a realistic "adult" romance...

I don't mean adult, as in racy, but adult in the context that here is a historical romance of "real" characters-hard working, low to middle income folks like the rest of us. You won't find shallow, wealthy rogues or beyond belief beauties here. Farrell and Aiden's story starts in Ireland and quickly sets a fast pace as they must literally run for their lives aboard a ship set for America. The author goes into great detail about this couple, and most folks back then, hardships, poverty and hard lives they had to live.

The romance is set in a realistic pace, the characters grow to love and depend on each other, and the villian is bad enough to carry the story along.

So, if your looking for a real world, thought provoking romance about early America, then I recommend this book-4.5 stars!

Characters who grab your heart

The Irish Bride, Ms. Harrington's Kindle re-release has a lot going for it in setting, theme and characterization. It's a tug-at-your-heartstrings type of story about hard scrabble farmers in 1855 County Cork, Ireland (just after the devastating famine years). Farrell Kirwan has only her brother Michael, who collects rents from the village under the direction of the mighty Cardwells. The story opens with Farrell, a servant in the Cardwell manor, escaping the unwanted attentions of Noel, heir to the Cardwell estate. At the same time her brother is attempting to evict the O'Rourke family from their cottage. When Michael is accidentally killed in the process, Farrell's intended, Liam O'Rourke, reneges on his promise to marry her and agrees that she must escape to America with brother Aidan, the man who mistakenly caused Michael's death. By their leaving, it is hoped the remaining O'Rourkes will be left in peace. A hasty-and unwanted-- marriage to Aidan ensures Farrell will be protected on her flight.

Thus begins an arduous journey for Farrell and Aidan. That he has secretly loved her and she wants no part of him is a burden, but one the ever hopeful Aidan is willing to bear. Their travels take them on a foot journey from Skibbereen to Queenstown (Cobh), then a voyage under horrific conditions to New Orleans, and still later a barge trip to St. Louis and an ordeal by stagecoach to Oregon. Unbeknownst to Farrell and Aidan, Noel Cardwell is hot on their trail, anxious to make Aidan pay for his supposed crime, but even more anxious to recapture Farrell and make her his mistress.

Much of the book details their travails, and only the last quarter covers their life in Oregon. It's a big project that seemed to need more pages; many things were skipped over with little detail. Still, Ms. Harrington has a deft hand with character development, and one cannot help but feel for Farrell and Aidan in wanting them to achieve their happy ending. At times, I felt Farrell seemed sharper than a person of her poverty-stricken background would be, and at times I wanted to tell her to get over her mooning over Liam when the obvious choice for a husband was the man she'd married. Noel Cardwell seemed over the top, but his chase made for a good plot device. I read this book in two sittings. The story flowed seamlessly and, once begun, was hard to put down.

Ms. Harrington proves once again what a fine writer she is. Pacing, dialogue and transitions sparkle. Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of The Irish Bride for your Kindle.

The Irish Bride: Could NOT put it down - cliche but true

I am now going to sincerely gush: I fell into Farrell and Aidan's lives and story. I cared about them. I wondered if their love was doomed because of all the trauma between them. The end of their story brought tears to my eyes. I would like to mention all the parts of the book that were so compelling to me, but I don't want to give anything away for other readers. The story had a lot of action yet was evenly paced and issues were resolved. I came home from work one night and told myself I would only read for a half hour. I tried to force myself to do my other work but...alas. I picked the book up again to read while I ate. I read it in the living room, I read it in bed and nothing got done until I was done with the book, but I didn't care. You know how a good book grabs you and won't let you go? That was The Irish Bride - it would not let me go and I wouldn't put it down. My next book purchase will be Harrington's The Bridal Veil.

Learn how to learn

This is a great book for anyone who wants to learn how to learn. We learn by remembering what we are taught, so knowing how to remember is knowing how to learn. The methods in this book are very arcane to the majority of people, but that's because memory enhancement is not a popular subject in the U.S. I have a lot of educational books I am to do over the summer, and this book will help me learn how to retain the information I am taught. I believe learning how to learn should be mandatory in the first year of public education in the U.S. Anyways, you can remember anything with the methods taught in this book. I recommend this book to everyone who is not evil. There is one important point I would like to make though. The "numbered room" system taught as the first method in this book is inferior, at least in my opinion, to the "memory palace" method. Just to give you an idea of what these things are, they are mental environments where you store imaginary images. I don't need to go to in depth to explain why the "memory palace" is better. The "numbered room" forces you to use environments that are square or rectangle, and you need to order your information according to the layout the book gives you. By putting your images in this sequence in your "numbered room", you can access the images in the order of which you placed them, assuming that you need to recall information in order from first to last. With the "memory palace", you can still put images in a mental environment, but it doesn't need to be a square or rectangular room. You can also order the information from first to last as well. The "memory palace" does the same thing as the "numbered room", but it is less limiting. All the other methods in this book are fine. For information on the "memory palace", either do your own research or check out the book "Moonwalking With Einstein".

About the Author

Roger Priddy left school at 16 with just one qualification―in art. He went to Berkshire College of Art and Design and trained as an illustrator. His first job in children's books was working with the publisher Peter Usborne, at Usborne Publishing, and then he worked with Peter Kindersley at Dorling Kindersley, where he spent 16 years. Priddy became Creative Director of DK's Children's Division and was Managing Director of the children's mass market publisher Funfax when it was acquired by DK.

In 2000, he created Priddy Books with John Sargent at St Martin's Press to create innovative and imaginative titles for children, from first books for babies through early reference titles for older children. Since then, over 30 million copies of Roger's 200 plus books have sold worldwide, with five of his books―My Big Animal, My Big Truck, Happy Baby Words, Happy Baby Colors and Puppy and Friends―each selling over one million copies. He is also the author of Big Board First 100 Words; Big Board Books Colors, ABC, Numbers; and Bright Baby Noisy Monsters. His creativity has been recognized with numerous industry awards. Priddy lives in London with his wife Zena and their four children.

Hugely popular!!!

I have a babysitting service called Napa Valley Nanny. I've watched MANY babies/toddlers in the 10 month-2years range, and this book was (I say was, because it got chewed up by last 18 month boy...) SOOOOOOOO popular!!!! I'm buying 3 at Barnes in Noble next week.
Boys and Girls alike LOVE this book! The textures keep them fascinated for such a long time, they always would go back to it during my 4 or 5 hours with them. They love to say "Ball" or "Truck" and when they come to the Teddy Bear with fur, it would put such a big smile on their faces. This book will get a lot of use.
Absolutely recommended!

More Touch & Feel, Please!

The bright colors and simple photo illustrations are nice, but there's barely any "touch" in this touch-and-feel book. I know some pictures don't lend themselves to a tactile element (such as apple or fish), but some pictures seemed so obvious (a teddy bear) and were left flat, so to speak.

My baby still likes this book, but it doesn't hold his attention like the DK Touch & Feel books.

My son loves this book

My wife got this book randomly. Turns out he loves it! Always reaches for it. After just a couple times of going through it, he knows what texture is next and he reacts to them differently. However, he especially loves to run his little fingers over the truck grill. Its a simple, easy, little book that any child will love. You won't be disappointed.

Had trouble getting into it.

I had a little trouble getting into the book. The motivation seemed wrong to me. But then I don't read a lot of mysteries.

Pretty good, but with a few weak points

The various relationships Marti has with her kids, partner and boyfriend are some of the highlights in this book, indeed in the Marti McAlister series. And for the most part, the mystery itself is well plotted. However, I felt a little let down when Johnny's killer was revealed, not just because it was telegraphed about 10 to 20 pages prior to the revelation but also because it was kind of lame. Also, I didn't buy Marti's reasons for waiting three years to look into her beloved husband's death. This is a man she's known since childhood; the father of her children; the love of her life; the only man she's ever been intimate with. And she waits three years to find out why he died? Plus, she only looked into it because several people prodded her to do it. Why? If you know in your bones that your man didn't kill himself, and common sense ought to tell you that an experienced cop really can't accidentally shoot himself in the head, it kind of only leaves one conclusion. That plot point stuck with me, unfortunately, throughout the book, lessening my enjoyment. Still, it's a decent read, as ETB is a talented writer. If this is the low point of her series, then it's a series woth having.

SETTING THINGS RIGHT

Three years have passed since the death of Marti's husband in an undercover narcotics operation. His death was thought a suicide. Although Marti had her doubts she never pushed for any further information. Now another agent has died under similar circumstances. Like Marti, this agent's wife is told that the death is a probable suicide. His widow informs Marti that he too was suspicious about her husband's death and was asking questions.
Marti sees that she can no longer remain silent. She must set the record straight over her husband's death. In this mystery we come across a different Marti as she relives the pain, shock and memories of her husband's death. You find a woman who is very sensitive but must hold back her emotions in order to unravel this long overdue mystery. Watch her and Vik weave through a quagmire of police cronyism and corruption as they uncover information long hidden in the investigation of her husband's death and those of other key players.
Brace yourself for the violence, racism and betrayal of friends as these two detectives pour through the evidence that will put their lives in danger. This side of Marti is one in which you will never forget.

A memorable story with plenty of bonuses

Eggs Over Evie is a fun, uplifting story about relationships, cooking, and being 13 years old. You'll love Evie. She handles the fact that she has a new stepmother and will be having a new step-sibling with both courage and doubt. She's a real girl with real feelings...and a love of cooking. You'll enjoy the recipes and cooking tips at the end of each chapter, as well as the humor and likable characters. The writing is spot-on for readers 9-12--and for anyone who enjoys middle grade novels.

A great tween read

This book has it all: a thirteen-year-old heroine, divorced parents, a cat, a dog, and a cooking class. I was unsure how the author would intertwine to make these work, but she does.

The characters are fun, dealing with everyday struggles in a lighthearted way. Evie in particular is struggling with the fact that her dad will now be dad to twins, twins that will be born to another woman (AKA stepmother; it does have to be G-rated here). While in many novels this type of plot consumes the life of the character and eats at him/her, Evie keeps the part of her dad she loves the most, cooking. Her dad is a famous television chef, and she has a knack for it as well. So much so, she decides to take a cooking class one evening a week during her summer break so she can learn the ropes of it all.

Evie is able to keep that part of herself and of her dad and make it into a positive. Many of us could take a page from Evie's book - she is a delightful, vulnerable character who really just wants her family back, but she accepts that life is continually changing, and she moves forward. This is refreshing to read...and it makes the book one I would recommend to anyone ages 10-13 who is dealing with divorce.

Great read for kids experiencing divorce!

Summary: This book is written in the first person. Evie is a 13 year old girl who is trying to deal with the divorce of her parents. Her dad is a celebrity chef, and he passed on his love of cooking to Evie. Her dad is now remarried, and their "new" family is expecting twins. To make things worse, her mom is starting to date again. Add an ornery old neighbor, some needy animals, and a cute cooking partner, and you have quite the emotional roller coaster!

My Reaction: I liked how this book portrayed the effects of divorce in a a simple, realistic, yet calm matter. It doesn't have all the excessive drama that is often associated with books like this. Evie is a character you connect with early and willingly join on an emotional journey to acceptance. Mrs. Hamilton, the grouchy, old neighbor, was my favorite character. She acted mean and sassy, but you knew that she was really just lonely. Within each chapter, the author mentions a food item, and, at the end of each chapter, she includes the recipe to try at home - how creative! Good read about finding and accepting our place in the world.

Is caring for elderly parents the responsibility of families, government, nonprofit groups, religious organizations, business, the community—or all of the above? Kennedy, founder of the Boomer consulting firm Age Lessons, says all of the above in this scattershot polemic, not quite a call to arms and not quite a practical guide for adults facing the problems of helping older parents near the end of life. The author's argument that daughters, or daughters-in-law, are the primary caregivers for elderly parents, is contradicted by a Met Life survey she cites showing that 40% of caregivers are men; as well, she devotes a chapter to sons who provide care. Kennedy asserts that the women who fought for child-care services 30 years ago should now form a movement for elder care, yet that child care movement was far less successful than she claims. Most of the book argues points that are already obvious to caregivers, yet the part of her case that is aimed more at policymakers is too thin to be persuasive. Unethical, stolen information

Ms. Kennedy acquired her information by going to support group message boards and taking posts without asking the posters if it was alright. Some of us have had personally identifying usernames and details published in her sham of a book. Many of us come from abusive families and now our abusers can find out what we've said about them in our support groups. Stealing other people's posts is not research. Ironically, Ms. Kennedy has only encouraged large groups of caregivers to boycott her book.

Misleading expectations

The Daughter Trap: Taking Care of Mom and Dad And You - L.Kennedy

According to the publisher's blurb this book will help women "successfully juggle caregiving, careers, kids, siblings and marriage on their own terms." I think not.
The book is very good at defining the problem and acknowledging the sacrifices made mostly by women. Fully half of the book is devoted to the ranting complaints of women taken from chat lines and interviews. I'm well aware of the burdens placed on families when disabled elders need care. And I have, from personal experience; no doubt that it is more often daughters who shoulder the burden. In stressful circumstances there is a true need to vent frustrations an avoid isolation. I was disappointed that this book provided little practical advice beyond publishing the problem.
Kennedy is clear about the need for a comprehensive infrastructure to support elder care. She offers some projected solutions for the not too distant future when the boomers we are reach the age of the parents we currently care for.Unfortunatley there is little concrete advice for those dealing with the problem now. Entire books could be written about limit setting and defining parameters of care and I found less than a chapter of workable suggestions. At best the book is a starting point as she does site numerous resources.

Not the Book for Trapped Daughters!

This book was being touted at my local library and I thought it might give me some strategies and solutions as caregiver for my 90 year old mother. I was wrong. The book is reasonably well written and does an acceptable job of describing the problem. If you are interested in the problem in the abstract or from an intellectual or sociological point of view, it will probably be useful. If however you are already in the trenches and desperate for practical strategies, it is a waste of your scarce time. For practical help, I strongly recommend "When the Time Comes: Families with Aging Parents Share Their Struggles and Solutions" by Paula Span.

Denman discovers Mander's plan to use the Salamanders--who are resurrected as human torches and can incinerate others at will--to found a Fourth Reich and take over the world. To thwart him, Denman enlists the aid of a 12-year-old Pechanga Indian shaman with 20th-century street-smarts and ancient magic. The duo struggle to outmaneuver Mander, but Denman fears that the insect-eating fascist is himself an acolyte of some omniscient malevolence. Social responsibility, as outlined in this savvy tale, is the foundation of a civilized society and our first defense against chaos.

Bizarre Plot, Gruesome Horror

What type of world do we live in when books like this are out of print? I ask that question often when I think about Graham Masterton's gripping horror novel, "The Burning." Masterton is definitely one of the undervalued horror novelists in recent times, a slightly obscure writer who has written numerous spooky thrillers over the years that combine great gore sequences, engaging characters, and bizarre plotlines that would falter in anyone else's hands. This is only the third Masterton novel I've read in recent months, but I'd like to read all of his stuff at some point. The problem with doing so is that most of his books are out of print. It's not like publishing houses don't know who he is; his new books find mass-market release with regularity. What us horror fans need is for Leisure to start reprinting his back catalogue. I know I would snatch up every one of Masterton's old books.
"The Burning" builds itself around one of the strangest plots I've ever encountered in horror fiction. What's great is that Masterton makes it believable. What we have here is a story combining Richard Wagner's lost masterpiece "Junius," ancient pagan rituals concerning immortality, the Third Reich, Native American spirituality, and reanimated humans called Salamanders who can burn people at will. Now does this book have potential or what? Even better, the author doesn't skimp on the Salamander's ability to set people on fire. There are numerous examples of people torched by these evil beings, told in intricate detail in page after page of cringe worthy descriptions. I don't find anything remotely amusing about people on fire in real life, as I can't think of anything as painful as suffering burns. But in a fictional horror novel where fire serves as a major plot point, the author in question better deliver the goods. Masterton goes above and beyond the call of duty in this department in "The Burning," even torching a bus full of initiates who seek entry into the cult of the Salamanders.
The hero of the story is one Lloyd Denman, a restaurant owner who has everything in the world going for him. He has a successful business, a beautiful fiancée, a wonderful house, and a nice car. Regrettably for Lloyd, tragedy strikes when his girlfriend self-immolates in a McDonald's parking lot. Lloyd is dumbfounded. Why should his beloved Celia do such a horrible thing to herself? She had a great life, with a successful career in music and a mutual happiness with Lloyd. Denman just can't bring himself to believe that Celia's death was suicide, and he begins looking around for clues to this tragic incident. It isn't too long before Lloyd finds some old sheet music stashed in Celia's piano, music that looks like an original work by Richard Wagner. This discovery, along with another one made at the scene of Celia's immolation, leads Lloyd directly to the tender mercies of Otto Mander and his stooge Helmwige. These two characters are strange, dangerous birds directly responsible for a lot of the weirdness going on. Through Mander, Denman learns that Celia's suicide is only the tip of an iceberg stretching back to pre-Christian Europe, and that in the present day a dark idea better left in the ashes of 1940s Europe is soon to attain resurrection through Mander and the Salamanders. It is up to Lloyd and a small band of oddball heroes to save the world from the evil actions of Otto Mander.
"The Burning" ultimately rests on its author's abilities, and Masterton possesses wonderful abilities that allow him to deliver in spades. The characters are interesting, especially the Nordic Helmwige and the bug eating Otto Mander. These two creepy characters only get weirder as the story progresses. Lloyd Denman is also believable as the slightly milquetoast businessman who rises to the occasion to fight an evil he doesn't comprehend. The conclusion blends Wagnerian opera, Nordic ritual, and reptilian monsters into a seamless, albeit slightly mystifying, ending. It all makes for a great, fun read. I'll continue to read Graham Masterton books as I come across them, as I've yet to suffer a disappointment at the hands of this horror master. I hope you give Masterton a whirl, too.

History, suspense, and horror

"Wow!" That's how I felt when I finished The Burning. I wholeheartedly agree with the review posted here which asked, "What kind of world do we live in where books like this are out of print?" That's a very good question, and if you enjoy horror and happen to get your hands on The Burning, you'll understand why.

Because the other two reviews laid out the story in great detail, I'm not going to rehash the plot in this review. What I will say is that the book has a lot of elements that kept me riveted to the page and had me reading late into the night to finish off the book. There's history, the arts, suspense, police drama, and of course, horror, sprinkled throughout the text. Though Masterton definitely takes liberties with German history and the Nazi era, this is a work of fiction, so that is to be expected, and his speculations as to the demise of the Third Reich and the fate of those involved in that evilest of empires made the story that much more intriguing.

If you do find that you enjoy The Burning, I would also strongly suggest Walkers and Death Trance, two other Masterston books definitely worth a read.

A Better Synopsis than what was provided.

"Lord Denman is stunded when informed that his fiancee is dead. The circumstances are grotesque: she calmly immolated herself in a parking lot ... and smiled as the flames leaped up. Celia's is just the first bizarre death by fire. A busload of people bursts into flames in the desert. The passengers die .... calmly, waiting for the fire to reach them.
Celia and the passengers have become Salamanders - immortal beings, fire made flesh. Followers of a cult whose rituals were set to music by Richard Wagner, they have sworn to serve Otto Mander and the fourth Reich he intends to found"
I just could not put this one down. I could not go to sleep till i read it cover to cover.
