In his introduction, Sloan reviews the different approaches to journalism history that have characterized writing in the field. This reference is for the serious journalism historian. It includes 2,657 annotated citations from books (including most but not all of the better-known favorites), journals (from 201 academic periodicals), and some Ph.D. disserations. The data is divided into 13 time periods from 1690 to 1989, and there is a special chapter for broadcasting. This is a useful tool for media research collections and the first such comphrehensive compilation to include journal articles. The standard reference, Warren C. Price and Calder Picket's An Annotated Journalism Bibliography ( LJ 11/15/70) sticks to books and includes nonhistory material. A much-needed update, with one drawback: no author index.
