The volume opens with a useful overview plus a time line, 1623-1999, and closes with a skimpy general index. Written in dry, passive-voice prose and scantly illustrated with drab black-and-white photos, this title merits consideration as, at best, a secondary purchase behind Pauline Webb and Mark Suggitt's Gadgets and Necessities (ABC-CLIO, 2000) or Roger Bridgman's superficial but more visually appealing 1000 Inventions and Discoveries (DK, 2002).
