Silence and Narrative: The Early Novels of Gertrude Stein (Contributions in Women's Studies), by Janice L Doane

Making use of recent feminist critical theory, Doane considers Gertrude Stein's modernist preoccupation with narrative silence in her early novels. She demonstrates the effects of this preoccupation on Stein's literary development, from the conventionality of her first novel, Q.E.D., through Fernhurst and Three Lives, to the radical transgressions against narrative intelligibility in The Making Of Americans. Doane, contending that Stein's ultimate revolt against traditional modes of discourse is directly attributable to her position as a woman writer, effectively elaborates the possibilities of creating an alternative feminist discourse and explores the ways in which gender may contribute to meaning.

Disappointing
By DaVincis Muse
As someone who generally prefers Let's Go travel guides for budget information, and dry sense of humor, I was terribly disappointed with the quality of their 2009 edition of this book (2009 is the copyright date).

While I understand that some information in guide books is going to be obsolete simply due to the printing process, I don't expect it to be this obsolete.

For example: The book references the Piliani Highway on Maui re-opening sometime in late 2008. The highway, according to several internet sources (including local newspapers) was actually reopened in October 2007. This, unfortunately, isn't the only place this occurs.

Coverage of The Big Island was so bad I bought a different book during my trip.
By Kevin Septor
I just returned from a 3 week low budget trip to Hawaii's big island and I have only the faintest of praise for this travel guide. Let me tell you about why I selected this guide in the first place.

The front page features quotes from newspaper & magazine reviews with gems such as "The guides are aimed not only at young budget travelers", "Let's Go follows the creed that you don't have to toss your life's savings to the wind to travel", and "all the dirt, dirt cheap." And over on the 4th to last page Let's Go describes itself as a company that can "show you just how far your money can go."

Alright. So this book should give me the skinny on how to make it 3 weeks on the cheap, right? Wrong wrong wrong! And with a 2009 copyright date you'd think this would be the most up to date guide? Better than Lonely Planet's Hawaii: The Big Island (Regional Guide) guide from 2008, eh? Wrong wrong wrong! The front says information was compiled May - Aug 2008 but that's a damn lie as far as the Big Island is concerned.

Here's a small list of errors I can recall offhand:
* Spencer Beach Park is never mentioned in the book. Really, it's not in the list of county parks nor on the map.
* Volcano's Lava Rock Cafe does not have free wifi (as claimed on page 221), it's $10 a day (as claimed on page 220).
* The map of Puna twice, twice(!) labels an area with "active lava ows", you know, flows.
* Business hours for Waimea Coffe Co are wrong.
* Quoted price range for the Dolphin Bay Hotel is from the last decade
* No mention of the multi-million dollar Isaac Hale Beach Park renovations

I think the problem with the coverage of Hawaii, and likely the problem with this series in general is its charter which "unfortunately [only] enables us to employ currently enrolled Harvard students." What are the chances that Philip "Beamer" Eisele, the fellow that covered the big island is a local? Slim and none. There's no way that from a talent pool limited to current Harvard students are you going to find a local from every part of the world that wants to write for your book series.

Halfway through the trip in Hilo I purchased the digital copy of the big island section from Lonely Planet's Hawaii (Regional Guide) online. It rocks! All the little details are amazing. Like the note on how the winds pick up at night in Hapuna beach's cabins (they really do!). Ah, anyway, just go buy either of the Lonely Planet guides instead of this monster.

Antarctica, by Helen Cowcher

Far, far south, in the strange and beautiful land of Antarctica, it is dark both day and night all winter long. When at last spring comes, the penguins and seals raise their young. But, one year, loud, unfamiliar sounds announce the arrival of a new presence―one the animals hope can share this fragile world with them in peace.

From Publishers Weekly
Dramatic illustrations deftly blend light and shadow as they depict the rigorous--and threatened--existence of "emperor penguins, Weddell seals and Adelie penguins" on the frozen continent. Ages 5-8.
Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2 --In story form, Cowcher attempts to describe life for emperor and Adelie penguins and Weddell seals during one Antarctic winter and spring as they nest, give birth, and raise their young. Harsh weather makes survival difficult, but the true enemy may be the men who have a base camp near the Adelies' nesting area; their helicopter frightens the penguins away, allowing the predatory skuas access to their eggs. A few instances of anthropomorphism are unfortunate and glaringly intrusive: an emperor penguin is described as huddling with "his friends," and the story closes with the seals and penguins wondering whether ". . . the new arrivals . . . will share or destroy their beautiful Antarctica . . ." Some of the watercolor illustrations are too cute--baby emperor penguins and Weddell seals have the round-faced quality of the worst greeting-card art. Others are misleading--"a ferocious leopard seal," enemy to the penguins, appears to be a gentle, smiling creature, and a drawing of the emperor penguins trudging back to their rookery looks like the penguins are walking on water, with huge waves behind them. Since little is available on this level that deals directly with the problems facing Antarctica, most libraries will want to add this to their collections; its didactic but important message outweighs its faults. --Ellen Fader, Westport Public Library, CT

Review

“Stunningly vivid and gorgeous pictures . . . The briskly minimal text is clear, informative, and astute.” ―Entertainment Weekly

“A spectacular book.” ―The Horn Book

“Visually dazzling.” ―The New York Times Book Review

“Dramatic illustrations deftly blend light and shadow as they depict the rigorous--and threatened--existence of emperor penguins, Weddell seals, and Adélie penguins on the frozen continent.” ―Publishers Weekly

“[A] handsome, eloquent defense of a threatened environment. In simple text and elegantly designed double-spread paintings . . . Cowcher describes the behavior of three species that share a common habitat; then shows how . . . the presence of man can disrupt the nesting of thousands.” ―Kirkus Reviews

scaring children about impending environmental catastrophe
By Philip Greenspun
Does a 4-year-old need to live in fear that Antarctica is going to be destroyed by human development? The author seems to think so. She describes penguins abandoning nests because a helicopter lands nearby and penguins freaking out due to the sounds of an icebreaker. First, a Google image search for "penguin helicopter" will show plenty of penguins standing next to helicopters, both parked and operating. Ditto for icebreaking ships. Second, Antarctica is about half the size of North America and there are never more than a handful of ships and helicopters operating there at any one time. The continent might conceivably melt one day due to human activity in temperate regions but it is not exactly about to be torn down for condo development.

Research has shown that tourism doesn't seem to have much effect on penguin colonies, despite the fact that several thousand tourists may walk right up to a given penguin colony during a season. The tourists show up with a big cruise ship offshore, a noisy Zodiac to land, tripods, cameras, etc.

Antarctic tourism and research are not growing especially fast and they have a long way to go before boots (or helicopter skids) on the ground have a significant impact on a 5.4 million square mile continent. Why try to convince children otherwise? So that they will grow up and vote to stop funding scientific expeditions to the frozen South?

Beautiful illustrations
By A Customer
The first thing that drew me to this nonfiction book was the gorgeous illustrations by Cowcher. They are beautiful. Her use of "cool" colors such as blue, purple, green, and gray add to the wonder of this book. If you are a teacher, this would make a great addition to your personal library to use with units on penguins or Antarctica. It also comes in a "big book" format and is worth the money!

The evening news is more cheerful
By Veronica Cannady
How did this book get a 4 star rating? The illustrations are nice but the story tragically ends with all the penguins' eggs dying because the Penguin parents were scared off by a helicopter.

People in Antartica are there for research and conservation, even if this author wanted to impart a lesson the story handles it grotesquely.

I read books first before sharing them with my toddler. I will never read her this book.

From Publishers Weekly
Lee Bouvier Radziwill's lifelong rivalry with her older sister, the late Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, was intrinsic to each woman's identity and fueled their individuality, according to this perceptive, unauthorized biography. New York-based freelance journalist DuBois portrays Radziwill as a desperately insecure, manipulative yet vulnerable woman whose descent into alcoholism multiplied her woes and left her children, Anthony and Tina, adrift and forlorn. Her recovery was assisted by third husband Herbert Ross, the Hollywood director, whom she wed in 1988 after two unhappy marriages-first to drunken homebody Michael Canfield, adopted son of publisher Cass Canfield, and next to Polish emigre prince Stanislas Radziwill, a London real estate mogul with whom, she belatedly discovered, she had little in common. DuBois traces her subject's insecurity to her divorcing parents-the alcoholic, philandering Wall Street stockbroker John Bouvier III and the ambitious, dominant Janet Norton Lee-who used their daughters as instruments of revenge in a bitter, ongoing feud. DuBois nicely sets Lee Radziwill's social whirl with Rudolf Nureyev, Andy Warhol, Truman Capote and Diana Vreeland against a disconcerting portrait of a "soul of bluff and illusion." Engrossing and Titillating but Ultimately Sad
By Jonster
It's old, and I had to order it in paperback, but, in my opinion, this is one of the best books on the Bouvier sisters ever written. Ms. Dubois gathered quotes and anecdotes from practically everyone Radziwill knew in her lifetime. Universally disliked, Radziwill is an aristocratic gold-digger extraordinaire and when she marries Herbert Ross the reader finds out the lengths to which Radziwill will go to in order to finance her lavish lifestyle. I recently read an interview with Radziwill where she trashed the memory of Ross, her last husband and I thought, "Par for the course." He died shortly after their divorce without hearing from her, except to squabble over a house in East Hampton. She knew he was dying and she figured she'd wait it out, thereby robbing Ross' children of the sole remaining asset of his estate. What a shameless, sad person she is. She lacked the warmth that her sister had, as well as the charisma. Jackie, a compassionate woman, cut her sister completely out of her will when she died, though, interestingly, she set up trust funds for Radziwill's children. That, alone, should tell you the type of person Lee Radziwill is.

Afterimage (Chris Sinclair), by Jay Brandon

District Attorney Chris Sinclair has never really forgotten his first real love, Jean, a college girlfriend from the era of free love, a wild young woman who introduced him to a world of sex and drugs and alcohol drastically unlike is own. But she left his life in college and he's never seen her since, until a young woman is found buried in a shallow grave on the outskirts of San Antonio. Through forensic reconstruction of the decomposed skull, a face takes shape. A detail or two is different, but there's no doubt the face is Jean's, like an after image in his mind, he sees her face in the young girl's and he knows. What he doesn't know is why Jean wouldn't have reported her own daughter's disappearance; the body had been buried for months.

Amazon.com Review
District Attorney Chris Sinclair is stunned by the resemblance between the forensically reconstructed face of a 14-year-old murder victim and the college sweetheart he hasn't seen for almost two decades. Although the girl was gone from home for three months before her body was found in a shallow grave on the outskirts of San Antonio, she'd never been reported missing. And when Chris finds her mother, Jean, he discovers two more equally shocking facts: Kristen, the murdered teenager, has an older sister, Clarissa, who is Chris's own daughter; and Clarissa is missing too.

Sinclair's troubled feelings compel his very personal interest in saving the child he's never met, and in tracking down the presumed perpetrator of both crimes--a shadowy Fagin-like businessman named Raleigh Pentell who controls a gang of young thieves and supplies them and their classmates with illegal drugs as well. Managing to rescue Clarissa from her captivity, Chris assembles a difficult and circumstantial case against Pentell. But in the process of bringing him to justice, Chris discovers that Jean, who lived a little outside the law when they were lovers, may have been involved in her daughters' murder and abduction.

While the denouement is a bit long in coming, the growing relationships between Chris and his daughter and between Clarissa and adolescent psychologist Anne Greenwald, Chris's fiancée, are enough to sustain one's interest until the end; Brandon is an accomplished writer with atypical insight into his characters' emotional lives, which are movingly explicated. Jean remains an enigma and not as fully explored as she might have been. Although not an entirely sympathetic figure, she lingers in the reader's mind after the other characters have faded away. --Jane Adams

From Publishers Weekly
Although Brandon's latest isn't quite up to the high standards of his Edgar-nominated Fade to Heat, it's still an engrossing legal thriller, dominated by three complex and original female characters. San Antonio District Attorney Chris Sinclair is understandably startled when he sees the head of a murder victim modeled by a forensic artist: it bears a striking resemblance to his wild college lover, Jean, who dumped him 16 years ago. But Jean would be 35, Sinclair's age, and the murdered girl found buried in a shallow roadside grave was just 14. Chris and his investigator quickly locate Jean, the mother not only of the dead girl, Kristen, but also of a 16-year-old, Clarissa, who is probably Sinclair's child. All three are somehow involved in the dangerous world of local businessman Raleigh Pentell, who sells drugs to teenagers; during Pentell's trial for Kirsten's murder, Jean's image changes from a caring mother supporting two children by working for an insurance company to a conniving drug dealer using her children for profit. Sinclair sometimes comes across as a bit too thick to have survived as either Jean's lover or a major urban prosecutor, but the dangerously ambiguous Jean, the deceptively fragile Clarissa and Chris's current love interest--Dr. Anne Greenwald, a psychiatrist determined to have a child--are strong enough characters to keep readers interested. From Kirkus Reviews
From the moment Chris Sinclair, district attorney of San Antonio, Texas, sees the head modeled by a forensic sculptor, his life is in free-fall. The head is that of a young girl of about 14 whom Chris is certain he knowsthough hes wrong. The girl so vivid in his memory was 19 some16 years ago. Her name was Jean Plymouth, and Chris had been wildly in love with her. Now it turns out that Kristen Lorenz was Jeans daughterpast tense because Kristen was murdered, her neck broken and her body found half-buried at the side of a little-used country road. Chris is thoroughly shaken. At first he wonders whether the child was his. Impossible, certainlybut then he discovers the existence of Clarissa, Jeans older daughter, who very well could be his. Reconnecting with Jean opens a whole series of disturbing questions. Prominent among them is why she never reported Kristen missing. It was, she explains, because of the villainous Raleigh Pentrell, who at the time held Clarissa captive, threatening harm to her if Jean went to the police. Pentrell, a drug dealer, a child exploiter, a low-life if ever there was one, gives Jeans explanation at least surface plausibility. But is it the truth? Well, it is and it isnt, we learnthough in more detail than really requiredduring the course of one of Brandons patented (read: exhaustive) courtroom battles. As always (Angel of Death, 1998, etc.), Brandon starts with interesting people, but, again as alwayssince his Edgar-nominated Fade the Heat (1990)his affinity for soapy plotting diminishes them. -- Copyright ©2000, Kirkus Associates, LP. WOW
By callie cat
I have read all of this author's books, as well as all of the books of John Grisham (both lawyers), and can say that Mr. Brandon's works compare very favorably with Mr. Grisham's; Certainly Afterimage is MUCH BETTER than Mr. Grisham's latest (THE BRETHEN)!. This is also J.B's best in that it will keep the reader involved from the first paragraph to the last. Much sentiment, very mysterious, much love, and many touching remembrances.Congratulations to Mr. Brandon!

A Creaking Plot
By John Bowes
The author gets a lot of his law right, but then wants us to believe that the DA does his own investigating, even doing a little b&e on the side. Too much to buy.

BRANDON'S LAW
By Michael Butts
This is my first Jay Brandon novel, and after reading this well-crafted thriller, I am going to try and catch up on his other works.
Brandon's plot is as thick as thieves, and he masterfully winds the reader through the involved story. Young District Attorney Chris Sinclair finds himself drawn into his past as a young girls body found in a shallow grave turns out to be the daughter of his college sweetheart. Further problems ensue when he finds out that the girl has an older sister, Clarissa, who just might be his daughter.
Sinclair digs deep to find the child's killer and rescue his supposedly kidnapped daughter. The killer is apprehended, but it's up to Sinclair with very little evidence to bring the man to justice.
There are several unexpected twists and turns and a tight, tense denouement.
There's lots of good legal writers out there, and I add Jay Brandon to the list!

Important information, beautifully written.
By Dorthea M. Seybold
The final chapter of the book "Bread of Angels: Sustenance and Hope for Caregivers of Elderly Parents" Sustenance and Hope for Caregivers of Elderly Parents: The Bread of Angels (The Praeger Series on Contemporary Health and Living)is really the beginning of the story for author Gloria Barsamian. As she describes the "good death" of her grandfather, (lovingly surrounded by a large Italian family), the reader is able to understand the power that moment had for the young Gloria and the richness that she brings to this wonderful book and to her life. Now in her 70's, Gloria has vast professional experience helping families care for their loved ones. She shares her own deeply personal stories, her expertise and the realities of caring for the elderly in a way that gives the reader not only practical advice, but also hope and affirmation. Having just lost my own Mother after an extended illness, the book helped me to understand the emotional roller coaster I and my sisters experienced. Written by s retired social worker with 28 years of experience
By Midwest Book Review
"Sustenance and Hope for Caregivers of Elderly parents; The Bread of Angels" is a welcome resource created to support adult children of elderly parents in need of care. Written by s retired social worker with 28 years of experience helping adult children and their parents deal with demanding illnesses, "Bread of Angels" is unique in its emphasis on redefining and reinventing both caregiving and care-receiving. The fundamental paradigm shift seems to be from a view fraught with anxiety and dread of crushing responsibilities and duties to a view of parental caregiving as a rite of passage, with potential to enrich both the caregiver and the care receiver, based upon a sense of mutual reciprocity that can enrich and renew the relationship(s) between adult child caregiver and parent. Such a challenge is thoroughly investigated in the thirteen chapters of "Bread of Angels." In these chapters, individual case experiences are interwoven with apt literature quotations and worked into nuggets of pithy wisdom for today's adult caregivers. Always, flexible, always searching for the way to new growth and acceptance, "Bread of Angels" delivers much more than many practical specific suggestions and techniques (which it also contains in abundance). It is as though the author suggests caregivers use their experiences something like a mirror that looks both forwards and backwards in time, asking themselves, "How do you want to feel about this in your future, or be remembered for this by others who follow and perhaps give care to you?" In all, "Bread of Angels" provides a stimulating new focus for those who choose to face the challenges of caregiving with imagination, humility, grace and compassion. In so providing this multifaceted resource, author Gloria Barsamian has enriched all.

One Danielle Rayne wheeled her suitcase into the elevator and turned around. As the doors closed, her gaze caught on two tall, attractive men, one with short tousled sandy blond hair and one with light brown hair neatly tied back in a ponytail. They were crossing the hotel lobby toward the reception desk, both stylishly dressed in slim-fi t jeans.
Oh my God. Trey and Jake.
The two men she had fantasized about for almost fi f-teen years. Two men who had haunted her dreams. Kissing her. Holding her. Her cheeks fl ushed as hot, sweaty images from those dreams rippled through her mind.
The older woman standing beside her glanced her way. “Are you okay?” she asked, kind blue eyes taking in Danielle’s burning crimson cheeks.
“Yes, fine thank you. Just a bit of a cold coming on,” she lied.
She took a deep breath and tried to steady her racing heart. As much as she yearned to be with Jake... or Trey... or both... it would never be. Because Jake and Trey were in love... with each other.
At least, they used to be. When she knew them in college.
Were they still together? They had arrived at the hotel together. Of course, that wasn’t such a surprise. A lot of the old gang would be here. Danielle had flown to Buff alo to attend her old friend Harmony’s wedding.
Old friend? Well, more like an acquaintance now. She and Harmony could have had a close friendship, but Danielle hadn’t kept in touch, even though Harmony had tried for a while. She’d sent e-mails, Christmas cards, letters.
Danielle had always intended to write her back, but never seemed to get around to it. Eventually Harmony’s e-mails and cards tapered off, and then stopped completely.
Danielle didn’t mean to sabotage her chances at friendship, but somehow, by inattentiveness, she always seemed to manage it. Well, no use beating herself up about it. She was here now and that was all that mattered.
The elevator doors opened on the fi fteenth fl oor. She smiled at the lady beside her and stepped from the elevator, then pulled her suitcase behind her down the long hallway toward her room.
“You’re in room 1512, Mr. Garner. I hope you enjoy your stay.”
Trey glanced at the lovely desk clerk’s name tag, and then returned her smile with an added wink. “Thank you, Georgia.”
Her cheeks fl ushed slightly.
Jake nudged Trey’s arm as they stepped away from the desk. “Stop fl irting with the poor woman,” Jake said with a grin. “You know it’s not going to go anywhere.”
“Why do you think that?” Trey asked as they approached the elevator.
“Well, for one reason, because we’ve already made dinner plans for tonight.”
Trey pushed the elevator call button. “Sure, but then there’s tomorrow.”
He glanced across the lobby at the lovely blonde Georgia as she consulted her computer. She swept her long waves of silky hair back over her shoulder, then glanced up to see his gaze directed at her. She smiled luminously, then returned her gaze to her current client, but Trey could tell the woman was interested. Very interested.
“And who knows... maybe Georgia would be interested in joining us tonight.”
Jake chuckled. The elevator doors whooshed open and he followed Trey inside.
“Nice of you to share, but surely you can do without a woman for one night. I thought we’d do some catching up.”
Trey grinned and shrugged. “Well, I guess I could try. But just ’cause we’re such good friends.”
The doors opened and Jake exited the elevator, followed by Trey.
“Down this way,” Jake said as he headed left down the hallway. “I think they’re the two at the end of the hall.”
Danielle unzipped the vinyl cover and removed the aqua dress she intended to wear to the wedding tomorrow, then hung it in the closet. She heard male voices in the hall and peered out the peephole. Jake and Trey walked by her room.
Good heavens, they were on the same floor. In fact, since hers was the second-to- last room from the end, they must be in the room next to hers, or across the hall from that one.
They were definitely still together, Danielle decided. They’d arrived together and now it seemed they were in the same room. She smiled. They had been so in love in college, and that had had a big impact on her. She heard a door open, then click closed.
Although she would love it if the men were free and single... and liked women... it made her heart swell to think that their relationship could last so long. She hadn’t experienced much of that... relationships that lasted. Nothing in her life had been stable, and the thought that someone else could make a go of a relationship, could actually find another person to depend on, to love, and who loved him back... it made her feel a little better about the world.
Trey crossed the lobby toward the lounge, then stepped into the dimly lit room and glanced around. When he’d called Jake to see if he was ready for dinner, Jake had needed another twenty minutes for a shower, so Trey had said he’d wait for him here.
“Hey there.”
Trey glanced around to see a woman with long fl owing blond hair behind him.
“Hello, Georgia. You look lovely this eve ning.”
She’d changed from her uniform into a halter-style floral dress. The form-fitting bodice set off her slim fi gure. She was sexy and feminine, and definite interest sparkled in her grayish blue eyes. He was interested, too, but he’d promised to spend the eve ning with Jake.
“I just got off work and... when I saw you heading in here, I wondered if we could grab a drink together? Maybe dinner, if you’re free?”
“I’m meeting a friend for dinner, but...” He smiled and took her hand, then kissed it. “I could join you for a quick drink.”
Jake entered the lounge and saw Trey sitting at a table in the corner. Jake’s heart still clenched whenever he saw Trey. His warm brown eyes that glittered with golden specks, his strong square jaw, his full sensual lips... even the glint of his diamond earring... all reminded Jake of what he’d lost when Trey had decided to shift their relationship to one of friends rather than lovers. And the friendship had worked for the years they’d been in college when they’d shared a town house with Angela and Nikki, but now... They lived in the same town—even worked at the same place— yet hardly saw each other. Jake just found it too hard to see Trey and not be with him.
As Jake walked across the room, a young woman with blond hair approached Trey’s table and sat down, setting her purse on a spare chair. Georgia from reception. Jake noticed two drinks on the table.
Georgia said something to Trey and he laughed; then he glanced up and saw Jake approach the table.
“Jake, you remember Georgia.”
“Of course.” He smiled, but inside, jealousy swirled through him. Trey would no doubt have chosen to spend a casual eve ning of sex with this woman if Jake hadn’t already booked the eve ning with him.
And why not? She was beautiful and sexy. Hell, if Trey hadn’t been interested in her, Jake would have been. After all, there was no reason either one of them shouldn’t pursue an attractive woman. It wasn’t like there was anything between Jake and Trey anymore.
Trey had totally moved on, Jake reminded himself, and dwelling on what might have been was a recipe for heartache
“Well, it’s time for me to be off.” Trey signed the check on the table.
“Do you have to leave so soon?” she asked.
Trey smiled. “Sorry, honey.” He took Georgia’s hand and kissed it. “But I had a delightful time.”
She smiled, but couldn’t keep the disappointment from her face. Trey was such a lady’s man.
“Have a good time at the wedding tomorrow,” she said as they walked toward the door.
They stepped outside into the warm eve ning.
“I’ll get us a cab,” Jake said. “Any ideas where to go for dinner?”
“Georgia suggested we go to a little Italian restaurant just a block down, so we can walk.”
They turned left and strolled down the street and a few minutes later entered a classy Italian restaurant.
“Please, follow me,” the mustached host said as he led them through a maze of hallways passing small groupings of tables in intimate niches along the way. “Is this to your liking?” he asked when he stopped at a booth in a niche of its own.
“Great. Thanks.”
“Could you bring us a carafe of your house wine? Our friend told us to be sure and try it,” Trey said.
“Right away.” The man hurried off, leaving them to enjoy the soft dinner music playing in the background.
“Nice atmosphere.” Jake picked up one of the menus the host had set on the table.
The waiter arrived with a carafe of red wine, two stemmed glasses, and a basket of fresh-baked bread. He set the bread on the table, then filled the glasses. Both Trey and Jake ordered the house specialty. The waiter scooped up the menus and went on his way.
“So what’s going on with you these days?” Trey asked.
“Since we’re into the summer session, I have a pretty light class load.”
Trey nodded. “Got the pool open?”
“Of course. You’re welcome to come over for a dip anytime.”
“Yeah, sure,” Trey said. “I’ll have to do that.”
But Jake knew it wouldn’t happen.
The waiter arrived with their salads.
“What about you?” Jake asked.

Hot and lovely - just how I like erotic romances
By Katzenjammer123
"Forbidden Heat" by Opal Carew is a very sexy and lovely erotic romance that left me happy and with a warm and fuzzy feeling.

Danielle Rayne's quiet and simple life is about to change.
When she meets two of her former best friends, Jack and Trey, again, she realizes how much she missed their friendship. Trey and Jack were a pair when Danielle last met them and she always admired their great relationship. But when she learns that they broke up years ago she realizes that things have changed.
In college she was in love with both men but never did something about it. But now it's her chance to spend an exciting night with both of them.
What starts as a casual and very hot reunion soon changes when Danielle, Jack and Trey continue their unusual relationship and love finds it way into their hearts.

I enjoyed "Forbidden Heat" a lot. The characters are great and the relationship that develops between them is so fascinating, hot and also sweet.
There are a lot of very erotic and sexy scenes, so be prepared. The chemistry between Danielle, Jack and Trey is amazing and I loved every scene with the three of them.
Danielle is the focus of the relationship. She is a very sweet and caring person, who doesn't believe in love for herself. She wants to get Jake and Trey back together but can't stop from falling in love with both of them.
Jake and Trey are two hot and great guys, both need to accept that their realtionship has changed and that Danielle is the best thing that ever happened to them.

If you are a fan of erotic romances with strong characters you will love this book. I'm already excited for the next book by Opal Carew, which is coming in June 2010 and is called "Bliss".

No real heat
By Tmarie2010
I ordered this book based on the recommendations. I've never read this author before but thought the plot seemed interesting so I gave it a shot. I'm sorry to say I was disappointed and didn't find the characters engaging or very interesting. I found the sex scenes and the dialogue repetative. How many times can you use the phrase "hard c*ck" without it getting way old. If you are looking for steamy, try the Dark Elves books. They are much more entertaining and original.

awesome hot and erotic

not bdsm, but follows some of the people in Opals book SIX and SWING, but each is a stand alone book , but I would recommend them all. Six was my favorite although could not put any of them down . Read each one is one sitting. Great author, great books.... Not sure if Blush goes with them but will be buying that one too. I recommend this book and the others I mentioned very highly.. steamy sexy and great love stories. Not vanilla, but not all fifty shades either, Opal rates up there with maya banks breathless and Sylvia days, crossfire trilogies which are better than fifty shade... look for my other reviews for great reads.. Lets not forget Jackie Collins too,, I read this book in 4 hours, just could not put it down.

The Native American Sun Dance Religion and Ceremony: An Annotated Bibliography (Bibliographies and Indexes in American History), by Philli

The best known and most dramatic of North American Indian ceremonies, the Sun Dance ceremony and religion is an important part of both Native American and American history. Performed by the Plains Indians, including the Sioux, Dakota, Cheyenne, and others, the dance involves fixed gazing at the sun while dancing, blowing of eagle bone whistles, fasting, and sometimes, self-torture. Although outlawed by the U.S. government in 1904, it is still practiced by some Plains Indians today. This bibliography provides the first comprehensive, organized listing of sources on the Sun Dance.

An invaluable tool for researchers of the Sun Dance, the book includes English-language books, book chapters, journal articles, dissertations and theses, and government reports. Arranged by tribe, the entries include detailed annotations, enabling researchers and librarians to locate and evaluate materials of all kinds.
