plus the obvious integrity to earn the trust of a jaded but ultimately likable sports legend like Walker.

Two other characters add depth to Amberg's strong story: an ambitious, amoral television journalist manipulated by Saville, and Walker's slick, secretive lawyer with an agenda of his own. There are several disturbing moments of pain involving children, but they're there for reasons of realism rather than exploitation. --Dick Adler

From Booklist
Sky Walker is the superstar of the world-champion Chicago Bulls. His wife, Monique, is a beautiful television news personality. Their fairy-tale life seems irrevocably shattered when Tonya, their nine-year-old-daughter, is snatched by an unknown but technologically savvy psychotic with unclear motives. The kidnapper's demands are transmitted electronically via a sophisticated, virtually untraceable computer network. Heading the investigation is Tom Hopkins, who struggles to maintain his focus in the face of a media frenzy that rivals the O. J. Simpson circus. Television reporters uncover false leads, the kidnapper sends red herrings from cyberspace, and all the while a young innocent suffers at the hand of a madman with no discernible motive. Though the obvious resemblance to Michael Jordan is heavy-handed, the plot takes on a life of its own, due in large part to the palpable evil of the kidnapper and the empathy and humanity of Officer Hopkins. Toss in an unsettling but believable conclusion, and readers will be eagerly awaiting the next Amberg suspense novel. Wes Lukowksky

Stayed Up Late to Finish This One!
By A Customer
I love a good detective thriller and this one certainly fills the bill. Likeable, hard-working Commander Tom "Hoop" Hopkins faces seemingly unsurmountable odds in trying to catch the cyber-kidnapper of Tanya Walker, 9-year-old budding-gymnast daughter of the Chicago Bulls' superstar player, Sky Walker, and his glamourous anchor-woman wife. Lots of characters get involved in this fast-paced story and I'm still having trouble figuring out what to do with Pit Bull, the sleazy t.v. reporter...but that's okay. The story twists and turns and kept me on the edge of my chair. I had started to bed and finally gave up and just got a cup of tea and finsihed the book! I hope there are more books forthcoming about this group of dedicated law enforcers...Hoop, Carl Henderson of the FBI and others. We gotta catch that brutal Saville. Surely he can't get away to Europe never to be heard from again. This book is truly a "thriller" in every sense of the word. A really good read!

Now for something different: Amberg nukes the genre's rules
By A Customer
Everyone believes that Robert and Monique-Jones Walker have it all. He is the NBA's finest player and she is an internationally renowned news-anchor. They both love and adore their-nine year old daughter Tonya. However, the perfect world abruptly collapses when Tonya is abducted by an insane hacker.
It becomes apparent that this is no ordinary celebrity kidnapping. No ransom appears. Instead, E-mail notes, ugly faxes, and nasty pictures are sent to the media. Revenge for some apparent slight seems to be the motive. As the Walkers become more desperate by the minute, others see this as the international case that will bring them fame and fortune even if it costs the victim her life.
BLACKBIRD SINGING is a taut thriller that will either elate readers with its unending excitement or leave them feeling extremely nauseous. The story line is fast-paced and graphic, and genre rules are smashed in not so pleasant ways. This will definitely leave some of the audience (not just purists) upset, but actually adds to the overall demeanor of the tale. The characters are intriguing, but extremely sad, anxious, and tragic. Jay Amberg scribes a brilliant kidnapping who-done-it, but some individuals will have problems with the lack of relief from the unending madness of the culprit and the melancholy of the Walkers. A bit of comic or other relief from the constant downward spiral would have left everyone singing the praising of Mr. Amberg.

If you enjoy Sandford's "Prey" books, you will enjoy this!
By A Customer
Jay Amberg's "Blackbird Singing" is a sensational thriller, that one only hopes is the first of many. Tom Hopkins, the lead detective in a much publicized kidnapping, is very likeable and believable. As a reader you will want to become better acquainted with him. What we do learn is that he is able to match wits with the cunning, delusional, computer-genius kidnapper who has captured the daughter of the famous Chicagoland basketball hero, Robert "Sky" Walker. We also learn that he is as vunerable as the rest of us. If you are a fan of John Sandford's "Prey" books or Robert Tannenbaum's many thrillers, you will enjoy Jay Amberg's "Blackbird Singing".

Deep Water: The Epic Struggle over Dams, Displaced People, and the Environment, by Jacques Leslie

A Discover Magazine Top Science Book of the Year

A Northern California Book Award Finalist

There are more than 45,000 of them in the world. They have altered the speed of the planet's rotation, the tilt of its axis, and the shape of its gravitational field. They influence landscapes and societies. They are dams, and in Deep Water, Jacques Leslie offers an incisive, searching, and beautifully written account of the emerging crisis over dams and the world's water. Reporting in the tradition of John McPhee and Peter Matthiessen, Leslie examines the crisis through the lives of three people: Medha Patkar, the world's foremost anti-dam activist; Thayer Scudder, an American anthropologist; and Don Blackmore, an Australian water manager. In each of these engrossing portraits, Leslie shows how dams seduce national leaders with seeming bounties of water and power but end up producing blights on the citizenry and landscape. Deep Water is an eloquent and important book about the water crisis and a startling look at the fate of our planet.

From Publishers Weekly
This worthy but difficult book looks at large dams and their consequences through the eyes of three members of the 1990s' World Commission on Dams. Indian activist Medha Patkar planned to drown herself to protest the Sardar Sarovar dam's displacement of several hundred thousand people. Thayer Scudder, a dam resettlement expert and consultant to the World Bank, stopped a dam that would have destroyed Botswana's Okavango Delta. Don Blackmore, in Australia, where dams are a virtual necessity, has to regulate "the dozens of variables that affect the health of a river basin" during an acute drought. Leslie's (The Mark: A War Correspondent's Memoir of Vietnam and Cambodia) intent was to "see dams whole," and he conveys the complex, disheartening issues surrounding them. Whether the reader can see dams whole is another question. Leslie is capable of both punchy and lyrical writing. But with the flood of detail, from the mechanics of dam financing to the water sources for African villages, the book becomes a hard slog. A draft of this unquestionably informative and eye-opening book won the J. Anthony Lukas Work-in-Progress Award, but it will need a devoted reader to get the last drop of good out of it. (Sept.)

From Booklist
During the twentieth century, 45,000 large dams were built in 140 countries, complicated projects that are now being recognized as major environmental and humanitarian disasters. Add to that the fact that freshwater is the most precious and endangered resource on the planet, and journalist Leslie has chosen one hot topic. His extensive research and demanding journeys to controversial dam sites around the world result in solid documentation of the often-corrupt finances and politics of dam building and the cruelty and injustice of the displacement of (usually) indigenous communities and the submergence of their land. Leslie also offers lucid explanations of how dams cause aridity, erosion, extinction, and pollution. Indelible portraits of three dedicated individuals put a human face on the subject. Medha Patkar, India's leading antidam activist, has put her life at risk to protest the forced displacement of tribal communities. Anthropologist Thayer Scudder is "the world's leading dam resettlement expert." Don Blackmore is devoted to rectifying dam-related problems in Australia. Leslie's edgy, potent, and in-depth inquiry unveils the drastic, unintentional consequences of dams and exposes yet more evidence of the catastrophic results of allowing greed and politics to trump science and justice. Fascinating and Disturbing
By William Maya
Jacques Leslie writes detailed reports on the development of major dam systems in India, Southern Africa, and Australia. He examines all aspects of the politics involved in planning and financing these dams through the World Bank. He also describes on how these projects focus only on the main "benefits" of the dams such as irrigation or hydro power to the detriment of everything else including mass resettlement of local (poor) peoples that sound too similar to the constanting shifting of native peoples in the United States to make room for "civilization" and "development." In the process Leslie goes in to significant detail on the history, ecology, anthropology, and economics of these regions. This book should have received five stars, but for glaring omissions of the publisher. There is no index and no list of sources. Leslie is a journalist and this book reads like a series in a magazine. His content is wonderful and should not be missed. However, the editors should have included more detailed maps of the areas being discussed and diagrams or photographs of the dams would also have greatly added to the work (not even the cover photo has anything to do with the dams under discussion). In addition, Leslie had worked with photographers on some of these investigations and photographs of the dams and the areas in question would have been very helpful. Google Earth is a good backup to fill this void, but it seems like the publisher wanted to save money in publishing this book. As a result, Leslie's work is first rate, but the book as a whole has limited usefullness.

Borderliners: A Novel, by Peter Høeg

National Bestseller

Strange things are happening at Biehl's Academy when this elite school opens its doors to a group of orphans and reform-school rejects, kids at the end of the system's tether. But the school is run by a peculiar set of rules by which every minute is regimented and controlled. The children soon suspect that they are guinea pigs in a bizarre social experiment, and that their only hope of escape is to break through a dangerous threshold of time and space. Peter Høeg's "brilliant" and dystopian Borderliners is a "uniquely philosophical thriller" (Boston Sunday Globe) and a haunting story of childhood travail and hope.

From Publishers Weekly
In Hoeg's previous book, the thriller Smilla's Sense of Snow, the psychological insights and background detail were more gripping than the action scenes. Here, he has largely eschewed action and produced a story of psychological suspense in which the sense of menace is nearly palpable. This is a bleak, heartbreaking tale of gallant, desperately frightened children accepted on probation by an elite private school near Copenhagen. The narrator, Peter, was 14 when he arrived there, after anguished years in other institutions. Yet this school is even more frightening: both tyrannical mind control and physical violence are used to intimidate the students, in the name of scientific "improvement." Peter makes friends with two other "borderliners," the orphaned Katarina and August, a psychotic youngster who has repressed the fact that he killed his parents because they tortured and abused him. Together these damaged children strive to understand the goals of what they intuit as the school's "grand plan." They also have reason to inquire into the nature of time, for the traumas they have experienced have left them unsure of what constitutes reality. Hoeg succeeds brilliantly in conveying the fear of children who are helpless against brutal adult authority. His speculations about time, the principles of education and moral values are equally impressive, but those expecting a conventional thriller may find these passages digressive and heavy-handed. In the end, after all the portentous references to "the plan," its eventual unveiling is anticlimactic. And the disparity between the school's supposedly noble objective and its wretched practices strains credibility. The book, like the plan, is a laudable effort that falls somewhat short of its goals. Hoeg retains a shocker for the closing pages, however, leading readers to speculate about the autobiographical elements of the story. 75,000 first printing.

From Library Journal
In this extraordinary novel, Hoeg portrays the closed world of Biehl's, a Danish private school where a bizarre social experiment is underway. The narrator, Peter, is now a student at Biehl's after spending all of his life in children's homes and reform schools. He is a borderline case, along with Katarina, whose parents both died in the past year, and August, severely disturbed after killing his abusive parents. Although allowed no social interaction, the children conspire to conduct their own experiment to discover what plan is being carried out at Biehl's. Hoeg touches on some of the same themes as in his acclaimed Smilla's Sense of Snow (LJ 8/93)-neglected children, scientific experiments, and technology-but this is not a thriller and may not appeal to the same audience. It is instead a fascinating intellectual puzzle that explores the themes of social control, child assessment, family, and the concept of time. Highly recommended.

From Booklist
After the astounding critical and popular success of his first book (Smilla's Sense of Snow, 1993), it wouldn't be entirely unexpected if Hoeg produced a less-successful sequel. But his second novel--a complete departure from Smilla--is even more brilliantly stunning than his first. Borderliners focuses on a 14-year-old orphan named, oddly, Peter Hoeg. Hoeg has been incarcerated in custodial institutions all of his young life, and he matter-of-factly recounts the cruelties of daily life that he has come to accept as normal. His latest "home" is Biehl's School, where most students are academically gifted and from good backgrounds. Peter can't understand why he has been allowed to join these exalted ranks, but he soon finds that other of society's "borderliners" have also been brought to the school. Among these misfits, he is attracted to the older, wiser Katarina and to August, a tiny murderer who killed his parents after years of suffering unimaginable abuse. The three begin to believe there is a grand scheme behind their placement at the school, that the staff may be conducting a strange and misguided experiment that could end in disaster. Hoeg's story reveals a harsh and grotesque world in which most of us could never survive. But it also suggests that there is hope--in the form of peace, if not happiness--for those like Peter who have been the victims of life. Disturbing, brilliant, and searing. Emily Melton

Ambitious, Flawed, and Very Worthwhile
By E. Scoles
It's difficult for me to think of this book separately from Hoeg's first, _A History of Danish Dreams_, which reads like a fever-dream-version of _Borderliners_. Both are obsessed with the passage (or seeming failure to pass) of time, and with certain elements of pagan and Lutheran symbolism. Both are populated by characters surviving in the midst of nearly Kafkaesque madness by distancing themselves from the world and the people in it. The two books feed one another: I think that, if it's feasible, you should read the older book first.

_Borderliners_ is more polished than either _Smilla..._ or _...History..._, but it grows rough toward the end, as Hoeg draws closer to the real subject of the story. Even as the prose grows awkward, though, and even as the narrative becomes more detached as it approaches the present, those facts somehow make it even more effective.

This is not an easy book to read, emotionally, nor is it a simple book to understand. It can be construed as an indictment of "special education" or progressivism, but it should not be: It's simply the story that it is, and shouldn't be approached with any preconceptions.

Nightkill, by F. Paul Wilson, Steve Lyon

"Nightkill" is a taut medical thriller of crooked politicians, an assassin with a tarnished heart of gold, and the mob that is out to get him...and a single-minded medical researcher who would use them all for his own profit. Jake Nacht is a man who knows how to take risks and believes in justice, even if it is of the skewed sort. He's one of the best at what he does - and what he does is kill people for a living. But it's a young man's game and he wants out. He goes on one last hit, is double-crossed, and is left completely paralyzed. The mob thinks Nacht's a done deal. What they don't know is that a brilliant doctor has developed a dangerous and deadly new therapy. If he succeeds, Jake Nacht will not only walk again but just might have a shot at revenge.

From Library Journal
This is a dazzling collaboration by Wilson (Deep as the Marrow, LJ 12/96) and Lyon, author of several other medical thrillers. Jake Nacht is a mob assassin who as a youth is shuttled between foster homes and ends up with a sharpshooter named Sarge, who trains Jake to be a crack shot, then betrays him. Jake kills Sarge and takes over the family business as a mob sniper. He is later shot and paralyzed on a fumbled job and wants to die, until risky surgery by the daring Dr. Graham restores his damaged spine. Love for his rehab nurse, Angel, brings Jake fully back to life and changes him; after months of wanting to kill his nemesis, he centers the cross hairs on Fredo but has trouble pulling the trigger. There are many satisfying characters, and, despite some jarring changes of viewpoint, the pace is as rapid as an accelerated heartbeat. Recommended for thriller collections.?Molly Gorman, San Marino, Cal.

From Kirkus Reviews
Semimedical thriller by Wilson, a practicing physician (Deep as the Marrow, p. 95, etc.) and sometime horror novelist (The Select, 1994, etc.), who joins Lyon, also a novelist of medical thrillers, to produce a mob/medical story without a hint of the occult. Jake Nacht, a hit man with 17 kills, works for the mob on a freelance basis. As he sees it, he's helping haul out the trash by killing mobsters. An orphan, Jake is the adopted son of Sarge, an ex-Marine sniper with some 250 wartime kills. Sarge, who may or may not be psychotic, served for some time as a mob assassin, and has done well by his efforts. He trains Jake to perfection, then dies in a confrontation gone wrong: He forces Jake to kill him in a variation of ``the most dangerous game'' of human hunting human. Later, the remorseless Jake quickly becomes one of the mob's most reliable freelancers--until, that is, he's caught in a double- cross. Mr. C., a mob godfather, has his henchman Fredo hire Jake to kill US Senator Weingarten during a speech at an outdoor rally. Despite misgivings, Jake sets about the job, but just as he's about to take the senator out he learns that he's been set up. Shot by a detective who's been tipped off to his presence, Jake is paralyzed, his spine severed. But there's no evidence against him, and he's likely to collect a cool $5 million from the city. It doesn't matter: A depressed Jake starts on rehab convinced that he would rather die. Then nurse Angela and her uncle Dr. Graham sneak him into a new, highly experimental program aimed at rebuilding spinal cords. Jake recovers, secretly, and sets out to avenge himself on Mr. C and Fredo. Fast-moving, yes. Inventive, no. -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Review
"Refreshingly offbeat, fast-paced medical thriller...The slam-bang action is addictive."--Publishers Weekly

"A dazzling collaboration by Wilson and Spruill....The pace is as rapid as an accelerated heartbeat."--Library Journal

Same old story
By Paul Legerski
NIGHTKILL is a novel about a sniper for the Mob, who gets set-up, paralyzed and recovers through a "new" surgery, and enacts revenge against one of the players of the Mob. It is marketed as a medical thriller, but believe me, it's a thriller with an emphasis on some horrible outcomes. Jake Nacht is a sniper for the Mob. After 17 successive kills, he is set-up, shot and paralyzed by a crooked cop, who is in on the set-up. While recovering, Jake meets Angel, a beautiful nurse whos uncle just happens to be on the verge of a successful new surgery to fix paralysis.

After the surgery Jake goes on a revenge mission to get who set him up. In the process Jake falls in love with Angel, who is now being held hostage by the bad guy.

As you can tell by my synopsis, its kind of a paint-by-numbers scenario. Everything is familiar and done by rote. This is not to say that the book is unenjoyable. Far from it. It's full of action sequences but the main problem is there are no surprises...everything IS as it seems and we are just awaiting the final shoot of so we can move on to the next book on the shelves. Not a very distinguishing book.

Not recommended.

Several notches above typical action/adventure fare
By Amazon Customer
With seventeen kills to his name, Jake Nacht is one of the mob's most reliable hitmen-he'll kill anyone if the price is right. Thus, he accepts a contract on a US Senator, despite his misgivings about having to do the job at a particular time and place. Nacht prepares carefully, but has to hurry his shot when he hears the police knocking on his hotel room door. Thinking quickly, Nacht almost escapes, but is gunned down by an officer who obviously knows who he is.

Paralyzed from the neck down, Nacht wants only to end his existence, but cannot do it alone. He strikes a desperate bargain with his nurse, Angela Graham, who reluctantly promises to assist his suicide if Nacht's physical rehabilitation is unsuccessful. Nacht gives it his all, but shows little improvement after four months. Having fulfilled his end of the bargain Nacht wants to hold Angela to her promise, but she has different ideas. Angela implores Jake to participate in an experiment conducted by her uncle, a scientist who wants to test risky spinal regeneration techniques on humans. Intrigued by the possibility of recovery and revenge on the men who set him up, Nacht agrees.

Jake is healed by the process, but does not know if the effects are permanent Since his time may be short, he immediately embarks on a campaign of vengeance, halting only when Angela is kidnapped in retaliation. Jake must face his enemies on their own ground if he is to save Angela and have his revenge.

Nightkill does not break any new ground, but is a good, solid read, several notches above typical action/adventure fare. Wilson and Lyon (aka Steven Spruill) take great pains to create a believable, engrossing backstory for Nacht, which metamorphosizes into a homage to the movie The Most Dangerous Game. Although Nacht's history is often more interesting than the action of the main story, it never totally eclipses it--the authors skillfully bring the novel to an explosive conclusion, providing ample thrills and drama along the way. Reminiscent of Stephen Hunter's novel Point of Impact and the Steven Seagal movie Hard to Kill, Nightkill is fast moving and hard hitting, a respectful tribute to the men's action/adventure genre.
