Each of their brushes with danger—a rattlesnake attack, a predatory mountain lion—they commemorate with tattoos and rituals in homage to the mysterious force they call ghost medicine. The intrepid Troy—who, in the beginning of the book, reads sections of The Idiot and Jude the Obscure while hiding out in his grandfather's mountain cabin with his horse—grapples with his mother's death through philosophical ruminations: There might be a God [but] He is, at best, ambivalent to all of the things set in motion in this world. In the periphery is Troy's first love, Luz, for whom Troy contemplates staying forever in the idyllic landscape, rather than leaving for college. While the summer climaxes with jarring violence, the possibility of a true departure never materializes: the outside world is held at bay by the inscrutable questions unveiled in the book's conclusion. More than a Ghost of a Chance - Smith has a great debut

Ghost Medicine Troy Stott's story. It is about friendship, growing up, choices, grief, and so much more. This is a captivating story that offers a wonderful alternative to the usual action-driven fare presented to teens. Teenagers (and adults) connect with Troy, and we understand his need for hope. Some of the content and language do not suit young children, but mature readers (10+) should be able to handle the common references to tobacco and alcohol. The story itself lacks the expected qualities of complicated twists and the anticipated romance, but that is what makes the novel so different and special. Its mood is very calm, even with the occasional violence. The author describes every scene with great detail and dialogue. There were a few chapters where those details slow down the pace and may cause the reader to drop his or her attention. But you should keep reading. As the story progresses, the characters evolve into complex and understandable people. This novel will make the reader wish for something like the ghost medicine. It helped Troy and his friends stay invisible and invincible against time, even for the briefest moment.

From the first page this book commands attention, hinting at enough adventure and drama to hook reluctant readers in such a lyrical way that the most literary of readers wouldn't be turned off either: the perfect blend of compelling characters, strong narrative voice and coming of age turmoil.

Andrew Smith's first novel indicates a great career to come, but in the meantime there is plenty to enjoy. His debut is beautifully but plainly written, and addresses difficult subjects with honesty, portraying adolescence in all of its mixed-up, complicated glory.

what a great book

I don't care who you are, teen or adult, male or female, you're going to love this book. Smith's prose is clear and perfect, the characters are bigger than life but from life, and the tension in these scene's is almost unbearable. A lot of people are going to say Ghost Medicine is Cormac McCarthy for teens, and the comparison is an apt one, but this book is too good and too original to be compared to anyone. I especially recommend this for the reluctant teen reader in your life; it will change their minds about what a book can do. And the great part is that, once they've finished--and they'll zip through it--you'll have the pleasure of reading it yourself. Can't say enough.

Great low cost advice for Germany

I have not used Let's Go in years but so far everything in here looks great! Sure wish I had more time in Germany to see more of the things they recommend but we'll just have to be selective.

I love Let's Go, but don't ever rely to heavily on a travel guide..

This book, just like the other Let's Go books, is very informative, personable and right on par for a college age traveler. It has helped me find numerous good eats and great places to stay.

I have used several different "Let's Go" travel books now and have been very pleased. My favorite of them is still Italy, and here is why the Germany one didn't get the top spot:

I used this book while working as an au pair in Tuebingen and relied on it rather heavily throughout my travels. I traveled to about 10 cities from this book, as well as 2 others not listed, and found it to be helpful in almost every way. I was not as pleased with the dining recommendations as other books, but still found it very helpful. However, while visiting Frankfurt (which I definitely recommend), I spent about 2 hrs walking around (apparently aimlessly) only to figure out that two items are mislabeled on the map. The given address in the description section is correct, but the map was wrong.. TWICE in the same city! I realize everyone makes mistakes and I will continue to use Let's Go, but it was super frustrating!

On the flip side, I ended up finding a VERY tasty little cafe near where the other one should have been, and it definitely reminded me that you should never rely too heavily on any sort of travel guide.

I found this book useful as I have earlier Let's Go travel guides in the past. However, being over two years now since it was published, it was sometimes out of date (locales had closed, prices had gone up, etc.) On the other hand, general travel tips were still right on.

This book is very good. It has lots of first hand memories of Elvis and family. I feel Billy Stanley has written honestly and from the heart. A must for Elvis fans, esp those who never had the chance to meet or know Elvis, it makes you feel closer to the man, I felt I was really there at Gracelands amonst everybody, involved personally, whilst I was reading it. Some very sad and happy facts. Leigh

I couldn't put this book down. From being torn away from their biological father, they were fortunate enough to have an older brother who took them under their wing. As little boys I can only imagine they had a blast exploring Graceland. Great childhood.

Hallelujah, I have died and gone to Mayberry!

Everything you ever wanted to know about Mayberry, but didn't know whom to ask. Until now. Painstakingly assembled by two self-proclaimed "Goobers" who have likely forgotten more TAGS tidbits than you or I will ever know, this exhaustive guide is very well-organized and easy on the eye. The first time I read it, during a memorably relaxing trip to the north Georgia mountains, I devoured it in one luxurious sitting, and I still refer to it often. It's that entertaining, addictive and authoritative.
It's important to note, the authors present facts about Mayberry and its denizens as if they were real (and don't try to tell me they aren't!), leaving the task of analyzing the program itself to other scholars. (Such as Richard Michael Kelly, whose own TAGS book is top-shelf.)
The rampant commercialization of all things Mayberry in recent years is more than a little disconcerting. The loving care that went into the making of this book, however, is not in question. For my money, it is the only indispensable reference for those with Mayberry in their blood.

Excellent Reference for the Mayberry Trivia Buff & Fan Fiction Writer

Ken Beck and Jim Clark no doubt eat, drink, and breath the Andy Griffith Show as they must have watched every episode several times with pen and paper in hand to create this book filled with almost every bit of trivia you'd want to know about the show, not to mention their many other books on TAGS. This book is not about the actors, writers, behind-the-scenes activities, or the philosophy of the show, it is a book on the characters, places, and happenings in Mayberry. The episodes of the television show is the only source for this book.

Some reviewers do not think a book recapping the events of the television show is valuable, but it is for trivia buffs and for fan fiction writers. Fans who like to write Mayberry-related stories can find all sorts of helpful tidbits in this book. There is even an episode guide in the back with brief synopses. It is very useful for those who have not seen all the episodes or cannot remember certain details about the characters, places, etc. I have referred to this book several times in writing just one fan fiction story. It is very well-organized and usually offers that little detail I'm looking for. I was very surprised how much information is offered in this book.

Every character is profiled (almost all with photos) from the main ones to those who were only on a short time or intermittently like Ellie Walker, the Darlings, Clara Edwards Johnson, Emmett Clark, Sam Jones, and that adorable Warren Ferguson (with a nice photo I have not seen before). For trivia buffs, there are chapters on "Cops and Robbers," "Codes and Cases," "Mayberry Media" (local newspapers, radio stations, tv stations, tv programs enjoyed by Mayberry residents), "Music of Mayberry," "Contradictions," and more. There is also a helpful map of Mayberry with all the important spots like Myer's Lake, the Duck Pond, the Darling's cabin, and Ernest T. Bass' cave, a town directory and yellow pages for both Mayberry and Mt. Pilot. It also has a quiz. There are scores of b&w photos throughout the book. My only complaint is that the episode guide is not divided up into seasons. Recommended for anyone interested in the characters of TAGS.

An EXCELLENT guide to learning dream interpretation

I really enjoyed this Edgar Cayce guide to dream interpretation. It has something for everyone. I use the symbol dictionary section on a regular basis, but Mark Thurston makes it clear that dream interpretation involves much more than just looking up symbols. I've learned several methods for analyzing and understanding my dreams. Now I can tell when my dreams are desire & fear produced, problem presentations, or compensatory dreams. As an Edgar Cayce guide, the book also explains dream application. In other words, Cayce and Thurston (and Carl Jung) believe we need to act responsibly by applying what we learn from our dreams to our waking lives. A REAL challenge! This book is a "must have" for all students of dream interpretation!

Tonight's Answers Disappoints

Dreams by Mark Thurston was first published in 1988. This is a 4-part book: 1) What is a Dream?, 2) Interpreting Your Dreams, 3) Psychic and Spiritual Dreams, and 4) The Edgar Cayce Dream Symbol Dictionary. While I enjoyed reading about Edgar Cayce and his approach to dreams I must admit I do not think this book was worthy of him. Cayce had many insights to share but they are best explored in other books. Thurston has put out many books about Cayce including The Edgar Cayce Handbook for Creating Your Future. However, it moves even further away from Cayce despite the title. The section on Interpreting Your Dreams is fairly standard advice you will find anywhere, such as "jot down key words" and "keep it reasonably short." Dr. Carl Jung also wrote extensively about dreams and his ideas are worth reading in "Modern Man in Search of a Soul" and his other writings. Dr. Sigmund Freud wrote the first definitive book on dreams, "The Interpretation of Dreams" but it hasn't aged well. Overall, this book is just too fluffy and basic to be of much use.

The weakest section is the dream symbol dictionary (which takes up 50% of the book). I own other dream dictionaries and while they all have their limitations I must admit Thurston's dictionary is the weakest. I prefer the Internet for dream dictionaries now because they offer a wealth of superior information (in my experience). For example, if you look up the entry on "spoon" in this book you will find: "1. Do things in small doses. Dreamer (female, age 59) is handed a cup and a spoon, and then feeds people with spiritual food. Other Possibilities: 2. One's station in life ("born with a silver spoon in her mouth"). 3. Calling attention to diet."

Excellent book Highly Recomend!

This is thee book! I have read many books on dreams and they all fall flat except this one! I have been plagued with remembering my dreams since I was a kid (I am 45). Some of my dreams being Amazing and most being weird and bizarre. I have to admit the more I started educating my self spiritually the better I was able to understand some of my dreams but I was still left scratching my head in confusion for the most of them. Than one night I had a dream someone handed me two books by Edgar Cayce one was called "The Dead of Chicago" and "The Liver" which as usual left me wondering "what the...." but I took that as a hint to start diving into Cayce's books and lo and behold I came to this gem that has been answer to my prayers. For the most part this book has made complete sense and been extremely enlightening there have been a few spots that have been confusing, but I find the further I go in to the book the more I learn and the confusion is gone.

From my experience so far I have found that there is no dream dictionary alive that will completely and correctly interpret your dreams for you. You have to learn to do that yourself and this is what this book will Teach you how to do. It does have some symbol interpretation but for the most part it teaches you to do it yourself by comprehensively breaking down your dream and deciphering the message. Kinda reminds me of English Comp.

If your serious about learning how to correctly interpret your dreams stick with this book and you will be successful. It takes time and effort but it's worth it!
