Review
“I love what you are doing and the way that you do it. I used to think that if i just told someone to quit the sugary stuff they would do it. I usually lost those patients. I didn't realize how locked into the sweet taste must people are--really addicted. You propose an easy solution, gradualism, or getting the sweet taste and good nutrition at the same time. I need your book to enhance my almost effective doctor-patient rapport. I can say 'do it' and I know they can.” ―Lendon H. Smith, MD, author of Feed Your Kids Right

Good Book
By Miss Maggie
"A Reader" from 1998 is reviewing the wrong book. "Sweet and Sugar Free" by Karen E. Barkie, does not contain any recipes calling for date flour. The book "A Reader" is referring to is called "Cook With Me SUGAR FREE" by Sharon D. Gerstenzang. It is also available here at Amazon, and is an excellent book.
This book, "Sweet & Sugar Free" by Karen E. Barkie, is also an excellent book. The recipes are not as simple as your recipes calling for 2 eggs, 2 cups of sugar and 2 cups of flour. When cooking with fruits and fruit juices, you need slighly different techniques to come up with a tasty finished product. That said, the techniques are explained in detail and after making a few of them, you really feel confident enough to try to alter some of your own recipes, to make them with fruit juices instead of sugar or honey.
Karen Barkie's recipes are reliable. The baked goods have a nice texture, a sweet flavor, and are family-friendly. After learning and experimenting with fruit-sweetened recipes and techniques, the recipes become quite easy. If you are avoiding artificial sweeteners or sugar, honey and other sweeteners that send your insulin soaring, these recipes will really hit the spot. They taste good, feel good in your mouth, satisfy the kids, and are relatively inexpensive easy to prepare.

Sweet and Sugarfree
By JMB
I have so far tried the peanut butter cookies and the lemon moon cookies... and they were unedible. I'm hoping some of the cakes and pies are better, but the two cookies I tried so far are terrible! No one in our household will eat them.

A good foundation
By Lisa
Yes, these recipes can be a little bland, and they aren't really low-calorie, but for novice bakers who want to cut refined sugar out of their diets, this book provides basic recipes that are easy to liven up. I for one need to know how much flour, baking soda, oil, etc. to use.
The author herself offers many suggestions for toppings and mix-ins to help sweeten or spice up these recipes. The fruit breads, for example. are really good with some no-sugar-added jams swirled into the batter. And I double or triple the spices called for. Finally, it's important to remember that this book came out decades before natural sugar substitutes like Stevia (although it's not a good idea to go overboard on that because of the licorice undertaste, but 4 packets for the fruit breads is about right to me).
Don't expect to duplicate the taste of your favorite sugary snacks. Fruit juice-sweetened recipes are different - but I for one have come to prefer them.

It's not easy being the middle child, especially when your dad is a Navy Chief. Meet Piper Reed, a spunky nine-year-old who has moved more times than she can count on one hand. From Texas to Guam, wherever Piper goes, adventure follows, inspired by her active imagination, free-wheeling spirit, and a bit of sister magic. Unlike her older sister, Tori, Piper loves being part of a Navy family, and unlike her little sister, Sam, Piper is no prodigy genius. Piper is Piper―fearless and full of life.

From Booklist
In her first chapter book for younger readers, which is apparently the first in a series, award-winning author Holt tells a lively family story that draws on her experiences of growing up a Navy brat. For nine-year-old Piper, it is sometimes hard being the middle kid, especially now that the family is once again going to a new base. When they get to Pensecola, Florida, the first day of school is "not everyone's, just ours." It doesn't help that Piper is dyslexic. But she copes in class, and she creates a club to make friends. The family stuff is the heart of the story, not only the constant moves and Dad's being away on duty six months at a time but also the tension, laughter, and love in Piper's relationships with her bossy older sister and her talented younger one. Davenier's occasional black-and-white pictures capture the daily family dramas. Readers will look forward to the next book. Rochman, Hazel

“...award-winning author Holt tells a lively family story that draws on her experiences of growing up a Navy brat.” ―Booklist

“Crisp writing from a National Book Award winner...” ―Publishers Weekly

“Piper's lively imagination, wholesomeness and moments of ‘sister magic' are likable and believable. This easy chapter book, based on Holt's own experiences, is spot on with the details of roving family life. Davenier's fluid black-and-white drawings fit the mood and characters . . . Launching a new series, Piper's foray sets sail with verve, fun and spunk.” ―Kirkus Reviews

A Sensational Soaring Story!
By Debra
I just finished reading this book to my 2nd grade students. They absolutely loved the book. We also did a quick extension and looked up the "Blue Angels" on line. It was fascinating and exciting to visit the"Blue Angels" website. The students really liked hearing and seeing the jets perform on line. As a teacher, I loved the descriptive writing style. "The stars became glitter sprinkled across black velvet." We highly recommend this book!

Great for kids
By A. Zigler
My daughter absolutely loved this book! She could relate to Piper so well, she is 8, Piper is 9, her daddy is a chief, so is Piper's, and Piper is moving to Pensacola or Pepsi-Cola, we live in Pensacola. This was the first book that my daughter actually sat down and read all the way through in a matter of a few days; she didn't want to go out and play, play vidoe games, or watch T.V., she just wanted to read about Piper. I highly recomend this book to/for all "Navy Brats!"

Ramona with a twist
By J. Grambo
A cheerful, energetic book about 9-year-old Piper Reed, whose dad is a Navy Chief. Her family has had to pick up and move every year or two, so when Piper's dad says they will move to Florida, no one is really surprised. There's only one problem -- they've never moved during the school year before, and Piper's a bit worried because she is dyslexic. How will she fit in?

Girls in grades 3 to 5 will enjoy reading about how Piper adjusts and learns to love her new home.

In sixth grade now, the wildly imaginative Rex Zero and his friends hatch a plan to replace Miss Garr, the substitute teacher from hell, and Rex takes on the persona of none other than "Dr. Love." Of course, events spin hilariously out of control. Miss Garr's cruel behavior is a mystery to Rex. But then, Rex's world is full of mysteries! There's the beautiful woman in white. Why does she have a black eye? There's the little black book filled with names. Who could it belong to? And why has Rex's father hidden a letter that begins: "Mein Liebchen"? Could all these things have something to do with the mystery of love? Underneath all of this is the age-old question of how to stand up and be a man. For if, as Rex's dad says, "a man's got to do what a man's got to do," how does Rex know what to do and when to do it?

Delightfully eccentric characters, humorous scenes of well-intended plans gone awry, a finely crafted plot interwoven with serious themes about love and war―this new Rex Zero from Tim Wynne-Jones is a gem!

From School Library Journal
Starred Review. Grade 5–8—That smart and funny sixth grader introduced in Rex Zero and the End of the World (Farrar, 2007) is back. The book is set in 1962 in Ottawa, where Rex lives with his quirky family and his scheming pals. Wynne-Jones perfectly and poignantly captures Rex's confusion with life and grown-ups, from his thinking that Armistice Day is "Our Mistress Day" to his struggle to understand his dad's zany humor. The boy wrestles with several mysteries. He can't understand why his teacher, Miss Garr, is so mean, and why his sad father keeps old photos and letters written in German. The biggest mystery presents itself, however, when Rex finds an address book that leads him to a beautiful woman whom he feels compelled to rescue from an abusive relationship. While laugh-out-loud funny in places (especially when Rex and his friends find a way to thwart the miserable Miss Garr), the book also deals with more difficult topics, especially with wartime experiences that weigh on Dad's heart. It will not matter that the 1960s references, especially to television shows, may not be familiar to young readers; Rex's first-person narration will ring true. He learns the ultimate coming-of-age lesson: life is not neat and tidy but rather messy and human. While it is not necessary to have read the first book to enjoy this one, children will no doubt want to read it after and will look forward to more adventures.—Connie Tyrrell Burns, Mahoney Middle School, South Portland, ME

“* That smart and funny sixth grader introduced in Rex Zero and the End of the World is back. . . . While it is not necessary to have read the first book to enjoy this one, children will no doubt want to read it after and will look forward to more adventures.” ―School Library Journal, starred review

“* Wynne-Jones brilliantly plays Rex's comfortable childhood world against the adult one Rex is just beginning to discern; the elegantly simple child-logic he applies to the latter yields both catastrophic and heroic results. . . . Well worth the ride.” ―The Horn Book, starred review

“* Set in Ottawa in 1962, the story offers well-crafted, eccentric characters, laugh-out-loud humor, and a generous dose of 1960s culture. . . . Fans and preteens contemplating that long bridge to adulthood will be charmed.” ―Booklist, starred review

“These seemingly uncorrupted characters are well aware of darkness. None of it touches their heroic childlike determination.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“There are some laugh out loud moments. Descriptions are often memorable or lyrical as when Mother says things that happened during the war are ‘like stones on your father's heart.' Thoroughly enjoyable tale of Ottawa in the sixties and some neat kids.” ―Sue Carita, The Toadstool Bookshop

“Once again, Wynne-Jones handily balances the humorous quirkiness of his hero with truly troublesome undercurrents of adult concerns that disturb his peace.” ―The Bulletin for the Center of Children's Books

“Rex's fans . . . will be charmed.” ―Book Links

A Wilderness of Mirrors, by Dev Stryker

Amelia Pierce, daughter of spies, was trained from early childhood to be the perfect spy. Intelligent and athletic, brave yet cautious, in her first appearance Amelia thwarted the plans of an international terrorist group.

In A Wilderness of Mirrors Amelia confronts an insidious plot to take over the United States. Conspirators have planted moles at the highest levels of the government, and are about to replace them with operatives totally brainwashed and under foreign control. It is easy, since the moles and the operatives are identical twins, kidnapped during childhood.

Drawing on the latest research into mind control and the mysterious connections between twins, A Wilderness of Mirrors puts Amelia Pierce in the heart of the conspiracy, with the clock ticking toward the destruction of democracy in America.

Amazon.com Review
Dev Stryker, the pseudonymous offspring of a husband and wife writing team with 30 million book sales and three Edgars between them, is back with the aptly named A Wilderness of Mirrors, the first Amelia Pierce outing since 1993's Deathright. As the book opens, wrongfully disgraced ex-CIA agent Burt Sergeant is teaching his wife Amelia, herself the daughter of a murdered CIA agent, to fly a Cessna, and Amelia is contemplating divorce--until she spots a body.

Not that one event had anything to do with the other. The divorce had been a long time coming; the body was a surprise. It was just that for the past hour or so, while Burt was ostensibly teaching his wife the rudiments of flying, Amelia had been fantasizing about crashing the seaplane into the side of a cliff.

Fortunately for the sanctity of marriage, there's nothing quite like a washed-up (literally) American youth who officially doesn't exist to ruin a reverie. Add to that hordes of mysterious twins who may hold positions of power at the highest levels of America's government. Mix it up further with Russian defector and ex-head of the KGB Grigor Valentinin, the opportunistic CIA Caribbean Chief of Station David Stanhope, under-the-gun Assistant Deputy Director of Operations Bill Avery, and his very strange deputy, Danny Zotter. Then factor in lepers, zombies, and Shining Path guerrillas, and you've got yourself a good-to-the-last-Andropov of a spy novel.

Stryker has delivered a fast-moving, well-populated, sparingly written (almost too much so) poser that will likely have you flipping pages leftward nearly as often, and as fast, as you flip them to the right. --Michael Hudson

From Booklist
This is Stryker's second effort featuring Amelia Pierce, daughter of spies and the wife of Burt Sergeant, cashiered CIA operative turned bitter pilot for hire. Not exactly a fun couple, Amelia and Burt spend a good part of the first half of the story bickering, but then they get down to the business of thwarting a plan to take control of America by replacing key officials with their own brainwashed twins who were kidnapped at birth. (The question of where the bad guys found all those twins is never satisfactorily addressed.) Along the way, Amelia and Burt tangle with a few Shining Path guerrillas and manage to restore Burt's tarnished reputation. For the record, Dev Stryker is said to be the pseudonym of two authors whose books have sold many millions of copies. This second Amelia Pierce thriller is very likely to sell quite a few more. A good read
By A Customer
The insidious plan to take control of America without shedding one drop of blood is brilliant, though costly in terms of time and money, but expected to pay monster dividends. The plot is simply to abduct one identical twin as a child. Patiently brainwash and train that child by raising them into what you want them to become. Though some investments will fail, nurture them for years, so as adults they can replace the sibling left behind once that twin attains positions of importance in the government.

The conspiracy is successfully working until a minor glitch occurs. Amelia Pierce and her husband Burt Sergeant rescues an unconscious boy lying on the sands of the Caribbean's Isla Santa Vittoria. Shockingly, the lad turns out to be Matt Conrad of Dearborn, Michigan. Soon, Amelia, daughter of two deceased CIA operatives, begins to investigate how Matt ended up on the Sergeant family island. This leads her into the center of the plot to end America, as we now know it.

The third Amelia Pierce espionage thriller, A WILDERNESS OF MIRRORS, is an exciting tale that never allows the reader a moment of rest. The story line is filled with action, modern mind control theories, and multiple twists that will stun the audience with its ease and enjoyment. Amelia is a wonderful eccentric character, whose offbeat inner thoughts enhance the tale though it does slow the pace down at times. Still, Amelia,s attempts as an amateur spy with the proper genes makes this a clever tale its predecessors (see DEATHRIGHT and END GAME) a must read for genre fans.

Don't waste your time
By James Clements
From the beginning I found the story line weak and a little confusing but I was determined to "push" though to the end. About ¾ of the way through the book the true story line was finally laid out. I found the idea that due to their generally accepted special psychological ties twins can "transmit" volumes of information to each other just too weak to enjoy. There is lots of blood and guts killing to raise the excitement, but all done by a woman who has never had any experience in field activities. We are asked to believe that at her father's knee she learned all the skills a first class terrorist ever needed "just in case" she ever needed them. A tribe of women warriors, a house wife that plans an attack on a fortified facility and kills dozens of terrorist, a student pilot flying a DC-3, mysterious voices communicating to the characters; it is just all too too hokey and disjointed for me.
PS; If you are looking for insight into the CIA, this is NOT the book for you.

Dandelion: Memoir of a Free Spirit, by Catherine James

“The rare celebrity-crammed memoir that would be worth reading even without the bold-faced names."--Kirkus Reviews

Catherine James’ neglect by her young, beautiful mother cast a shadow over her Los Angeles childhood and made her long not for normalcy, but just for escape. Escape to her beloved grandmother Mimi, or to her Aunt Claire, a former beauty queen who'd had a glamorous life with ex-husband Busby Berkeley.  Escape to her father, a race car driver who had been out of her life almost since the day she was born. Escape even to school, where she would at least be taken care of.  Instead, Catherine was finally abandoned by her furious mother to become a ward of the state before she reached her teens.

A chance meeting with a very young Bob Dylan inspired Catherine to run away with only one goal: to get to Greenwich Village.  Dandelion follows Catherine’s extraordinary life, as she is entranced by Eric Clapton; taken up by the beautiful people in Andy Warhol’s Factory; and begins romances with rockers Jackson Browne and Jimmy Page.

While raising her son, whose father was Denny Laine of the Moody Blues and Wings, Catherine finally returns to her West Coast roots, reconnects with her family and discovers that her mother hasn’t changed but her father has: he’s become a heartbreakingly garish transsexual.  Moving and shocking by turns, Dandelion is a completely different view of a celebrated pop culture scene, and a fractured mother-daughter relationship.

“James’ story…take[s] this movingly written autobiography well beyond the realm of sex, drugs and rock & roll.”—Music Connection

From Publishers Weekly
Like Pamela Des Barres (I'm with the Band), James was a California It Girl and very young groupie of the early rock-and-rollers, and in this candid, workmanlike autobiography, she shares her accidental fame. James was the product of beautiful, well-connected Beverly Hills parents who divorced: the father became a transvestite, coming out to James when she was a young adult at Musso & Frank's in Hollywood, as depicted in a wild opening chapter; the mother, Diana, went through a succession of husbands and eventually relinquished caretaking of her daughter to the state. Having dated Bob Dylan by age 13, James ran away from the Visa Del Mar orphanage to New York and hung out at Andy Warhol's Factory. She met Denny Laine of the Moody Blues, who became an abusive husband and father of her child while she was still in her teens. She shopped on Kings Road in Chelsea and partied with members of the Beatles, the Who and the Rolling Stones, among others. When the marriage didn't work, she took her son back to California and romanced Jackson Browne. Somehow James makes do with a little help from her friends, finding modeling work, doubling for Diane Keaton and going back to school. Ever cheery, never self-pitying, her memoir is by turns insipid and sweet. (Oct.)

Review

"Abused child and lover of many a rock star puts her life down on paper.James first hit the music scene in the 1960s, when the Gods of Rock still blazed paths of wanton devastation across America before retiring to their well-appointed British castles for heroin and philosophy. She came from a Southern California kind of nowhere, raised by a speed-freak mother of uncommon brutality and a mostly absent, alcoholic father who later became the world’s ugliest transsexual (we learn this in a shocking flash-forward that opens the book). Sent to an orphanage at age 12, James managed to get out one weekend and make friends with 22-year-old Bob Dylan, who was playing a gig in Santa Monica. In 1964, still only 14 years old, she lit out for Greenwich Village. Being someone who makes things happen, she remade herself into a fabulous It girl, landing a screen test with Andy Warhol and partying with rock stars. Two years later, involved in a romance with the Moody Blues’ Denny Laine, she forged papers to get a passport and joined him in London, where she bore his child. More harrowing abuse, a whirlwind romance with Mick Jagger, infatuation with Jimmy Page and plenty of Performance-like decadence followed. Her later years were calmer, as she concentrated on raising son Damian Christian and finding odd employment as a model, a movie scenery painter and a stand-in for Diane Keaton, but she still found time to fall hard for Jackson Browne. James is no prose stylist, but she cuts to the quick with an admirable economy, treating the mundane passages of her life with the same sanguinity as the ones littered with the rich and famous. There’s plenty of pain here, but little wallowing. The rare celebrity-crammed memoir that would be worth reading even without the bold-faced names."--Kirkus Reviews

"Cameos certainly hold the reader's attention, but so do the author's resourcefulness and strength of character...straightforward, conversational read."---Library Journal

Miss James' story is one of the resilience of the human spirit
By D. Yates
At first, I thought this book was going to read much like the groupie stories that her contemporary, Miss Pamela Des Barres, writes. In fact, it is much better written and more compelling than any mere groupie memoir. Catherine James' story is the tale of a woman who survived profound abuse & neglect at the hands of her mother; yet she still grew into a beautiful young woman, both inside & out. Yes, she had her share of rock & roll romances & other adventures, but these seem almost tangential to the real story: that of the heartbreak of being a child unloved & abused by her mother, and neglected by her alcoholic father. Everything, from her youthful rebellion to her spirited adventures are colored by these facts. Yet never the victim and always the victor, she tells her story with humor & warmth. The only drawback to the story were the numerous and distracting typos, which should have been edited out.

Seems more like a memoir of a mental illness
By Missy from Maine
I'm almost finished reading this. It's hard for it to pass the straight face test. A lot of her stories do not seem realistic. At all. It seems very far fetched in many points such as the mothers abuse and the way she had Bob Dylan coming to her school at ? Age 13. Then she fell in with Jackson Brown but all the photos are destroyed. There is not a single picture of her with any of her so called consorts. Sounds like a lot of day dreaming. Add in her being on stage with several of these musicians. Yeah right!!

Little girl found...
By Patti Quinn
I read this amazing book in two days...couldn't put it down! It is filled with hideous abuse, unbearable pain and soul soaring happiness. It is a book that gives testament to the indomitable human spirit, and the promise that hope and faith and sheer determination will save us from whatever hell is created for us by our parents.
Ms. James shares her world with us, a world she was lucky to escape...the horror show that was her beautiful, but absolutely evil, mother... her ineffectual, but charming and devastatingly handsome father, her crazy aunts and her saving angel, her preternaturally young and beautiful grandmother, Mimi, the woman who gave Catherine the strength and magic she needed to save her own young life.
After running away from the orphanage, where her wicked speed freak mother (and when I say mother,I use the term VERY loosely), Diana decided she should live, she lands on her feet running in NYC, and with a little help from some of her very famous friends (a young Bob Dylan, for one!!), carves out a life for herself that took her all over the world. A life that was fun, interesting, loving and really quite amazing given her hard knock youth...the most amazing of all was that she became a wonderful mother at the tender age of 16, giving up a career in modeling that was sure to take her to dizzying heights.
I stand in awe and admiration at the courage it took to write this book, and I thank Ms. James from the bottom of my heart for allowing us a look into her torturous past, and the extraordinary road she took to arrive at her beautiful future.

Dr. Agatston Answers Frequently Asked Questions about South Beach Dieting

I'm doing so well on Phase 1. Why can't I stay on it indefinitely?

There are two types of people on the South Beach Diet: those who cannot wait to start Phase 2 and those who never want to see Phase 1 end.

Why are some people so enamored with Phase 1? The reason is that it's simple and to the point. You don't have to do a lot of thinking about food choices. You're basically eating lean protein, high-fiber legumes, low-fat dairy, good fats (including some nuts), and plenty of vegetables. Those highly processed refined carbs that were your downfall are out of sight and, within a few days, out of mind (at least for most people). You're encouraged to eat until you're full and snack before you get hungry. And every time you step on the scale, you get a big grin on your face because those unwanted pounds and fat are just melting away. So it's not surprising to me that Phase 1 fans often ask, "If I'm doing so well on Phase 1, why do I have to move on to Phase 2?" Phase 1 is not meant to be a long-term eating plan. Its dual goals are to jump-start weight loss for people who have 10 or more pounds to lose (thus providing immediate positive reinforcement) and to control swings in blood sugar and eliminate cravings for sugar and refined starches. Phase 1 can also have a positive effect on sugar in people with pre-diabetes. In just 2 weeks, you should have achieved these two goals and be ready to move on.

Once your sugar and cravings are under control, there's a key reason to go on to Phase 2: we don't want you to miss out on the myriad vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that come from reintroducing whole fruits and whole grains to your diet, not to mention the added fiber. These foods contain thousands of phytochemicals that protect your body against a host of diseases, including heart disease and cancer. If you were to continue indefinitely on Phase 1 and deny yourself these foods, you would not be learning how to make good food choices in the real world. More importantly, you'd be missing out on some of the best medicine nature has to offer.

In addition, if you were to continue with the smaller palette of foods recommended on Phase 1, your diet would get dull over the long haul. And once you're bored, you're much more likely to revert to your old eating habits. For the diet to truly become a lifestyle--one that allows you to sustain weight loss and garner all the related health benefits--there has to be variety and satisfaction in your eating plan. That's another reason why we move you on to Phase 2 so quickly.

Remember, it may take you longer to lose weight by following the three phases of our diet. But the chances of keeping that weight off are far better.

Can I still eat as much protein now that I'm eating more carbohydrates on Phase 2?

As you know, on the South Beach Diet, we don't expect you to count grams of protein or weigh your food on any phase. Now that you're gradually adding satisfying high-fiber whole grains and fruits to your diet on Phase 2, you'll naturally be less hungry, and the amount of lean protein you require to feel full will no doubt be less than you were eating on Phase 1. That said, I encourage you to eat some protein--fish or shellfish, lean beef or pork, white meat chicken or turkey, or soy protein, for example--along with these good carbs at most meals.

Protein helps slow down the digestion of carbohydrates, which means that your body will make less insulin, your sugar swings will be reduced, and you won't crave more food in between meals. I also urge you to eat slowly, savor your food, and really enjoy the variety of foods you'll introduce on Phase 2. If you do this, your focus will no longer be on how much protein you can have because you'll never be hungry. Another tip: Once you're satisfied, push your chair away from the table. It's fine to leave some food on your plate at the end of a meal.

Can I really eat anything I want on Phase 3?

If you're talking about dessert as an occasional treat, of course. On Phase 3, we don't regulate what you can eat. Yes, you can finally have that small bowl of ice cream or a small piece of chocolate cake or the white bagel that you couldn't have before. But you shouldn't do it too often, and you should continue to watch amounts on desserts. Phase 3 isn't about abandoning the good principles of the diet and suddenly resuming your old eating habits. It's about continuing to make smart, healthy food choices--for life. If you follow the principles of the diet most of the time, we expect you to enjoy anything you want now and then.

From Publishers Weekly
Releasing five years after cardiologist Agatston's South Beach Diet hit the shelves, initiating a megamillion-dollar franchise (cookbooks, a dining guide, meal replacement bars, frozen foods, etc.), this supercharged version of the plan guides readers into a healthy lifestyle for the long haul. While the first book focused on ending cravings and losing and maintaining a healthy weight, here Agatston introduces a 20-minute-a-day fitness regimen, developed with exercise physiologist Signorile and Pilates instructor Kris Belding. The two-part workout—interval walking (cardio) and total body (core)—geared to boosting metabolism and preventing plateaus, works in three phases in conjunction with the diet and can be adapted to different fitness levels and conditions. An overview of Agatston's philosophy on optimal nutrition, a recap of the diet, detailed daily fitness routines, tips on exercising efficiently, sample meal plans and simple recipes (Moroccan lemon chicken; maple-almond flan) are among the many features that make this appealing, accessible volume a worthwhile update on the original. South Beach Supercharged: Kindle vs. Printed copy
By Diana D.
I highly recommend this book--in printed form, not Kindle (I have a Kindle 2). I bought it for my Kindle, and it's just not formatted well. Testimonials interrupt the flow of the main text in ways that are confusing; the formatting makes it look like a new section, then you return to the original flow of information without warning. I have to backtrack too often. Also, there are many references in the text to specific pages for further information, which can be useful if you are pursuing a particular topic. However, the page references are useless on the Kindle (unless there is a way to find a particular page number that would correspond to the printed copy location). So if I want to find these pages, I'm searching randomly or using the search field, which is not efficient, since the key words are repeated everywhere.

In addition, it's just not easy to page through the recipes or go directly to them when you need them. The Kindle doesn't work as a cook book for me.

An author friend of mine who writes self-help books stated Kindle is not a good format for that type of book, especially when they are not written linearly. I love my Kindle for its convenience and breadth, but I wasted my money on this title. I have to spend more to get the paper copy. Grrrr.

Good Carbs, Good Fats, Food Lists, Recipes, Moderate Interval Walking, and Body Toning Directions
By Donald Mitchell
If you have never read The South Beach Diet, buy this book instead: It's much more helpful due to the exercise section and latest research on healthy eating and physical activity. If you already have a copy of The South Beach Diet, you need to buy this one as well so you can do the exercises.

I'm a big fan of The South Beach Diet. It helped me lose a lot of weight when nothing else worked. I felt comfortable losing the weight and looked great when I was done, rather than like a survivor of starvation. Whenever I gained a bit of weight since then, returning to Phase 1 quickly took it off.

But there was a problem: I clearly wasn't exercising enough. In the past, I've done a lot of walking and weight lifting . . . but I didn't get much benefit in terms of medical measures like reduced triglycerides. In fact, eating oatmeal and taking omega-3 supplements does more for my cholesterol level than exercise. I know that I need something different.

My eyes opened wide when I got to the section of this book that talked about how moderate amounts of walking (20 minutes every other day) with short intervals of fast movement spaced between moderate walking would do me more good for burning fat than doing all that walking that I used to do at one speed. Now, that sounded great!

Between walking days, you do some moderate body toning. Here is where I had some concerns about the book: The photographs show a lot of stress being put on the back. That's not a good idea for me: I have back problems. I'm not quite sure what to do, but I've ordered the DVD to see how these exercises are to be done and hope there will be detailed instructions there for people with bad backs.

In this book, Dr. Agatston does a good job of describing the various physical ills in joints and feet that baby boomers develop from the wrong kinds of activity and exercise. He even helped me understand how I create vast shoulder pain when I shovel snow the wrong way . . . and now I know what not to do.

If you are under 30, you can probably use this book just as is. If you are older, be careful with the body toning!

The remainder of the book is the same wonderful material on eating good carbs and good fats while avoiding bad carbs and bad fats . . . plus the latest validations of scientific research supporting the assumptions underlying the diet. There are lots of phase 1 and phase 2 recipes, and you can buy separate cookbooks if you want more.

But the best part of the book comes in reading the personal testimonies. They make the book come alive.

Great work!

It works!!!
By L. T. Ferris
Easier to follow and with more options than the first South Beach diet, this plan actually works!!! In less than two weeks, I was totally rid of my cravings for the ooey and the gooey. The weight has been coming off and staying off and I have a whole new way of eating (it's not really a diet any more) for the rest of my life!!. I look great, I feel wonderful and the added bonus is that my arthritis has nearly disappeared!!! Changing one's diet does more than just take off pounds!! I recommend this book and this lifestyle!
