About the Author

WALTER B. BAILEY is Associate Professor of Musicology at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University. He has written numerous articles for music journals and magazines, and his previous books include Radie Britain: A Bio-Bibliography, written with Nancy Bisbrecht Bailey (Greenwood, 1990), and Programmatic Elements in the Works of Schoenberg (1984).

Michael Aulden, an American doctor working to repair bodies ravaged by war in the Middle East, encounters Ishmail, a false prophet who emerges from the desert bringing both ecstatic visions and devastation in his wake. Michael is one of the few souls strong enough to see beyond Ishmail's illusions, and he undergoes a series of trials that challenge his assumptions about the nature of reality and lead eventually to a resolution of his inner conflicts. Along the way, he and readers learn much about Jewish, Christian, and Islamic history and the traditions underlying concepts such as Armageddon, the Messiah, the Kabbalah, love, evil, illusion, and free will. Michael's journey is a mystery (in both literary senses: a spiritual story, and a detective adventure) that does finally achieve a satisfactory resolution for metaphysically minded readers. Written with the narrative pace and snappy style of a popular thriller, the tale, though a bit overlong, is leavened with colorful, believable, and often humorous characters and events. Paradoxically, the light touch and realism are juxtaposed with hallucinatory episodes and unsettling (and sometimes confusing) plot twists. This book obviously is not for everybody, but it is very well done, and will appeal to teens exploring alternative spiritual paths, to those troubled by events in the Middle East, and to readers of contemporary fantasy.

This is a good book to read. I bought my copy when it first came out a few years ago and found it hard to put down. I am neither a outspoken critic or a "follower" of Deepak and I found this novel worthy of merit on its own , without making general reference to the authors past work in non-fiction and in fiction.
It sort of cleverly grabs you from the first few pages and beckons you with bare hints that an unfolding mystery is sure to follow should you continue reading. I found myself easily identifying with the religious and idealogical morass the protagonist experiences, and it seems revelant to the day and age in which we live.
Thick, compact and easily readable (to be fair, I did find some parts overly-breezy) without being overly simplistic or pollyannish, it provides an engaging reading experience. The author takes care to not produce something overly dense, causing the reader to become bored and lose interest; choosing not to bog and mire the reader down with sidebar note fuzzy pseudo religio-philisophical concepts.
This book could be just what the Dr. ordered to ease the mind and achieve a serene calm from the ripple effects of an increasingly troubled and chaotic world as we search to seek out and re-adjust our position in it.

Be prepared for a roller coaster ride to hell and back

This was a very hard book for me to read. I read mostly non fiction, and have admired and learned from Dr. Chopra's knowledge of the mind-body-spirit connections. I'm not clear as to how much of the material in Lords of Light is factually correct, since there are glaring mistakes, as some have mentioned. And lots of typos in a book published for world wide consumption. The authors do take a courageous leap into the realms of evil; I found myself feeling like I had fallen into a mudhole. The pace of the book is similar to suspense novels; even though it was making me very uncomfortable, I couldn't put it down, hoping that things would begin to make sense. Bottom line, the authors must have been drinking more coffee than the protaganist, and writing in some free association form. There is too much going on that is not explained, too many leaps of faith that the reader is asked to endure. The good/bad thing is, the book has sent my beliefs into a downward spiral. I am not clear if Dr. Chopra really believes some of the things Solomon and Rakhel(who have the role of teachers/elders) say. Especially te part saying that life is for being human, it isn't good to be too good...he seems to be saying it's fine to steal and lie a little, hey , it's "just the human condition"....For a man who is known world wide for his wisdom and teachings, this feels like the shadow side of Depak having its 2 minutes in the spotlight.

The first three reviewers of this book are in the state that is being talked about in the book..that is, the meaning and lessions of the book are invisible to them. This book jumps and jurks you around and into and out of different times zones and places. That is one of its purposes and by so doing, gives you the feeling that the author wanted to convey about Michael. The "editing with a meat cleaver" is very effective. The minor error about Ash Wednday (if it is really is an error) may have been done like a trap for the reader and some of the reviewers walked right into the trap and they don't even know it. The harping bad of the book by one reviewer based upon this "possible minor error" is like not being able to sleep at night because there might be a weed growing in your lawn overnight. People!! open yourself up to something different. Stop living in the world of "The Prophet" and see the multi-levels taking place. Go beyond the book. Become "the observer" of yourself while you review the book. Start seeing with your imagination and your heart..not always with your mind.

About the Author

Roger Priddy left school at 16 with just one qualification―in art. He went to Berkshire College of Art and Design and trained as an illustrator. His first job in children's books was working with the publisher Peter Usborne, at Usborne Publishing, and then he worked with Peter Kindersley at Dorling Kindersley, where he spent 16 years. Priddy became Creative Director of DK's Children's Division and was Managing Director of the children's mass market publisher Funfax when it was acquired by DK.

In 2000, he created Priddy Books with John Sargent at St Martin's Press to create innovative and imaginative titles for children, from first books for babies through early reference titles for older children. About the Author
As a pediatrician, writer, wife, and mother, Perri Klass has demonstrated how medicine is integral to the health of families and communities, and how doctors themselves struggle to balance the conflicting needs of profession, self, and family. As medical director of Reach Out and Read, she encourages other pediatricians to foster pre-reading skills in their young patients. While earning her M.D. at Harvard, Klass contributed articles to "Mademoiselle" and "The New York Times" as well as to scientific and medical journals. She also wrote her first book, "A Not Entirely Benign Procedure "(1987), which chronicles her introduction to medicine and motherhood. The softest version is presented-Arachne does not kill herself; Pandora suffers no consequences for her actions; and Midas never touches his daughter, sparing her his golden curse. In addition, the author sometimes ends up spelling out details. Some of the segments are true to the ancient world, while others include anachronisms such as newspapers. It is difficult to determine who the intended audience may be, as the writing is simple, yet some of the versions are a bit sophisticated, and readers familiar with these myths will better appreciate the point of view adopted in the tellings.-Angela J. Here, Arachne and Midas ruefully admit their mistakes, Pan fondly recalls encounters with mountain nymphs, and Sisyphus begs readers, "Just . . . give . . . me . . . a . . . moment . . and . . . I'll . . . tell . . . you . . . why . . . I'm . . . here" as he pushes onward. Readers also stand to gain a new appreciation, if that's the word, for Narcissus ("Oh me, oh my, another boring day in the underworld! Which mirror shall I look in first today?"), and sympathy for the usually silent Eurydice, who, despite local headlines ("HADES DISPATCH: Stones Weep, Trees Bow Down at Poet's Grief"), proves herself a better poet than Orpheus. Myths for middle graders drolly told.

This small book would serve nicely as an introduction to classical mythology for the middle grades and interested adults as well. Spires' tone as she retells the tales of not only Arachne, but of Pandora, Orpheus and Eurydice, Sisyphus, Endymion and others as well, is just wry and arch enough to be quite delightful and so appealing. This is captured very well in Gerstein's simple and almost cartoonish illustrations. It's just so fun to hear Eurydice saying "I was married to Orpheus for about fifteen minutes when I was bitten by a poisonous snake and brought down to the underworld. So much for my happiness." Spires' characterizations of these well-known archetypes are always on the mark. The cast of characters list at the end of the book is also useful, if not essential, and also set in a droll prose. The work well fills the gap between the D'Aulaires' classic Book of Greek Myths and the more adult By Jove! Brush Up Your Mythology by Michael Macrone and the also wonderful and more recent Friendly Guide to Mythology by Nancy Hathaway. Entertaining and painlessly edifying, all.

On the eve of the first capital-T trip of her life, Emma Hanley's husband dies, and with him go her dreams of seeing the great sights of Europe. With her world now irrevocably shrunk to her provincial hometown of Palmetto, South Carolina, Emma finds herself immersed in the lives of her grown children: Dora, who left her wild-child days behind when she married church stalwart Donny; and Bobby, whose slide into mental illness accelerated when his beloved older brother, Will, died in Vietnam. Engrossing and Well-Written

A great balance of well-written prose (you keep your brain cells active!) and engrossing characters (you can't help but turn the pages). I found myself looking forward to my nightly read to learn more about what would happen next to Emma Hanley, her adult children, and her grandchildren. (The book narrates a summer's events from many of their perspectives.) The writing had a great comic touch and was particularly strong in all matters gardening. What I liked most about this book (and I found the same was true of Mindy Friddle's first book, The Garden Angel) were the characters: endearing, quirky, yet all too human, each with their own foibles. During my morning walk not long after finishing the book, I found myself ruminating over Jake, Dora, and Bobby, some of the main characters in the story, as though they were real friends or neighbors. A great summertime read!

Some good points but fizzled at the end

This book set off a variety of thoughts and opinions while I was reading it. First, I thought it began a little slow. The novel is about a family Emma, who just lost her husband, Dora her daughter, Bobby, Emma's mentally disturbed son and Kyle, Dora's son. Emma is trying to adjust to being a widow. A likable character, I liked the transformation the author made with her. She goes from a passive wife to a strong, ambitious widow. Dora is married to Donny. Donny is very religious and down right rigid. Dora accepts this marriage as a punishment for her actions long ago. She is living with guilt from the past. This guilt transforms her from a rebellious wild teenager to a meak, lost soul who is so consumed with her own issues, she can't see through the blinders she has put on. Kyle is a typical teenager. He has incredible love and patience with his Uncle Bobby and together they take a job with a landscaper, Jake, who has just returned to his childhood town. Jake is also an ex-boyfriend of Dora. The middle of the novel picked up and peaked my interest. I was excited to continue the story. I loved the characters Emma and Kyle. I could not stand Dora. The author was on a roll until the end. I felt a bit cheated. I thought there were things missing from this story. I didn't think the author did a very good job resolving the conflicts. I appreciate the gardening tie in with the rare flower the landscapers were planting through the town. But the author pulled the plug on this part of the story too soon, I thought, and almost made it irrelevant. I am not thrilled about this book and hesitate to suggest it to anyone. There are too many other, better reads out there to waste time on this one.

An okay read; didn't peak until the end.

I had high hopes for Secret Keepers. I'm not ashamed to admit I judge books by their covers and this one is fabulous. The synopsis uses words like "wayward past," and "old flame," and "mysterious, potent botanicals and resurgent memories." Sounds good right? Unfortunately Secret Keepers didn't really find its true potential until the last third of the book, at which point it was nearly over.

Secret Keepers circles around Emma Hanley and her children. Told in alternating past/present snippets, we learn that Emma's ancestor had a penchant for gardening with foreign plants; her oldest son died in a war; her other son hears voices and sees people who aren't there; her daughter Dora was once wayward and lost until she became found by a religious zealot; and Dora's teenage son Kyle is trying to balance his father's religious demands with dreams of his own. Then Dora's old flame comes back to town, stirs stuff up, and all hell breaks loose. So much potential, just not a stellar execution.

Secret Keepers plods along until the end when things get fanciful and dramatic and one whiff of a flower sends people reeling in memory to their favorite places and times. It seems like it was trying to be magical realism, but took to long to figure that out. In general, I am left feeling underwhelmed and slightly disappointed that it didn't peak until the end.
