Evan Mitchell has worked for more than 12 years in the hospitality industry, including positions as a sommelier and front of house manager in some of Australia's most celebrated restaurants. He is also the designer of wine education training programs currently being run in multinational hotels and resorts.

Brian Mitchell, father to Evan, is a psychologist who has taught courses in social psychology at the University of Sydney, Australia.

More understanding of my passion for wine

I have never been one to share my thoughts on a book with a vast audience, but after my read of The Psychology of Wine I felt that my impressions on this book might be of value to those looking for a very intimate and entertaining read. By way of brief background, I grew up in a lower middle income home in the rust belt. Wine was not a part of our family household to any degree. After living the blue collar dream our parents put 4 kids through top notch universities. I imparted on a long sales & marketing journey as my chosen career and quickly was introduced to the world of wine mostly from a client entertainment perspective. My cursory knowledge of wines in those early days has lead to a life long passion for all that is wine, although I am still a complete novice in my breadth of knowledge on the subject. It is from this foundation of passion with limited substance that I entered The Psychology of Wine. To my great delight this book spoke to what I have always had trouble conveying (albeit with a large amount of scholarship that I can comfortably admit would not have been part of my conveyance). The Mitchells capture in the varying chapter's bits and pieces of how wine and its romance, its part in our mutual life fellowship, its influence on our life's fond remembrances really infuses itself into our being. Having read a limited amount on wine, I always seem to end up on something touting external communication of ones knowledge of varietals and all of the other "wine speak" so prevalent in those wine enthusiasts I aspire to be. However, this read was a wonderful journey through a host of subjects that clearly gave voice to all that is wine in my life, and allowed me a better understanding and appreciation for the passion that is our shared interest in wine. Wine is a complex and fascinating personal life long love and this book was the first that I have read that spoke to that in such a unique and enjoyable way. I would highly recommend this read.

Evan Mitchell and Brian Mitchell bring a wealth of wining and dining experience to life in the pages of The Psychology of Wine. While the title may sound like just another stuffy wine tome, never fear. This book is neither boring nor banal. Indeed, it is a book best enjoyed by popping the cork of a favorite Pinot Noir or Pinot Grigio and indulging in the combined pleasures of a good read and a fine wine.

The Psychology of Wine entertains while it educates. It is filled with marvelous myths, amusing anecdotes and savvy advice. Learn the lore behind the birth of Dionysus and the hypothesis of the world's first "accidental" wine. Follow the life of the life the vine from dormancy through harvest. Get to the bottom of the age-old debate of "nature versus nurture." Find out where those dry, didactic numbers used to score wines come from and how to judge wines with a more "soulful" approach. Discover intriguing idiosyncrasies about wine such as the "pathological" nature of Pinot Grigios and which wine grows "wiser" as it ages.

As a foodie, wine lover and travel writer, I particularly enjoyed polishing my wine-speak in Part II, The Language of Wines and the delightful frivolity of Chapter 20 - Games People Play. No doubt as we swirl, sniff, sip and savor a variety of varietals at our next dinner party, we'll play a bit of "This wine is like..." and describe our wines in terms of music, movies and even moods. The Psychology of Wine is a keeper on my bookshelves.

Fun and accessible essay on the world's favourite drink

This book was initially recommended by a friend, and I must admit to being a little hesitant at first. It seemed at a glance to be the kind of thing read at the fireside by silver-haired white males who wear tasselled loafers and paisley cravats. By the end of the first chapter however, this impression had been dispelled completely. Brian and Evan Mitchell (father and son) have confected a breezy and intimate series of essays about all aspects of wine, and their conversational tone involves the reader from the very first pages. The book meanders discursively through personal recollections, Classical mythology, serious wine science and classifications and even music and popular film. Renowned critics and wine 'gurus' are gently skewered, and the concluding theme appears to be (reassuringly to this amateur) that the greatest wines are the ones we enjoy drinking the most.
By the end I found myself edified even despite myself, and like the greatest reference books (Kenneth Clark's 'Civilisation' comes to mind) the content slips into the brain unnoticed among the mellifluous prose and sparkling procession of ideas. Earthy, self-deprecating, accessible and never patronising, The Psychology of Wine offers endless insights into this ancient companion to human life, joyfully lurching from Pamela Anderson to Plato without ever losing its balance. Highly recommended

The first chapter provides a background for the book by discussing the nature of same-sex behavior in the ancient and medieval worlds. The chapters that follow discuss such topics as sodomy and transvestite theatre in the Renaisssance; female transvestism on the English stage during the 17th century; bisexuality in 18th-century drama; the rise of English homophobia and the proliferation of lesbian relationships in England between 1745 and 1790; the homophobic context of English theatre during the Romantic Movement (1790-1835); and the rebirth of interest in Greek thought and its associations with same-sex poetry, drama, and pornography in the Victorian era (1840-1900).

Scholars have given increasing amounts of attention to the place of homosexuality in English literature and culture. Dramatic works are a reflection of cultural issues, and thus they sometimes treat homosexual subject matter. But because plays are enacted, they also represent homosexual concerns through staging conventions, such as the use of young boys to play female roles during the Renaissance. While some scholars have examined homosexuality in particular plays, this volume is a broad survey of the representation of same-sex relationships on the English stage from the Renaissance to the close of the 19th century. It draws on scholarship from a wide range of fields, including sociology, history, psychology, literature, and drama to provide a sweeping, multidisciplinary account of homosexuality and English Drama.

Modern drama has its roots largely in the Renaissance, and Renaissance drama, in turn, drew heavily from classical culture and medieval dramatic traditions. Thus the first chapter of the book provides a background discussion of same-sex behavior in the ancient and medieval worlds. This book is a gem. It's more than a great cookbook. It's an insight into Italian life. The recipes are delicious. They have the look and feel and taste of honest-to-goodness Italian food--------the food really cooked in Italy today. The recipes, alone, are worth the purchase price. But, what takes this book to a higher level is the interspersing of stories and insights about Italians and the Italian way of life. These periodic vignettes are brief, yet priceless. They give context to the recipe, and a view of Italy and Italians rarely found in other Italian cookbooks. As a result, when you make a dish, you are transported to the Italian countryside. Suddenly, you are not just making and eating dinner. You find yourself slowing down, enjoying the food in a way you didn't expect----and experiencing the beauty of life------with some friends-----or, with family-----or, best of all, alone for the evening with the special one you love.

I bought this book for some light reading while on vacation. Very quickly, it has gone far beyond that. It has become my "go to" cookbook for all things Italian. You'll love it!

Culinary Journey and Cookbook

Cookbook and memoir combined, Suzanne eloquently intertwines her dream of living in Italy to write a cookbook, with the family of friends who made her dream come true. Grandmothers, acquaintances, farmers, artisans and producers bring her story to life as she shares their passion and history of preparing food the Umbrian way. And, the dog really did eat the truffles and nobody minded!
I savored reading the book from cover to cover, and felt as if I was at the tables of her family of friends, experiencing the meals and life of Umbria. In my own kitchen I've duplicated many of the recipes Suzanne so carefully created for American cooks. Highly recommend this book to experience the food and life of this beautiful region of Italy.

TETSUYA MIYAMOTO, the creator of KenKen, is a math teacher who runs a unique mathematics class for grade school children in Japan where he practices "The Art of Teaching Without Teaching." Addictive puzzles!

Purchased this for my wife who loves word puzzles and Sudoku. Recommend starting with the easier ones first till you get the hang of it and then move to the harder ones. If you like Sudoku, good chance you will like these also. Okay honey, I wrote your review, now can I have supper?

Math Puzzles for Kids!

This is a terrific book of math puzzles for kids. They start of easy (using only the numbers 1, 2, & 3) and get harder (using the numbers 1-6). I bought this for my 9-year-old to keep his brain active over the summer. It arrived today, and he LOVES it! I'm going to have to buy him volumes 1 and 3, too. These puzzles are great for problem solving and critical thinking. The puzzles are similar to sudoku (sp?), but not quite the same. It says this book is for kids ages 9-12, but I think my son could have done these when he was 7 or 8. He has an EXTREMELY mathematical mind. If your child is older (11-12) and also has a mathematical mind, you might try some of the kenken books for adults. I highly recommend this book!

It may be good for beginners, but all of its puzzles use only multiplication. I was annoyed that the "sample" never got to an example of the book's direction. I intended it for a young teen but had to give it to a younger sibling.

Pfaff looks in depth at a representative group of significant filmmakers, e.g. Moustapha Alassane, Safi Faye, and Ousmane Sembene. Each chapter provides a biography of the cineast, major themes of his/her films, a critical survey, filmography, and a bibliography that includes interviews of and film reviews/studies of each filmmaker. Pfaff, author of The Cinema of Ousmane Sembene, clearly demonstrates her expertise in Black African cinema. The entries are well researched. They are also extremely interesting because they include information taken from personal interviews with the filmmakers, and offer a variety of viewpoints. About the Author

DONALD E. LIVELY is Vice President for Program Development for InfiLaw, the parent company of Florida Coastal School of Law, Phoenix International School of Law, and Charlotte School of Law. He has two decades of experience as a legal educator and is the founding dean of Florida Coastal School of Law and Phoenix International School of Law. Dean Lively has written numerous books and articles, has won book awards, and has spoken and lectured to national and international audiences, on constitutional law and law and policy.

RUSSELL L. WEAVER has published numerous books and articles about the United States Constitution including the First Amendment and various aspects of criminal procedure. In addition, he has spoken at conferences around the world, and regularly teaches in various foreign countries including France, Germany, Canada and Australia. He has also served as a consultant to the constitutional commissions in both Belarus and Kyrghyzstan, and he was asked to submit written comments on the Russian Constitution.

Gallo's streetwise memoir--her first book--of policing Chicago's roughest neighborhoods blends equal parts humor and regret. A Chicago cop's daughter, Gallo completed a master's and began a career in psychology, but Reagan-era cutbacks directed her onto her father's path. Intending to work as a police therapist, she was instead unceremoniously assigned to the patrol division and became both a decorated officer and something of a trailblazer as one of the first women to receive high-risk tactical assignments. Gallo astutely considers the female cop's unique circumstances: male partners deride her femininity yet capitalize on it during domestic calls; romances with civilians seem doomed. The elusive "feminine" qualities, feared by old-boy police officials, benefited her performance, while the misery of the streets apparently took a greater psychic toll than on her male counterparts. Gallo's fresh perspective counters typical TV images of cops, as she describes the experiences of "[t]hose who muddle along... trying to do the right thing." She gives devastatingly effective accounts of relations between "brother" officers and of trying to avoid being perceived as a "bimbo with a badge" or a "dog cop" (lazy or irredeemably greedy). Weaker moments occur in the melodramatic re-created crime-scene dialogues. Gallo is at her best when straightforwardly detailing the earthy minutiae of "cop life" or casting about for the emotional costs of being both witness and enforcer amidst the violence of the inner city. Powerful

Armed & Dangerous is an excellent book whether you are considering a career in law enforcement or not. Gallo begins her story with her father, who was shot on Easter, describing the pain of being a child of a police officer. She vowed never to become an officer, but life's circumstances forced her to change her mind.
From there, she takes the reader on a roller-coaster ride from her days at the Academy to the day she resigned from the Chicago Police Department. Her depiction of the Academy made me wonder if this was fiction because I couldn't believe the brutal fashion in which the trainers handled future officers. A few of them left the Academy with permanent disabilities and no chance at a law enforcement career. She tells us how the rest of them made it through that grueling period, by banding together and forming a team. Being a team player is the most important skill in police work.
I felt like I was right there with her as she described her first day on the job with a slacker for a field trainer and how that trainer deserted her when she needed him to back her up. She tells us what it was like to kill a man and what that did to her soul. She tells us what it's like to see a mutilated baby and then have to be professional in dealing with his murdering mother. And, she tells us what it's like to have to go to the same neighborhoods to deal with the same people day after day. There are lots of heartbreaking stories in this book and some incredibly funny ones, too.
I found myself laughing out loud at the craziness and the stupidity of both the criminals and the corrupt officers. More often than not, however, I felt disgusted by the drug addicts and the political games of the department brass. Throughout this book, I wondered how she managed to keep her humor when faced with the pain, the terror, and the good ol' boy mentality that tried its best to keep her in the trenches. The end saddened me, but it was typical.
Armed & Dangerous stripped me of all my notions about police officers and what they do for a living. Gallo is a powerful writer, and I applaud her for having the courage to write this book. Throw away those police procedural novels. They pale against Gallo's book.

Excellent, Moving, Accurate and Interesting

'Armed & Dangerous' and 'Crime Scenes' are two of the best books written by police/and or about police officer's work since David Simon's 'Homicide' back in 1991. You really get a feel for the victims, for the whole picture painted of a crime scene as it goes down, and it breaks your heart or makes you furious in equal measure... You hate the indifference and evil of the bad guys, and bleed for the pathos of the innocents whose lives are ruined. Excellent book. An objective look at the life of a police officer in any city -- an an accurate expose of the bureaucracy, the sometimes incompetence and pettiness of the top brass, the secrets, the lies, the cameraderie and the CYA. Run out any buy these -- and whatever else she writes in the future ! You'll never be bored by Gina Gallo's evocative tales. A five star without question !

Learn the truth about the C.P.D.

This book is the most realistic account of policing in Chicago that I've ever read. I'm a Chicago Police Officer and can attest to the authenticity of the descriptions contained in this book. Gallo doesn't sugar-coat anything--she describes the Academy like it was, uses language true to policing, and hits it on the head with her definition of "game face". Mostly though, she nails the descriptions of the bosses--from the superintendent through the street sergeant--right on the head. It's exactly what the "real police" think, but can't say, because they would be buried in the Duece on midnights if they did. Thanks, Gina. I hope all the bosses read it and cringe when they recognize themselves! I know I can put names to many current and former P.O.'s from your vivid descriptions. Nice to see the deserving squirm a bit. Assuming they have the conscience to do even that much!
