Internationalizing Library and Information Science Education: A Handbook of Policies and Procedures in Administration and Curriculum, by F

The editors of the book and the contributors challenge library schools to internationalize their curricula at a time when provincial nationalism seems to be prevalent and the profession on the whole is more concerned with the how to rather than the why, and when information technology is being studied almost in isolation from the key social issues of the computer age. The book should be read by all individuals concerned with library education and international programs in particular and the library/information profession in general. Library Quarterly

Internationalizing Library and Information Science Education: A Handbook of Policies and Procedures in Administration and Curriculum deals with one of the most critical issues in librarianship today: the complexities involved in operating libraries in a world where the international exchange of ideas, activities, and technologies is a constant force. As defined by editors John F. Harvey and Frances Laverne Carroll, internationalism is the process by which a nationally defined library topic, curriculum, or school becomes responsive to international policies or perspectives. The theme of this volume is this change in perspective.

Wine has been a beverage staple since ancient times, especially in Europe. Today's global wine business is thriving, and American consumption of wine has increased dramatically in recent years, with the health benefits touted in the media. More Americans are becoming interested in learning about wine, and they are taking winery tours and attending wine tastings. The Business of Wine: An Encyclopedia is a necessary part of wine education for everyone from the curious consumer to the oenophile or business student and industry professional. It appeals to even the casual browser who wants to be more informed about wine terminology such as terroir or varietal labeling or what constitutes a Pinot Grigio or a Cabernet Sauvignon. More than 140 entries illuminate the regions, grapes, history, wine styles, business elements, events, people, companies, issues, and more that are crucial to the wine industry.

Today's wine industry is an unusually complex network of interrelated businesses that collectively serve to produce wine and get it into the hands of consumers all over the world. This A-Z encyclopedia shows how production, distribution, and sales segments work together to bring wine to the public and describes the trade in wine and its related subsidiary elements. Written by a host of wine professionals, this is the most up-to-date source to understand what goes into the enjoyment of a glass of wine. An appendix with industry data, sidebars, and a selected bibliography complement the A-Z entries.

This book might be filled with good information, but with the Kindle edition it's not worth finding. The TOC is woefully insufficient. It will point you for example to the 'Alphabetical List of Entries', a 'Topical List of Entries' or 'The Encyclopedia', but once there you will find a list. Not interactive. Just a list. How do you find info on 'Distributors'? The TOC is no help. You have to do a search on the word, then scroll through the instances when 'distributors' shows up. In an encyclopedia of the wine business you can imagine it shows up a few times. How do you tell which instance is the encyclopedia article or just the word used in a sentence? You can't. Also imagine an index where everything is referenced by page numbers and you have a Kindle with location numbers. I like my Kindle, and luckily this book is not my first 'Kindle experience', but I think at a minimum using a Kindle should represent an enhanced reading experience, and a 'reference' book that doesn't let you access the reference materials is unacceptable.

My 10 month old has been flipping through these books on his own for about 2 months now and still loves to babble to himself as if he were reading on his own. The book is sturdy, the pages don't stick, and even slightly pop up as the previous page is turned so my baby can easily pick the next page to turn.

The great thing about the "On the Go" book is that it is easy to read the words and make sounds that go with the book, which is a bit more difficult with some animal and word books. I mean, it's easy to make a cow sound, but how to you make a turtle sound? haha...

Pictures include: digger, hot air balloon, race car, submarine, roller skates, car, truck, car carrier, train, etc..

My son loves this book. We "read" it over and over and over again. The high contrast books are wonderful and it's fun because my older son--three years old--"reads" this book to his baby brother.

The Woman and the Ape: A Novel, by Peter Høeg

The Woman and the Ape is the story of a unique and unforgettable couple--Madelene and Erasmus. Madelene is the wife of Adam Burden, a distinguished behavioral scientist. Erasmus--the unlikely prince--is a 300-pound ape. Brought to the Burdens' London home after escaping from animal smugglers, Erasmus is discovered to be a highly intelligent anthropoid ape, the closest thing yet to a human being. Madelene decides to save Erasmus, and between them blossoms a profound affection as deep as any human relationship. A fable for our time, The Woman and the Ape poses searching questions about the nature of love, freedom, and humanity.

Amazon.com Review
Peter Høeg, author of the international bestseller Smilla's Sense of Snow, has written a fable that explores our human status as inhabitants of paradise lost, and the trade-off between civilization and freedom. The story begins with a captured ape, dubbed Erasmus, a specimen of an apparently new species with a cognitive ability that seems to rival human capacities. Erasmus is rescued from scientific study and experimentation by Madelene, whose husband, Adam, is the zoo director. Escaping to an Eden-like nature reserve, Madelene finds an empathy with Erasmus that develops into a wild sexual liberation. When the pair emerge from Eden to try to stop Adam continuing researches on others of Erasmus' kind, paradise dissolves, and civilization wins out. Read an interview with Peter Høeg.

From Publishers Weekly
No one will ever be able to claim that HYeg doesn't know how to hook a reader. The newest ecothriller by the author of Smilla's Sense of Snow opens with the deceptively simple sentence: "An ape was approaching London." What the vague syntax and flat affect omit could (and does) fill a book. For instance, the "ape"-who's dubbed Erasmus-turns out not to be "some sort of dwarf chimpanzee" as eminent zoologist Adam Burden claims, but a brand new species of ape that just might have the potential for language and higher cognitive functions. The opening line gives little indication of the hubbub Erasmus will raise in a few short paragraphs when he causes the Ark, the ship that has carried him captive to London, to lose its crew and plow mast-first into busy St. Katharine's Dock. Or, a few pages later, when he leads Dr. Burden and his minions on a merry chase through the streets of London. Or, a couple of chapters down the road, when Erasmus seduces Madelene, who just happens to be Burden's beautiful alcoholic wife, and takes her away for a week-long lovefest at a wild animal park. The first line gives no indication of all this because the story and its characters are mere window-dressing for HYeg. While he's a fluid writer who is competent at telling stories, it's in the realm of ideas that he excels. There are long passages in which he analyzes Erasmus and human emotions and London itself in terms that are by turns mechanistic and organic. On one page, London is a "gigantic mycelium," a fungus. On a later page, we discover that London is a worn-out machine," full of blind spots and flat points." At the end of this fine and diverting novel, Madelene explains how she's always pictured angels, and her definition could as easily stand for Erasmus or London or even the Earth. "It's one third god, one third animal, and one third human." 100,000 first printing; major ad/promo. (Dec.) FYI: The movie version of Smilla's Sense of Snow, starring Julia Ormond and Gabriel Byrne, is scheduled for release in March 1997.

From Library Journal
From Smilla's Sense of Snow to Borderliners to A History of Danish Dreams, Danish novelist HYeg has maintained a sharp sense of social critique that, refreshingly, is not wittily dismisive but earnest without being heavy-handed. And what better way to show up human heartlessness and pretension, particularly of the ruling classes, than in our treatment of animals? In this swift-paced, lacerating new work, an ape brought illegally to England ends up at the home of Madelene, a Danish woman married to Adam Burden, director of the Institute of Animal Behavioral Research. Madelene is young, fresh, and deeply alcoholic, but through the glassy haze that HYeg describes so effectively?from the inside out, not simply for dramatic effect but almost as an aesthetic experience, like being in a crystal cage?she can tell the ape is in danger. Madelene sets out to rescue the ape from her coldly calculating husband and his even more frigid sister and, in the process, rescues herself. That is the only predictable aspect of this thought-provoking work, which is too fresh in its writing and its perceptions to fall into the sentimentality one might expect. An air of freedom surrounds Madelene's eventual abduction by the ape, and though their sexual involvment may seem over the top to some readers, you can't help but be carried along by HYeg's convictions. Don't think King Kong; this is much subtler. Highly recommended.

Are humans not also animals?
By Jason
Perhaps meant as fable, "Woman and the Ape" assaults readers with themes of sentience, instinct, freedom, animal cruelty, evolution, and the wicked, selfish pursuits of contemporary humans in a civilized, Westernized society. Even more, the real question posited by the fabulous mind and writing of William Hoeg is: "What makes someone or something an animal? Are humans not also animals?"

Mindlessly passing the day in a drunken haze, Madelene Burden is an alcoholic who lives an aristocratic life via the reputation and riches her husband Adam Burden has amassed as a zoological research director. Along with his callous sister Andrea, the niche Adam has managed to carve out in London society is quite impressive. Everything in Madelene's life is status quo, until Erasmus arrived.

Primate smugglers delivering a specimen to London soon face a catastrophe, as the ape sabotages rigging and causes a dock crash. Escaping the chaos, the ape is soon found, captured, and brought to the labs at Adam Burden's house. The ape's name is Erasmus, and he would soon change everyone's life.

When Madelene notices her carafe of liquor is empty one day, she bibulously searches the manor. Soon she realizes that her workaholic husband is secretly home with a new, unreported subject. Previously spineless, Madelene is invigorated by the intrigue, and after discussions with an uninvolved physician with whom she shared knowledge and drawings of the animal, she soon realizes there is something unique about Erasmus and clandestinely frees him. During their escape, the two learn to care for one another, and she discovers that he may possess distinctly humanistic characteristics. Confronted with power and corruption only the very wealthy possess, the two are soon cornered and forced to make a difficult decision. They bound towards freedom and establish a quaint yet reclusive life amongst the trees of a protected forest outside of London.

It is during this portion of the book that Hoeg expands upon the conventional concepts of the differences between man and animal. Approached with eloquent timidity, Hoeg also broaches the tempest in a teapot of bestiality or interspecies intercourse. However, that may be the entire point: if the boundaries between man and animal are blurred, is the perversion perverse?

Erasmus is often better than man; he doesn't display the ability to passively lie or exaggerate like humans do until influenced by the same cynical human minds. His purity is displayed when he's shown to learn language as a young child does, picking up a complex understanding of English and rudimentary Dutch during his solitude with Madelene. A true indication of the book's overall message, Erasmus refers to humans as the animals, and himself as a person. It's that humanity has become twisted and hedonistic; blurring the line between sentient action and carnal instinct, as if Hoeg believes humankind has devolved in some ways. Given our current culture, sometimes I tend to agree.

Side-swiping the reader like a slap in the face, the curt, surprise ending is absolutely flawless. Within a few pages, the entire thesis of Hoeg's work becomes as undeniable as evolution itself, that despite the absence of the proverbial missing link, our actions alone serve as proof to our species' link to simian brothers.

This is near the top of my short list of unique books that will challenge a reader mentally while providing a creative and entrancing storyline from which it's impossible to wander. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

"We call ourselves 'people.' You, we call 'animals.'"
By Mary Whipple
Though "humorous" is not a word usually associated with Peter Hoeg, The Woman and the Ape, with its irony and satire, is very, very funny. An ape of unknown primate species escapes smugglers at the docks of London, only to be captured by animal researchers and primatologists, who intend to advance human knowledge--and themselves--through their testing and research on him.

The ape, named Erasmus, is actually more intelligent than the men who are testing him secretly at the estate of Adam Burden, a zoolological research director. When Madelene, Burden's alcoholic wife, discovers Erasmus, she helps him escape, and the two go off together. Establishing their own Garden of Eden in a protected forest outside of London, Erasmus and Madelene enjoy seven weeks of mutual discovery, learning, and eventually love, hidden from the outside world. When Erasmus learns to speak English and Madelene's native language, Danish, the two return to London.

Hoeg is brutally satiric of British society and academia as Adam Burden, his evil sister Andrea, the scientific community, the smuggling network, and virtually all other humans are shown to be arrogant in their assumptions about the relationship of men and animals. They will be taught an object lesson, and Madelene and Erasmus are only too happy to provide it. Themes of freedom vs. captivity (real and symbolic), man's role in the evolutionary scheme of things, and the fragility of the environment are developed, none too subtly, as the ape proves his superiority to "civilized" humanity. When asked what he calls the other members of his species, Erasmus replies, "People," indicating that humans would be considered "animals" where he lives.

This satire/sci-fi novel, though intriguing, is strange, becoming even stranger with its interspecies love affair. Madelene is a shallow character with no charm, more apt to lose her inhibitions as a result of alcohol than from any deep feeling. Structurally, the novel falls into two parts--the arrival of the ape, his discovery by Madelene, and their escape, which has some hilarious and even empathetic moments to it--followed by their idyll in a nature preserve and their return to London, a section which is very didactic, fraught with environmental messages and social criticism.

The conclusion, which incorporates many surprises, is a dramatically appropriate tour de force, which outweighs many of the novel's other problems. Perhaps too long to carry the burden of its message, Hoeg's novel is still daring and full of unique images and twists--the product of a creative author whose next novel I eagerly await. Mary Whipple

The colorful, charming story of a country-veterinarian-turned-country-minister--a healer of body and soul. Told with wry Scottish wit, these stories are filled with the kind of hearty embrace of human and animal ways that are reminiscent of James Herriot. Great book . . . . .
By Sally B. Lambert
Mr. Cameron's descriptions of the people and places he served as a vet and a minister are very good reading, much like the James Herriott series. I stumbled on both of his books at a book sale and am very glad I found them. A few pictures or illustrations would have added to the book but it is a wonderful book, especially for animals lovers and farmers. Very worthwhile and entertaining as well.

Fruit of the Lemon: A Novel, by Andrea Levy

From Andrea Levy, author of Small Island and winner of the Whitbread Book of the Year and the Best of the Best Orange Prize, comes a story of one woman and two islands.

Faith Jackson knows little about her parents' lives before they moved to England. Happy to be starting her first job in the costume department at BBC television, and to be sharing a house with friends, Faith is full of hope and expectation. But when her parents announce that they are moving "home" to Jamaica, Faith's fragile sense of her identity is threatened. Angry and perplexed as to why her parents would move to a country they so rarely mention, Faith becomes increasingly aware of the covert and public racism of her daily life, at home and at work.

At her parents' suggestion, in the hope it will help her to understand where she comes from, Faith goes to Jamaica for the first time. There she meets her Aunt Coral, whose storytelling provides Faith with ancestors, whose lives reach from Cuba and Panama to Harlem and Scotland. Branch by branch, story by story, Faith scales the family tree, and discovers her own vibrant heritage, which is far richer and wilder than she could have imagined.

Fruit of the Lemon spans countries and centuries, exploring questions of race and identity with humor and a freshness, and confirms Andrea Levy as one of our most exciting contemporary novelists.

Levy's follow-up to the Orange Prize– and Whitbread-winning Small Island explores how racism reveals itself to a young British-born woman of Jamaican descent, and how the pain can be healed by knowledge of one's roots. Faith Jackson is having a rough go after college: she's fired from her apprenticeship at a prestigious textile designer's and her parents are planning to move back to Jamaica. Though Faith has experienced racism throughout her life, she begins to fear her ethnicity will hobble her career. As she becomes more aware of subtle forms of racism at her entry level job in the BBC costume department and elsewhere, she witnesses a hate crime and, in its aftermath, is sent to Jamaica by her parents for a helpful holiday. It's there, in the second half of the book, that Faith learns a great deal about her extended family and understands why her parents may want to return. Unfortunately, the tone shifts, and what was effective through understatement becomes a rushed unfolding of her family history, complete with diagrams of who begot whom. The change in voice and the narrator's issues with island life (particularly her frustration with its culture) obscure the more poignant aspects of her newfound knowledge. (Feb.)

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School—This book is divided into two major sections. First, readers learn about the protagonist, Faith, and her family's life in England, and that her parents had emigrated from Jamaica on a banana boat, arriving at West India Dock on Guy Fawkes Night and really only knowing England from what they'd learned in school. Life is not exactly as they'd planned it, but over time Wade and Mildred adjust to their new home, get jobs, buy a house, and start a family. They are proud of their children, especially Faith's work in the costume department at BBC, but Faith, who is a credible but sheltered young adult, isn't quite so pleased, as she becomes aware of the hidden and public racism all around her. She decides to visit Jamaica, and the book moves into its second section. Faith meets the family she has known only through letters, photos, and the stories her parents have shared with her. Listening to her Aunt Coral's tales provides her with insight into her parents' lives that she never could have imagined. She makes connections with the people and places of their youth and returns to England with a different perception of her mum, her dad, and herself. None of Faith's Jamaican relationships seems to be deep, but readers sense that maturity is just around the corner, perhaps once she reconnects with her family in Britain.—Joanne Ligamari, Rio Linda School District, Sacramento, CA

From Bookmarks Magazine
Named after the song "Lemon Tree," which grumbles that such a beautiful tree should produce so inedible a fruit, Fruit of the Lemon was first published in England in 1999, five years before the award-winning Small Island. Given the similar themes and content, comparisons were inevitable. Though critics praised Andrea Levy's lovely prose and affable characters, some felt that the book had a few rough edges: the believability of Faith's breakdown, for example, and, in the second part of the novel set in Jamaica, the quick succession of family anecdotes that read like diary entries. Fruit of the Lemon is clearly recognizable as the manifestation of Levy's "gathering talent" (Miami Herald), but it also stands on its own as a bittersweet exploration of an outsider's experience of British culture.

"I didn't want to be black anymore. I just wanted to live."
By Luan Gaines
At twenty-two, Faith Jackson is enjoying her new found freedom, sharing a flat with three roommates and a new job in the costume department of the BBC, secure in the knowledge that her parents are her staunchest supporters. Faith is more than a little shocked when her parents announce their possible intention leave England and return to their homeland, Jamaica, since both their children are grown and able to take care of themselves. Precipitously aware of her fragile place in a society still struggling over the legislature of basic civil rights for all, the casual racism that surrounds her rears its ugly head, Faith subjected to the random ignorance of her white friends, the carelessness with which they disparage the blacks in society with hardly a thought to Faith's reactions: "I knew he wasn't prejudiced. He loves animals." The stupid and insensitive remarks grow increasing irritating to Faith, who has so far isolated herself from the bitter truth.

The gradual rift widens, sundering Faith's easy security. Witnessing a random act of violence against a black female shop attendant and patronized at her job since a questionable promotion as the only black dresser, Faith pulls back from this suddenly unfamiliar world, where race is etched inescapably into daily events with casual cruelty. Betrayed on all sides, Faith abruptly withdraws, unable to contend with the demands of the world around her: "I didn't want to be black anymore. I just wanted to live." Thanks to her parents' wisdom, Faith is sent to Jamaica for a two-week visit, submerged in the riotous island culture with her Auntie Coral and Cousin Vincent. There she receives a much-needed introduction to family history, Coral disclosing the secrets of the family tree. Immersed in her intimate cultural identity, Faith achieves the necessary balance to navigate a world at war with its own worst impulses to separate and subjugate, the hearts and minds of citizens wedded to the past prejudices and assumptions.

Adrift in confusion and growing angst in England, it is Faith's Jamaican experience that that restores her soul and enhances her sense of family support. In true Levy style, the dialog is spot on, both the sharp English quips of the roommates and lilting patois of the Jamaicans. With a particular talent for portraying the daily struggles of her protagonists as they tackle the inevitable challenges of their lives, the author delivers once again, this time a young black woman's identity crisis and racial awakening, the questing Faith renewed by the roots of ancestry. A Tale of Two Halves
By Aidan Meyers
Fruit of the Lemon promises to be a unique take on the issue of a British-Jamaican woman's journey to discover who she is. The book is separated into two sections: the first half in Britain, the second half in Jamaica. The first half of the novel is excellent. It is darkly humorous, yet contains some truly powerful scenes, including providing insight into both the subtle and overt racism in Britain.

Unfortunately, when Faith (the protagonist) travels to Jamaica to meet with her relatives for the first time, the novel's quality sharply drops off. Levy completely changes her narrative style in this section, with each chapter containing a section where one of Faith's relatives will tell her a story. These stories come off as very disjointed, and the reader is never given an opportunity to truly become attached to any of these secondary narrators. Levy posits that Faith has grown through her experiences in Jamaica, but, since most of the second half of the novel is simply someone else telling her a story, Faith's "growth" appears extremely rushed.

This novel had promise, but I would recommend something else.

A Whole Different View of the People of the Empire
By Lynn Galvin
I read Fruit of the Lemon after reading Small Island by the same author. Both are excellent books, providing unusual (Caribbean) perspectives on life and history. The author's story line and dialogues are excellent. The writing is descriptive, filled with unexpected plot developments, and a book that cannot be put down once begun. She writes the kind of fiction that is based on reality and entirely credible. I have already recommended this writer, Andrea Levy, and her books to friends. Interesting, stimulating, worthwhile reading.

White Women Writing White: H.D., Elizabeth Bishop, Sylvia Plath, and Whiteness (Contributions in Women's Studies), by Renee R. Curry

Just as the cultural background of readers shapes how they respond to texts, the context in which writers live shapes what they write. When a context is dominant within a culture, the effects of that context upon an author may be taken for granted and thus overlooked. Race is a powerful factor in shaping literary works. Literature by black writers, for example, often reflects the experiences of African Americans. At the same time, though perhaps less obviously, literature by white writers may similarly reflect the experience of being white. This book argues that H.D., Elizabeth Bishop, and Sylvia Plath wrote from an unproclaimed dominant white perspective that becomes evident in their poetry.

Loosely delineated, writing white constitutes writing authored from an acknowledged or unacknowledged white perspective; writing that implies or explicitly delivers the concept of whiteness to a text; writing that remains unconcerned with white racial politics internal and external to the text; and writing that uses the word white to maintain ideological systems of mastery and dichotomy. This book examines numerous poems in terms of whiteness. Each chapter places one poet in the larger context of historical and cultural racial events prevalent during the time of her writing and explores the particular poems created and published during that period.

"Renee Curry's White Women Writing White is an admirably well researched, independent, brave, and often brilliant and startling study. It will undoubtedly prove germinal in critical whiteness studies, an important new sub-field in literary and cultural studies. This book provides an absolutely new perspective on the poets Hilda Doolittle (H.D.), Elizabeth Bishop, and Sylvia Plath. It draws attention, truly for the first time, to the racial signifiers in the texts of these three great poets. It treats whiteness as a marked characteristic in the way that blackness and Asian-ness have always functioned as marked traits in American literature and culture. It repeatedly and convincingly locates racial meanings in passages that have never been read in that light before. This book transforms the landscape. It is the most significant new work on these poets in years."-Steven Gould Axelrod Professor of English, University of California, Riverside

An Illuminating and Surprising Study

Renée Curry's White Women Writing White is an admirably well researched, independent, brave, and often brilliant and startling book. It will undoubtedly prove germinal (and controversial) in critical whiteness studies. It provides an absolutely new perspective on the poets Hilda Doolittle (H. D.), Elizabeth Bishop, and Sylvia Plath. It draws attention, truly for the first time, to the racial signifiers in the texts of these three great poets. It treats whiteness as a marked characteristic in the same way as blackness and Asianness have traditionally functioned in mainstream American literature and culture. It repeatedly and convincingly locates racial meanings in passages that have never been read in that light before. This book transforms the landscape. The Oaks is an idyllic, up-market country club - but behind its ornately carved walls is an horrific past. Sixty years ago the house was an asylum, home to crazed psychopaths, all of whom disappeared one night, never to be seen again.

From Publishers Weekly
In Masterton's latest, quite effective horror novel, Jack Reed, who runs a muffler shop, comes upon a "castle" that serves as the setting for this gruesome horror story. Jack decides to turn the abandoned mansion into a resort--not that he really knows how. He knows even less about the Druid magic that allowed the recent occupants, dangerous mental patients, to "escape" into the building's walls. Led by a vicious brute, Quintus, the "earth walkers" kidnap Jack's son, Randy, and demand the return of the priest who had trapped them in 1926. The priest is "persuaded" to free them from the confinement of the castle's grounds, but they will not be freed from the earth until each has killed 800 people as sacrifices to the gods. Wasting no time, the tribe "walks off" for a murderous orgy of killing, dragging their screaming victims into the "underworld"--where Randy is still a captive. Readers who fancy unrestrained terror won't mind indulging in the wild suspension of disbelief that Masterton (Mirror) demands.

Don't Go Into the Cellar at Night...Alone !
By Armando M. Mesa
Walkers is one horror novel that rivals anything written by Stephen King or similar authors of the horror genre.Graham Masterton does it again with this chilling novel.Masterton is known for his candid brand of horror writing without getting the reader lost or sidetracked. The first story of Masterton I read back in the 70's was The Manitou (story and movie about an evil ancient Indian spirit entering the world through a tumor in a woman's neck !). The major difference in Walkers is the story and action move at an alarming rapid pace without ever losing the reader or the reader's interest!
The central character Jack finds himself yearning for a greater prospective goal in his midlife. He thinks he finds this realization in an old abandoned 60 year old building which once housed 137 criminally insane patients. He soon discovers the building's horrific secret when his only 9 year old son suddenly vanishes. What is the link between his son's enigmatic disappearance and the abominable secret hidden in the structure of the sanitarium's walls? You must read the book to find out !
I highly recommend this title based on it's author's incredible and otherworldly imagination. This is not a novel about ghosts, nor about a haunted house (in the typical sense). The novel almost echoes a resemblance to a late 80's to early 90's film called People Under The Stairs (or vice versa)... What the reader discovers is that for every fear or phobia he or she might have or think they have, this novel by Graham Masterton will surely instill yet another one ! Do not read this novel alone at home near a brick wall...In fact, you may never look at any of your walls, ceiling, or cellar the same way again !...

Horror at its fastest!
By Sebastien Pharand
When it comes to horror, Graham Masterton has done it all, and quite successfully. Walkers is considered by many to be one of Masterton's most entertaining and most horrific efforts. And entertaining it is. Written at the end of the 1980s, when the big horror boost of that decade was waning, Walkers is a hold-no-barrels horror story that is all about pace. And blood.
The story gives us Jack, the All-American father who stumbles upon an old building on a dark, rainy night. He falls in love with the building and decides he wants to buy it to turn it into a resort hotel. Only, the building is still inhabited, and the people living there aren't quite ready to give away their home.
Ghosts? Not really. They are walkers, people who are trapped between two worlds. They come to the surface by merging into walls. But when they are accidentally set loose, the world itself will be faced with the most dangerous kind of monsters. And even worst, they kidnap Jack's son in the hopes of sacrificing him. A high body count ensues, and a race against time begins.
Is the book fun? Yes, brainless fun. Is the book entertaining? Yes. The suspense is great, the horror is original and the premise is quite fun. But don't expect a masterpiece out of Walkers. The characters are one-dimensional. And every time a secondary character comes into the story, it's not hard to guess what will happen to them. They all end up the same.
But what the book lacks in plot and plausibility, it gains in pacing. The whole thing can easily be read in one sitting. It's the kind of book where you just have to let go of all your notions of realism and just go with the flow. If you're capable of doing that, then you'll probably end up having a good time reading Walkers. It's not Masterton at his best, but it's still very entertaining.
