Educating People with Allergies
By Valerie B. Lull
The authors of this book present a comprehensive and informative view of the subject of food allergies and intolerances. Endorsed by the Harvard Medical School, the book covers everything from who is at risk, to identifying symptoms, to evaluating symptoms.

There is a lot of helpful information about children with food allergies, and practical advice like sending a food intolerant child off to school, informing the child's caregivers, how to identify the allergies in children. There is also good information for adults with food allergies. The author's describe some of the background information about allergies, like how the immune system functions, and what kinds of tests to get from your doctor.

There is a brief section on alternative remedies, and a discussion of current research going on to help find a cure. I would have liked to have seen more on alternative treatments. This book is especially helpful to anyone with a food intolerance or allergy and especially for parents of children with food allergies. -- Valerie Lull, Author, Ten Healthy Teas

Practical Prescriptions for When Your Child Says, "My Stomach Hurts."
By Donald Mitchell
"When wisdom enters your heart,
And knowledge is pleasant to your soul,
Discretion will preserve you;
Understanding will keep you," -- Proverbs 2:10-11 (NKJV)

For more years than I care to count, my children have regularly doubled over in pain and shown obvious distress as they said, "My stomach hurts." Many hours followed treating the symptoms and identifying causes. No two of the youngsters had identical issues. I found the whole process to be more than a little bewildering, and no physician ever explained what was going on in a satisfying way.

As I read Understanding Your Food Allergies and Intolerances: A Guide to Their Management and Treatment, my initial reaction was to wish that this resource had been available 40 years ago. Fortunately, it is available to you today. If your children routinely have painful reactions to eating or drinking, you'll find much helpful advice in this book for both what kind of physician you should seek and how you can accumulate evidence that will help to identify ways to help your youngsters.

I must admit that before reading this book I didn't appreciate that food intolerances can be so important. I thought that food issues mostly related to allergies and lactose intolerance.

I was pleased to see that the authors are candid about what is and isn't known about these issues. In many cases experimentation with alternative solutions presents the best chance of improving matters. I wish I had known that when many physicians began to experiment with my youngsters (without calling it that).

The writing style isn't as academic and remote as in most such books authored by physicians. I found the style to be as accessible as I can imagine any book being on this subject.

I intend to share a copy of this book with each of my children whenever they say, "My children say that their stomachs hurt." Perhaps it will make life a bit easier for the next generation. I pray that will be so. If it occurs, this book will be an enormous blessing to my family. I hope it will be for your family, as well.

Nice work!

Wide survey, narrow scope.
By Michael
If you have comprehensive health coverage, no autoimmune disorders, and no nutritional deficiencies, this book may be for you. In quality writing, a relatively broad review is given to IgE (standard) food allergies, and most newcomers would no-doubt benefit from this reading, hence the 4 stars given; but I have some noteworthy reservations.

For me, being that I have no health coverage and very limited financial capabilities, the book fails to provide much useful information. The solutions are heavily biased toward standard medical handling for given symptoms (that is, "go to an X doctor; get Y and Z tests"). I can understand this, to an extent, since MDs are accustomed to giving this type of advice, but I imagine that I am not the only one who goes around reading books because medical care is inaccessible. In other words, I am looking for scientific, DIY diagnosis and treatment, and this book provides very little -- at least in my case, which briefs as negative on IgA tissue transglutaminase (tTG), allergist-diagnosed dermatitis herpetiformis (DH), chronic fatigue, chronic dermographia, and other autoimmune symptoms.

There is fair evidence to suggest that certain food intolerances may lead not only to autoimmune conditions, but also to nutritional deficiencies (and perhaps vice-versa). Such autoimmune conditions and related nutritional deficiencies often have specific syndromes and some can be indicated via specific tests. But this book pretty much fails to address any such conditions or tests, with only minimal attention given to Coeliac Disease. Moreover, very little advice is given for treating any such conditions.

The authors denounce IgG food-intolerance testing as being useless, supporting their claim with the example that if a person regularly consumes beef, the blood-IgG levels for beef will be high, regardless of whether the person has an intolerance to beef. I can say from my personal experience (using Omega Diagnostics' FoodDetective) that this is simply not so: I have regularly consumed corn-flour-based products for some time, yet corn came up absolutely negative; I consume tea, beef, and tuna nearly every day (multiple-servings-worth) and have consumed them regularly for my entire life, yet all three came-up completely negative; among those that did show a reaction for me (in descending order), cow's milk, gluten, rye, and wheat were the strongest, though I recently came-up negative on a skin-prick test (IgE) for wheat. BTW: Those substances showing the greatest IgG reactions did indeed show strongly, and there were others with only modest reactions. It seems that the authors have little, if any, experience with IgG testing.

Perhaps my quest is beyond this book's quenching.
