The Politics of Sexuality: A Documentary and Reference Guide (Documentary and Reference Guides), by Raymond A. Smith

Since the landmark 1965 Supreme Court ruling Griswold v. Connecticut established a Constitutional right to privacy, the regulation of sexuality has become an extremely volatile area of American politics. From reproductive rights to sex education, pornography to gay marriage, the balance between community norms and individual autonomy has been fiercely contested. These and related subjects are often viewed in isolation, as though they were entirely separate issues. Yet as the documentary record makes clear, they are in fact closely interrelated, and their impact is cumulative. By addressing a broad array of topics at the intersection of sexuality and politics, this volume highlights the connections and makes an important contribution to a debate that touches every American.

Taking as a starting point the 1965 Griswold decision―sometimes said to have launched the sexual revolution―the approximately 100 primary source documents assembled here either mark watersheds in themselves or are representative of a broad range of political developments. The documents are drawn from all quarters of U.S. political life. They include legislative texts; proposed laws and constitutional amendments; state and federal court rulings; political party platforms; and interest-group position statements.

From Booklist
The 1965 Supreme Court ruling Griswold v. Connecticut establishing a Constitutional right to privacy is sometimes said to have launched the sexual revolution. The intervening 45 years, however, demonstrate that the U.S. still struggles over the issue of the government’s proper role in regulating aspects of sexuality among consenting adults, ranging from reproductive rights to sexual expression and including the very definition of marriage. This volume collects more than 60 key primary documents (all in the public domain) that reflect concerns and attitudes between 1965 and 2008 on issues such as sex education, birth control, gay rights, and the changing norms of sexual partnerships. Documents include Supreme Court rulings, selected text of representative laws, congressional testimony, and transcripts of press conferences and speeches by political figures. Each thematic chapter includes a historical overview, explanatory commentary on the documents, and a bibliography of print and online sources. The commentary helps readers understand concepts such as covenant marriage and intersexuality. Enlightening sidebars reveal the positions of liberal and conservative factions on various issues as well as stances from other countries for comparative purposes. It is interesting, for example, to note that the Republic of South Africa established same-sex marriage in 2006, joining Canada and many countries in western Europe in protecting sexual orientation against discrimination. Black-and-white photos, a bibliography of selected resources, and an index enhance a thought-provoking volume. Oxford’s Sexuality: A Very Short Introduction (2008) covers many of the same issues, but this one focuses on the U.S. and on documents. Also available as an e-book. --Sally Jane

"Smith (political science, Columbia U. and New York U.) collects 62 primary source documents that mark key events in the regulation of sexuality in the US, from the 1965 Supreme Court ruling Griswold v. Connecticut, which established a Constitutional right to privacy, up to 2008. Included are legislative texts, proposed laws and constitutional amendments, state and federal court rulings, political party platforms, and interest-group position statements. Along with commentary, historical and comparative international information, and photos, the documents relate to reproductive rights, contraception and abortion, sexual expression and sex education, women's equality, sexual orientation and identity, marriage, and sex scandals." - Reference & Research Book News

Review
"This judicious and definitive source on the legal regulation of sexuality in the United States is a "must buy" publication for all libraries and universities. Dr. Smith is to be congratulated for his astute archival scholarship and for providing an excellent selection and analysis of such a wide range of source documents, which in its entirety provides a rich history of the sexual politics in the U.S. since 1965. Beautifully organized and clearly written, this reference guide is appropriate for use at both the undergraduate and upper grade levels of secondary education." (Diane di Mauro, Ph.D., Columbia University, Faculty, Sociomedical Sciences Dept.; Associate Editor of Sexuality Research and Social Policy)
