Covering both modern and traditional theater in South, Southeast, and Far East Asia, this alphabetically arranged encyclopedia offers a wealth of detailed information on a relatively underdocumented topic. The articles generally fall into 4 subject areas: country or region; biography (actors, directors, playwrights, and some designers, but not musicians or dancers); theatrical genres or forms; and general topics, such as Actors and acting or Women in Asian theatre. Focus is on "performances reliant on narrative structures, characters, and—apart from forms that might be considered pantomimic—language," ranging from Gigaku, a now-extinct performing art brought to Japan from Korea in 612, to modern Chinese spectacles that mix Western and traditional forms and are expected to be part of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Articles range in length from half a page (a minimum of 250 words) to more than 20 pages for some of the general topic areas. These longer articles are divided into sections covering differing geographic areas, for example, Actors and acting—Japan, Actors and acting—Korea. Cross-referencing is extensive. Larger entries have further-reading suggestions appended, and the set as a whole contains a lengthy topical bibliography. The detailed index as well as the alphabetical and topical contents lists give numerous entry points. JILL SALEN is a costume maker who is widely employed in the theatrical costume industry. She has made costumes for many clients including the Globe theatre in London. She is a lecturer in costume at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and has been measuring and producing patterns of period garments from private and museum colections for many years.

Good for theater, not good for home sewer

I bought this hoping to find some good patterns and directions to make vintage inspired lingerie like tap pants, garter belts, and chemises. While the photos are lovely, the patterns are not for the home sewer. The information about sizes is nearly nonexistent, and you will have to scale the patterns up as well as in all probability make at least 2 muslins (one to see how big the pattern is, and then the other to your measurements!) Personally, I consider this way too much work to obtain basic undergarments (and this is coming from someone who has scaled up period patterns before)! This would be best for people interested in textile history and theater, but I am thinking even for those people, it would not have quite enough historical information since the descriptions are pretty brief. The garments are also on the more unusual side- many are maternity, others are styles which were made on the cusp of fashion changes, and so on. I don't see many people wanting to make a maternity girdle!

I was also disappointed that the 'sewing techniques' were basic instructions that you would find in any good sewing book (and even the ones in this book are so brief they assume you know some construction already). The 3-4 "simple" projects in the back were a bit of a let down, with the exception of the 1906 petticoat which I think would actually make a lovely (non-lingerie) skirt made in garment fabric as well. (The others were a very basic bralette and something else I've forgotten already).

For the home sewer interested in reproducing vintage lingerie, I do NOT recommend this book for patterns and technique. The pictures may be interesting for home sewers and artists because some of the decorative detail is wonderful, but check it out of your library first to check before you buy. I've given it 3 stars because it's probably a good start on (but still of possibly limited usefullness) period lingerie resources for theater folks and historians.

The history was very interesting and she chose some beautiful examples but if you are really expecting to use the patterns, forget it. They are very raw, hand drawn and very difficult to follow and I've been sewing for over 30 years.

Misses the Mark

"Vintage Lingerie" by Jill Salen is perhaps helpful as a costume reference for 20th century lingerie, but is sorely lacking in several areas:

1) Several of the garments are anomalies that do not serve much useful purpose except as curiosities (ie Khiva corset, Spirella fitting garment, Patent Brassiere 1920's).
2) The text that describes the garments attempts to have a slightly humorous tone, but often comes across as judgemental or snarky with descriptions like "trussed up" and " presumably the purchaser could have found a more comfortable way to achieve her desired shape than wires and lacing".
3) The quality of the patterns is poor. Are they supposed to be funky and handmade looking like the first Moosewood cookbook from the 1970's, or why are many of them drawn without the assistance of a ruler or curve ? There are too many balance marks on even short pattern pieces that ignore the most basic premises of marking.
4) The photography is well lit and show the garments clearly, with the exception of the Khiva corset, whose black on black details vanish. No photographer was credited - was it Jill Salen ? However, several of the garments were not properly pressed before they were photographed (see: Blue Silk Slip, 1930's). It appears that the same antique dress form was used to photograph many of the garments. However - this form looks to have been a late 1920's form with little bust definition and very slim hips(or may have even been a man's form !). This works well for the garments of the period - but does not show the later bras well. In addition, when the garments were padded to be photographed, white tissue or quilt stuffing was used which clearly shows though the sheer panels (hint: next time use tissue that is close in color of the form the garment is photographed on). Worst of all - when many of the bras were photographed they were were placed on the form off center (there is a seam that runs down the center front of the dress form). This drove me nuts ! It wasn't one garment, once, it is visible in most of the shots !
5) It would have been helpful to have seen the front and back of many of the garments, or an interior view of the more complex foundation garments. If you are looking for technical construction references an average listing on Ebay will show you much more about the garment inside and out.
6) The finishing techniques section is only applicable to hand finished garments, like the slips and teddies. The majority of the garments shown were factory made items, but there is no insight as to the type of machines used, industrial finishes, or process.

I would feel much more confident about Jill Salen's abilities if there were muslin garments shown made from each of the patterns, based on the examples in the book.

In short - what is this book ? A pattern book ? No, not really, the patterns are not usable when scaled up, especially as the size of the pattern is not indicated. A reference book ? No, not really, there is not enough information about the garments, like actual fibre content of the fabric. Jill Salen does tell us that she purchased this item in a thrift store, or that she was told that set was "made by nuns in Ceylon", but this does not provide much in the way of research except as entertainment perhaps. A coffee table book ? No, the garments are photographed to show the basic details, but go no further than this.

I give this "Vintage Lingerie" two stars for existing, but hope that Jill Salen's next book will work harder to fill in the gaps, since she seems to love this topic.

Great police procedural

The notorious Baron Alain Marcus Casimir Von Rianocek is one of the world's highest paid assassins even though he is heir to the throne of the Germany's Bavaria. Though he lives the privileged life of a European aristocrat in Argentina, Alain's success as a hired killer is based on his professional life remaining anonymous.

In 1977, Chicago police officer Larry Cole ended Alain's string of twelve straight kills when he prevented the murder of a Mafia chieftain. Years later, the Baron still thinks of Cole as a personal albatross. After completing his current assignment in New York, Alain spots Cole in a restaurant and takes off like a guilty party would. His panicky race to escape costs him his anonymity. Over the years the two men cross paths again and again but eventually one will take the other down.

Hugh Holton draws on his own experience as law enforcement official to create an excellent police procedural with international overtones. TIME OF THE ASSASSINS provides the audience with a glimpse into the mindset of a professional assassin, a rogue CIA operative and the inner workings of a shady law firm with ties to the illegal drug industry. The fascinating story line never slows down. Lovers of crime fiction will fully enjoy their time spent with this tale.

Greatest Ever

I started reading Hugh Holton's books this year. Just found it on the library shelf. I wanted to read them all. I have read all of his books and find "Time of the Assassins" to be the best one yet. I have ordered it, also his new book "The Thin Black Line" and "Red Lighting" which I could not get from the library. I am sorry that we will not be able to read more books by him. A sad lost to the readers and writers world. Gripping suspense and a surprise ending. What a writer he was. He writes about things we know, but are afraid to say. So today.

The real Hugh Holton is back!

This time Hugh Holton gives us an excellent story that is both believable and entertaining. This is Holton going with his strengths -- solid characters, great police procedures and enveloping mystery. It doesn't get much better than this unless you're also a fan of Eleanor Taylor Bland's Marti McAllister Mysteries (which apparently Holton is since he mentions her in his acknowledgments). However, unlike the McAllister police character, Holton's Chief of Detectives Larry Cole is still one dimensional. He sacrificed his wife and son for his career and ends up becoming a stud puppy for two very deranged sisters whose plot (despite his super-cop instincts) Cole fails to recognize. Go figure. Nevertheless, Time of the Assassins is a far better effort structurally than Holton's Red Lightning, Left Hand of God or Presumed Dead. The high-quality work which brought Holton and his cop character, Larry Cole, to national prominence, Chicago Blues, is evident in Time of the Assassins. Bravo, Mr. Holton, Bravo!

Great resource for research writing

Five years ago, I purchased "LB Brief" as a reference and it has never left my side. For the ENGWR300 class I am taking now, Diana Hacker's "A Writer's Reference" is the required text and seems to be the preferred choice for most of the instructors at my college, particularly for the MLA/APA updates. My instructor suggested that this book never leave my side. Overall, I think I prefer "LB Brief", but Hacker's book is still a great reference with very clear examples of MLA & APA formatting. I will likely keep both books by my side throughout my college career and beyond.

About the Author

Roger Priddy left school at 16 with just one qualification―in art. He went to Berkshire College of Art and Design and trained as an illustrator. His first job in children's books was working with the publisher Peter Usborne, at Usborne Publishing, and then he worked with Peter Kindersley at Dorling Kindersley, where he spent 16 years. Priddy became Creative Director of DK's Children's Division and was Managing Director of the children's mass market publisher Funfax when it was acquired by DK.

In 2000, he created Priddy Books with John Sargent at St Martin's Press to create innovative and imaginative titles for children, from first books for babies through early reference titles for older children. Since then, over 30 million copies of Roger's 200 plus books have sold worldwide, with five of his books―My Big Animal, My Big Truck, Happy Baby Words, Happy Baby Colors and Puppy and Friends―each selling over one million copies. He is also the author of Big Board First 100 Words; Big Board Books Colors, ABC, Numbers; and Bright Baby Noisy Monsters. His creativity has been recognized with numerous industry awards. Pictures are cute and festive but very little to touch or feel. Images that especially lend themselves to touch and feel concept are plain and flat (toad, broom with the witch, owl). Disappointing.

I recommend this thesaurus to not only internationals but also Americans as well. Maybe this thesaurus is not enough for deep readings and writings but I believe it will meet your most needs. I suggest you to use this thesaurus with a thick and broader thesaurus, in this way if you do not find an equivalent for a particular word in this one, you can easily refer to other big thesaurus. Other than that, the most useful feature of this thesaurus is that it has not only synonyms (which most thesauri only have) but also antonyms.

America's Prophets: How Judicial Activism Makes America Great fills a major void in the popular literature by providing a thorough definition and historical account of judicial activism and by arguing that it is a method of prophetic adjudication which is essential to preserving American values. Dow confounds the allegation of the Christian right that judicial activism is legally and morally unsound by tracing the roots of American judicial activism to the methods of legal and moral interpretation developed by the prophets of the Hebrew Bible. He claims that Isaiah, Amos, and Jesus are archetypal activist judges and, conversely, that modern activist judges are America's prophets. Dow argues that judicial restraint is a priestly method of adjudication and that it, not judicial activism, is the legally and morally unsound method.

Race and gender discrimination, separation of church and state, privacy rights, and same-sex marriage are all issues that have divided our nation and required judicial intervention. Every time the courts address a hot-button issue and strike down entrenched bias or bigotry, critics accuse the justices of being judicial activists, whose decisions promote their personal biases and flout constitutional principles. This term, despite its widespread currency as a pejorative, has never been rigorously defined. Critics of judicial activism properly point out that when judges overturn laws that enforce popular norms they thwart the will of the majority. But Dow argues that so-called activist judges uphold two other American legal values that are as deeply embedded in American legal culture as majoritarianism: liberty and equality. He challenges the notion that judicial activism is unprincipled, and he provides a vocabulary and historical context for defending progressive decisions.

About the Author

DAVID R. DOW is University Distinguished Professor at the University of Houston Law Center and Visiting Professor of History at Rice University. His areas of expertise include contracts, constitutional law, and death penalty law. He has handled more than fifty appeals, including 25 death penalty appeals. He earned his J.D. from Yale University, where he was an editor on the Yale Law Journal. He is the author of three books, including Executed on a Technicality (2005) and Machinery of Death (2002), and more than one hundred book chapters and professional articles. His essays and editorials on abortion, polygamy, gay marriage, affirmative action, separation of church and state, biblical law, and judicial activism have appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Christian Science Monitor, The Progressive, The Houston Chronicle, and The Dallas Morning News.

A short treatise arguing for judicial activism

Back in 2009 when this book was published, and still in print. The term `judicial activism' was code for liberal judges ruling in favor of liberal causes. Now that we have very conservative Supreme Court and the likelihood that it will remain so, this term seems to have lost its sting.

Be this as it may, David R. Dow , Distinguished Professor at the University of Houston Law Center and visiting Professor of History at Rice University lays out a case in favor of judicial activism. He builds his case on a biblical division of legal power. He identifies the biblical judges as the priests who adjudicated disputes. The prophets were those who interpreted the words and by extension the will of God.

He gives the examples first of Rabbi Hillel famous summation of the old testament as being "Thou shalt not do unto others, that which you would not have done to yourself". He then quotes Jesus as having restarted this principle, except in a positive formula "Do unto others as you would have done to you." The special relevancy of these statements is that they encode a directive not to be found in any explicit biblical quotation. That is both formulas represent interpretations rather than strict readings.

He then opines that American Judges have the particular duty of stating when the rule of the majority has, or is likely to become the dictatorship of the majority. The older term he cites is the problem of the "tyranny of the majority". This term is a quote from James Madison's Federalist Paper No 10.

Clearly the importance of these sources is to make the case directly to the so called Christian Right, that judicial activism has both biblical precedence and the support of the founding fathers of the US Constitution.

Having rooted the case for judicial activism in both holy precept and in the intentions of the authors of the Constitution, Row then specifies as the normal routine of Judges to be to:
rule on the facts of a case
identify the judicial principals that apply to a case then
use interpretations to apply the legal principals to the facts and
thereby render the decision.
That is, it is not only is it biblically and constitutionally correct for a judge to interpret the law, it is normal practice.

All of this takes about 20 pages. The remaining 150 pages list Dow's favorite activist judges and particular cases. For Dows' purposes, judicial activism "rises" with Griswald vs Connecticut, the 1963 decision that first encoded America's "Right to Privacy". In rounding out his wish list for prophetic /activist judges Row makes his arguments for the liberal view on Race, Religion, Same Sex Marriage, Abortion and Euthanasia.

In depending on liberal causes and liberal preferences in these issues, Row exposes his entire argument as being driven by the political left. Herein lays the trap.

To a degree the history of America is the struggle to enfranchise all of its citizens and to insure that all individuals are equal before the law. The future of America court decisions is going to be the balance of power between citizens and corporations. In this struggle decisions like Citizens United, which extended the political influence of corporations over the elective process is barely a footnote. In a world where the privacy protected in Griswald vs Connecticut applies only to government. The internet at once ends privacy and empowers corporations to control what had been the private employee conversation. Specifically the free speech of employees as practiced in social media can and is made subject to the supervision and dictates of employers.
Courts have been and will continue to rule on what "free market" means in an environment where corporations control access to the information needed to make free market decisions and are, allowed lie, confuse and misdirect any open discussion of the information needed to make such decisions. Even the existing decision to expand the right of eminent domain to allow for commercial rights to supersede some private property rights portend fundamental shifts in the relative rights of citizens versus corporations. Is it too soon to note that the word `Corporation' does not exist in the Constitution.I am not sure that Professor Row wants the prophets of judicial activism to be as powerful when the inspiration is in favor of corporate power.

This is the real problem of our court system. As long as "our side" Right or Left, wins what are in the moment, critical decisions, it is for the other side to argue that the system is "broken" or that judges are legislating from the bench. In the play 1776, Ben Franklin is supposed to have said: "A rebellion is always legal in the first person, such as "our rebellion." It is only in the third person - "their rebellion" - that it becomes illegal." Professor Row strongly believes that in first person; "our judicial activism is prophetic and devine" It is unclear that he has the same appreciation for `Their judicial activism'

In terms of style the book is generally readable and accessible to a general reader. It is brief, yet dense, with substantial content. I cannot believe it will sway conservative opinion, but it does provide some interesting points.
