Great Testomony of the Power of Faith
By Glutton for books
"Miracles Do Happen" is an excellent testimony to the power of faith. Briege Mckenna developed sever arthritis as a young adult, which confined her to a wheel chair. When attending a Catholic Charismatic prayer services, she was miraculously healed. Allegedly, she received a private revelation, in which God asked her to be a healer to others. She debated whether the message was really from God, as she was a member of a contemplative community, but after a period of discernment and a series of signs, she lost all doubt.

"Miracles do Happen" is an autobiography of Sr. Briege's healing ministry. She prays for people and many have been healed of spiritual and physical pains and diseases. The book is full of stories and photos of people, whom she has encountered during her journey and many of whom were healed by prayers. It is easy to be skeptical of spiritual healers today, but unlike many charlatans in the field, Sr. Briege does not accept money or promote products or methodology for financial gains. The book is great for renewing faith in prayer, and offers much guidance and learning to discern God's voice in your life through prayer. Sr.Briege herself spends an estimated two-three hours in prayer each day, and write about the types of Christian spiritual practices which have been spiritually edifying for her.

This is a simple book about the role that prayer and faith has played in her life, and in the lives of others whom she has had the fortune to know, during her religious life and is not bogged down in theological explanations or issues related to debatable doctrines. It is written simply as an intimate conversation, as often is the case of works from saints, and when one reads it one has to wonder if they are living in a very special life time of a woman who might be recognized as a saint in the future.

JESUS comes alive through Sister Briege McKenna!

This inspiring read reminds us of the the power of faith and belief in Jesus, prayer and the efficacy of Catholic sacraments, especially that of the Holy Eucharist.

While non-Catholic spiritual healers like to steal the media limelight to rake in big money for themselves, this humble Catholic nun recognizes that all healing coming through her is from God/Jesus and she gives Jesus where credit is due. She acknowledges that she is nothing without God. She is but a signpost to Jesus. It is Jesus who heals through her. See that incarnational aspect of Catholicism here? Just like the sacraments, they're transmitters of God's healing graces and power.

This book tells of Sister Briege's humble beginnings. Entering the convent at the age of 15, she consecrated her life to Jesus as a religious nun. After her miraculous healing of arthiritis, she grew even more closer to Jesus and found herself having the gift of healing. At first, she didn't want to acknowledge her gift and wanted very much not to be in the spotlight of anything. Calling her out of her reclusive lifestyle, Jesus sent many unrelated people to her, even non-Catholic sensitives who told her of her gift. Still Sister Briege had her initial doubts and was mislead to seek counsel by a "group of ladies" (there you go again, the first Eve in the Garden always seeking entertainment from the forbidden) who were seeking prophesy from a false prophet who turned out to be an agent of the evil one. The false prophet tried his bag of terrorist tricks but the power of Jesus was stronger. That was her lesson to learn and she started listening to good holy counsel after that incident.

After being met with many "coincidences" and unrelated people who told her of her healing gift and that she has to minister to others who need healing, Sister Briege embarked on a more rigorous prayer life, spending 2-3 hours every day before the Blessed Sacrament to adore Jesus and seek spiritual direction. Her healing ministry was blast off by people who needed healing and got healed.

Through Sister Briege, Jesus healed:

(1) Paralysis
(2) Blindness
(3) Cancer
(4) Tumors

etc.

In this book, what you will read include:

(1) Sister Briege's bio: journey, thoughts, reflections, divine inspiration.
(2) Miraculous healings.
(3) Testimonies of initial skeptics.
(4) Efficacy of Catholic sacraments, in particular Holy Orders and the Eucharist.
(5) Stories of faith and hope.

Through the many healings and various patients that came to her, Sister Briege cautions that inner spiritual healing and a prayerful life consecrated to God are more important than any physical outward healing sign that people often ask of her. Not all who come to her will be healed since God doesn't will it. Inner conversions are necessary. Some outward physical ailments are caused by sickness of the soul.

All in all, this marvelous testimony is a good reminder of the power of JESUS working through time, through the sacraments and through a prayerful person like Sister Briege.

God bless Sister Briege!

WINNER OF THE 2008 MAN ASIAN LITERARY PRIZE
A NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW NOTABLE BOOK OF THE YEAR

It begins with a body. On a clear day in winter, the battered corpse of Crispin Salvador is pulled from the Hudson River. Gone, too, is the only manuscript of his final book, a work meant to rescue him from obscurity by exposing the crimes of the Filipino ruling families. Miguel, his student and only remaining friend, sets out for Manila to investigate.

The result is a rich and dramatic family saga of four generations, tracing one hundred and fifty years of Philippine history forged under the Spanish, the Americans, and the Filipinos themselves. Exuberant and wise, wildly funny and deeply moving, Ilustrado is a daring and inventive debut novel that "begins as a murder mystery and develops into an ambitious exploration of cultural identity, ambition, and artistic purpose." (The New Yorker).

From Publishers Weekly
Syjuco's novel investigating the mysterious death of a beloved writer is crammed full of quotations, letters, found documents, and all sorts of devices and flotsam that translates better on the page, where it can be read or skimmed, than in audio, where everything must be given equal attention. William Dufris does his best with this material, but he cannot prevent the addenda from bogging down the flow of the narrative. Dufris gamely tries to navigate his way through the thickets of Syjuco's prose, but the constant interruptions and stylistic embroidery does not lend itself to fruitful listening. Review

“Winner of the 2008 Man Asian Literary Prize while still in manuscript form, Ilustrado is a hip and secure first novel about the urgency of art and regret. Confident and quirky, with passages that recall early Phillip Roth and a structure not unlike the best M. Night Shyamalan films, the book actively seeks to provoke its audience with bathroom humor and sexist stabs at superficial melodrama. Such scenes are bookended by passages of profundity that somehow manage to always say something about life as well as literature.” ―Roberto Ontiveros, The Dallas Morning News

“Ambitious . . . In a daring literary performance, Syjuco weaves the invented with the factual . . . Ilustrado is being presented as a tracing of 150 years of Philippine history, but it's considerably more than that . . . Spiced with surprises and leavened with uproariously funny moments, it is punctuated with serious philosophical musings.” ―Raymond Bonner, The New York Times Book Review

“A dazzling and virtuosic adventure in reading . . . The narrative is organised with immense confidence and skill . . . The author's post-modernist bag of tricks also contains a whip-crack narrative skill that's as reminiscent of Dickens as it is of Roberto Bolaño . . . There's a capaciousness that makes the book richly attractive to wander into . . . [This] novel . . . fizzes with the effervescence a large book can have when its author is in total control of the material. This isn't a story; it's the unfolding of an entire world, a mirror-land that seems familiar but is always ineffably strange . . . Syjuco is a writer already touched by greatness . . . This is a remarkably impressive and utterly persuasive novel. Its author . . . may one day succeed with the Nobel committee.” ―Joseph O'Connor, The Guardian

“An exuberant, complex, and fascinating ride through 150 years of Philippine history . . . Syjuco's writing is playful, smart, and confident . . . An inventive and exciting debut.” ―Grace Talusan, Rumpus

“An extraordinary debut, at once flashy and substantial, brightly charming and quietly resistant to its own wattage . . . Syjuco's gifts for pastiche, his protean narrative energy, are in particular evidence in these pitch-perfect fictions of the fictions of his fictional author . . . An exuberant, funny novel that neither takes its grand ambitions too seriously, nor pretends to be measuring itself by any less a scale of intent. How Syjuco . . . has done this is foremost a testament to his prodigious gifts . . . With his dazzling first foray, Syjuco suggest how his new Asia, his new identity, must ‘look' on the page and between the covers. That look is unexpected and fresh, quite unlike anything that has been seen before.” ―Charles Foran, The Globe and Mail

“Wildly entertaining . . . Engaging . . . Absolutely assured in its tone, literary sophistication and satirical humor . . . Syjuco is only on his mid-30s, and he already possesses the wand of the enchanter.” ―Michael Dirda, The Washington Post

“Ilustrado will provoke audible oohs and ahhs from readers . . . The writing is gorgeous. Plus, there's an O. Henry twist in the epilogue. This is a great book. Read it.” ―Luis Clemens, Senior Editor, Tell Me More

“Syjuco's exceptional novel exceeds its heightened expectations, serving notice that a brilliant new talent has arrived, somehow fully formed.” ―Jared Bland, The Walrus

“Dazzling . . . It is a virtuoso display of imagination and wisdom, particularly remarkable from a 31-year-old author; a literary landmark for the Philippines and beyond.” ―Michele Leber, Booklist (starred review)

“This imaginative first novel shows considerable ingenuity in binding its divergent threads into a satisfying, meaningful story.” ―Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“Through his vivid use of language, Syjuco has crafted a beautiful work of historical fiction that's part mystery and part sociopolitical commentary. Readers who enjoyed Junot Díaz's The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao will enjoy this literary gem.” ―Library Journal (starred review)

“An ambitious debut novel, winner of the Man Asian Literary Prize, introduces an author of limitless promise . . . It dazzles as brightly as Jonathan Safran Foer's Everything Is Illuminated . . . First novels rarely show such reach and depth.” ―Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“Miguel Syjuco's dizzyingly energetic and inventive novel views his native Philippines with a merciless yet loving eye, its many voices a chorus illuminating the various facets of this chaotic, complicated country. An ambitious and admirable debut.” ―Janice Y. K. Lee, author of The Piano Teacher

“Vulnerable and mischievous, sophisticated and naïve, Ilustrado explores the paradoxes that come with the search for identity and throws readers into the fragile space between self-pursuit and self-destruction. A novel about country and self, youth and experience, it is elegiac, thoughtful, and original.” ―Colin McAdam, author of Fall and Some Great Thing

“From the ruckus of rumors, blogs, ambitions, overweening grandparents, indifferent history, and personal crimes, Miguel Syjuco has innovatively reimagined that most wonderfully old-fashioned consolation: literature. Ilustrado is a great novel.” ―Rivka Galchen, author of Atmospheric Disturbances

“Brilliantly conceived, and stylishly executed, [Ilustrado] covers a large and tumultuous historical period with seemingly effortless skill. It is also ceaselessly entertaining, frequently raunchy, and effervescent with humour.” ―2008 Man Asian Literary Prize Panel of Judges

“A daring literary performance.” ―Raymond Bonner, The New York Times Book Review

“Short, sharp and funny. . .” ―Joyce Hor-Chung Lau, The New York Times

“The book Ilustrado most recalls is Junot Diaz's The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. Though stylistically the two writers couldn't be further apart, the way Syjuco places his characters in the political pressure cooker of the Philippines's political history achieves the same disorienting mix of breadth and claustrophobia. The book picked up the Man Asian Literary Prize in 2008 and will likely be nominated on our shores, as well.” ―Jonathan Messinger, Time Out Chicago

“The thing about wildly inventive novels that play with form and voice and style is that they're often easier to praise than to read. Even the ones that feel like a rewarding accomplishment to finish can be tough sledding to get through. That's one reason why Miguel Syjuco's debut novel, "Ilustrado," is so rare, rich and rewarding . . . Syjuco has talent and style to burn--he's a dynamic and funny writer who uses every tool at his disposal to create a narrative. The result is literary fiction that will keep you up all night thrilled, laughing, enthralled and amazed. Don't miss it.” ―David Daley, The Courier-Journal

“This is a big, bold, cunning, impassioned, plangent and very funny book. . . Although there are riotously satirical parts to this book, there is an emotional core as well: the comedy would lose its tang without the characters' blasted hopes and self-aware inadequacies. Like Steve Toltz's A Fraction of the Whole, another epic comedy from the southern hemisphere, it deftly negotiates between the absurd and the all-too-real, the cosmopolitan and the local, the nature of failure and celebrity.” ―Stuart Kelly, Scotland on Sunday

“Beyond Ilustrado's furious skewering of Filipino elites is writing that bristles with surprising imagery. Life with a girlfriend, Miguel says, ‘was like walking naked around a cactus with your eyes closed.' Miguel notices how an old woman's skin ‘sags on her as if she were a child wearing her father's sweater.' An unruly and energizing novel, filled with symmetries and echoes that only become apparent in its closing pages, Ilustrado pushes readers into considering matters of authenticity, identity and belonging. Despite its various comic turns, it is ultimately a tragedy--a raw reminder of the fact that we can never, really, find our way back home.” ―Financial Times

“Ilustrado is built like a carousel, revolving between first- and third-person commentary, news reports, interviews, extracts from Salvador's work and a Crispin Salvador biography the narrator is writing. Nonetheless it is all held tightly together, focused on the returning son's difficulties with his family and his efforts to acclimatize. Manila is conjured as a dystopian black hole. Civil unrest crackles at the edge of the narrator's vision as he explores the metropolis, reaching critical mass when a typhoon hits the city near the novel's climax.” ―Times Literary Supplement

My Elbow's Lebensraum.
By Nicole Del Sesto
I guess this is sort of an epistolary novel, and as I'm already struggling with what to say, I'm also going to go with "hard to describe".

The story begins with the death of a Filipino author (Crispin), and our narrator and pupil of the dead author (Miguel) decides to write his biography. The story is definitely more about Miguel and his journey, and about the Philippines, than about Crispin.

The tale is told in a number of different ways. There's the biography of Crispen, snippets from Crispin's writings and interviews, the narrator's story, narrative about the narrator, but not told by the narrator, and some random blogs and other errata.

For me, the book gets extra points for the way in which it told the story. In many ways, it reminded me of The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, where a modern day tale is told, but facts of the history and politics of a country are woven in. In Oscar Wao, the historical bits were told in dull, excruciating detail, in microscopic print, via footnotes. This book definitely approached the history and politics in a more interesting fashion. Even still, at times it got a bit wearying.

For the most part, the writing is stellar. Though I certainly felt that the author suffered a bit from 'new-author-itis' where they want to convey every idea they've ever had in their first novel. We start the book with Crispin's bibliography and that goes on for several uninteresting pages, and there's another point in the book where Miguel is flipping through the television channels and describing what's on every channel. 3 1/2 pages worth. Granted, some of it was more of that clever "slipping the history/politics in", but mostly the bit was overdone.

At times I found the writing pretentious and overwrought. Though "my elbow's lebensraum" is clever, (once one has looked the word up in the dictionary), things like "....he was more avuncular than pederastic" felt like he was trying too hard. But then he'd come up with something like this ... "Her hair, dyed such a bad brown it was orange, was pulled severely into a bun on her head like a tangerine," and all the author's other irksome things were forgiven.

I can understand how the literary community loves this book. It's a book about books and writers. It is done in a way that I personally don't think I've seen done before, so I think I loved it too. The epilogue almost made it a 5 for me, but there were too many other little things that kept it from a 5 star read. I won't even allude to how the book ends, only just to say that in keeping with the theme of the book it was creative and perfectly suited to everything that had gone before.

Less could have been more with this book, but it is absolutely a worthy read and I would definitely read another book by this author.

And now I'm off to pursue my goal for the day: To use the word lebensraum in a sentence. Now if I could just figure out how to pronounce it.

Humdrum and not up to the marketing
By Peter G. Keen
This novel just doesn't work for me. It is one of those intentionally kaleidoscopic, hypermodern riffs that provides multiple snapshots on an enigmatic figure, in this case a Filipino author/political activist and all-around out of his skull nomad, whose death is equally enigmatic. It is very hard to make such a style build a coherent narrative. It's not enough to be hip in the writing. Here, kaleidoscopic becomes just episodic. The multiple snippets of scenes, voices and settings do not build to anything. At the end of the book, I felt no more connection to the mysterious Salvador Crispin nor to his narrator-disciple who is searching to reconstruct his life than at the start. The scattershot mixing of styles - blog snippets, in-the-narrator's head commentary, reminiscence, history summaries, press clips--are initially intriguing but in the end tiresome.

An attraction for me in trying out this unfamiliar author was that the book was the winner of the Man Asia prize. I assumed that this had a stature comparable with the Booker Prize and that it signaled the recognition of literary achievement. Without in any way wanting to be dismissive of this worthy initiative, it needs to be placed in context. It is a small competition aimed at bringing attention to new Asian writers, ones with promise that may become sustained achievement. It is sponsored by the Man Group plc, a Hong Kong investment management company. It has a limited number of submissions and is very much for the unpublished to get attention in "literary circles" (its specific target). So this is a book by a new young author. That's it. It is very much a nifty first novel and that is reason enough to try it out. There are some good points to raise. The author is smooth with words but words are not enough to compensate for lack of cohesion, thematic structure and characterization. It's OK-ish but not at all a major work.

Literary exhibitionism
By Keris Nine
From an outline description, there's a story here - the murder or suicide of a once famous Philippine writer, Crispin Salvador, found dead, floating in the Hudson River, murdered or perhaps a suicide. His final novel, one that he has been working on for twenty years, an exposé that is going to blow apart the whole corrupt system in his home country in literary and critical circles as much as political ones, has disappeared. His closest friend, the author Miguel Syjuco, is given access to his notes and documents of this fictional writer, attempts to build up a picture of the brilliant and controversial writer but in the process of interviewing friends and colleagues for a biography of Salvador, Miguel discovers that he never really knew him.

That's the premise in outline anyway. What else there is of this book is somewhat random and smothered in words and irrelevancies. Short biographical incidents are related of the fictional author's life, illustrated but not illuminated, by seemingly random paragraphs from his fictional works, imaginary interviews, stories related to his brilliance, his notoriety and his exile. Between this and the author's singularly uninteresting reminiscences on his own bourgeois US émigré background, his journey back to the Philippines, dropping in the odd blog posting and running joke along the way, there is of course an attempt to consider in a very post-modern way modern notions of the role of the author, of fiction, of nationality, one's background and the influences of place of birth and family that make a writer singular and potentially a revolutionary.

All of this is all so very literate and clever, and all of it so much deeply tedious rambling. That's not to say that there aren't moments of brilliance and clever observations on the nature of writing and revolution - albeit from a pampered middle-class émigré literary background rather than from a genuine Filipino perspective - but most of them are lost in a morass of references and narrative trickery designed to impress the literati ('Winner of the Man Asian Literary Prize'!). For anyone looking for the next Roberto Bolaño, this could be for you. For anyone who thinks one is quite enough then you would do well give Ilustrado a miss.

Great collection!
By Cal's Mom
My two year old loves these books and the music that comes with them. She's enjoyed the books for well over a year now and still picks them frequently. Now that she's familiar with the accompanying music on the CD, she usually wants us to "sing" as we read. It really is a nice collection with fun, simple, bright and bold illustrations. It's one of our go-to items for gifts for friends too!

20 month old Xmas present
By G's mom
We bought this for our daughter when she was
20 months old. She still loves listening to it three months later. Would listen and "read" the books everyday if I put it on. Not sure I love the singing - why the English accents I wonder? - but who cares if I like it. Great value as well. 51 songs and 3 books for less than $15.

Old and new favorites!
By Aunt Cindy
My grandson loves the First Songs Library. It's so much fun to see him at 22 months doing the motions to songs like 'If you're happy and you know it'! He follows along in the books and also likes to look at the books even when the music isn't playing.

What happens when you step outside of your life for the briefest of moments? Perry Patetick learns that when his fantasies become reality, his life as he'd known it for ever would change in an instant.

When Perry Patetick capriciously stumbles into Cruel and Unusual, an S&M boutique, after being fired from the newspaper he worked for, he thought he found what had been missing from his life.

His fiancee, Ms. Right, the safeguard of his life, is excluded from Perry's new sordid dark life and the downward spiral into the black abyss of the Ubu Roi, an afterhours club where sex, bondage, and beatings are apropos.

But what happens to reality when it's replaced by fantasy and all that you see is only an illusion? Truth will prevail. After Perry is sucked into the debauched lifestyle of D/s, reality returns when Perry is named as the prime suspect in a brutal murder done S&M style.

And reality is, only Perry can save himself.

From Kirkus Reviews
Fade in on Perry Patetick, the anti-hero of this so-called anti-love story, as he's about to lose his newspaper job and drift into the world of S&M, in particular D/S--D for Dominance, S for submission. Perry is a submissive, which means he gets chained up and beaten a lot. And you wouldn't believe how much he enjoys it. While making the scene, he also makes such new acquaintances as Auntie Maim, Lady Pain, and Deprav-o, whose voluminous contributions to his exotic education are lavishly detailed. But life takes a fateful turn when he meets Karen Pashlust, scene name Karenina. Off-scene, she's a respectable real-estate dealer, portly rather than svelte--from certain viewpoints she can look rather like Winston Churchill--but on-scene, she's somebody whose erotic soul vibrates to Perry's. They fall in love. They make plans to run off together. The fly in their ointment, however, is Karenina's husband. Bennie, clod though he is, adores Karenina almost as much as Perry does and won't let her go. Stalemate--until suddenly Karenina is found murdered, beaten to death, and guess who becomes the cops' number-one suspect. But Perry is one resourceful submissive, and nobody, but nobody, is going to set him up and get away with it. Kadet's debut has some of the mystery novel's trappings (steady there, Agatha Christie), but it's more identifiably a journey--toward pornography. Markers along the way are decadence, depravity, and sleaze. -- Copyright © 2000 Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

From the Back Cover
"In D/s, Gary Kadet takes the reader on a dazzling, dizzying ride into the phantasmagoric underworld of heavy-duty sexual fetishism, a spookily seductive realm that has rarely been treated with such boldness and bravura. In exploring that subterranean place where sex and violence, love and death, ritual and profanity are inextricably merged, Kadet has produced a brave and provocative book whose subject is nothing less than the mystery of the self."

-Harold Schecter, bestselling author of Deranged and Deviant

"Now here's a book that just oozes with non-stop, graphic, unnatural sex. Most writing about sex is awfully solemn and pretty awful, but this book is positively gleeful. It's called D/s-that's big D-slash-small s. Get it? Dominant/submissive, S&M. Gary S. Kadet's novel has an authoritarian air-thorough research-and his take throughout is that kinky, painful, often gender-bending sex is both ridiculous and fun....This sizable novel leisurely investigates the oddities of fetishism-there's an extremely funny group excursion to the big-time depravity of New York....

-Alice Turner, Fiction Editor, Playboy

"Gary S. Kadet is a magician. In just one chapter, he transforms an engagingly cynical reporter into a submissive apprentice to a nouveau-chic dominatrix. That the transformation strikes you as not merely credible but also inevitable speaks worlds about D/s as a novel, and the inclusion of a murder-mystery element catapults this 'walk on the wild side' into La Vida Loca. A truly different-and terrific-read."

-Jeremiah Healy, acclaimed author of Spiral

"This new literary voice takes us somewhere else. Kadet's novel of S&M, D/s for the adventurer who is willing to travel into a new erotic, suspenseful fictive dream: One that has not been dreamt before. Bravo to Kadet for keeping this reader marveling at his deft prose and turning the pages of this edgy story."

-MJ Rose, author of Lip Service

"Gary Kadet's first novel is brilliantly innovative and wildly original. D/s is Looking for Mr. Goodbar for the new millenium, taking us on a hellish ride along one man's descent into sexual and moral depravity that turns into a Kafka-esque nightmare. Reading it is like peeking into a world we're not supposed to see, a world hidden behind curtains Kadet parts with a bold vision and unique sensibility. His is a new and welcome voice that makes D/s stand for Damn sensational."

-Jon Land, author of A Walk in the Darkness

"Startlingly extortionate prose. As a crime story this book is truly the Curse of Cain. I loved it." -Robin Moore, author of The French Connection and The Accidental Pope

"This wicked, funny book spins the kind of tale I love to read: an everyman dragged down into a swirling underworld of sexual obsession while trying like hell to keep a toehold in normal life. It's like a trip to an adult amusement park where you know it's bad for you but you can't make yourself leave. Gary Kadet's writing is alternately hilarious and painfully insightful."

Philip Reed, author of Bird Dog

Must Read!
By A Customer
I couldn't stop smiling. I couldn't stop reading. These characters could be the people I've met from my own foray into the "public scene". My very own house-frau, "not-bad looking" descent into the supposed real life D/s scene. Talk about touching a nerve! Mr. Kadet managed to do it all, I laughed, I smirked, I giggled and I cried when I realized there was no more to read. As I finished this fabulous mixture of secret longing, desire, fulfillment, disappointment and redemption, I remembered a few things of my own. And, yes, I remembered the pain. I highly recommend this book....an absolute must-read!

Fairly shabby performance...
By A Customer
Here's a not-very-good novelistic treatment of the s/m scene. As an s/m scene player myself, I found very little here that rings true, and as a reader of crime fiction, I found weak characters, a middling plot and a total lack of psychological depth. For me the worst aspect was the social satire; I found it less pithy than pitiful. I will give the author a point or two for daring to grapple with the so-called sexual underground, though his notion of "decadence" is fairly tame. Half a cheer and hopes for a better performance in the future.

An INCREDIBLE debut!
By A Customer
An incredible debut! I kept visualizing it as a movie in my mind as I raced through the dizzying, dazzling writing and quirky plotting. I loved this book and unhesitatingly recommend it. I kept thinking after I finished -- when's the next one.

Get Hot or Go Home: Trisha Yearwood : The Making of a Nashville Star, by Lisa Rebecca Gubernick

Launching country star Trisha Yearwood to megastardom required an astonishing collection of resources: acquiring the right handlers; developing a stronger. more sexual image and presence; deciding just how "country" to be. From Publishers Weekly
This book is the product of seven months spent in the studio and on the road with Trisha Yearwood, in addition to an impressive amount of research into country music marketing. Gubernick ( Squandered Fortune ) portrays Yearwood as a warm and remarkably talented individual who also symbolizes the movement of the Nashville Sound from cottage industry into the mainstream of American music. (There are more than 2200 country-format radio stations today, compared with 81 in 1961.) With the enormous financial potential--and concomitant risk--riding on the success of one individual, Gubernick contends, it is no surprise that costumes, song selection, choice of studio and tour musicians and other aspects of Yearwood's packaging are carefully planned and controlled. Yearwood is shown as an active participant in these decisions. This study of Yearwood as a work-in-progress will appeal to fans and to the marketing community. Photos not seen by PW.

From Library Journal
Although this book acquaints readers with country music star Yearwood, its focus is on the forces that create a star. Gubernick, an editor for Forbes magazine and author of Squandered Fortune: The Life and Times of Huntington Hartford ( LJ 1/91), details the gritty bus tours, frustrating recording sessions, competition for awards, glitzy Grand Ole Opry shows, business deals, and personal relationships that comprise Yearwood's day-to-day life. The author's thorough research and straightforward writing style produce a convincing portrait of the wear-and-tear of music stardom. This book will appeal to libraries serving fans of country music as well as those curious about the inner workings of the music business.

From Kirkus Reviews
Engrossing account of the early career of a promising country singer, from small-town beginnings to careful grooming as potential superstar. Patricia Yearwood's fine first record, Trisha Yearwood (1991), followed years of careful prepping and self-management as a music- business major, backup singer, and lead singer in a bowling-alley band. But launching Yearwood to megastardom would require a higher order of resources: acquiring the right handlers; developing a stronger, more sexual image and presence; deciding just how ``country'' she should be. With a fine eye for detail and much wit, Gubernick (Squandered Fortune, 1990) chronicles this difficult process, highlighted by Yearwood's acquisition of Ken ``We Are The World'' Kragen as manager; endless, exhausting touring with her band; and efforts to get her sold on the Today show and through a new Revlon perfume. Gubernick also offers a fascinating account of the making of Yearwood's masterful second album, which drew high critical praise but disappointing sales. Along the way, the author brings us into contact with many of country's biggest figures and provides a solid history of the country-music industry. Throughout, Yearwood remains obscure--but in some ways that's fortunate, since our desire to know her draws us on. That we still don't know the budding superstar by book's end comes as no surprise: Gubernick has made clear how a sophisticated star-making machinery can obscure both message and messenger, sometimes despite the best intentions of talented handlers. An illuminating investigation of country music--and of the ``product placement'' that shapes it. (Sixteen pages of b&w photographs) -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Great Insight
By Robert Workman
It's been a few years since I read this book, but I was impressed with how thorough and inside the book got. It never descended into gossip or tabloid journalism. It's as close to actually being in the country music industry as one can get. You don't have to be a fan of Trisha Yearwood to appreciate it (though if you're not, you'll defnitely be curious about her after you're done). It's a fascinating and insightful look into the business of making music.

Amazon.com Review
The Long Lost begins with a sequence so haunting and bizarre that it almost seems a chapter out of legend. A witty, sexy married couple who live in urban England drive to the coast of Wales on a weekend holiday. On a lark, they clamber down a steep cliff to a seaside town that turns out to be utterly deserted. There's an island just off shore and the tide is out, so they walk out across the exposed sand. The empty streets and eerie absence of human voices, followed by the overgrown beauty of the island, seem to transport them into another world, another time. They stumble on an ancient stone cottage, where an old woman with long white hair lies motionless on a pallet. At first they take her for dead, but she slowly awakens. She turns out to be a long-lost relative. She offers no explanation for why she lives alone in a nearly empty, crumbling cottage on an uninhabited island next to a deserted village. The tide comes in. The three of them end up spending the night in the dark cottage. The couple take the old woman back to England with them.

Then their lives, and the lives of everyone who knows them, begin slowly and inexorably to fall apart.

As Joel Lane writes in the horror review magazine Necrofile, "The Long Lost ... is written in a clear, vivid style which encompasses precise visual descriptions, ambiguous metaphors, and sudden changes of mood. The prose is so attractive that the fundamental strangeness of what is going on takes a long time to sink in; and the ending doesn't so much explain the story as send you away to think about it. The reader is, at various times, entranced, mystified, disturbed, appalled, provoked, and amused. Only twice before--in The Influence and Midnight Sun--has Campbell written at such a pitch of creative intensity."

The Long Lost is a dark novel about sin, guilt, scapegoats, and the fragility of the self. It is leavened by black humor, and the distinct, if elusive, possibility of redemption. --Fiona Webster

From Publishers Weekly
Campbell may be the most protean of horror writers, adept at quiet terror in the classic tradition (Midnight Sun), eccentric horror that plays for laughs (The Count of Eleven) or, as in this tightly wrought work, fiction that uses the genre as a staging ground for deft psychological and sociological commentary. The occult element here is almost incidental to the mayhem unleased in the English town of Chester after home renovators David and Joelle Owain discover a withered old woman barely alive outside a remote Welsh village and take her home with them. Soon, the lives of the Owains and their friends and neighbors take a precipitous turn toward madness: train engineer Herb Cantry, enraged at his wife's leaving him for another man, crashes his train and kills both himself and his rival; computer consultant Richard Vale, his business in tatters, poisons his entire family; David Owain falls out with a close friend and falls in lust with a sexy teenager. Meanwhile, the old woman grows ever more vigorous. At novel's end, in a revelation that feels arbitrary and even unnecessary, Campbell lets on why, but the reason hardly matters because his main aim here seems not to be the delineation of supernatural agents and horror but the tracing of what happens when conscience gives way to license. At this he succeeds admirably, though with its minimum of occult bells and whistles this novel is more suited for a mainstream audience than the vociferous horror readership the author has courted for so long.

From Library Journal
On vacation in Wales, David and Joelle Owain discover Gwen, an old woman asleep in a small cottage on a deserted island created by the tides. Amazingly, she claims to be a distant relative and returns with the Owains to Chester. After a backyard barbecue, where Gwen meets the family's friends and neighbors, misfortunes begin to dog the guests, causing David to wonder just who and what Gwen really is. Events build to a suspenseful, surprising, and satisfying climax in the hands of the prolific Campbell (The Count of Eleven, LJ 6/1/92), a master of the sinister. He sustains an atmosphere of dread by detailing the daily horrors that can collectively destroy one's life. Disturbing and original, this neat mix of contemporary fiction with supernatural undertones is recommended for most collections.

interesting concept, unreadable execution.
By Dianne M. Stewart
I agree fully with the persons who couldn't get into this book. It was poorly and bizarrely executed. The unending pointless exchanges between characters were barely understandable. I found myself rereading dialogue many times just trying to follow it - and it was often meaningless to the overall story. Finally I gave up and skipped to the fairly banal ending. This was a sadly mishandled story, unworthy of the time taken to read it.

The most well-deserved 5 stars I've ever given.
By K. Carpenter
I must agree with the "reader from California" on this one -- the "reader from Idaho" didn't know a good thing when he/she read it. I've never read a Ramsey Campbell novel before this, but now I can't wait to delve into the rest of his body of work. I just finished THE LONG LOST this morning on the subway, and I can say I was riveted by this book, cover to cover.
I like that idea about "quiet horror." That's precisely what I felt from this story. No flash and dazzle. No otherworldly monsters. Basically, no bull. Just skillfully delivered almost real-life horror.
Throughout the central story line of a couple and a mysterious old woman who has entered their lives, Campbell has woven together several gripping vignettes, including the Owains and their circle of friends, which are utterly horrific because we've all read of similar events happening in real life.
Each character has a distinct, believable personality. The author appears to have an incredible knack for picking up on the nuances of human psyches. The players in this story (primary, secondary and incidental alike) are fleshed out in such a masterful way that I could virtually see each of them before me as I read. That's not to say that he rattles off litanies of physical descriptions. Not Campbell. He gives you the physical stuff slowly and only situationally, when it seems appropriate for one character to notice something about another. It's really quite beautiful how he uses this skill to paint his picture with delicately honed layers.
But, as I was saying, I could almost see each character as I read about them. I suppose it's probably more accurate to say I could really feel them. Know them. Their quirks, their kinks, their movements and expressions. Just as we've all read about the terrible, sad things that humans do to one another every day in the world around us, we've also all known these men and women who are just your ordinary citizen until something horrible happens inside them and they snap.
I raced through THE LONG LOST because this story of sin and guilt born from internalized fears filled me with increasing doses of dread almost from the very first page. As they say, the suspense was killing me. There was no way I could walk away from a chapter halfway through. And even then, Campbell was able to keep me hanging for another chapter or two because he was juggling three or four storylines at one time! I couldn't find out what happened until I was terrified even further by the gut-wrenching things that were happening to other characters. I don't recall the last time I read a story that was so relentless in giving me the chills.
While I'm on that point, I fume when I hear readers criticize authors for giving them too many characters to follow. That's not the author's failing, it's the reader's. It takes a lot of nerve to blame a brilliant writer for your laughably short attention span.
I don't want to tell a lot about the story itself because it would be far too easy to give too much away. The only way to enjoy this story is too let it unfold and hang on. Besides, too many folks around here think a review is a book report, just ask Harriet Klausner. I'd much rather read someone's opinion and recommendation, so here's mine.
READ THIS BOOK!!! Read it if you love Clive Barker. Ramsey Campbell is the only other writer besides Barker who knows how to write about real evil. Read it if you enjoy Stephen King. Personally, I can't stand most of King's books because he fumbles his endings time and time again, but Campbell can show you how it should be done. He carries the ball right to the end zone and spikes it!

A supremely well-written example of the "Quiet Horror" Genre
By A Customer
I was moved to write this review because of the negative review below. Ramsey Campbell is one of the most skilled Contemporary writers of Horror and Dark Fantasy but he often gets bad reactions from young readers not familiar with his subtle touch. Campbell is, to my mind, the current Heir Apparent to Arthur Machen who wrote Weird fiction shortly before WWI. Some people feel that Machen was England's Lovecraft. This novel is another example of Ramsey Campbell using the appearence of a stranger or the incidence of a strange event to cause cataclysmic upheaval in the lives of his characters which then brings out the things they fear most. While his books are sometimes described as "Thrillers" because they do not generally have shambling zombies or cool, hip vampires, they are Horror novels. Don't make the mistake of assuming Evil only comes in spectacular packages. Pick up some of Campbell's books and he will take you on a thought=provoking journey of dread.
I enjoyed THE LONG LOST for several reasons not the least of which was the opening of the book which leads you first to the abandoned Village and then, if that weren't creepy enough, across the low Tide exposed Reach out to the deserted Island. The idea of a such a place existing just off England's shore has a haunting, Archtypical feel to it. When they meet up with Gwendolyn, you are expected them to have some kind nightmarish stalk and kill experience during their night stranded on the Island. Instead, she returns with them and that is when the real Horror begins. True, it begins slowly and unravels at its own pace, but the effect works well and Ramsey Campbell is still one of the most readable writers today. he does not enagage in the purple prose plaguing the Horror Genre today nor does he stoop to long passages of deviant sex just to add a little zing. He doesn't need that. His storytelling is straightforward but un-nerving and the horror lies within the revelations the characters make about themselves. This book reminded me of another excellent Ramsey Campbell, OBSESSION, which plummed similar themes. In that book, as children, the Characters all choose to give away something that matters nothing to them and then as adults, they find out what is the real price to be paid for having done so. If you like in-depth, meaningful character study coupled with universal themes of dread and terror, then this here is your book and so are many of Campbell's other fine novels.
