Virtually any stitch pattern can be adapted to socks, and the ones featured here come from all corners of the British Isles and beyond. They include multicolored designs from Fair Isle, Turkey, and Egypt; intricate lace and openwork knitting from the Shetland Isles; textured gansey stitches from the east coast of England and theWestern Isles of Scotland; and chunky cable and Aran patterns from the Isles of Aran. Some of these traditional patterns—designs dating from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries —have been re-created by Margaret Stuart and Margaret MacInnes. Others have been reinterpreted by leading designer-knitters, including Sasha Kagan, Debbie Abrahams, and Rita Taylor. Most of the socks are knitted on four double-pointed needles from the top down; the Turkish and Egyptian patterns are knitted from the toe up; while some lace and intarsia designs are knitted on two needles.

About the Author
MADELINE WESTON and her partner opened their shop The Scottish Merchant in Covent Garden in 1970, and for 20 years it was known as the place in London for buying beautifully made, authentic garments sourced from all parts of the British Isles. Madeline also owned a yarn shop and has done extensive research into traditional knitting patterns; an authority on the subject, she is the author of Country Weekend Knits. She now lives in Norfolk, UK.

Love this book

After reading a review of this book by someone who only gave it one star, I had to chime in because I love this book. There are a wide variety of patterns in this book and most of them I would actually want to knit, with the exception of the argyle's on the cover....I want someone to knit those for me!

Inspiring book

Sent this as a gift to an avid knitter. She loved every pattern in the book and was very inspired to start knitting a pair of socks as soon as her needles were available to start a new project. The other reviews stated that the recommended yarn for the patterns is bulkier than regular sock yarn but if you live where it is cold, that's a good thing. The socks sound like they would be warm and cozy to wear even in the house.

Large Thick Socks

The patterns in this book are quite a bit different from those published in recent sock books. Most of the patterns are for large (9"+ around) thick socks made with heavier yarns at larger gauges. There are some textured socks but more then half are colorwork. The socks appear to be designed as something to wear in oversized winter boots and pulled up over pants. If you live in a climate (like I used to but thankfully don't anymore) where you routinely buy winter boots a size up so you can fit two layers of socks on your foot and are looking for something cheerful to stick out of them, then you may very will like these patterns. If you are like me and only interested in knitting dainty socks with sock weight yarn that will fit in your everyday shoes, then you will not have much use for this book. While I found some of the pattern attractive, I can't imagine ever having a use for them.
