BEST GUIDEBOOK EVER WRITTEN

I have travelled to England several times and, after lugging along several guide books on the first trip, have never bothered to take any except Crowl's "The Intelligent Traveler's Guide to Historic Britain". The first half of this guide is a history of Britain arranged chronologically, and the second half is a gazetteer--a list of sights/sites of interest, arranged geographically. What makes the book so wonderful are the cross-references in bold in the first half, whenever there is something to visit or see related to the history being discussed, to entries in the second half that tell you exactly where the site is and what there is to be seen, rated on how worthwhile it is. There are cross-references in the other direction as well: following the name of the site or attraction is a list of page numbers, identifying where that entry is mentioned in the historical half, enabling the traveler to look up the comprehensive historical context of nearby attractions. Finally, each entry in the geographical section has a sentence or more describing that site specifically, including its historical significance, so you can judge if it's in your area of interest before looking it up in the front section.
This is not your usual list of things to see and do. Many less-well-known attractions are listed, ranging from prehistorical monuments through ruined medieval castles to modern out-of-the-way museums. I have found many delightful places in England and Wales through intriguing entries in this guidebook--places I would never have known about otherwise. To round out the book, there is a bibliography of selected readings, a list of "The Best of Britain" by categories (e.g., cathedrals, Roman sites, etc.), and a comprehensive index.
I can't recommend this travel guide enough, especially for anyone with even the slightest interest in history.

The best and most authoritative guide

A wonderful, informative and very readable guide to interesting corners near and far throughout Britain. Usable and surprising even to a native Briton, this guide skillfully blends a solid dose of the long and complex history of each site with a brief review of the importance of that historical record. Using this guide in advance will equip any tourist with as much, or more, knowledge of each site as any professional guide. Full of interesting and arcane stories, I cannot recommend this guide highly enough for anyone contemplating a sight-seeing trip to the United Kingdom.
