Imperial Knowledge: Russian Literature and Colonialism (Contributions to the Study of World Literature), by Ewa M. Thompson

Readers have long recognized that Western literature reflects the social, political, and cultural structures that favored colonial masters and their point of view. In both popular and scholarly usage, colonies are territories whose conquest requires travel overseas. Because Russia's contiguous colonies have generally been viewed as gradual and legitimate enlargements of Russian territory and ethnicity, Russian literature has escaped the scrutiny given to Western literary works. This volume argues that Russia's acts of territorial expansion are a form of colonization, and it employs postcolonial theory to explore Russian literature and the power structures reflected in it.

The volume initially overviews issues of nationalism and imperialism and the failure of literary critics to treat Russia as a colonial power. It then places Russian literature within the context of postcolonial theory and discourse. It examines the rhetorical techniques that enabled Pushkin and Lermontov to create a repertoire of colonialist perceptions and stereotypes; it argues that Tolstoy's War and Peace provided Russian culture with its first and arguably most magnificent expression of national self-confidence; and it analyzes the imperial habits of Russian culture manifested in the novels and stories of Anatolii Rybakov and Valentin Rasputin. The book additionally looks at Solzhenitsyn's Cancer Ward; various works of nonfiction, including history textbooks; and the efforts of recent writers to undermine Russian imperialism.

Eye-opener on Russian literature
By SC T
Me, my family and my country were heavily affected by Russian imperialism. 2/3 of my family were starved to death by Stalin in Holodomor 1933. I have no words to describe thankfulness to Eva for this great, eye-opening work. I suffered so much with Russian literature at school I had to study in Ukrainian school instead of (!!) the world literature, I always had negative emotions for which I had no explanation. That was the only literature literally presented as 'great'. Know I am acquainted with tools of post-colonial analysis giving me a rational understanding the arrogant and aggressive nature of this literature, its damaging narrative (for neighbor and enslaved nations). I even got interested to re-read some pieces to do an in-depth analysis on my own.

Russian literature revisited
By Michael J. Mikos
"Imperial Knowledge" is a seminal study of the role played by Russian writers (e.g., Pushkin, Tolstoy, Dostoevskii, Solzhenitzyn, Rasputin) in the service of Russian colonialism. Thompson shows that the benign image presented in Russian fiction has been internalized in Western scholarship and public opinion, obscuring the true nature of Russian imperialism. This ground-breaking book is bound to change the discourse on Russian literature and Russian imperial posture. "Imperial Knowledge" is a required reading for historians and students of Russian literature.

A Profound Insight on Russia
By A Customer
This is the best book on Russian literature I have read in years. It shows a neglected dimension of Russia's literature, a dimension extraordinarily rich in meaning. The book is well written and, even though it is impeccably scholarly, it compels one to read it at one sitting. This splendid study is must reading for anyone interested in understanding the sources of Russia's current troubles. I would recommend it to academic readers as well as to nonacademic lovers of Russian literature.
