Eggs over Evie, by Alison Jackson

Twelve-year-old Evie Carson lives with her mom. In an apartment across the lake, Evie's celebrity-chef dad is starting a new life with his young second wife, Angie, who's expecting twins. To make matters worse, Evie's dad has custody of the beloved family dog. Navigating her new family situation is difficult, and Evie turns to her love of cooking as a way to stay connected to her father. Through cooking classes, Evie finds an unexpected friend in Corey, whose eccentric aunt Shanti might be able to make everyone a little happier. Evie learns to look outside herself, help others, and make friends where she never thought she could (she also learns to make a pretty darn good soufflé).

From School Library Journal
Starred Review. Grade 4–6—Thirteen-year old Evie Carson loves to cook, which is fitting for the daughter of a renowned celebrity chef. Now that her parents have divorced and her father is living with his new wife on the other side of town, Evie spends a lot of time in the kitchen, and her mom has even signed her up for summer cooking classes at the rec center. It's been a year since her dad moved out and took their dog with him, but now there are twins on the way, her stepmother is trying to be her friend, and her mother is going on her first date since the divorce, so Evie is feeling just a little bit out of sorts. Although she and her mom have finally begun to fill the empty places left by her father's departure, it takes a crotchety neighbor, a handsome cooking partner, some rescued animals, and a lot of recipes to make the future seem as inviting as the past. Each chapter is headed by a quote from a celebrity chef that portends the events to come and concludes with a recipe for whatever Evie is preparing. Spot illustrations appear throughout. This is an appealing book with an authentic voice, particularly when discussing the upheaval and discomfort caused by divorce, as well as the effort and good will required to smooth the transition.—Teri Markson, Los Angeles Public Library

From Booklist
A year after her father moved out, taking the family dog with him, Evie’s parents are divorced, her father has remarried, and he and his new wife are expecting a baby. Evie and her mother still keenly miss her father (not to mention the dog), but change is in the air. As the summer goes on, Evie develops a promising relationship with her cooking-class partner, begins to feel more comfortable with her stepmother, and even comes to appreciate her grumpy next-door neighbor. As narrator, Evie shows herself to be an astute observer of the people around her, and throughout the summer, she becomes increasingly aware of the adults as individuals with their own worries. Each of the 16 chapters ends with a recipe and a cooking tip. Since Evie’s father is a celebrity chef and she shares his interest in food, there’s plenty of culinary talk throughout the story, but relationships are at the heart of this appealing, illustrated chapter book. Grades 4-6. --Carolyn Phelan

A memorable story with plenty of bonuses
By Leslie Santamaria
Eggs Over Evie is a fun, uplifting story about relationships, cooking, and being 13 years old. You'll love Evie. She handles the fact that she has a new stepmother and will be having a new step-sibling with both courage and doubt. She's a real girl with real feelings...and a love of cooking. You'll enjoy the recipes and cooking tips at the end of each chapter, as well as the humor and likable characters. The writing is spot-on for readers 9-12--and for anyone who enjoys middle grade novels.

A great tween read
By Book 'Em Blog
This book has it all: a thirteen-year-old heroine, divorced parents, a cat, a dog, and a cooking class. I was unsure how the author would intertwine to make these work, but she does.

The characters are fun, dealing with everyday struggles in a lighthearted way. Evie in particular is struggling with the fact that her dad will now be dad to twins, twins that will be born to another woman (AKA stepmother; it does have to be G-rated here). While in many novels this type of plot consumes the life of the character and eats at him/her, Evie keeps the part of her dad she loves the most, cooking. Her dad is a famous television chef, and she has a knack for it as well. So much so, she decides to take a cooking class one evening a week during her summer break so she can learn the ropes of it all.

Evie is able to keep that part of herself and of her dad and make it into a positive. Many of us could take a page from Evie's book - she is a delightful, vulnerable character who really just wants her family back, but she accepts that life is continually changing, and she moves forward. This is refreshing to read...and it makes the book one I would recommend to anyone ages 10-13 who is dealing with divorce.

Great read for kids experiencing divorce!
By tmalcore
Summary: This book is written in the first person. Evie is a 13 year old girl who is trying to deal with the divorce of her parents. Her dad is a celebrity chef, and he passed on his love of cooking to Evie. Her dad is now remarried, and their "new" family is expecting twins. To make things worse, her mom is starting to date again. Add an ornery old neighbor, some needy animals, and a cute cooking partner, and you have quite the emotional roller coaster!

My Reaction: I liked how this book portrayed the effects of divorce in a a simple, realistic, yet calm matter. It doesn't have all the excessive drama that is often associated with books like this. Evie is a character you connect with early and willingly join on an emotional journey to acceptance. Mrs. Hamilton, the grouchy, old neighbor, was my favorite character. She acted mean and sassy, but you knew that she was really just lonely. Within each chapter, the author mentions a food item, and, at the end of each chapter, she includes the recipe to try at home - how creative! Good read about finding and accepting our place in the world.
