About the Author
Katie Speck grew up in New Orleans and now lives in Kansas City with a husband, a daughter, an assortment of pets, and a bug or two. Maybelle in the Soup is her first book.
Paul Rátz de Tagyos went to Parsons School of Design quite some time ago. He is the author/illustrator of several books for children. He lives in New Rochelle, NY with neither fleas nor roaches (he swears).

charming story

Used this as a read-aloud bedtime chapter book to my 3 year old boy and 5 year old girl. They both liked the story and the illustrations. They chronicle the adventures of Maybelle-a roach who lives under the refrigerator of a very neat couple whose home is always 'just so' and has "absolutely no bugs" (so they think), and Maybelle's friend the flea who dines on the couple's cat.
It should be noted that the stories frequently describe in detail how the character insects dine on our human food when we are not aware. [some of the more humorous parts of the book deal with humans discovering Maybelle in their meals, and her even being eaten/spit out once-my kids found this hilarious]. No big deal in our household, we live on a farm after all. But if you or your child is particularly averse to thinking about critters tasting your food then you might want to avoid these books.
The book is 2 stories in one binding. Each story I read aloud in 4-5 nights (15 minutes per night?). I'm no expert, but would think the reading level would be about 8 yrs or older.
